Default Orenco Woods

The city of Hillsboro just bought the old ball golf course at Orenco Woods. During the next year they will draw up a master plan. We (disc golf) should be in on this.

Partially correct.

It is a joint venture between the City of Hillsboro and Metro, with each party contributing two million dollars to the purchase of the land.

Under terms of agreement, 11 acres will be sold for development to fund the remainder of the park which will be designated a nature area.

Doesn't look good for disc golf. Not saying it absolutely can't happen, but it will be an uphill climb.

Do any of the old Orchard Park groupies still have connections to Kevin the Park and Rec guy? He probably is the person to speak with. Jim Nimms maybe??

It looks as if the park will be managed by Metro, not Hillsboro P & R

I looked at that property with a few other golfers and organizers several years ago (I will let them make a comment if they want to). I also spoke with the Hillsboro park director and what I was told is exactly what you are saying today. I believe that was three years ago now and imagine what we could have done with that property, instead it sat there unused and over grown.

My guess is it will continue to sit unused and wasting away. If they do parcel it and develop part of it then the space would be greatly reduced for a course. The creek flowing through is a protected water way and its easement must be protected. With that out of play and one side or the other being developed pretty much puts the stake through the heart of a great piece of property.

I would have like to of seen this developed as a park with running trails and or disc golf before a stupid housing development as if there are not enough empty townhouses and house in Hillsboro already.

I wonder about turning an old golf course into a Nature Park. I played there many times when I played ball golf. Its a shame. It would have made a better city park with trails, kid play area, picnic area and a great disc golf course.

Evidently there is a meeting with the city tomorrow (Sept. 19th) from 5-7PM. Just saw this on Facebook, and have to work, but if anyone wants to show support this would be an amazing spot to have a course...

OK! There is still a shot at getting a new course in Orenco Woods! Meeting tonight!
5:30pm at Orenco Elementary School.
22550 Northeast Birch Street. Hillsboro, OR 97124
The more golfers that show up, the better the chance! And, we now have an inside guy, who says it could still happen! Really!

It might help if you can get the park managers for Orchard \ Hillsboro Parks involved. A guy named Kevin used to be in charge. I don't know the management structure these days.

Cheers

They are already very involved. Orenco Woods is a joint venture between Hillsboro Parks and Meto.

I attended the meeting on the 19th. There were several disc golfers there. The parks people specifically mentioned that disc golf was not under consideration for this park, unfortunately. There's another meeting like this one in January 2013. So there still might be a chance...although pretty slight at this point.

The HPR parks manager for the Orenco Woods project is Mary Ordal. Kevin Smith is no longer at HPR.

I've created a web site (www.discspindoctor.org) whose purpose is to make the need for a new disc golf course known.
