Default Food Toss - Aug 25 - Alton Baker - Eugene

The EDGC is thrilled to announce:

2012 Food Toss
Disc Golf Benefit

for
Food For Lane County

When: 8AM, Saturday, August 25, 2012
Where: West Alton Baker Park, Eugene

Divisions offered include:

Women: Gold, Silver
Men: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper

Youth division will also be offered if needed.

Suggested donation: $15 or whatever you can afford. Food donations will be accepted as well.

Our business model is pretty simple. 100% of the costs of running the tournament are donated by the club and other sponsors, which means 100% of entry fees, donations, and raffle tickets goes to Food for Lane County.

Note that the city has allowed us a generous 'footprint' in the park for this event so we should have an amazing course.

So save the date and we'll dribble out the details on sponsorship and registration and such over the next few weeks (as in bump the post).

This event was a great success last year, and Jim and the EDGC have raised thousands of dollars over the last few years through the Food Toss. That turns into several thousand meals for people in Lane County who don't know where their next meal is coming from. My family will be making our annual donation to Food For Lane County at the Food Toss again this year. Come on out and have fun, help raise the profile of disc golf in Eugene, help get a course in at Alton Baker, and most importantly help feed a kid who needs your help!

I'll also chip in $10 to this year's Ace Bounty - who's in?

That's a good question. We haven't made any decisions on this, but I hope that with a donation we could accomodate some casual play. But no promises, as this is a tournament and we're raising funds for charity by offering a fun experience for tournament participants. I don't think we'd want to let casual play get in the way of that. Maybe at lunch?

Quick update:

The course is looking great. It's mowed (for the most part), and only a little trimming around some of the basket placements will be needed.

Prizes are starting to trickle in, and include a $100 gift certificate to McGrath's Fish House. So some lucky player and a close friend or two will be getting their omega 3's.

Looking forward to having a challenging and creative course with a variety of open and technical throws. We've got a huge footprint to work with so don't be surprised if we have more than 18 holes.

This will be fun. If you want to ensure you have a spot, download the reg form from the EDGC website, and snailmail it in.

Big thanks are due to Bruce Sisson, Bob Guessford, Paul Mize, and Mike Higgins for taking some time out of their Saturday and cleaning out some potential paths to the baskets.

Mr. Eric Smith, TD of the renowned "Wash," a benefit for Linn Benton Food Share, was kind enough to stop by and drop off some lovely raffle gifts. So it was a great day in the neighborhood.

Course should be fun. We'll have a few new holes in the northwestern section and some of the classics in the south and eastern sections.

Even if you can't make it, your money can! For info, download the sponsor letter here.

Attached you'll find the layout we have in mind. There are a few ace runs but nothing too long or technical. Some similar holes, some new holes.

Note the Kid's Course. This will be five, 100' - 150' holes that kids can drop in and play during the day.

We'll also be using the course for the Food Toss Putter Challenge.

$2/round.
$1 to payout and $1 for FFLC.

Each group has a yardstick. Everyone throws their putters and then you use the yardstick to detemine how many points you score.

5 points for an Ace
3 points if your disc is within one yardstick of the pin
2 points if you're within two yardsticks
1 point within three yardsticks

Add up your score after five holes and high score takes it. Don't like your score? Play again.

There will be men's and women's divisions and it should be fun.

Hope to see you there.

Big thanks to Rye http://ryeon3rd.com/ for sponsoring the 2012 Food Toss! This is a sweet new restaurant and bar in Eugene featuring Historic drinks, a full menu and a cool, casual atmosphere.

In addition to sponsoring several tee signs, Rye is offering $3 micro brews to Food Toss participants after the event, with $1 of every sale going to Food For Lane County! This is huge!

All Food Toss sponsorship money goes to Food For Lane County, all entry fees, raffle proceeds, side game proceeds and other donations go to Food For Lane County! So please come out and enjoy some disc golf and support this worthy cause, and afterwards go check out one of Eugene's up and coming culinary hostpots - with historic drinks like these Pre-prohibition favorties:

Gin Rickey c.1890’s (Col. Joe Rickey/ Disputed)
gin, lime, sparkling water

Aviation c.1916 (Hugo Ensslin)
gin, lemon, crème de violet, maraschino

Sidecar c.1920 (Pat MacGarry)
brandy, Cointreau, lemon

and others!

Thank you Rye! http://ryeon3rd.com/

Hey - you can "Like" them on Faceborg and tell them thank you for supporting disc golf in Eugene!

Here's the final map for Saturday. The only real change was on holes 5 and especially 6. Matt and I placed all the flags out there last night and cleaned up a bit. We also added the five Putter Holes.

Tee pads are yellow, pins are white and the walkouts (main course only) are pink.

No distances, but if someone wanted to do that . . .

Congratulations to all the 2012 EDGC Food Toss participants, sponsors and supporters!

We raised $1923, which will provide almost 6000 meals to people in Lane County who need help. Combined with the 2012 EDGC Ice Bowl contribution this brings the EDGC total to $3951 for Food For Lane County in 2012!

Props to Jim Johnson for running the Food Toss all these years and starting this tradition of giving back to our community. When we become a contributing part of our community we help disc golf become more recognized and legitimate in the eyes of people who have no idea about the sport, and this is especially helpful in a place like Eugene where disc golf is woefully underdeveloped. We're doing good things for others and for ourselves!

Our contact at Food For Lane County told me that our efforts are definitely being noticed and more than one group has decided to run similar fundraiser athletic events - soccer tournaments, etc. on this model after seeing our success. Congratulations EDGC and thank you to everyone involved!
