Discraft stamps suck balls.

For the Surge I was out of vinyl, so I used contact paper instead.

I was mainly trying to get this thread back to what it is supposed to be about.

I don't think I have ever used actual contact paper. Is that the same as frisket paper? I tried that once but it bled all over the place, much worse than the Sparta disc.

Which looks cool if that's what you are going for.

Never tried frisket paper. Contact paper isn't that tacky so I usually try and hit it with a space heater then press down a lot for a good fit. Its about 6 bucks after tax at target and walmart. It's hit and miss though with performance. It really just doesn't do to well with the edges of the disc and on Discraft discs where the stamp left and inprint in the disc. As long as the disc is perfectly smooth and you are not taking your design all the way to the edge its ok, but only ok.

I read over a tutorial on a members website and it mentioned things like vinyl and transfer paper etc. I get that what I've been doing is fail, I was sort of just trying something which is more or less working. I want to learn though. I'm just not totally sure what I need to be buying and where I can buy it in my city. If someone can give me a better idea of what exactly I'm asking for I can make some calls and check some places out.

I personally order my vinyl from signwarehouse.com. good prices and cheap and fast shipping. I normally get it within 3 days. I used to and its still p;ossible to get good sign vinyl from a local sign shop. Just ask for their remnants. Oracal 651 series is the best vinyl I have used so far. get the white stuff. Transfer tape is good too, but to eliminate that cost, I just use blue masking tape. it basically does the same thing.

As far as cutting on your disc. Some people may tell you that it makes the disc a violation of pdga rules and makes the disc unusable in pdga play. That is B.S. The rule says something along the lines of purposely altering a disc to affect the flight makes it not usable. That part is true. But, if you make small minor cuts to do a dye that doesnt fall into that category.

All of my black only dyes are done cut free, but with the multicolor dyes are do, there are cuts done on the disc, but it doesnt affect the disc, and you can barely see them anyways.

Blue masking tape is more expensive than transfer tape.

So I assume this is the stuff I should order then. http://www.signwarehouse.com/VOR6511510-p-VOR651-1510-010.html 15 inches seems wide enough to accomodate the disc and then leave over hang.

i started out using contact paper and cutting on the disc. it works, just not easiest and best way to do it. but it is a good way to start dyeing and see what its all about.

i buy my vinyl on ebay now. its cheap, i have used the special oracle stuff that is talked about and i have used the cheapo stuff as well. in my opinion it doesnt really make that much of a difference on the quality of the vinyl you use. just get a light color like white so you can see your design through it when held up to the light.

transfer tape/ blue tape, ive never used transfer tape because i never troubled myself to go find any. i have only used blue tape, and i sometimes wish that it wasnt so sticky.

have fun dying and i look forward to seeing some of you stuff posted here.

Chad, I cut my vinyl squares to 9.5" by 9.5" and it's just barely enough. If you can find a 12" roll or even 10" you'd be ok.

When you first start out with a masking tape, go ahead and cover the entire disc's worth of vinyl, but soon you'll be crafty enough to only cover the cut areas of the design when transferring the vinyl to the disc. Therefore, when looking for transfer tape, you only need a 3" roll instead of a huge one. This will allow for custom masking sizes in the future, and make for much less waste.

Like Trozzle!!! and Tyvek said, though, get white or light colored. I got navy blue vinyl once and it is almost impossible to see through.

So chuck I watched your YouTube videos last night and it does seem that your way is much cleaner and a better way to do things. It's just a matter now of me finding vinyl in my city or having to order it from the interwebs.

do like Trozzle says, get some for free initially by begging scraps from a sign shop. From the looks of it though, you are already pretty into it, so you might as well just buy some intermediate grade online. take pictures of your first vinyl process, that could be fun to check out.
