It wouldn't have to be the top players since any two players with similar ratings would work the same. Even if someone was rated 20 points higher, and they would normally have to give two strokes, couldn't they just have to win by two holes?

Then again there wouldn't be a way to rate the round so we couldn't have more than one match be match play, and that person would have to play in a stroke play round as well.

Default Another topic...

Another topic for the meeting: tie-breakers.
Two questions:
1. Do we let singles/doubles matches end in ties?
2. If not, how is the playoff run?

Jordan has proposed using a "fractional handicap" for the playoff. This is goofy unless the the handicap is zero (straight-up) or 18 strokes. For example, if the handicap is 9 strokes, that's a 0.5 stroke handicap per playoff hole. So the playoff will end on the first hole:

1. Both players score a 3: lower wins 3-3.5;
2. Higher rated wins hole by one stroke: higher wins 3.5-4;
3. Lower rated wins hole by one stroke: lower wins 3-4.5.

So this proposal gives a huge advantage to the lower rated player as the higher rated player must win the first playoff hole by a stroke to win the match.

My preference is to abolish playoffs. Let singles/doubles matches end in ties. Another advantage is that we are often short on time. Also, I'm old and get tired easily. Damn, where did I put that Ensure...

I agree let matches just end in ties way easier. I also along my team want dubs to stay.

You had it right and then you muddied the waters. The bolded words ARE the whole point of the rule: a quick end to the tie. And yes it does favor the lower rated player just like the previous rule, playoff without ANY handicap, favored the higher rated player last year.

Exactly Jordan, you're helping prove my point here. So the best idea is (drum roll please): NO PLAYOFFS.
Don't favor anyone, equal opportunity, land of the free and all that.

Man Jordan, you're harsh. I thought I was making the world (or at least TDG) a better, more fair place and you just give me flak.
I'm not saying I don't deserve it, I'm just saying...

What about making the 5th singles match play, or at least an option? As long as both teams have people rated within 10 points it should work without a handicap. Team 1 puts down five singles and one doubles, team 2 then picks which one of the singles will be match play. If the two teams don't have anyone rated closely, or if team 2 doesn't want to, they just stick to stroke play.

I'm for keeping it simple.... I dont see how adding match play would make TDG any better and I can see how it would confuse some teams.

Jordan, make it so. And make all of our matches "ties". No one can take our team down in this extra-curricular event.
