well, when you come from the Columbia Plateau you almost forget that other places have trees. You can always plant trees too.

Uummm...isn't this whole thread about this meeting?

I thought that the whole thing was about as exciting as watching paint dry. The first 3 hours of the meeting were a battle between the immediate park neighbors and the proposed parking lot improvements. It seems that this park is a fave spot of the Reynolds High kids to park and screw all night long. They whined about people in the park after hours and then whined about adding more lights to illuminate the parking lots...

If you go to the Troutdale Parks Master Plan here and go to Appendix A you'll find a nice table that summarizes all of the parks in the area by type and lists the acreage of the parks. But after looking at the various options for dg in these parks there really isn't a good option (one with enough space) unless you look at the group of parks designated as Natural Areas.

And while Sunset Park looks like it could hold dg, it would be hard pressed to be as challenging as Orchard Park. Even though a pitch and putt course would still be a great addition to the area, the neighbors appear to believe that this Community Park is really a Natural Area (you know, because SOO many natural areas have vast mowed fields...) and don't want disc golf in their personal private backyard..errrrr...park.

This wasn't my dog in the race so I wasn't crushed when they decided to recommend that disc golf not be added to Sunrise Park. I was however encouraged that they passed a resolution that they'd like to add disc golf to SOME park in the Troutdale Park system. So they are looking for input from the disc golf community on recommendations for sites that would work for disc golf in their park system.

At least it was good experience to see how the Troutdale Parks Advisory Committee operates and meet some people who work for the city of Troutdale. I was just going to spend the night smack talking on the Team Disc Golf thread anyway, so it wasn't a great sacrifice to attend this meeting.

I meant before the day of the meeting!

I think you're right that not having DG in Sunrise Park is not a huge loss. Very encouraging, though, that they're thinking about it somewhere else.

Well since I only found out about the meeting just before 3 pm, I could have posted it a little earlier...

Jordan,

Thanks for attending the meeting to represent the disc golf community. I think attending all the parks department meetings in our local areas is an important task that will lead to more courses.

Is Blue Lake Park in the Troutdale Parks system? I have driven by there a few times and it seems to be begging for a course. I do not know anything else about the park, but it looks pretty nice.

Blue Lake Park is a "regional" park; I think it's run by Metro. And it's a very very very busy park... a course there would almost have to be winter-only.

I disagree. Sure there is the part of Blue Lake park that many people go to most sunny days, but there are also areas that aren't right next to the lake that could be used for disc golf. The last time I heard about trying to get disc golf in that park, the people in charge wanted to go with a stick and ball golf course so that they could make more money. But there isn't any ball golf there yet, so maybe it is time to revisit getting disc golf in the park.

The part of the park they were talking about was not in Blue Lake proper, but across the street...which is still considered Blue Lake property.

I know of a couple people that have talked with the blue lake park peeps. The last I heard, somebody was working on a disc course design that would be put in until they get a ball golf course in.
