Default Matchplay for the Masses - Terrace - 11/14/09

Matchplay for the Masses

When: Saturday, November 14th - Players meeting at 9:00
Where: Terrace Creek
Cost: $5
Maximum # entries: 32
Divisions: One big, happy family division

I'm realizing there is a matchplay void in Seattle so here is everyone's chance to play a super fun type of disc golf. This will run similar to an NCAA bracket - you will compete against only one player at a time and work your way up the bracket.

No divisions to speak of, its just $5 and since those who lose are placed into a separate pool (where they can still cash), we won't really need divisions. Everyone is guarenteed to play at least 2 matches (double elimination).

Sign up now by pm'ing me or posting and I'll start filling the bracket with a random number generator. Will add as an attachment if I can.

PLAYER LIST (will be randomly put into the bracket a few days before the tourney):
1. Andrew Rivers
2. Sheila Teves
3. Kyle Sutherland
4. Aaron Thornfinsson
5. Toby Cheff
6. Thomas Little
7. Jesse Ingram
8. Tim Coye
9. Robert LaPlaunt
10. ChUck
11. The Ombudsman (Michael ???)
12. Jason VanProyen
13. Ian Markussen
14. Bill Clark
15. Eric Mesford
16. Getty
17. Ken Smith
18. Aaron Holley
19. Ryan Bartell
20. Ming Vang
21. Wayne Whitney
22. Evan Troka
23. Jessie Westphal
24. Nate Bell
25. Rhett
26. Jens
27. Frank?

Great idea. If you are planning for 18 hole rounds that could be a lot of golf for a short day. If you get 64 that is 6 rounds to get a winner. I am in but suggest 9 hole matches I would rather not climb 6 rounds at terrace. You are the man andrew!

Ah yes I forgot, one more twist to this whole deal is that the rounds will run "turbo" style to make sure we have plenty o'daylight.

First round - 12 holes
Second - 12 holes
LUNCH
Third - 9 holes
Fourth - 7 holes
Fifth - 5 holes
Final - Sudden death

Maximum # of holes = 44 holes unless you go into overtime in any of your matches

No biggie Thomas, I'm sure there will be a range of skill levels there and also:
1. Its for fun!
2. Its matchplay which is very different from stroke play
3.You da man
4. Its for fun!

Having just played the format I recommend anyone that can come out. It is a much different feel than stroke play and is a lot of fun.

Hey kats, Im interested. What needs to be done in order to get in on this? Let me know. Id be stoked to try out a new format. Its not based on your score for the round, but the number of holes you win, right? Great idea.

All of these are very true, especially number three.

I will say though if I get pitted up against anyone on this list it will be money well spent, winning or losing doesn't matter, the vast amount of knowledge gained and the fact that it will be tons of fun will be well worth it, besides I'm the best turbo putter on this list so far, that I know of

Not bad Adnrew, I think you're around %50 success rate in spelling names on the players' list.
I'd feel bad that you're cheating me out of one of my f's, but I think Sheila's missing an 'i', and not sure about Aaron's last name...
All jokes aside, I think you should do this at North Park!!

Funny guy, right here! However, I'm not sure where to add an extra "i" to Sheila's name

Yeah, I'd love to do this at North Park but the rumor is that we can't take over the park for tourney's. We'll see how this one works out but I think North Park would be a great venue for matchplay.

I am curious why all these events are suddenly so numerous and time constrainted? It's not like it's gonna snow anytime soon.

I would offer a suggestion that you do at least five holes for the fifth round. 3 holes for match play could be VERY arbitrary depending on which hole you're playing, and could be quite unfair.

Also, you might want to stick with odd numbers, so you don't have to deal with any ties along the way. I would suggest...

RD1 - 13 holes
RD2 - 11 holes
RD3 - 9 holes
RD4 - 7 holes
RD5 - 5 holes

That said, sounds like a fun event!

I hear you on the 3 holes part, it will definitely increase the luck/randomness factor but at the same time I want to a) pump up the pressure a bit for the final rounds, b) encourage those who get knocked out to watch a bit of the last matches (but not have to sit around for a lot of holes), and c) finish before dark while giving as many as possible a chance to play a lot of holes.

If everyone was paying and playing for lots of money - I'd say 9 holes would be the minimum. I'm open to suggestion if people have a big problem with it, but my inclination is to leave the short matches. My plan is also to have short matches do a little bit of a safari course for that round and the finals and it sounds like it might be wise to make it as fair as possible.

Odd numbers unfortunately do not solve the tie problem as for example in a 3 hole match you can both win a hole and push (split) one hole which leaves the score tied at the end.
