Awesome!!! I mean, *ahem*, a moment of silence...

I am definitely an environmentalist, but let's face it, one tree, not the end of the world, and as stated in the news article to build the trail and connecting bridge they want it's the most ideal spot that works, without having to take out even more trees. Plus they are planting dozens more sequoias in the barren dog park area across the tracks... seems like a win-win to me... though I'm sure the tree would argue otherwise. As far as the lady in the video saying she's going to cry if the tree is cut down, and the guy who tried to fight the parks department on this, I think they should choose their battles a little more wisely, this doesn't even amount to a drop in the bucket. Of course, I might be just a little biased considering the rumors of additional disc golf holes...

Yeah, what Harrison said. Trees are a renewable resource, and that one will be removed isn't exactly old-growth; giant sequoias aren't even native to this area. And I think it's cool that they've already earmarked a use for the wood in the chopped-down tree.

Moreover, this means they're FINALLY moving forward with the plan to build a bridge to Chimney Park, which may very well mean that the course at Pier Park could expand to 27 holes.

This tree cutting is deplorable. Something really stinks about this. They should make a curved path. How would you feel if you were a 120 foot tree and they said you gotta go because we need a nice straight path there instead of a curved path?

Sounds to me that the Parks person in charge may be getting a "kickback" from the Arborist who is making a mint to take this tree down. Someone needs to investigate this further! I can't imagine the cost of removing a perfectly healthy tree would be less than making a curved path.

So how informed are you on this issue? Have you seen the plans? Do you know where exactly the path is going and how it aligns to the bridge? Do you know all the factors that go into the placement of the bridge? I don't; that's why I'm reserving judgement.

To accuse the parks department of taking kickbacks is a bit of a stretch until all information is on the table.

Wouldn't you think they would at least provide a diagram of what they intend to do here? City government has become like Federal government in that everything they do now is "Top Secret." They are supposed to be working for the people but they have their own agenda and no one is allowed to know what it is.

The fact that that tree is now removed, and the location of that tree being removed tells me that there are big plans for Pier Park and this proposed "Greenway" and the disc golf course is not a part of these plans. My intuition tells me that hole 1, hole 2 and hole 3 are going to be gone.

I'm sorry sir, but you have no idea what you are talking about. There are plans to add 11 holes to Pier Park, while holes 1 and 2 will be missed, bigger plans will ensue. Glad this tree is down despite you ridiculous people

You obviously don't know much about the bridge project... The bridge has to be built at that location due to the height requirements for the rail road. The path has to be at a certain grade and direction to meet ADA requirements, and wide enough for an emergency vehicle to cross. This was discussed at great length to minimize damage to the park and trees. The plans for the project are posted on the city website, they aren't trying to hide anything from you. The tree was scheduled to be cut early because March is the start of nesting season and they didn't want to disturb any wildlife. I have been at every public meeting regarding this project, I don't recall seeing you at any of them. Please educate yourself before you start bitching about a subject you know very little about. Get involved or be quiet.

Portland Parks and Recreation department.

It took under five seconds to find. Apparently, the city is also inept when it comes to hiding their dastardly plans.
