Yeah thanks for using a partial quote. I do consider myself one of the best around, but not the best. I do my work for fun and not for t the glory, so yeah in a way I dont like to brag, but i do anyways. I do know that I do some sick ass work and I have a few major sponsors interested in my work, so thats not a bad thing at all

If i thought i was the best, I would have been making money doing this years ago. I recently found a way to maybe get paid doing this if things work out. Hell! I jsut gave away a dyed isc for free today. I am not into this shit to get rich, I do it for fun

All you guys have some amazing dye jobs and that Kermit Yoda dye Was unbelievable, I don't even wanna know how you got the textures down Trozzle. But, I just dyed my first disc and it was a multi color disc. As you can see there are a million things wrong with it. Mostly that I wasn't that concerned with cutting the contact paper precisly as I should. But, the question I have is How do you do multi-layer dye jobs so easily? I can't find a video or get the info anywhere.
I drew the Image on two separate sheets of contact paper and did the Red dye first, then rinsed my disc and the black dye second. I had the hardest time lineing up the second picture with the dye job on the disc. Is there a better way, then shining a bright light from undernieth the disc. Becuase that's what I did and it was still off. Any pointers or helpful info would be nice.
Also Is Champion Candy plastic hard to dye? becuase I used twice as much dye for the black part and left it in the dye twice as long as the Red dye, and the red came out way better. It was my first attemt of many so anything to steer me in the right direction would be awesome.

the only thing really wrong that i see with that disc is there is a guy doing something "unmentionable" to a furry farm animal!


but on the serious side, when you do multiple color dyes its always best to do the black first. you do the black first because every other color will not effect the black on the disc( well it might make it darker, but you want it dark right?) you dont have to cover up black when you dye any other colors on the disc. that will make it a bit quicker in the long run. and you dont have to worry about lining up the colors perfectly that are going next to the black.

in my opinion Champion or Z plastic is the best to dye because it holds the image longer before your lines start to get fuzzy. and no matter what you do, every dye will get fuzzy with time. pro plastic is pretty bad for that. i also have found that the red dye that i use sets in much quicker than my black or other colors do. i dont know why becuase i am not a chemist, i just know it does. for the best black make sure to have your dye at a good temperature. i know that ChUck has posted some actuall temperatures on this thread, maybe go back and look for those.

for me i just start dyeing when the dye is steaming nicely. one more tip since you are just starting to dye, be VERY careful with your dye! if you spill it on something, most likely that something will be dyed forever.

OK, I apologize about the "one of the worlds best" thing. I was just saying that not many do multicolor dyes like I do, so in a way, I am one of the best. Not saying I am the best. I dont know what everyone dyes like across the nation, or the world.

And Zombie, I cant give away all of my secrets, but as far as the texturing goes, its about using the same color over and over. Painting it on different areas, and timing that part of "soak" time to establish the correct color you want for that area.

I know you cant give away everything, but can you give me a hint on how you cut out your designs and place them on your discs? What I don't understand is how do you get your vinyl cut-outs to the disc? Do you put the vinyl on the disc and cut out your design, and risk scratching your disc up? Or do you cut it then place it on the disc and eye it? or do you cut it out and use transfer tape to put the image on the disc? and if you use transfer tape, how do you get it on the transfer tape? That is what I am struggling with.

I watched a video on youtube where these guys did a multicolor "scarface" dye using transfer tape, the only problem is they skipped the hardest step, cutting the image out and getting it on the transfer tape.
Anybody care to give away one last secret?

Friendly narrator of said video here. Not sure what the issue is--cut out the design on the vinyl, weed away all the parts you're not going to use, and put the transfer tape on top of it. Remove the backing from the vinyl, move the whole thing over onto the disc, the vinyl sticks to the disc more than the tape. Make sure you smooth out any bubbles. Peel off the tape and you're ready to dye.

Did you watch both tutorials (pink biohazard as well as the Scarface)? Between the two, I think we got the necessary steps.

when i very first started, i was using contact paper and would trace the design on the contact paper. then would put it on the disc and cut it on the disc. not the best way by any means, but when you are working with contact paper most transfer tapes will be to sticky to work with transfering your cut image to the disc.

after breaking down and ordering vinyl (white is the easiest to work with) off ebay my practices have changed. what i do now is find the design i want, then make it the right size on the computer or copier. i lay that on my light table(home made and inexpensive to make) then lay a 11"x11" square of vinyl over the top with the backing side down. once i have the design centered on the square of vinyl i tape them together so the design wont move around underneathe the vinyl. next i start cutting out all the parts of the design that i want black.

if it is a multicolor dye i will take a fine sharpie and draw the lines where other colors will go later on. after all the black parts have been cut, i remove the vinyl from those places. then i put on the transfer tape covering the whole design(i use blue painters tape because i can get it really cheap) once the transfer tape is on i take off the design from the back and slowly pull the backing off of the vinyl square. once the backing is off i put the vinyl down sticky side up. if the disc is clear then i can line up the design with the disc easily and lower the disc down on the desing by only holding the rim. if the disc is not clear then i trace a circle on the vinyl with the disc before i do any of the above steps. that way you can use the circle to line up the disc with your design.

once i have lowered the disc onto the vinyl, i give it a good press to help get as much vinyl adheared to the disc as possible. then i will flip it over and start working all the air bubbles out towards the sides of the disc using a credit card or something like that. then wrap any ecxess vinyl around the egdes of the disc and its ready for the dye bath!

i know that is a long explanation, but it should be pretty detailed.

If you take a fine sharpie and draw the lines for the other colors, doesn't the black Dye completely make it impossible to see the lines for the second color? And do you cut the second and third color out of the existing vinyl that has already been dyed to the disc or, do you cut it out from another fresh piece of vinyl? Sorry to bother you. But I really appriciate the feedback, I've seen a lot of great dye jobs and I would love to make some I'm proud of.

On alot of my discs, I actually do most of my cuts on my disc. I have developed the touch to the cuts to not leave many, if any actual tiny cuts on the disc. some still say it makes the disc illegal, but I dare you to look at my dyes and find any cuts.

I own that Scarface disc now. Star plastic has not been kind to the original image. I still like it though.
