Default Shelton Springs

I know this new course in Shelton, WA has been mentioned in other places (Washington Events), but after I finally got up there to play it for the first time yesterday at the Mason County Disc Golf Championships I feel the need to mention it again in its own thread.

It is awesome.

For those who have not heard: the 18 hole layout is in place and has been mostly finalized. There are 2 sets of teepads for each hole (natural, dirt pads for a little while longer), and good signage to get you around. From the Pro (black) tees, there are 2 par 5's and 4 par 4's, 12 par 3's (total par 62)and the designs of the long holes are original (at least in my experience), fair, offer great risk reward / smart placement. For those who have said that par 4's and 5's are the future of disc golf, I say the future is here.

The Mason County Disc Golf Club deserves a ton of praise. This relatively small club sort of came out of nowhere and collectively they have put in a ton of time and thought and it shows. From the labor on the course, to the web site, to the tournys and organization, and the fundraising and community involvement you all are doing it up right.

I say this is definately a destination, championsip level course, especially when the teepads and baskets go in (currently there are wooden poles) though I'm gonna get up there as much as I can regardless.

Oh and if any of the moderators have read this far can we get a new link under the Olympic peninsula courses section? I or the club members would be happy to provide some of the course specs and directions, ect.)

I'll second that and add a request for Lake Isabella also - I know it's a pole course, but I'd like to see a thread to be able to know it's status/conditions (I know it's on dgcoursereview..) and anything going on out there before I make the trip out there.

Thats right wooden posts for now but this Sunday the 19th we will be holding a little tournament. For the tournament we will have 18 baskets out. This is definitely the best time to come and check us out. More info can be found here: http://www.masoncountydiscgolf.com

Shelton Springs DGC on Disc Golf Course Review

With more and more people playing the Springs, and interest being piqued, I thought people might like to see this link. I uploaded a bunch of pictures that both show off the Course and can be very informative for the majority of people who have never played here before. Enjoy!

Thank you for the pictures and uploading them to DGCR, I also did a review recently of the course, you can check that out with that link as well. This is my new favorite course, now I just need to move less than 2 hours away! Go MCDG!!!

Nice review, Silly. I also just put up a review. I've spent a lot of time trying to take my bias out of writing a review for Shelton Springs. Don't worry, some of my bias still shone through.

FYI the heavy rains of the last few days have placed puddles on 5-6 of the tee pads. Experience shows these will drain quickly if the rain ever stops.

and a big thanks to whomever thought hole one's basket needed a "Chainhunter" sticker. I couldn't agree more I just wish you would have also left some candy wrappers in the chains and I don't know maybe a beer can on top, yea... I think that would have really rounded the look out because I'm with you the last thing I want to see when I go golfing is 18 shiny new pristine baskets. Makes me damn uncomfortable to be that close to legitimacy, hell pretty soon folks would start taking us seriously and then where would we be.

Does any one know where I can get 17 more really tacky stickers for my local course?

it took me most of the post to understand that you were being sarcastic. i share your thoughts, my question to you is "did you do the right thing and take the sticker off? or leave it."

cheers and i hate driving from a mud puddle/lake.

Ugh, sorry to hear that the db's are already out - usually there is a grace period before everyone feels comfortable enough to start abusing the course. Hope this guy gets the larger picture in terms of some lame sticker versus projecting ourselves as stewards of the parks!

Default Hotel in Shelton

Hey Shelton DG Bro's! Any suggestions on a hotel somewhat near the course? We're gonna make a weekend out of the Team DG Finals. If there is nothing near the course, no worries. Something near some pubs would be even better. How's the Shelton Inn?

There's still a chance we may do the Yauger Bomb on Saturday instead on SS, but we will most likely try to stay in Shelton.

This is the closest Hotel to the course, think it's under a mile.

There is also the Little Creek Casino within 10-15 miles of both Oly and Shelton Springs DGC.

There is free camping available at Ronnie Bolan's house, he has 5 acres with a bunch of baskets. He is about 15 mins from Yauger and about 35 mins from Shelton Springs.

That sounds tempting too. Do you know if I need to bring my own zip ties or will they be provided and installed on my tent free of charge?

Hey Morgan and MaCo company,
In preperation for the TeamDG finals I went and played a round of black and red each yesterday. Such a beautiful course. Great Job!

I know I am a week ahead of myself here, but a couple questions:
1) Have you decided on a format for next sunday? Red in the Morning, Black in the afternoon? Something similar?

2) I am not looking for the official SSA or anything(although an SSA rating would be cool) but can you give a little local insight into what is a good score on red and black?

I played Red first blindly and shot a 60. Not sure I can improve much on that score even after I knew what I was doing.

Played Black immediately afterward and was a little tired. I shot a 72. That round I could look back and count 4 or 5 strokes I am pretty sure I could improve on right away just from the mistakes in "placement" and "disc choice" I made from not knowing the course.

I also got creative on a few holes since there were puddles on the dirt tee pads. Since I did not have better footwear I chose to tee off behind or next to the actual teebox.

I am so looking forward to the 10th when I can play this beautiful course again!! Great job Mason County peeps!!

I can only imagine the zip ties are included in the stay!

We have not decided on the layout out instinct is to go Red morning then Black but since it is the final I am pushing for BLACK, BLACK. If someone really wanted to check out the red course which does play different they can always come back. Chris what are you thoughts on BLACK, BLACK for the 10th?

So as far as the SSA goes I would guestimate 59-60 on the Blacks. This is based on data from last year there have been a number changes though so it is hard to say for sure. Best round to date that I know of is a 57. From the Reds 56-50 under is a decent score with the hot rounds coming in at 49 and under.

FYI:
Blacks Par 63
Reds Par 60
