This has to with providing enough spin to that the centrifugal force keeps things held inside the rim, right?

Yes; it's an actual grip used back in the late 60s and 70s with wider rimed discs, and yes we used to pass things back and forth on the sports fields at school during lunch, and a BPG did work best for this
