  • Keeping It Simple (Stats Fans Unite)

I recently discovered a trend in my game that I think is worth noting. I seem to be throwing less and less molds/unique discs over the course of a tourney and using key discs more and more. Over the last two events (Trojan C Tier and Adair C Tier) I threw only 13 unique discs and 9 different molds. This includes every shot taken on the course (203 shots, 98 from Trojan, 105 from Adair, plus 4 penalty strokes that only effect score, not shots thrown). Here is a listing of what I threw, how many times, and what percent it is.

Interesting to note that I threw 3 discs only once over nearly 200 shots, and two other molds less than five times! I really only used 4 molds (7 discs) for two entire tournaments! CSI is next weekend, from what I hear about the course I'll be needing to throw lots of different shots...we'll see!

So is that what it means when Pro's say: Keep it Simple?

Wow! You're dedication to statistics and throw tracking blows my mind. I've definitely gotten a lot out of reducing my total number of molds over the last few years, and in tournaments I tend to find a money driver for the weekend and just stick with it. I generally play 90% of all my shots with one driver, (surge) one fairway driver (XL), one mid (Buzz) and one putter (challenger). Everything else in my bag is for certain specific shots.

back to basics. throw what you know. keep it simple, stupid.

      those do be my mantras.

however, to start with, i have way less molds in my bag than most folk who play as much golf as i do... except for my papa bear... the epitomy of zen golfer.

      peace,

I keep finding little bits of extra distance on my weakening drives by trying new long drivers (in impossible to find weights), but the short game stuff in by bag is fairly established. Any new disc has to be tried for a reasonable test cycle. Maybe I'm over-thinking this by carrying four types of putters, but each has found its place (BTW, the Ringer has become that fourth one).

Please, God/Goddess, let there be lightweight Bosses and Katanas in DX soon.

Thanks Ron, I'm sure that applies to most of us. Funny how many molds we feel we can't live without, regardless of how often (or not) we throw them. I'm going to start paying more attention to this.

On a typical round at Trojan, this is what I throw:

32 putts or throws with an XD - 64%
              8 throws with an Eagle - 16%
              5 throws with a Roc - 10%
              4 throws with an Orc - 8%
              1 Throw with a Boss - 2%

=50 shots total (about my average for the normal Trojan layout)

I guess that explains why putting practice is so important.

Here's my rundown of what discs were used on Sunday.

I learned a lot, like that I can probably take a disc or two out and that a lot of my strokes come from putting.

I suggest everyone try to do this so they can see what can be changed about their game to make it better

I often keep track of my drive choices and mid choices but never thought about putters. I'll go and do a rundown on what I threw @ Highbridge on Sunday and see what the ratios's break down to. It seems that I usually throw one of four molds for drivers. SS Avenger, Force, Nuke or Venom. Gonna be interesting to see how it all breaks down.
