Unsolicited testimonial: Android app "Custom Maps" is highly useful for disc golfers

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...apsapp.android

This thing is amazing. Take ANY JPEG image, i.e. a course map, and make it into a GPS-enabled map that will show you exactly where you are on the course at all times! It only takes a few minutes to create your map. It creates a KMZ file you can easily share. Let me know if you would like a copy of my McCormick Park DGC course map KMZ file, for example.

Here's a Custom Map I made of McCormick Park: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9x...it?usp=sharing

You can view it in your browser, and see how it overlays the JPG onto Google Maps, but the real power is when you open it on Custom Maps on your Android GPS device, and then it shows you where you are on that map. I'll bet Adam Schneider could tell us more...

          Hey Treelove,

When you get a chance, you should revise it to the new layout map http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course...6/a08a82c4.pdf This is much more accurate and has exact distances done with a total station.

Thanks! I searched all over, found many maps, could not tell which was current. I may have already done that one too, will check later and re-post.

I am not sure why this one displays without proper rotation in a browser. This original image for this map did not have North at the top like the first one I did, but I rotated my tie points, and checked it several times. It previews fine on the phone, but I cannot test it until I get there. I have posted a question to the developer. It may be that trying to view these KMZ files in a browser is not valid thing to do. Anyway, YMMV. Enjoy!

Here is my latest post from the Google thread on this: If you find this interesting at all, read on...

Success! The KMZ file created in Custom Maps from a JPG that does not have North at the top does indeed display correctly rotated and overlaid in Google Earth!
                  Example:

older file that has North at the top: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9x...it?usp=sharing

newer file that does NOT have North at the top: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9x...it?usp=sharing

If you are running Chrome, these will open right up when you click them (I hope), and you will see (at least if your platform matches mine closely enough) that one looks right, and one looks wrong.

But if you open them in Google, Earth, they both look right!

Thanks, Marko, for explaining why this is, assuring my confidence in rotated maps I create in advance, and pointing out that Google Earth is the best way to preview/validate your Custom Maps KMZ files. Plus it is awesome bringing them up on a large screen and having 3D viewing control!
