      How's about this idea: match play!

      Make the fifth singles match a match play format or even two singles. Three singles stroke play, two singles match play, and one doubles. That could be fun. Could the handicap work the same? Not sure if it would be fair if someone have to give 19 strokes/holes on an 18 hole course...

      Just think about the new strategies that could unfold!
      The main reason for relegating the dubs matches to 'only if you have all players present' was a move to get more players playing singles rounds that can be rated. And the more players who play a given round, the better the round ratings will be each week. And as long as I don't do something stupid like weight the latest round at 50% we should get accurate ratings for everybody in the league fairly rapidly.

      So I don't see going to match play anytime soon. Is there even a way to handicap a match play event?

      Hath this whole world been mired in madness?

      Of full arithmetic and prudence fair,
      Attending to our noble bond and contract?
      Or does here stand the last remaining man
      To give a fig for rules and order yet,
      No noble savage, but a stave unbroken

      Iíll not be bent to lawlessness. Mark it nought, if we be men of honour.

        I may have to bring in a substitute captain for the meeting since I'm working in Albany now. Maybe I'll play Bryant (6 blocks away) or Adair (10 minutes) and think of you all

          I do love match play...you play totally different...a lot of go for it shots... instead of play it safe and just get a par and move on.

          The only way a match play set-up can be done that I can see is IF AND ONLY IF the top player of each team play each other and NO HANDICAP...STRAIGHT UP BABY!

          Thinking of it that way . It could be interesting...that would take out of play the 15 to 20+ stroke make-up on a round when a team puts up low rated player against a high rated player.

          Thoughts?

            I think one of the great things about TDG is that its for everyone. Stroke Play puts the priority on skill level, which, imho, is not what TDG is about. That being said, I'd be way down for a stroke play league/match. Maybe it could be used for team tie breakers in TDG?

              It wouldn't have to be the top players since any two players with similar ratings would work the same. Even if someone was rated 20 points higher, and they would normally have to give two strokes, couldn't they just have to win by two holes?

              Then again there wouldn't be a way to rate the round so we couldn't have more than one match be match play, and that person would have to play in a stroke play round as well.

                Another topic...

                Another topic for the meeting: tie-breakers.
                Two questions:
                1. Do we let singles/doubles matches end in ties?
                2. If not, how is the playoff run?

                Jordan has proposed using a "fractional handicap" for the playoff. This is goofy unless the the handicap is zero (straight-up) or 18 strokes. For example, if the handicap is 9 strokes, that's a 0.5 stroke handicap per playoff hole. So the playoff will end on the first hole:

                1. Both players score a 3: lower wins 3-3.5;
                2. Higher rated wins hole by one stroke: higher wins 3.5-4;
                3. Lower rated wins hole by one stroke: lower wins 3-4.5.

                So this proposal gives a huge advantage to the lower rated player as the higher rated player must win the first playoff hole by a stroke to win the match.

                My preference is to abolish playoffs. Let singles/doubles matches end in ties. Another advantage is that we are often short on time. Also, I'm old and get tired easily. Damn, where did I put that Ensure...

                  I agree let matches just end in ties way easier. I also along my team want dubs to stay.

                        You had it right and then you muddied the waters. The bolded words ARE the whole point of the rule: a quick end to the tie. And yes it does favor the lower rated player just like the previous rule, playoff without ANY handicap, favored the higher rated player last year.

                          Exactly Jordan, you're helping prove my point here. So the best idea is (drum roll please): NO PLAYOFFS.

                              Man Jordan, you're harsh. I thought I was making the world (or at least TDG) a better, more fair place and you just give me flak.
