  • The Northwest Series is Back!!!

We are on a mission to bring the Northwest together again as one giant force. The close friendships between states that came from interstate competition. The many fond memories of the Northwest Series. We believe it’s finally time to utilize peoples strength by building a network that can better facilitate Disc Golf’s main stream growth.

The Northwest Disc Golf scene has been growing exponentially the past few years. With these new players comes the need to match the growth on a structural level. The need for new courses to a alleviate stresses put on existing layouts. New clubs and organizations to structure events for these new players. A matched commitment from various regions to come together for a greater purpose.

Disc Golf offers a great form of low cost recreation during these unsure economic times . New players can buy an Innova Discs starter pack for relatively the cost of one round ball golf. The possibility for development is abundantly clear everywhere you look. Disc Golf is very unique in the fact that a course can be achieved on otherwise unusable land. It also takes very little cost to build infrastructures compared to other sports. For example, soccer fields have been known to cost upwards of $500,000. Competition level Disc Golf Courses can be built with less than $10,000. Most of which can be raised with some local support.

Priority number one is to gather the resources that are needed to take Disc Golf to a higher level. Working together to build new courses and foster new players. We are by no means saying that these steps are not already being taken. It is our belief that building an Alliance of great minds can only strengthen these efforts. Calling upon our members to offer up their particular skill in order to get our goals done in the easiest way. It only makes sense to spread out the work load to those who can offer their help.

The plan of action outlines our main goals for the NW Series. The steps that can be taken to make any event a success for future years. It is important to go through all the proper channels when planning an event. Having an organization to build a NW Tour will only help attendance at all events. Keeping detailed financial records to make everything as transparent as possible is also very important. The events that are already established were selected for their reputation as being very well ran tournaments. We have seen a real possibility for growth in these regions and wish to help develop these outstanding events.

The first year of the NW Series is going to no doubt be a trying
period. It will test our ability to come together for the betterment of Disc Golf as a whole. We need to start gathering members who can help shoulder some of the load. Like any new Series we are going to do our best to organize only the best events possible. Testing the pros to their limits while keeping it fun for the amateurs. Our focus is going to be on helping layout tournament courses that are as unique as they are challenging.

All of the $3 player fees that are gathered for the NW Series will go directly back into the Series. $2 will go directly into the Series Finals payout and the other $1 will go to Series administrative fees. Great care will be taken to document and display all expenses that are associated with these fees. Any money that is left over in the administrative fund will roll directly into the Series Finals payout.

The plan is for 2 events in Washington,
    -Windy River Open,
    -Steilacoom Spring Classic,

    4 events in Oregon,

-Emerald Valley Open (Eugene), June 13/14th
-Umpqua Valley Championship (Whistler‘s Bend), August 15/16th
-Lava Launch (Mt. Bachelor), Aug 29/30th
-Northwest Disc Golf Championships (Milo McIver) Sept 26/27th

With The Oregon State Flying Disc Overalls scheduled for Aug22/23rd, the weekend between Umpqua Valley and Lava Launch. This is the best time we have found to run this event and is going to make for a long late summer tour. This is also the weekend before the Santa Cruz Overalls and would help draw East Coast players to Oregon.

Players will only need to make one event in Washington and two events in Oregon to qualify for the finals payout. The option to play all 4 events AND the Oregon Flying Disc Overalls will also qualify players for the finals payout. This will help players make their choices when it comes to the many events that will be offered this year. Having both of the Washington events so early in the year doesn’t give some players time to schedule them in. If they wish to qualify for the NW Series finals payout they must play all the Oregon events. Final standings will be the result of each players sum of their top 3 Series finishes. We have decided to take a vote on the best method for series points and would love your input on the topic.

Every effort is being made to gather the sponsor that are needed for a series of this size. The more we can gather will only strengthen these events status as premier events to attend. In just a local effort for our Ice Bowl gather more than a dozen sponsors. We must get an organized effort to put forth a marketing plan. Having the literature available to show sponsors a real investment opportunity in Disc Golf. That is after all what most companies will base their decision on. Does Disc Golf offer the demographic that their product is marketed toward? The answer is always going to be yes when it comes to Disc Golf. We can show such a diverse player base with players from all different walks of life.

Northwest Series merchandise will be available for sale at each event. Detailed accounting of all transactions will be kept for every event. It is going to be offered as a fundraising opportunity for each area club. 2/3 of the profits from cash sales and script redemption will go directly toward the event. The remaining 1/3 is going to help raise a working balance for future NW Series merchandise. Running The Emerald Valley Open and The Oregon Flying Disc Championships will be focus of The Northwest Alliance. Each of the other 5 events will offer the merchandise profit sharing opportunities. More clarification will be available. Please contact me directly if you would like to speak more about this. I am in the process of drafting up all the appropriate literature.

Yes, these events are going to be part of the NW Series as well as other Series. Our intention is to start new events in these areas in the future. Instead of trying to build a brand new Series from scratch. We are introducing 4 new events and supporting 3 existing events. Sponsorships will be offered and merchandising will be an option for these established events. In the future we would like to start new events in these areas that are exclusively NW Series events.

The Eugene event is actually going to be at Orchard point Park and Richardson Park on Fern Ridge Reservoir. This will allow for a maximum number of players. The Westmoreland Club is going to help facilitate one of the courses for this event also.

The Overall venue is something we are working on. It is definitely going to be in Eugene on that date. The Santa Cruz Overalls being the following weekend will draw players from all over the country. Alton Baker Park is the preferred choice but would cost a lot in permit fees. Westmoreland could house this event in a pinch but we would like a bigger course. Sponsorships are needed to help alleviate the cost of these permits if we would like Alton Baker. The goal is to make this a festival atmosphere with all kinds of alternative sports present as well. More info to come.

Yes, I meant Sep 26/27th for the NW Championships

Great just what we need. Another half assed series to keep track of.
So the Wa events have lets see three sets of fees now.
            B tier fee's $6 per player,
            $3 to Wa series,
            $3 to NW series.
+ PP and theres not much left (unless the fee's go up that is) for payout..

added text It's funny how they defined there goals but not their scoring or qualiferies.
I have a question . Can a player who does not want to be part of any series have the right to refuse to allow their moeny to support something they have no intention of trying to qualify for?

What does a negative attention vampire want? Negative attention. It's a disorder similar to borderline personality. Don't make me trot out the baby with a full diaper analogy again, I think everyone is tired of smelling that.

I believe I can hit 18 greens, hit every fairway, you know Vision 54, which means you birdie every hole, thats in the back of my mind. I want to putt better, chip better. That day when I hit 18 greens and one putt, Ill know Im a complete golfer. Will that ever happen? Im not sure, but its possible. The 54 vision is always in the back of my mind.

Is there an answer for my added text question or is it true top loading Suck's money from players who ahve have no intention to qualify for one let alone every series out there

Yup full discloser is paramont but schedule saturation is still a huge problem. Adding this many extra events just delutes the player partcipation base.

                        OK here it is
Ore series is 7 events 5 to qualify
Wa series is 8 events 6 to qualify
Inland series 9 events + final 5 to qualify (final does not count)
New NW series is 6 events Reamins to be seen how many but for sure Wa will be drinving farher the The Ore players! at least Twice!

Thats 30 total events. If you were to try to qualify for all series thats 16+ events you would need to attend.

My question is Why (If the Ore series is rebuilding) offer a competive series when the established series events/clubs could use the help?

What this really says is there is so much desention between local clubs that each feels the need to host their own series. Why can't the Westy Club work with the Eugene club to continue to make Celebration the premeir event in the NW. Why can't the Eugene club help the Westy club and run something at Richardson? Heaven forbid they were to alternate years hosting that would address the "burn-out factor"

The Westy Club is working with the EDGC and will with any Club out there. Our Mission Statement is to be APART of the community as a whole. Kudos to Drew for stepping up and doing what he feels called to do. We all have our own decisions to make. Even if its to be a pessimist and sit on sideline and call your own plays. Andrew was TD for our Ice Bowl this year and we had 84 participants. We had more people there than had been seen in 15years "According to Elders". There are far more newbies who would be willing to particapate than most may think. The Westy Club's focus is on getting new Players to join in on all the fun. At the Ice Bowl we had 13 hands raised for 1st time tourney. Even Avery commented on he was not used to seeing that many hands raised.

We as a local community are excited that the Edgc, Westy Club, and the UofODGC are growing. We had 3 events in Jan, 3 events in Feb, and looking to expand opportunities. Your idea of lack of cooperation between clubs is in the past. Come to a meeting and see for yourself. Westy Meeting March 17th at Putters on Hwy 99 6:30pm, Edgc Meeting March 4th Cafe Yumm 6:00pm, and the UofODGC meets every Wednesday at the EMU on campus at 8pm.
