  • SpAce Race 2013 @ Horning's Hideout: Round #2: Pure Energy! May 18th, 2013

Round 2: Pure Energy! In space, no one can hear your cries for caffeine...

Round 2 will feature multiplying Pures, caffeine and sugar bucket kickers, plus the spaced out scoring system of Round 1! And this time there's a 5$ lunch pre-reg option for your convenience! The cash prize pool contribution will be double for each player entry this round! More details below.

SpAce Race Round 2 is an ace run tournament held at Horning's Hideout Highlands course. For an ace run you throw from the tee trying to make a hole in one with no further throws to complete the hole. 2 rounds played consecutively, 3 throws from the tee per hole per player . Bring your own discs to throw, with holes ranging from 100 feet to 270 feet. Bring extras in case of a lost disc. 12 PM -- 12:45 PM. registration/warm-up, 1 PM player meeting, 1:15 PM. tee off. 20$ buy-in includes a Latitude 64 recycled Gold Line Pure disc, 1$ for the Double Ace pot, and 6$ for the prize pool. Cash only, pay at event. 72 players max for the event (18 groups of 4).

Scoring will be 5 points for an ace, 2 points for metal.

Play with your own group of up to 4 players . Registered groups smaller than 4 players and individuals will be assigned to foursomes.

Horning's Hideout has a 4$ per person day use fee. You can also buy prorated annual passes, which are a great value. Horning's has three great eighteen hole courses, so you can always spend the rest of the afternoon playing the other courses after the event.

For Round 2 we are offering a pre-registered BBQ pork dinner for 5$. It includes a roll, carrots, chips, cookies and a Gatorade or water.

To pre-register, go to the Portland Mobile Disc lab page here:
Please "like" the page if you haven't done so yet, then under "Events" click the "Join" button for the "SpAce Race 2013 @ Horning's Hideout: Round #2" event. Once you know the names of everyone who will be in your group (2 to 4 players) and they have joined the event, send me a message with that information. If you have a non-internet using member of your group who is planning on playing send me a message with their name. If you do not Facebook but are on you can message me there as well

***New Note*** Use the following form for your playing partner/card requests and BBQ dinner RSVPs: You should be able to update it with any changes you later have.

Pre-registration priority will be given according to attendance -- as long as you're in the first round you're guaranteed early pre-registration priority for the second round, etc. With 43 players in the first round, only the first 29 new participants to pre-register during the pre-registration priority period (before May 4th) are guaranteed a slot for round 2. Priority registration is in effect until 2 weeks prior to round 2 on May 18th. From May 4th on pre-registration is open equally to any players for any remaining slots.

If you have a change of plans and are unable to attend the event after pre-registering, let me know so we can keep an accurate projection of participants.

SpAce Race 2013! consists of 8 monthly ace run tournaments held at Horning's Hideout Highlands course. The Highlands course is great for ace runs as most holes are less than 200 feet.

There will be an overall series winner for the individual with the highest point total counting their 6 best rounds (allowing for two missed events or throw out your worst two scores if you've attended all 8 rounds). Top series finishers will also receive prizes according to their 6 best scores. A small portion of each round's cash prize pool is saved for the series' winners.

With a less expensive disc in the player pack this round, the cash prize pool contribution will be double the size for each player entry.

Prizes will be awarded to the highest individual scores in each series round. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 20% of scores in each event, with a payout tier for the top 10% of scores, and a second payout tier for the next top 10% of scores. The overall winner for the round will receiver an additional prize or payout.

Constellation and Space Invader scoring will again have their own separate prizes. Only full shots thrown in an attempt to make an ace count toward Constellation and Space Invader points.

For Round 2: Pure Energy! features more ways to instantly win stuff! On half of the holes (specifics forthcoming), if you ace with the player pack Pure disc you win another Pure! You don't have to compete with the player pack Pure, but there's the potential to multiply your Pures if you do. You'll win a new recycled Pure for every Pure designated hole that you ace with your player pack Pure...infinite Pure energy!

On some holes there will be a 5 gallon bucket on top of the basket. If you knock the bucket off with your disc you win a beverage of your choice from Skye's coffee shack at Horning's Hideout, plus a large muffin! Caffeine + sugar = instant pure energy!

The Double Ace pot is won when 2+ aces are made by a group on the same hole, both rounds of 18 included. If only one group hits the Double Ace pot once in a series round, 10% of the pot will go to each non-acing member of the group, with the rest divided evenly among the acers or to the individual who alone made 2+ aces. If there are multiple Double Pot ace holes in a series round, the pot will be divided according to number of aces on the double ace holes, with none going to non-ace members of the groups. If the Double Ace pot is not won in a monthly round it will carry over to the next monthly round. If there are no Double Ace pot winners in the final round, the pot will be divided equally according to aces in the final round. The Double Ace pot will be difficult to win -- it very well might be the entire Double Ace pot up for grabs for single aces in the series' final round in November! In the first round two teams chained out shots that would have won the Double Ace pot -- so close! The Double Ace pot currently holds 63$, so it should be over 100$ after the buck from each player in round 2 gets added in.

It's going to be a double play weekend at Horning's Hideout May 18th and 19th -- SpAce Race Saturday afternoon, Disc Golf Bro's Massive Triples Sunday morning! Camp Saturday night and play both fun events! Threesomes for Massive Triples can be formed at registration by the tournament director if you've got more or less than 3 people in your group. The SpAce Race is individual play, but the Double Ace pot is won by the group, so you can play as a group of 4 with your friends. If your group is less than 4 than foursomes will be formed at registration.

As a reminder, the SpAce Race has been moved to a 12:00-1:00 pm registration, 1 pm start.

At SpAce Race 2013! round #2 there will be a raffle for some prizes at the end of the player meeting. Tickets are not bought, but earned thusly: merely existing, "liking" the Facebook page and "joining" the event there, friend referrals that end up playing in the SpAce Race for the first time, RSVPing for the post-tourney dinner, early pre-registration online, and getting checked in for the tournament between 12 and 12:30 PM. It's a "Courtesy Rewards Raffle," more or less.

SpAce Race 2013! Round #2 Recap

Who knew it could rain in spAce? None of us, I reckon, though we all found out it's possible in round #2, lol. No matter, though, as once you're disc golfing you're only thinking about disc golfing, and nothing else really matters! At the very least it stopped by the time the round was over so we could enjoy the BBQ and raffle + awards.

As a Masters age player, big shout out to the top 3 winners on the day, two of whom are Masters age, and one who is a Grandmaster! You younguns' got a lot to learn about pin point accuracy, apparently, lol.

                        ROUND 2 WINNERS & CASHES

1st Place: Josh Parker - 19 points. Parker almost won the double ace pot single-handedly when he aced #18 in his first round and then hit the "refreshment bucket" on top of #18 his second time through! As is, the double ace pot survives another round and sits at 118$, waiting for all round #3 entries to sweeten it even more.

2nd Place: Lee H. aka Rogue Rider - 15 points. Lee aced #3 his 2nd time through and Ben Gookin flirted with helping win the double ace pot narrowly missing front side on his final throw. Lee and Parker are friends that traveled together for the full weekend of tournaments at Horning's Hideout and apparently took down a lot of names judging by the amount of ass they collectively kicked on Saturday!

3rd Place: "Crazy" Mike Anderson - 14 points. Crazy is the first player this year to bang 2 aces in one SpAce Race event! He was a late substitution for the "recovering from stitches" Grand Gentleman of Gaston, TD. The local "power" card he played on featured 3 cashes, 3 aces, and 3 raffle prize wins! Better to be lucky AND good!

                        Grade "A" Space Cadet Cashers:
                        Waterloo Brandon
                        Ryan Tech
                        Ken Hall
                        Chris Crill
                        Jeremy Sines
                        Ryker Witt
                        Daniel Chambliss
Duncan of National Disc Golf Maps

                        Grade "B" Space Cadet Cashers:
                        Vince Epker
                        Zig Aloha
                        Terry Kenney
                        Jennifer Falk Barajas
                        Brian Hausotter
                        Carl Cleem
                        Chris Cordova
                        David Knowles
                        Tyler Olsen
                        Chris Dimbat

The Top Gal and winner of a Latitude 64 Diamond disc was Jen FB, who as you can see cashed outright after nabbing an ace on #11!

Congratulations also to Daniel Chambliss, the lone player to win a Pure Power Up -- he aced #15 with his player pack Pure, which packs another Pure into this player's bag.

The average score for round 2 was 5.1 points, a little higher than the round 1 average of 4.8 points. Scoring is hard, so congratulations to those who did well, and chins up for those who braved the rain but had their luck washed away.

In fairness to those who left before prizes were awarded I'm going to implement a new system for winning the Constellation and Space Invader scoring categories. Those prizes were not given out Saturday, so if you have Constellation and Space Invader points from SpAce Race round #2, those points will each be worth 1 throw in a CTP (with a separate CTP throw off for both categories) to be held right before the player meeting each SpAce Race. If you happen to miss the next SpAce Race you can use your points at the next one you attend. Top two CTPs in each category will win either a new disc or shirt, with 3rd and 4th closest in each CTP winning a drink+muffin ticket.

SpAce Race 2013! Round 3 is scheduled for June 15th. We're tentatively planning on doing burgers + veggie burgers + Mike's Magic Mac Salad for the post-round BBQ, but the exact menu may not be decided until the week prior as it depends on Mike's extremely busy schedule this time of year. A big thanks to Big Mike for cooking "at cost" for these events so we can keep the dinner price low!

Updated Hole Commander charts coming later today...
