  • Jackson County Course Hopes

    Jackson County:

Three master plans for White City's Sportsman's Park have been drafted; the county held a meeting on these February 9th. All three options presented (which focus on engines and guns) leave a hilly treed section (50 acres?) unused. In the exhibit discussions afterwards, the engineers and facilitators seemed positive about the idea for disc golf, all warning us that there are trees in the way (heh) and rough terrain (bring it on!).
The parks department is welcoming community input. It would be marvy if y'all would go take a look here:

and send them a word of support for disc golf. The area we are hoping for is in the southeast section, to the right of the drag strip. You might worry about the shooting range, but the hill between us relieves that problem.

    Thanks,
    Sue Currie

Yup, I count it as being 50 acres east of the drag strip, south of the racing oval, and north of the canal. Of course, you'll probably have to maintain some separation from the canal, but it's still plenty of land. And very steep: much of it is almost a 20% gradient.

As for the shooting range(s)... the one in the southwest part of the park has a hill behind it, but what about the "long bore rifle range" to the east of the drag strip? If those guys are shooting southward -- which they almost certainly are -- it could be a problem. Their errant shots are going to be headed straight for the disc golf hill.

        Thanks, Adam.
That's a good question. We asked the "presenters" at all three options exhibits that question, though, and they saw no problem. If it presents a risk I'm sure the parks will stop us cold there. (Laughing, one way or the other.) Whew, we'll have to ask again!

I did notice that on the Google Map maintained by the Medford Rifle & Pistol Club, it says that the High Power Range is "open during matches and practice only." So maybe the disc golf course would have to be closed during those times -- but how to enforce that?

Note that the long-bore rifle folks do target shooting at 600 yards! So presumably their bullets can travel a lot farther than that. Yeah, it's probably rare that one of them leaves the range entirely, but if someone sneezes while taking a shot... It would take a wall 75' high to fully protect the hillside.

You guys made the paper, with a photo that includes Another Primate herself:

Thanks for the link! Gold Hill gave us permission to put in tone poles on the contingency that the fairy shrimp won't be too frightened by us, but only for three months after which they'll evaluate its continuance. (At that time, they'll also consider allowing us to put in baskets, and even putting something in their budget for that.) So, that's hopeful.

Medford, on the other hand, was very bad news. Not only is the Chrissey Park area stalled for an erosion control study, it's years away; we knew that but had hoped they'd allow us to put in a tone course in a less-desirable (to us) part of Chrissey. NO. And they've dissolved their disc golf commission. And they won't meet with us again until Chrissey is ready to go.

When the paper wanted a photo shoot, we snagged portables and met them at Holmes. Had fun reliving the old days playing Holmes.
