I had an unwitnessed ace 5 months into playing. It took 3 years for me to get one that was witnessed.

what is this nonsense (oh, sorry, am i being judgemental? :p) about having to have witnesses or it doesn't count? or am i misunderstanding the belief system? is this something that a lot of folk cotton to because, frankly, it reeks of bull puckey (is that how you spell "puckey"?) to me... i play probably at least half my golf in zen golf solo mode... and if i got an ace it would be an ace & i would certainly count it as an ace and brag on it as such... this whole "witness" idea feels like... well, an accusation of dishonesty...
p.s. i'd been golfing for like 12 years before i got an ace on a basket... and like 14 before i got an ace on a basket that was longer than 55ft... lots and lots of aces on the pins at my home course in the years leading up to that... but an ace on a pin is sort of different...

That takes you out of the running for best golfer without an ace.
I hereby nominate Dan'l The Clanger Langer as "Best golfer without an ace." He has been playing like 8 years (or more?) without one and he is a damn fine hukker. So while we give him boatloads of crap I think this to be at least somewhat of an honor, right?

I played about 5 years before my first. I have hit chains and come close. I still have not hit another since. I think it does relate to how you play. If you run everything you will likely hit an ace at some point in time. Placement and strategy lend to less aces. I am not saying this philosophy works for everyone I just tend to see a distinct difference in playing styles of those who hit a lot of aces and those who don't.

I definitely hear you there, I just see small distance holes and I couldnt imagine doing anything but going for the pin! I love to hear so much diversity in time played vs. 1st Acer!
Keep 'em coming!!! And by the way, NICE WORK on the aces everybody!!!!

13 years. Then I got my 2nd one about 8 months later. Witness on the first one, no witness on the 2nd, but if I was going to lie about it I would just say i've got about 40 of them. :D ( I also got a practice shot ace last spring when I threw my drive, then took out another disc I had recently bought and wanted to try out and i'll be damned if it didn't go in. But I don't count that as one of my "real" aces.) I come close all the time, but I guess i'm just not meant to ace much. :(

My first two aces were at McIver in the original set up (which dates me quite a bit). Hole 3 followed by hole 4 (not the same round). My 2 favorite aces are Hole 13 in Anchorage Alaska (310' guarded by 2 fir trees...it was a line drive that went straight at the basket from the start and never went over 10' high) and a 335' ace at Willamette Park (in an Oregon Series) who's basket was out of view and had to be told it went in by the group ahead.

for me it was about 6-8 months, but that was playing almost everyday. and in my book an ace is an ace, doesnt matter if anybody else sees it or not because im not trying to get aces to "prove myself" to anybody. for me getting an ace is all about Personal satisfaction, not about "did you see that?!" or " I have (blank) number of aces!!!" the only thing i like to brag about is that with my first ace, before i threw i turned to my wife and said "hold that thought while i throw a hole in one" then WANG! disc went in the basket!!! that was a great time!

I'm used to this being the end result of somebody asking to hold their beer.

I had played for nearly 5 years without an ace. The next 4 months: ace in New Orleans, ace in Albuquerque, ace in Flagstaff, ace in Medford, OR! The previous month I had my first chain out in Mobile, AL.
With that being said, there was a clear progression in my game. 1) Throw far enough/accurate enough to regularly reach the basket. 2) get lucky and hit chains, then get an ace. 3) Improved my game and learned that aces are not really the best DG shots. 4) Improved more and try to land near the basket, not fly by (duh). 5) Get pissed because I rarely ace anymore!!!!
first world problem: too good to ace? Ha!

I got my 1st ace within a month of starting. I owned one yellow champion beast & I threw it in at Juel old hole 3 right in front of a lady on a horse who I elected not to wait for. Later that week I lost that disc across the creek.
I believe that was in 2006. Since then I've thrown zero aces. I've hit basket way too many times & solid chains plenty of times. Am I cursed by not waiting for the lady or losing the disc? Or was it the fact that I didn't give a dollar to the 1st ace I saw on a doubles card that same year (same hole Juel old 3)?
I have thrown some practice aces (multiple drives one hole) but those don't count. Solo aces should definitely count if your playing a no extra shots (scoring) round.
When will my next ace be?

I agree with this 100% (says the girl who's never had an ace). But in all seriousness, historically my train of thought has been to throw so that my disc will hyzer out right towards the basket. If I were to run at the basket and miss then I end up 30+ feet away and will most likely take a 3 because my putting sucks. BUT, as my putting has been getting better and better (or just less sucky) my goal this summer has been to be more aggressive with both upshots and drives knowing I still have a run at a decent putt. So, long story short, yes playing placement golf and strategy makes a big difference :) and I blame 10 years of conservative golf on my lack of an ace :)

I've been playing disc golf for the past 8 years or so, 6 years competitively, hundreds of rounds at rockwood and vance and yet I STILL do not have a single ace, at least 10 chain outs, many more basket hits, nothing will stick...

I hit my first ace at Hole #11 at Willamette Park with a flex forehand candy pro firebird one year into playing. Starting the summer of 2003, hit that ace in June of 2004. Interestingly it was also the first hole that I had ever birdied, about a few weeks into playing. I've always had a good memory, and certainly a mind that likes statistics, but for some reason I have forgotten a lot of the aces I have hit...every now and then I'll remember one and small wave of joy and nostalgia wash over me. I have kept track of all my tourney aces (9 in total) and I estimate over 45 aces in my career. I have been a bit light on the aces this year (no surprise considering the quantity of golf I've played this season). Perhaps 2013 will be an ace filled year!

Of course it would be treelove to call me out. It was just over a year of playing.
I am curious as to what the perceived "indirect message" is but being that I trust treelove I went ahead and smelled my Ma anyway! :)

Took me about 14 years to hit my first one in April...at least I had good timing and did it during dubs which had a killer ace pot. Haven't had 2nd one, as others have said plenty of chains and baskets though. Had plenty of aces on object style/pin/tone holes over the years but I don't count those, baskets matter to me. As I always say, I've played way to long to look this bad. :)
good thread, I like reading about people's trials and tribulations in the world of aces...more enjoyable to me than those who have just nailed their 81st ace after playing for 7 months! :headbang:
