Greetings,

I got the phone call at 5:45 this morning that we had been awarded the bid to host Pro Worlds in 2014. I'm not sure how Mike was able to get the news out before me, but thanks Mike.

For the last year or so the core group of Cris Bellinger, Jeff Hagerty, Jeff Mittl, Mike Phillips and I have been working on putting forth a bid to host a PDGA World Championship in Portland, Oregon. This is the culmination of something that has been talked about for over two decades by disc golfers around the Portland area including Theo Pozzy, Jerry Miller, Dan Denny and many others too numerous to name, but instrumental none the less. Thank you all.

Now the hard work begins. We will need many people to come together and make this venture a success. It is our hope that we can rely on people from throughout the region to volunteer and make this a Worlds hosted by the Great Northwest and not just Portland, Oregon. In the near future we will be soliciting submissions for artwork and website design and construction. We will be also looking for people to join committees, volunteer as course TD’s and many other duties. We will need some time to determine what exactly needs to be done to move forward, but when we have things resolved we will make a public announcement.

Thanks again to everyone who made this possible and thanks in advance to those who will step forward and make this event a great success.

So, what courses here would be involved? That is something that could be discussed now?

Milo East, Milo West, Trojan, Pier, Blue Lake and a redesigned Roster Rock.

Those are awesome choices, and very geographically convenient. I assume it will be two rounds of 18 each day.

I can't wait to be a part of this as a volunteer, and hopefully a player as well. Pro Grand Master here I come.

Not yet completely, but we have a few ideas. It will most likely be a temporary redesign unless we get complete by off from the Parks Dept.

why a redesigned rooster rock instead of dabney? I assume hornings is out because of the baskets. but another one thats missing would be stubb stewart.

In my opinion, Dabney is not a Pro Worlds caliber course.

That said - I'm very excited about Pro Worlds in Portland!

We are blessed to have so many great courses throughout this State and Washington. We looked at all of the courses and evaluated them to see if they would work for this tournament. In the end, there are a lot of reasons for our deciding on the courses above. We were looking for the best maintained, most challenging and highest quality tournament ready courses. We were also looking at courses that could be paired together so that you could play them on the same day and cut down on travel times between them. The courses you mentioned just don't meet those standards. A redesigned Rooster Rock, however would meet those standards.

This thread has way more questions than people volunteering to help out, how about we turn that around and build on the momentum of getting the 2014 Pro Worlds. Nothing is cut in stone but as a team we have not been working on this for a year with some willy nilly ideas. We have made the necessary contacts and relationships in order to foster a stellar event.

Collectively the core team has 20+ years of organizing and running disc golf events. All have also been involved in disc golf locally, regionally or nationally for many years. We will need so much help its hard to put it into specific tasks but trust me when I say, If you volunteer to help or sign up for a committee we will welcome you with open arms.

Hey how did you hear about that, must have been that little birdie Jeff Hemmerling. Yup we will have a course but its a private course. I walked it and flagged the tees and baskets today. Its a nice piece of land they let us use away from everyone else with elevation changes and fun OB lines.

I would very much like to know why Horning's was not on this list, considering our baskets are approved for PDGA championships. We are no farther out than Trojan or Roster, so what's the deal?????

Congrats on the successful bid, Portlanders. Now the really hard work begins.

I would welcome anyone in the area to help promote disc golf within your community by getting involved and submitting Disc Golf Live video magazine for broadcast at your local community access station:

http://www.pcmtv.org/

This is a great resource and having DG on TV will help grow public awareness of our great sport and your upcoming Championship. I'm happy to provide free program DVDs or downloads, but it takes a local resident to get involved and submit the programs for broadcast.

I'm also happy to include Portland course tours in upcoming events, or perhaps event footage from your courses.

Lots of movers and shakers in your neck of the woods, perhaps one is up to the challenge of a little paperwork and a trip down to PCMTV now and then. Not a big investment at all, considering the benefits for the disc golfing community.

Lots of other stations in the area, same offer: free program DVDs to individuals who have the initiative it takes to be a leader locally and get the job done.

Take care,

Joe

I don't know why, but I do know that I wouldn't want to spend all the money to travel to a Worlds and putt on tire rims. It's just kind of the way it is, even though your baskets are approved. That's just my perspective and has nothing to do with any decisions made about this awesome development in Oregon disc golf.

If they are PDGA approved, IMO whatever is 'below the chains' doesn't really matter. If the chain configurations work, that's what counts.
I'm so excited about playing in this gig that it doesn't really matter what course or baskets I throw at because all of the old farts in my SGM division will be playing the same ones. :biggrin2:

Just a summary of comments:

1. Mr. Hemmerling is a gossip monger - Mike, lets have a masters only event at Tektronix - I will
show up for the work parties - even if it is for employees only (if I can get a hall pass)! Get permission to have one "charity" event - "help feed the poor, socially challenged Tek SW\HW engineers"

2. It DID cross my mind that Hornings big course could have been considered as part of the event. I sympathize with Bob's comment.

3. I am thinking the event will promote people to get a PRO PDGA membership next year and move up! I will make the feeble attempt to do this and shovel out the extra cash. Watch out Jim Oates...

4. can you guess what pub I am drinking a Victory Storm King Imperial Stout right now?!?!?

Cheers

I'm Volunteering, You got my number. I can run a crew, do what I'm told, and do the right job the 1st time. We need to start soon, at least planning, everyone gets busy and it will take an army of people to make this happen. Let me know when you have my marching orders ready. I will plan my vacations around it.

I'm in for helping out. Keep us all informed and let us know dates asap.

The tournament is scheduled to take place the first week of August 2014. There will be events throughout that week starting off with mixed doubles and BYOP doubles the weekend before on August 2nd and 3rd. We are still in negotiations with the PDGA on the exact schedule, but have proposed to have the finals on Sunday, August 10th. We would like to have the event culminate in conjunction with a disc sports festival that would be held during the final weekend and located at Blue Lake Park.

As previously stated, all of this is tentative except for the approximate dates depending upon the outcome of the negotiations with the PDGA. Once we have the website up, all future official announcements will come from there.

Thanks for your interest in helping out.
