Hello all,

I have a dilemma for the weekend of March 21-22, 2009. I am on the waiting list for the Walla Walla tournament – but I am thinking of just bowing out and making a road trip from Seattle down to the Portland area for the weekend of golf and photography..So I am looking for some people to play with over the weekend, drink some beers and eat some good food shoot some photos..along with showing the me courses. I talked with Jerry Miller over the phone and he said to play these courses (below)…Anyone willing to meet up and show an old man around the courses?:pirate:

I am not sure where I am staying yet so if anyone has a good hotel in mind please let me know..

• Trojan
• Pier Park
• Dabney
• Timber Park
• McIver
• Rooster Rock
• Skyline

Thanks

Skip Rooster and play Milo twice. Hell, skip them all and just play Milo. :D

I would love to show you around but I will be out of town on a road trip of my own!

If you are at Skyline, you are just 13 miles short of Lucky Mud. You can play 18 or 23 holes here.

If you go to Skyline, you must play nearby Lucky Mud (private)! Quick, request a tee time from the course pro!

Better yet, head over to Horning's Hideout and play both courses and ask Bob if he can give you a tour of the third course.

While I am all for free speech, this sort of offensive racist language has no place here. Moderators? Can you clean this up?

Thanks all - Sorry I stirred the pot...LOL

One of the things I am looking for in my travel this coming weekend is unique courses with great phtography oppertunites and native courses...native in the way that most people will think of a NW course to be..huge trees, moss, ferns etc...So more of the atomsphere and experience so to say...

I am off to the airport and look forward to meeting some new friends!

Whistlers Bend IMO has the atmosphere and your experience there you probably won't forget.:)
Too bad it's 200 miles south of PDX.
Have fun Scott.

Well if photo ops are what you want make sure to add Hornings to you MUST PLAY list. The courses are great and the landscape ... you'll see.

Almost all of the courses around PDX are worth playing. NONE, however, can hold a candle to the mighty Milo. We are so unbelievably blessed to have disc golf nirvana in our backyard.

For "Northwest" photo ops, I'd nominate Pier, then Horning's, then McIver.

Sam

For photo ops, I would make it McIver, Horning's, Pier, Dabney. In that order.

Tim

Haven't made it to Horning's yet so can't say anything about that, but the Mud trumps Pier and Milo in terms of Northwestiness, IMO. Also, even though Sam isn't a fan of Rooster, I still think it's worth playing, especially if you're looking for aesthetic values. I've only played it once, but I remember the east course having some cool photo ops.

Thank you all,

What about Benson Park - I know its only 9 holes but the PDGA directory says its has a view of the falls? And the Rooster courses are near by?

A few reasaons I ask for the photo ops -

1. Is I have taking photos of Disc etc for close to 30 years...as well as other sports
2. I have been asked to take some of the shots at a few of the KC courses (signature holes) for the full color fundrasier disc...so practice is a good thing!
3. I have discovered a new technique called HDR which has really opened my eyes to getting some of those tricky shots and IMO it makes for a 'close to' 3d and dynamic range of what your eyes can see..depending on how much I tweak the software...I have yet to do this for disc but I think it applies well for most of the situations that are on a course...shadows, lighting etc..

:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

You'll see what I mean if you go there. Benson has some great views, but it is NOT a destination course. The first hole is 300 with a few trees, but after that most holes are 125' or shorter. There are several putter ace runs. It is a very fun course for beginners and/or kids. But it's not the kind of place that you would go far out of your way for. The other negative is that it is right on the highway so it will be pretty noisy.

It's a little east of Rooster Rock so it makes perfect sense to play them both. After you're done, continue east for one mile (there is no westbound return to the freeway from Benson) and stop at Multnomah Falls.

You could throw in a trip to Dabney, just so you can say you had an opportunity to play some disc golf. The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most scenic areas of the state, and definately worth a trip. Just don't make it a disc golf trip.

For a better golf experience in the area, I'll agree with the others. My choices, in order: Horning's Hideout, Milo, Pier, Dabney. Horning's edges out Pier ever so slightly because it has a little more variety.... But not by much.

Wherever you go... Enjoy!

Milo might be "Near-vana," but the Mud is NIRVANA.

Lets go to the tape:

Mud Course Pro: Ol' Bob
Milo Course Pro: It doesn't matter what your name is.

Winner: Lucky Mud

# 0f holes at the Mud: 23 including at least three or four mini holes
# of hole at Milo: 28

Winner: Draw - besides the hike through the Mud will kick your butt more than the walk through Milo

Cell phone service at the Mud: 1%
Cell phone service at Milo: 35%

Winner: Lucky Mud

There are many more intangibles that I don't have time to list. But I'm sure you get the point. I like to stir the pot, too. And, I like the Mud WAY more than Milo.

Just my hay penny.

Yeah? Well, let's throw Horning's Hideout into the mix.

- Terraformer-In-Chief: Bob Horning
- Cell phone coverage: 20%
- # of holes: 36, soon to be 54.

There's your Discvana. :trophy:

Adam, my beef is not with Horning's. I love me some Hornings, as well. Its because it reminds me of the Mud. I just get tired of the Milo supposedly being the Holy Ground of NW Disc Golf. Meh.

Well, I agree with you on that count. A lot of disc golfers like courses that look like ball-golf courses... I'm not one of 'em.

I don't mind courses that look like ball golf courses, I just think variety is the spice of life. I just tire of the endless praise heaped upon that course. Meh.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Milo, and if I lived 12 miles from Milo my vote would lean S. East. However, with Hornings 12 miles from my driveway and Pier 15 my vote goes West. As for Nirvana or Discvana, that's a state of mind, not location.

True dat. Trying to say which is better between the Mud and Milo is like trying to compare Goodfellas and The Big Lebowski. They're both great in their own right, for different reasons, but they're both in my short list of all time faves. I guess it depends on what you're looking for, but I think you're pretty much guaranteed to have a great time at either. Man, it must suck having those kinds of dilemmas!

If you're going to be IN the gorge, don't forget about The Dalles and Sirosis. If you're there on a fairly clear day the photo ops are endless and spectacular. Trojan is also a photo op kinda course. Seems I remember someone saying they were watching a pair of Bald Eagles there.

We got bald eagles too, and redtails, and kestrels, and wood ducks, and herons, and...

...and rainy days. Durn! Photo ops are a bit weather dependent. Is there a filter that takes out the gray?

Ya should have been here yesterday.

Lots of strange personal biases are coming out in this thread. I'll try to add my (hopefully) more objective 2 cents.

If photography is a high priority, Trojan cannot be missed. Fall is probably the best time, but regardless of the season Trojan is always one of the most picturesque courses in the NW. If the cooling towers were still up it would be even better for the surreal contrast between man made power and the wildlife that surrounds it.

As for a direct comparison between Lucky Mud and Milo, it simply cannot be made. They are too far apart geographically so the choice to play one or the other is always going to be heavily dependent on one's proximity to either course. They both have a lot of the same qualities that make a course great. Milo is more accessible for more people and has more variety with the multitude of tee and pin placements, so that gives it an edge in my opinion.

Horning's Hideout is also great but it is unquestionably not in the same class yet. No concrete tees and baskets that don't catch as well combined with short course length. No contest. With a 3rd course coming that will boast more length and permanent tees presumably in the works at some point, Horning's has the potential to be in this discussion in the future.

So thank you to everyone for the input...I wish I wasn't so old and the weather was better..

I ended up playing in one day: McIver, Pier and Hornings...Whew!

Not bad for an old man! The next day I was sore and it was raining way too hard to get motivated to play

I ended up with Stump town tag #17 (from playing at Pier)....so hopefully I will be back in town at some point to play for a better number...if not..you all need to make sure you come up to Aspen for Kiss the Sky..

Next time I will make sure to Play Trojan and Club Mud...

Thank you again
