Stumptown Disc Golf
presents
2012 Oregon Disc Golf Championships
Sept 15th & 16th
3 rounds of 18 holes at Trojan Disc Golf Course

This PDGA sanctioned B-Tier invitation only event is designed to deliver the USDGC experience to the very best players in Oregon. In order to crown 4 Oregon State Champions, we will again be setting up Trojan Disc Golf Course in its most challenging layout ever. If you have any doubts about the difficulty of this course just ask someone who played the event last year. This course is no joke.

Divisions & Number of Players
76 total players
32 Open Men, 6 Open Women, 32 Advanced Men, 6 Advanced Women

Invitations
Invitations will be awarded to the top eligible finishers in each division based on their overall score for that weekend. Players can only qualify once and invitations are non-transferable. In the event of a tie, I will give a spot to both players and remove one spot from a later qualifying event.

This is an “opt-in” event. To be eligible to qualify for the ORDGC players will need to pay $10 prior to the start of the first round of play at each qualifying event for their scores for that weekend to count. This $10 is NOT included in any entry fee for any of the above listed events. This is an entirely separate event and fee.

I hope to have online registration up before too long, and I will update this announcement once that happens.

Qualifier Events
While I may add additional events, the following events will serve as qualifiers for the 2012 ORDGC: (Number in parenthesis indicates the number of available invites)
Disc-Go-Ball - (MPO-3, FPO-1, MA1-3, FA1-1)
Great Northwest Open - (MPO-4, FPO-1, MA1-4, FA1-1)
Rose City Open - (MPO-4, FPO-1, MA1-4, FA1-1)
Beaver State Fling
Willamette Open
Calapooia Classic

The number of invitations given away at each qualifier will vary depending on the number of players in that event, but as a general rule, each event will award the following number of invitations:
Open Men - 4, Open Women - 1, Advanced Men - 4, Advanced Women – 1. The only exceptions will be if a division fills early due to ties etc.

Masters
Masters players are welcome to play in the ORDGC, but there will be no age based divisions. Masters will be eligible for invitations provided they play the same course at the same time as their non-protected division. For example: a Pro Master can qualify based on his score IF he played the same course at the same time as Open players. I will be asking TDs to make accommodations for this, but ultimately it will be up to them. Pro Masters are obviously welcome to try to qualify by playing in the Open division.

Schedule
I will have the course ready for practice rounds mid-morning on Friday, Sept 14th.
On both days we will have our players meeting at 8:30AM and should be teeing off around 9:00am.

PLEASE NOTE:
I am well aware some people do not agree with how I have chosen to structure this event. Hopefully, they will respect me and the decisions I have made enough to keep their bashing to a minimum. With that said, I WILL be moderating this thread to keep things civil. After all of the hate mail I have received regarding the BSF Am Lottery my patience is pretty thin at the moment.

yet they will enter the lottery again next year if that is what they have to do and then what if they win a slot.... F-ing ungrateful :waaah: whinny :waaah: little shyts. i'm willing to bet not 1 of them will apologize for anything said :rolleyes2:

I played ORDGC for the first time last year. I agree with Jeff... this course is no joke.
At one point our entire card shed tears and we only had 5-10 minutes between our 2 marathon rounds and ended up playing until is started getting dark. 4-5 lost discs and some of the worst blisters I've had in awhile.

That being said... I hope that I play well enough to get invited to play again this year!! I skippped my own state's Championships to do so last year and I have NO REGRETS!!

I think one way to streamline the BSF lottery would be to remove hate mail senders from future lotteries.

I am going to try to qualify for ORDGC this year!

I felt really bad that you guys had such a short break, but the alternative was to finish completely in the dark. However, I am confident everyone understands the importance of speed of play now ;)

It was stressful but every one of us knew that it needed to be done and rallied. I'm pretty sure not a single one of us felt that it was the wrong decision... none of use wanted to drag that day into the darkness!!!

We were definitely not upset or mad... just a little stressed. That was a rough first round. The second round was way better!!

When I first said I was going to throw down a few invitations at the Disc-Go-Ball, I saw about 50 people on the registration list. I figured 2-MPO, 2-MA1, and 1 each for the ladies would be adequate. Well, by the time we got rolling the field had increased to 80 people, so I made an executive decision to bump up the invites to 3-MPO, 3-MA1, and 1 each for the ladies. Of course those Bend guys managed to tie it up, so now I have to give yet another slot away.

Here are the names of those who qualified at the Disc-Go-Ball.
MPO - Jeff Mittl
MPO - Jason Pinkal
MPO - Matt Murphy (tie)
MPO - Mike Ruzicka (tie)

MA1 - Marcus Crespi
MA1 - Ned Blaisdell
MA1 - Josh Petit

FPO - Sally West

I hope to qualify, this course is INSANE! I now play about 4 holes in this layout everytime I go to Trojan because of how epic they are. If I don't qualify I will definitly be there to caddy-spot-set up- etc...!

You rock Jeff, I think that you have set up a really fair system for this and the BSF. Maybe the people complaining are the same people sandbagging and the topic of discussion for the eternal sandbaggers thread?

Lee,

Bummer. I do try to get the word out at every event and I did make the rounds. I think I had 15-20 people trying to qualify at the GNO so some people did find out. In any case, I will be at the Fling and you can pay your $10 to try to qualify when you check in.

For some reason most disc golfers in Eugene choose not to read this forum (I'm not saying this is your case Lee) and stick to Faceborg for online info. The ORDGC has been a huge, very visible topic here for three years. For the most part, if it's happening in Oregon you can get all the info about it here, and it is worth the time to check in regularly.

Except of course for those Eugene based TD's who don't list their events here. How many people here knew there was a four-round, two-day PDGA sanctioned event last weekend in Cottage Grove?

It was a head-scratcher for sure why a fundraiser PDGA sanctioned event was not publicized anywhere except Facebook. I would have played if I could have, and I support the Lane Community College disc golf club, but I don't understand the stealth approach to a fundraiser event. People love fundraisers, and they love PDGA sanctioned events. but they have to know about them to support them.

Anyway, thread is drifting here.....I really wanted to try to qualify for the ORDGC this year and play the monster layout, but it looks like I have other responsibilities that weekend. Bummed. Maybe I will try to qualify anyway, just for snicks, and if I do someone will get in off the waitlist.

He did qualify, but although he paid, his name somehow didn't make it on to the master list before I posted the results. And... since I cannot, in good conscience, uninvite someone I've already invited, I'm letting it roll.

So... you just back the hell off Benotsch! Perhaps you should spend some of that excess energy you've got on convincing your wife to let your come play Trojan. :)

Reminder to everyone playing in the ORDGC. You have until the end of the day on Thursday to register if you want a shirt.

Jeff,
Sorry about the dumb questions...Are there anymore qualifiers? How many will be allowed in to the tournament? And will there be anyone allowed into the tournament that has not qualified at a "qualifier"?

No problem about the questions...

No, there are no more qualifiers remaining.

I have 72 slots available in the event.

If spots go unfilled by those who actually did qualify, I try to fill the spots with people who tried to qualify, but did not quite make it.

Booyah. yeah, don't go rainin' on my parade Emma. I'm not going to drive four hours to get my ass kicked and lose discs for anything less than a women's cut t-shirt. Hell, I can lose discs a lot closer to home. Just ask Willamette Pass. :headbang:

The layout is truly rewarding as a golfer. If you play conservatively you can score well, if you play aggressive you could score better but likely to score worse on average. If the wind changes between rounds it will play like a completely different course.

I'm tired, scratched up, beat up, beat down, sore, and demoralized but yet, still had an AMAZING weekend. Damn you Trojan. Damn you and your green scary nuclear water.

Having said all that, (ie- no more bitching Sally....)Thank you Hagerty and all the volunteers for such an Amazing weekend. All you spotters saved our butts more times than I can count and you are appreciated more than a simple thank you can express. And Steve (and the other gentleman out there Saturday, I didn't catch your name)... What can I say? You R-O-C-K. Thank you SO MUCH for all your paddling and retrieving.

And Thank you Innova for making plastic that floats

I also wanted to say great job Jeff and thanks to all the volunteer spotters.

The magnum layout was epic as always.

You know when a store has a little contest where you guess how many jelly beans are in the big jar? I think we should have a contest to see who can have the closest guess as to how many P's there were on the scorecards for the weekend....

What a weekend!

Thanks to everyone who came out to play the monster this year. I hope you all had a great time. From my perspective it was an amazing weekend. We ran into almost no hiccups, the weather was awesome and we finished with enough spare light left for me to play a few holes with Chris Graham and DC Dan when I was done cleaning up.

I like to give props to Nate Sexton for playing some of the most disgustingly consistent, awesome golf I've ever seen played out there. He shot a 28 on every single 9 up until the final 9... where he shot a 27. Crazy good golf there. Well done Nate.

I would also like to thank a few people for all of their help with this event.

Stumptown Disc Golf: It is not possible to run events like this without a good foundation of support and the club is always there.

Next Adventure: For the use of the Urban RV, and for their ongoing support of Portland disc golf

Keen Footwear: For kicking down some swag for awards as well as a pair of shows for the 4 state champions.

PGE: For letting me use this amazing course every year.

Disc-Van-Go: For hauling players and volunteers out to the course each day.

Sausage Guy: For having hot coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner available to those of us who camped.

Zu-Glass: For the awesome trophies

And finally...

Jordan Lewis: Once again the MVP. Jordan, you rock! Jordan helped me set everything up on Friday and during the final 9 on Sunday was busy breaking everything down so we were almost done by the time we finished awards. I can't even begin to tell you how helpful that is.

Genessa Prictor: For helping with scoring all weekend.

Mike Phillips: For driving out on Sunday just to write checks and ended up helping Jordan break the course back down at the end of the day.

Cindy McMahan: For running around Portland all day Friday cleaning up loose ends and picking up scrip etc.

Steve McMahan: - The Crazy Kayak-Guy! For fishing out as many as he could reach!

And the spotters, who make the whole thing run smoothly:

Chris Graham
Dan Brown
Scott Searles
Chris Brow
DC Dan Dulaney
Pops Dulaney
Gawain Stern
Randy King

If I forgot anyone, please forgive me... I'm still a little tired.

Well as for me, this was a very relaxing casual stress free weekend sitting in my kayak floating effortlessly amongst the water weeds and dead frogs. If it wasn’t for all the golfers throwing their pride and joy discs into the water I could have had a comfortable restful nap as well :wink2:. I had a great time shagging discs this weekend. My friend/co-worker Evan Osterlund was assisting me part of Saturday so props to him. Please let me know if I disturbed any players during the event. I tried to make it a point to not paddle when you guys were putting or driving. If I did they my apologies to you. This was the first time I've attempted this and it’s a work in progress. I look forward to next year and maybe I can round a few more guys with yaks to come out and shag. It’s a big pond. Thanks for the workout. Cheers!

... but what a great weekend it was, anyway...

best card of women i have ever golfed with. wonderful to get to see zoe andyke playing inwardly focused, purposefully, mindfully and to her full potential. women's disc golf has come a long way in the last year and we proved it (okay, just to ourselves 'cause no one else was around to see us) this weekend... and even tho we had boat loads (or kayak loads i should say in honour of steve mcmahan, our saviour) of fun (many, many belly laughs and nasal snorts of joy) the professionalism exhibited on our card was impressive. this layout at trojan brings up a ton of rules and situations that you don't always run into and it was always handled and responded to in the appropriate way.

thank you to jeff hagerty for making it happen and doing it right.

thank you to all of the spotters: chris graham, gawain, scott searles, randy, chris brow, dan brown, dc dan and dc dad (aka paul) and the other guy... blond kid? maybe his name is tyler? thank you so much for being out there all day NOT golfing... it is really hard.

thank you to all of the volunteers who worked making it happen in other ways.

and thank you to genessa (aka mrs. the brit) most especially... you know why... but hagerty won't let me talk about it...

thank you to evan and steven mcmahan in the kayaks... steve, i'm glad you had fun and as far as you ever being a distraction... well, first of all, you were very discreet and polite but beyond that it was, in fact, very reassuring anytime i saw you out there... if you were there i was like, "oh, hanley, you're fine... go ahead and throw your baby boss in the water 3 times on one hole... steven's got your back... he'll totally get it for you."

and thank you to The Cootie Cat for waking me up at 5:45 on sunday morning after i turned my alarm off and tried to go back to sleep. she stood on my face and yelled at me. she's a very good cat.
