Once again I am privileged to announce that the Fort Walla Walla Disc Golf Club will be hosting a "B" Tier event the weekend of May 5th and 6th as part of the 2012 Washington State Series.

I will be posting a flier once I get a chance to reduce its size :(

It should be mentioned for those that like/love wine that ASC is the same weekend as Walla Walla's Spring Release.

Local lodging: Plan on camping or staying in Pasco or Pendleton and driving the 40-50 miles.

Camping (http://www.bluevalleyrv.com/information.html)[/U] -$30 per night with water and electricity on each site. Up to 4 per site.
The site is in town and is about 8 mins from the course but you are not walking distance to any stores.

Other options: Find a backyard or basement or spare floor space at a locals house. There are currently 2 houses willing to open their yards with one of them (mine) willing to open the basement, living room, kitchen, just about anywhere you can lay to relieve traveling expenses. All the two of us are asking is that you prearrange with us so we can keep the numbers within reason.

*There is NO camping at Fort Walla Walla no matter what you read (some sites need to be updated)

3/2 Added Flier+lodging requests

Online registration will be up soon on www.Northwestsignup.com (Mike is great) and the only delay was on my end with filling out the paperwork. You can also send in the flier with a check/money order etc.

I am confident that your first trip to ASC will NOT be your last.

Thanks much! Looks like the cheapest option in the area, too bad there isn't a state park or something, but I guess it will have to do to play the sushi. Thanks again. Sounds like a great tourny, hope it is as good as everyone says! look forward to the big trip.

Am attempting to lock in backyards of local players. I know I have at least one option and working on a second.
PM me and we can talk about it more.

I just booked the Super 8 and I would say its Super expensive compared to other Super 8 Hotels I have stayed in. You fellows must be super swank up there in Walla Walla. Another note is that the PDGA discount does not work at this location. If someone finds out otherwise please let me know.

If one of the locals could go by there and find out if another discount is available through the event that would be good as well.

Seems a lot of the other hotels are filling up or are full already due to the spring wine release.

A couple years ago the disc golfers wore out their welcome at the host hotel.... Probably why the PDGA discount doesn't apply.

All the more reason to find a house or yard to crash at while in town. Also they did jack their prices up for that weekend (usually 60-70 a night).

Not sure why the pdga discount does not work there. However it is past actions that have made it so as a club we do not approach hotels to be "host" hotels.

I got it and I am not complaining here but why was the super 8 recommended in this thread?

I remember now about the rowdy disc golfers who screwed things up. Sorry to bring up the past for you guys. Will Aloha Sushi be having its deals again this year even with the Spring Release going on.

Will the course be set up in the Blacks for the entire weekend or Will there be pin and tee pad changes throughout the weekend?

I recommend Super 8 for they are one of the easier hotels for people to get to the course from. Get on 12 take Myra exit go until you see fort walla walla. Its also the one near grocery stores and fast food etc. Usually they are the best option (for the price) that has a continental breakfast.

Aloha Sushi will be hosting our saturday evening saki and sushi fun.

We will run two full 18 hole courses (blue and black) again for those familiar with last years layout not much will change. Any tee/Pin that I can change I attempt to do so.
Open Men and Advance divisions will play black, blue, black. The other squad will mirror it and go blue, black, blue.

Walla Walla is hard to get a late spring weekend to ourselves with college graduations, wine stuff, dog shows, Fort Walla Walla Museum events including RC races, plays, pioneer days, rc planes, etc. Oh and of course BMX track events.

Being aware of the costs of playing disc golf in ww that weekend is a reason that I know of two yards willing to put people up and at least one yard has floor space/couch space indoors.

Thank you for the interest :)

Just some general information that may or may not be useful.

We are electing to offer a rec division at this years ASC. We are also going to have Rec classes and Jr classes playing from alternate tees. I want the tournament to be a fun experience and in truth having a JR or a true Rec player tossing a hole not designed for them is both not fun and a potential frustration.
Not every hole will be adjusted and I also hope this helps flow of groups throughout the course.

Secondly, I want more women playing dang it. Last year we had 12 awesome ladies play (less than 10% of the field). What do I or we as a club need to do to make it more inviting/enticing for all you great lady golfers from Tri Cities, Spokane, Seattle, and Portland areas to come and play?

Lastly, this is for the open players, FWWDGC will pay out via check for obvious safety reasons for both me the TD and you the player. I don't want to hold on to that much cash.

personal, handwritten invitations on linen stationery and pay for a hotel room with a hot tub for each of us...

;)

seriously, kris... putting the word out like this is a really good start... just let the ladies know that you're looking for them.

also, if you, or someone involved in your club is on facebook, go and like the PDGA Women's Committee page and then you can post something on our wall about your event... girls looooove facebook so that is a really great way to reach a large audience of women (honestly, i think there's like 2 gals who read this forum regularly and a handful more who look at it every now and again).

also... you could go ahead and save a certain number of spots just for women until 2 weeks before the event when you then open those spots up to the boys... and then you can advertise that you are running a "women friendly" event, which is how Shavonne does it for the Hope Open

Kris,

You run a great tournament. That's number one. So you are already ahead of the curve.

Here are a few of my suggestions for specifically attracting women:

If you are doing shirts, provide shirts that are made for women and get 'realistic' sizes.
Make sure you get some 150 class plastic and set it aside for the women's player's packs or for the Pro women to purchase.
Be mindful when you are assigning holes...some of your women's groups will play slower and it's really tough to try to finish strong when other groups are heading in crossing into their fairways.
Don't assume your pro women and am women want to be grouped together if you run into grouping challenges.
Don't assume your pro women don't want to play in the Pro pool on the tougher courses.
Remember most women who travel and compete take this just as seriously as the men who travel and compete.

Please note I'm not claiming to speak for any women besides myself, These are my suggestions based on my opinions and observations from my experiences in tournament play.

If they are helpful to you, great. If not, it's still really nice that you asked :-)

Looking forward to seeing you!!

Thanks,
Lesli

Are any other ladies interested in joining me in an pro age protected division? I don't want to be a wuss...but I'm coming off knee surgery and it hasn't escaped me that all these adorable youngsters who will be playing in the Pro Women's division have been burning it up on the courses due to the mild winter...

Karen, Cindy, Nancy, Jaymie, Kim, Randi....want my money? :-)

I have cleared it with my wife to open up my house, parking spots (rv's), and yard for you players in attempts to alleviate the burden of lodging. All we ask is that you keep the smoke outside (aka my kids unaware), clean up after yourself, and please don't moon the neighbors.

I have also found a local player with a backyard that can house a few tents.

Either case we ask that you contact me and we can go from there if you want to take us up on this offer.

Last year I don't remember how many were at my house and it all seemed to go smooth with no complaints from the neighbors. I anticipate the same results for this year.

I would love to come play the Sushi again, but I am just not sure I can make it work this year. I have plans to go to Worlds in July, so I need to cut back on some of my other traveling. I will probably just keep to local tournaments this year.

kris, you run a great tournament and it has a vibe that encourages women to play, so i second what lesli said about being ahead of the curve... game... etc. reading lesli's post, she made some excellent points... especially regarding the mixing of the divisions and... speaking for myself... putting the pro women in the same flight as the pro men. that is how i would prefer to roll and i do understand why TD's will sometimes put us in the opposite flight (speed of play, etc.) but that doesn't mean i have to like it. also, i've spent some time discussing the placement of the women's cards to support flow and speed of play at tournaments with jeff hagerty and he's very thoughtful about how he does this and i recommend following his example.

@lesli... i did not say "personal massages" i said hot tubs and "personal invitations on linen stationery"... massages freak me out. ;) hope you recover well from your knee stuff...

What exactly does Jeff do to help promote the flow and speed of play? I usually try to give a buffer (when I can) and start at holes I feel will get everyone off to a non waiting start.
As for the Open women playing on the same flight as the men, I will make all efforts to make this happen. That was my goal for last year and for 2012 if I have to decide which open division to move off the open flight I will choose a Male division (MPG perhaps).
As to smaller divisions and deciding to have them play with other women or play with men of a similar division, I attempt to talk to the players involved. I do believe this is what I did last year...I asked (think it was you) if you would prefer to play with the ladies or a mens group (int i think).

As with the rest of the world if you see something going on and you wish to voice a concern or request please talk to me for perhaps I was unaware or at least I can give my reasoning for what action was taken.

May 5th is going to be here before I know it....time to go to preschool with my son.

i think you're on the right track with the flow... you'd have to talk to jeff to get all the details... but i know that he thinks about the length of different holes and which groups are following which... my personal recommendation is to never, ever have ladies ghosting.

and our conversation about which group i'd prefer to play with was based solely on if any other pro ladies signed up and if they didn't if i'd be a division of one or play int. men... both ideas you completely supported and put the disc in my fairway to make my own decision on that. which is more than some TD's would do (or so i've heard) and it really impressed me and made me happy.

thanks for taking us into consideration, too, with the flights. one thing i realize is that i do not always understand the innerworkings and all the details that go into a tournament and that it's just the way the cookie crumbles that someone is not going to be 100% pleased with the way the course was layed out, their card they were put on, how long lunch was, pay out, weather, blah blah blah blah... but the important thing is that TD's be willing to have positive dialogue with players explaining why they do things... and absolutely vice versa. if a player has a complaint or a concern or a suggestion it should be voiced in a positive, reasonable way. so, as far as which flight the women play with... it may not make sense to put them with the open men if it means moving the masters... speed of play (and flow) is waaaaay more important i think than what flight you get to play with. i hope this helps and doesn't just confuse.

ASC has a past of filling...or well near filling (sometimes we cap things below on purpose). I have not added some local players and some TriCitians who will sign up/pay later.
In my perfect world people would sign up sooner rather than later for it helps with trophies and overall my nerves. :) We are ahead of where we were last year at this time :)

I've been to a number of these; always a great time. Field will be full or near full, course will be huge, great TD, club, staff, sponsors, fun place to visit, fair payouts, good player packs, and usually much much more.

You have selected a good tournament, at least based on its past; you won't be disappointed. Some of your your questions might best be answered in person; I suggest hitting up your local leagues, glows, work parties, etc. Networking in person with the player base will help you find out everything you want to know and more about the region's wide variety of DG tourneys.

And the capacity is 144 but I will cut it off between 130 and 140 depending on how the groups/flights look. I have about 18 spots I am holding for women and Juniors.

Of course Tri Cities has yet to sign up in force and they typically do so when I hound them at the Windy or at this weekends Doubles event.

It looks like some of us from Whidbey will be making the trek over. :cheerleader:

A HUGE thanks to Kris and the Walla Walla club for making us feel welcome!

Also I have been allowed to announce that I WILL be doing on site disc dye jobs. Kris will have a variety of plastic for sale. I will also have a limited amount of Innova and DGA plastic for dyeing.

I can manage to do about 20 discs on site over the weekend, but if you arrange for the disc ahead of time, I can have it made and ready for you.

A sample of designs can be seen at www.DiscAddiction.com if there's a design you would like to request that you don't see, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Disc Addiction will also be donating some items for the raffle.

This should be a fantastic event and I can't wait!!

Okay 3fingers asked me to post a pic of the shirt and the fundraiser discs for 2012...I was in a hurry and will try to get better pics up today....

As of right now the big items in players packs for AMS look like:
Shirt, towel, bag tag, weighted custom stamped mini, and one asc 2012 stamped pro disc (rpro roc, destroyer, katana, or boss) all of which will be packed into a reusable 'planet savvy' tote from Paragon Disc Golf.

Pro Pack is the same as the AMS but NO disc.

The fundraiser discs for 2012
Glow Champ Sidewinder
Glow Champ Boss
Metal Flake Destroyers (only 7 left I think)
Glow DX Aviars

The champ plastics are $20 each or 3 for $50
The Glow DX aviars are $12 each or 3 for $30

Proceeds go to payout across ALL divisions.

Camping options are still possible but you need to prearrange by pming/calling me so the two of us who are opening up our yards/houses can keep tabs on it.

My goal is to be done with raffle, final nine skins, payout, etc by 2:30 which is doable since the round starts at 9:00. However, nothing ever goes as I plan it in my perfect little world and the final nine skins can be a time sink.

right on, that seems reasonable...do you plan on doing the raffle before the payout...only asking because I'm typically not in the payout and with such a long drive I may need to leave early...

Who is the final 9 for? Is that just the open players?
Are we playing in pools for the event?

Who is the final 9 for? Is that just the open players?
Are we playing in pools for the event?

The last few years we have been doing an alternate shot doubles format.
We take the top four finishing pros and then raffle them off as partners to any AM participant (this may change to allow any non MPO). They then play a skins format for cash which is split 50/50 unless the partners select a different method.

We have ALL MPO's drive on the Odd holes and the drawn partners drive on the EVEN holes regardless of the previous holes outcome. Likewise once the hole is pushed/won we pick up and move to the next hole to help speed of play.

Typically the club puts up the first $100 and then 100% of the skins raffle ($5/ticket) and all non-drawn tickets are put into the item raffle box.

Last year the per hole skins was mid $80ish.

The best thing about this format has been every single time the team you did not expect to take the skins seems to find a way to take at least 1/2 :)

You will play two rounds of 18 on Saturday and one round of 18 on Sunday and 8 lucky ones will play 9 holes of alternate shot double skins.

I will attempt to post some more information later this evening in regards to distances etc. I just need to put the information into pdfs and post them. Oh and hope that they are small enough to attach.

Oh I have been told that random doubles is planned for 5ish (remember this is Tony time) on Friday the 4th.
Everyone will meet on blue 1 but I am not sure if you will play the black or the blue course.

Please also remember that check in will start no later than Saturday at 8 (if it is not running by 730 something went wrong). Speaking of check in...make sure that you park on the side of the park with the Museum (city request) which is the closest parking lot to tournament central anyway.
To those not familiar tournament central is a covered picnic area on the north side of the park (those with the course map it is between holes 16 and 17 of the hybrid blue course.

FOOD VENDOR: the BMX Club that we share the park with provides the food vending (hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and gravy, muffins, soda, gatorade, etc) ALL proceeds that they make off of us goes straight back to funding their major bike event. Last year the prices were great and the food was good.

Custom Disc Dying: Disc Addiction will be on site and will be taking orders for custom work while you play your round (up to ten a day). I have seen their work and it is awesome.

Raffle: We will have an item raffle. ALL ticket sales on Saturday go to payout across ALL divisions. $1 per ticket

Skins Raffle: Proceeds from this raffle go straight to the skins pot and all non drawn tickets will be added to the item raffle bucket. $5 per ticket

Tournament Plastic: We will have Glow Champ Bosses and Sidewinders, glow dx aviars, and may have 3-4 metal flake destroyers. ALL proceeds from these sales goes straight to payout across ALL divisions.

What does across ALL divisions mean? Well I know that the pros like money....and we in Walla Walla strive to make out payouts the best possible. However, I love my other divisions as well...and I want their payouts to be awesome too.

Happy to hear that everything is working out for people looking for lodging...we do have one house still with some tent space.

Recs will play the hybrid blue, black, hybrid blue. Walking through the course we changed maybe 8-10 holes...Limited to suitable spots for tee pads and the fear that rec and jr could play too fast and be waiting on tees for others to finish. Our hope is that the changes keep the event positive for all divisions without taking all the challenge from the event but keeping the speed of play up as well.

I think I have 140 signed up now...which is my unofficial cut off point...
I will attempt to update the pdga on wednesday...out of town but will figure a way Wednesday.

I may be able to give one Puget Sound person a one-way ride to Walla Walla tomorrow (Friday) morning. I am picking my son up at Pullman on Sunday after the tourney, so that's why it's a one way ride.

I am leaving Lake Stevens around 7:30 am. You would be on your own for lodging, rides, a way home, etc after we reach the course on Friday.

PM if you're interested. It's a Toyota Tacoma, so there is only room for one.

Also, I apologize....my vehicle is unable to play country music.

Random flip Dub's = Part of tourney fun ..out of towners who come into town early and get together with the locals . It's usually 5 $ per person and a chance to WIN some extra $$$$$..

Oh I have been told that random doubles is planned for 5ish (remember this is Tony time) on Friday the 4th.
Everyone will meet on blue 1 but I am not sure if you will play the black or the blue course.

PLAYERS PARTY at Aloha Sushi starting 630ish on Saturday. The owner closes down shop just for us and it is always a blast. The food is top notch and he has menu items for the non sea food lovers as well.

Thanks to the DRO for submitting it's paperwork we will actually be generating points and standings

Thank you to all those that donated for the raffle, helped with the course, sponsored a tee sign, and most importantly THANK YOU PLAYERS...remember without you, I would have tournaments to run.
You are the ones that make it awesome, I just set up a framework.

I should have the PDGA updated (tonight) and results submitted this week for both the series and PDGA.

So those that were not here...our final 9 skins ended up being $130 per flippin hole....yes that is 130 dollars per hole. I am not sure how next years ASC will top that.....but those that know me...know I will find a way.

Once again Brian Cook showed that he can play disc golf :)

I like to think that I set the bar for ASC high and that once again myself and the rest of the club not only met but exceeded everyone's expectations.

Thanks again all you players....and wasn't that a fun raffle :)

Its hard for me to believe that someone is "something special" in a sport, when they aren't playing against the best competition available. He shot great, and obviously is a good golfer, but to be "something special" in my mind, he needs to be throwing with Brian Cook and Kyle Crabtree. It's obvious from his scores that if he plays up to his abilities, he can compete, but at this point, he isn't competing against the best, so I think it is too early to say he is "something special"

Another super awesome Aloha. I continue to make this one of my must attend tourney's of the year. Great payout as always, good times at Aloha Sushi Saturday evening, and smooth operation throughout the weekend.

My only critique is the tournament staff got the payouts done and over with a bit earlier last year. This year wasn't late by any standard, just not as early as last year. Us travelers really appreciate being able to get out as early as possible.

Where do I start?!?!

This was our first time making it out for ASC and I was completely WOWED! Kris (and the club at Walla-Walla) put on a CLASS ACT tournament. Efficient, timely, and down right smoothly ran. We really felt welcomed so far from home!!

I think a lot of TD's should take note of how ASC tried hard to wrap things up VERY early Sunday, so those of us from far (or really far) away could get on the road and back home ASAP. With us making a 7 hour drive home I was THRILLED not to leaving the course at 6+pm!!

The payouts were top-notch, the raffle was freaking huge and did you SEE THAT SKINS $ amount!!

I can't close my "thoughts" on this tournament without pointing out and under noticed thing Kris managed at this event... he had FIVE juniors playing, in 2 different age groups (under 13 and 13 & over) and it was handled perfectly! So often TD's shy away from the juniors because they are afraid they may "slow down play" but I didn't hear 1 thing from any players about the juniors taking anything away from their experience! Here's to the Walla Walla club for making the youngest of players WELCOME at a tournament!! I hope this trend will spread across the state.

this could be true in another sport, but not this sport. the reason is that in this sport we are not competing against other people, we are competing against the course. everybody is trying to beat the course, we are not competing against others because our performance does not have a imideate and direct effect on other peoples play (at least it shouldnt).

we are playing the same course and trying to beat the par of the course.

THANKS SHAWN!

I was happy to make and donate some discs for the raffle.

I believe I managed to get 27 discs dyed for those players that requested them early enough on Saturday. I had hoped to take "orders" for players on Sunday, but it took all Sunday to finish the requests from Saturday.

I appreciate everyones kind words and interest in the custom designs. I hope everyone enjoyed getting their discs "customized"!!

I agree competing with the course, but completely disagree that our performance doesn't effect others... Ask Brian Cook how he felt when Kyle Crabtree hit an 80+ ft birdie putt on 17 to tie it up with one to play... I will tell you what he said "it made my knees knock standing over my 25 ft birdie"... He missed (birdied 18 to win), but if you say that Kyle slamming that HUGE birdie on 17 didn't have an effect on Brian, you are dead wrong.

Be a congratulator and not a hater...your game gets better that way...And not to put Jason Carr on the spot, but when I'm challenged about my opinion I'll get on the offensive and say that you obviously have not played on a card with this man...he knows the game, he's respectful, humble, helpful, encouraging, inspirational, athletic...everything this sport needs in an amateur and eventually (soon) Pro level...that's pretty Special in my book, and I'm no slouch to the game and my performances...I travel the country playing Disc Golf and Jason Carr is amongst the best I've ever met.

It is great to hear that we have one of the best here in the Pacific NW... I am not a hater, and I am sure that Jason is a great guy, and he is obviously an excellent golfer. I can't wait to see how he stacks up against the best in the NW (B. Cook and Crabtree, IMO), and hopefully soon we will see how he stacks up nationally!!

The ratings that you see on the PDGA site during, or just after an event, are "unofficial" until the TD report has been completed and turned in. Even the most organized and thoughtful TDs are wise to take a couple of days to make sure all the info in the report is accurate before submitting it. Once the report has been processed by the PDGA the "official" results are posted with final ratings info, etc.

Kris is a very conscientious TD so you should expect to see your ratings for the ASC in the next update.

Cheers, EE

I had a BLAST playing the Aloha again!! Thanks again to Kris and his awesome family for doing so much for us golfers. Those dinners they throw down sure make it hard to leave! $130 skins match was fun to play in. Congrats to Brian for getting Stimpi on his team! They sure made for a brutal team to beat. I think Stimpi hit 4 25-30 footers like they were nothing. Pretty dang good for an am :wink2: I threw a drive to 18 feet with 3 skins on the line and an am pumped in a 45 footer to steal the 3 skins I thought we had:angry: :nono: :biggrin2: The drama was fun! Great coming back from the 3rd card to get in the show! I've noticed that my name isn't spelled right on the PDGA page so whenever you get the chance my buddy. It's Jeremy Thornton 20504.
