2012 Beaver State Fling presented by Keen Footwear
A PDGA National Tour Elite Series event
Stumptown Disc Golf is once again partnering with KEEN Footwear and Next Adventure to bring you the 2012 Beaver State Fling on the weekend of June 15th - 17th. This PDGA National Tour Elite Series event will once again take place at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Oregon, where two spectacular 18 hole courses line the banks of the Clackamas River. The Beaver State Fling (www.beaverstatefling.com) has a tradition of excellence that continues to draw the best disc golfers in the world back to the grandeur of the Pacific Northwest year after year. Tournament directors Jeff Mittl and Jeff Hagerty have joined forces again to ensure that tradition continues.
In addition to the NT and the A-Tier there will also be plenty of side events to entertain the masses before, during and after the rounds, including our epic mini disc golf course. As with years past, we will again be using both the East and West courses which are played as pro par sixty with lengths in excess of 8000 feet. Camping will also be offered again on site this year with more space for RV’s and tent campers, including a space for Thursday camping arrivals. Reservations for the parks designated campground can be made at www.reserveamerica.com.
We will be offering 160 Professional spots this year for the NT and 144 Amateur spots for the A-Tier event. As always, we are hoping more ladies will make the trip this year to compete for the crown and help round out the field of competitors. The professional divisions will be playing 2 rounds again on Friday, competing for the mid-day tee times on Saturday. Their final round will be held on Sunday to wrap up the weekend of competition. The Amateur Divisions will be playing two rounds on Saturday with tee times. The first round will be in the morning and the second round will be in the later part of the afternoon. The third and final round will be with tee times on Sunday morning.
Professional Registration:
Due to the overwhelming demand for this event and our own desire to attract the very best players this sport has to offer we will once again be instituting tiered, ratings-based registration for the NT side of the event.
Here is how tiered, ratings-based registration will work:
Phase 1: 03/19/2012 @ 6:00pm PST - Registration opens for all 1000+ rated MPO players, plus all FPO women.
Phase 2: 04/02/2012 @ 6:00pm PST - Registration opens for all 970+ rated professional players, regardless of division, plus all age-based professional divisions.
Phase 3: 04/16/2012 @ 6:00pm PST - Registration opens for all remaining professional players.
Important Notes:
Do not ignore your registration window. This event will fill.
We will have division size caps in place to ensure non-mpo divisions remain viable.
Anyone attempting to register before their tier is open will have their registration rejected.
We will be holding a limited number of slots for 2012 National Tour Champions and returning 2011 Beaver State Fling MPO & FPO Champions.
We require at least 4 players to create a division.
Professional Division Sizes:
(Note: these may change slightly based on registration trends. For example: If we receive more than 20 FPO registrations in the first phase of registration we will accept those entries.)
Division - Initial # of Slots
MPO - 80
FPO - 20
MPM - 32
This leaves 28 slots available for "other" professional divisions provided they meet the four players per division requirement.
Amateur Registration:
Registration for the amateur side of this event has proven to be quite the undertaking in the past. Historically, the event has filled so quickly that registration felt more like a case of who has the best internet connection, or who can race home to get registered in time. In an attempt to make this as fair as possible for everyone, and with the support of our primary sponsors, we have obtained permission from the PDGA to institute a lottery system for amateur registration.
We will open pre-registration AT 6:00PM on 03/26/2012 and it will remain open until 4/8/2012. During that time period anyone who would like to play in the event can pre-register at no cost. At the end of the pre-registration window we will sort all prospective players by division and begin randomly pulling names. We will then send an email to those people containing an email link where they can formally register for the event. Players who are selected will have 2 weeks to register for the event, after which time their slot is forfeited and it goes back in to the pool.
Once the event has filled, all remaining names from the initial two week pre-registration window will be randomly sorted and placed on the waiting list. If a slot opens we will pull names from the waiting list in order.
Important Notes:
We will have division size caps in place to ensure non-MA1 divisions remain viable.
We require at least 4 players to create a division.
Amateur Division Sizes:
(Note: these may change slightly based on registration trends. For example: If we receive more than 16 FA1 registrations we will accept those entries.)
Division - Initial # of Slots
MA1 - 72
FA1 - 16
MM1 - 32
This leaves 24 slots available for "other" amateur divisions provided the division meets the four players per division requirement.
We understand some people may not approve of this plan, but after much deliberation we decided this method of registration was as fair as we could possibly make it. We are also confident it will alleviate the server-load issues we have had in the past during registration. We hope people understand the dilemma we face when putting on an event with far greater demand than available spots.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us through the Beaver State Fling website.

Thank you very much for mentioning this. There is no way we could pull off an event like this without all of our awesome volunteers. I've always been particularly impressed when I see the same people volunteering year after year. You guys rock!

Volunteering was great last year, and all staff and players were very respectful.
But, I'd rather play this year! Getting my shamrocks ready..

OK, so I know it's a bit early.....
Any idea as to when the course will be set in it's tourney layout?
Just trying to decide when to head over for a few days of practice before the event. I have 2 weeks off from Memorial day thru June 10th and am going to camp at the campground for 5 days or so and get some rounds in.. :yay:

The lottery seems really fair to me, especially since I was a lucky winner last year and got to play my first BSF. What a great experience, and if I don't hit the jackpot this year, I'm hoping to make it down to spectate and volunteer if time allows.
Fundraising idea> for $5, each AM could have the option to get their name in the hat twice. (kind of like the Golden Ticket I guess)

this is not an official BSF response.
"pre-reg" for Ams LOTTERY opens tomm. till the 8th of April. so any time between will get you a lottery slot no guarantees of entry to the BSF.

So the information on the website cited above for am registration doesn't seem quite right..maybe someone can clarify if this is what it should be or someone can fix it: It says they will notify on April the 15th, a Friday. Friday is the 13th. It also says it's for the 2011 BSF.
I'm mainly posting this as a note for those who put up the site so they can fix it, that's all. Just an FYI, don't mean to be picky.

Just to add to and confuse/clarify all the lottery chatter.
From your description of divisional spots held for AMs....
If the lottery closed today would the MG1 division get 21 of the 24 "other" reserved spots and the FM1 and MS1 entries be absorbed into the lottery of one of the 4 available divisions?
Know what I mean?
Is everyone getting older?

Wes,
I will have a much better idea what divisions will remain once the lottery registration closes, but I will definitely be filling cards within each division in groups of 4.
I will start with the smallest divisions first. Any players who registered for a division that does not meet the 4 person requirement will be automagically dropped down to the next division that is appropriate for them before we draw the names for that particular division.
To answer your other question. MG1 is not automatically getting 21 spots. I will balance the divisions as fairly as I possibly can based on overall demand.

No worries but just so you know I bet Jeff will allow as many as possible FW1's that sign up. Just my own observations. You know there are going to be 72 MA1's so the math breaks down to 5 divisions for 72 slots.

You're not fooling ANYONE. :bricks:
To make this perfectly clear... again, NO ONE will have their name in this lottery more than one time. In fact, the more times you submit your name the more WORK you make for me, which makes it much more likely that I might "accidentally" delete ALL of your entries leaving you no chance whatsoever of playing.
Now wouldn't THAT be sad. :rolleyes2:

Sorry to burst your bubble Sam, this years AM Champs at Bowling Green had a field of 74 MM1 players...70 finished the tourney...Find yourself about 25 more AM crusties to register, lobby for all to get in and personally make sure they all finish the tourney and then you may have a record! There were also 48 in the GM1 division and ALL of them finished!! :wink2:

I actually think the opposite would be more fair. Give priority to those who weren't lucky enough to get in last year. Kinda hard to finish in the top 10 if you couldn't even get in the event in the first place.
As the excellent tradition of the BSF continues, why not give all players who sign up for the lottery one submission into the pool of names and then give players who've attempted to get in in the past, but weren't drawn, one additional name submission into the pool for each year they didn't make it in. (In this scenario, players who turned down their invite into the event would not qualify for the extra name submission(s).)
We could also do a similar thing for people who volunteered in past BSFs.

We've been talking about this possibility of double-weighting those who missed out the previous year for a while now, but since we hadn't announced it ahead of time, we didn't think it would be appropriate to institute it this year.
In any case, this year is set in stone and everyone who threw their name into the hat will have an equal chance... just like last year.
Its a work in progress for sure. Rest assured, we are trying to do this as fairly as possible. If its any consolation, I know a couple of people who would LOVE to play the BSF, but will have no chance of doing that in the foreseeable future... Jeff Mittl and I :)

The problem is with the PDGA. I can't blame or shame anyone for playing within the rules. What we need to do is get the rules changed. It's funny that the PDGA even list guidelines for play. Just change the rules.
As for a-tier and above events. Ratings should be used for all divisions for registration. We are trying to get the best pro's involved. Why not get the best of all divisions.

Here is an example of a 970+ rated am registering as a pro, but not accepting cash. It is my understanding that is doesn't matter what your rating is, 1010 or 899, that you can play any division (barring an age/sex protected) that you want, as long as you don't accept cash. You can decline the cash flat out, or accept script instead. Paging Chuck Kennedy...

Each and every year it gets harder and harder to get through this process. No matter what we do, someone we care about is going to get burned. I know in year's past the BSF camping was for Friday and Saturday, but if we could camp in the designated areas on Thursday, that'd be sweet and well worth extra $$$$.
Last year I spent Thursday night in the official campground (which was great and well worth it), but tearing down and relocating on Friday morning was a bit of a challenge (although not as much of a challenge as the approach on 1W!).

I know the Jeffs are busy, Does anyone know about camping at Milo? I understand that you just camp on the grass, along the parking lots and pretty much anywhere you can other than the course itself. Is that kind of just show up and find a spot type deal? What goes on, somebody who camped last year at the course can you possibly fill me in? I saw the above post but i was curious if we do camp on the course part how it all works?
thank you

Unofficial post:
In years past most recently, the camping has been:
RVs in parking lots D an E, along the southernmost curb.
Tents in grass next to in parking lots D an E, along the southernmost curb.
Tents at designated areas just south of parking lot D, near shelter D# ?
E lot is designated as the "quiet" camp.
It is definitely not: "pretty much anywhere you can other than the course itself". That would include hundreds of acres on which camping is not allowed.
The camping is cool, it's in an area normally open only for day use, but the bathrooms and shelters remain open just for us.
There is usually a designated Camping Director, and they will instruct us on the camping requirements.

This is mostly true!
If you want to stay in the campground please use the link in Scott's previous post.
As far as camping in the designated areas around the course with your day/year parking pass, I will have to get back to you on that. As of Friday of last week head park ranger, Clay, accepted a state park job in eastern Oregon. There has been no replacement as of yet. He was great to work with and will be missed.
Camping details to come...
Thanks,
Jeff

I am part of the large group whose lives would become much easier if we could camp Thursday night. If there is any way it can be pulled off, we would be forever grateful. If there is no chance, well, let us know, and we'll plan around it, but if there is any chance, please let me know what I can do to help facilitate that possibility!
PS: Second in importance, but also wonderful, would be if we could camp on Sunday as well...

Guys,
I thought Mittl was pretty clear here, but here it is again.
Beaver State Fling camping is for Friday and Saturday nights ONLY.
You are more than welcome to camp in the Milo McIver campground on other nights if you would like to, but not in the tournament area.
That is all we can guarantee right now.
With the most helpful park manager we have ever had having recently left Milo, and with no replacement hired as of yet, our ability to negotiate anything is dramatically reduced. If that changes, trust that we will let you know.

In doing a little research on the BSF site I see that hole 8W (485 foot island par three) has the following note:
"Drop Zone for missed island landing, must come to rest on island to be inbounds"
That's a new twist and should make for some pretty dramatic upshots on a hole that never seemed to lack drama.

450'+ to carry and all the way to 425' for layups, also i'm not sure if they are putting up the hay bales to keep discs from being able to slide up on to the green?

And due to the route that needs to be taken, it is a long and challenging 485 to the pin fraught with dangers most mortals don't attempt especially when keeping score.

Hey Campers (and everyone else) -
I got tired of needing a "sit-down" bathroom break at the BSF and finding all the toilet paper gone in the bathrooms around TC and the day use area so I decided to do something about it! Is there anything worse than realizing you better go drown a burrito before your tee time if you want to play well and finding no paper in the whole bathroom?!? Well of course there is, but that's not my point. This happened to me the last two years at the BSF. I think the Park staff just can't keep up with the heavy use in these bathrooms during the weekend.
So this year I am bringing toilet paper. A LOT of toilet paper. I'll be stocking the bathrooms on Wednesday, and checking and re-stocking them again Fri. - Sun. Please don't take the extra rolls for personal use or firestarters. So think of me when you are...actually, scratch that, I mean....um...uh...enjoy the 2012 BSF!

For me the most important part of practicing a hole is figuring out what to do off the tee and how to approach the area around the basket.

Posting the tee times too far ahead of time is a no-win situation for us. If someone drops and we have to change something, and someone misses their tee time because they didn't look again... then we would be blamed for posting incorrect information.
If you plan on a 5:00am tee time you will only be pleasantly surprised.

11W - Deep Left by the creek (which is probably dry right now). Probably not dry after that rain we got today! It was flooding here in Beaverton, water over the curbs it came down so fast.
Both of these placements are new for the Fling but 11W has been used for other events before. This should make the west play a little more fair or harder depending on how you look at things.

very cool! Now I have something to give to my entourage for the weekend. ie- mom and dad. :)
You should also get them a commemortive disc so they can get autographs. And a hat! And a tee shirt! :)

I'm going to keep it reasonable.
$5 per player.

quick question, how bad is the poison oak / ivy out there right now and is it marked? I seem to remember it being marked in the past but i may be thinking of someplace else. I realize there is none growing in the fairways where your discs are supposed to land but occasionally a disc may get away from me and head for the schule. Thanks in advance...

Not much poison oak at all to be honest, but Ryan Gwillim will be heading out there to paint any that he can find. He's done it over the last few years so he knows right where to look.

thanks for the info, i normally wouldnt be too concerned with it but got a really bad case of it a few months back which has now caused me to be extremely sensative to it and my poison oak /ivy recognition skills are much like my disc golf skills...seriously lacking...

It looks so UN-harmful . I'm more worried about the tall grass. I played with shorts the other day and my shins are scraped up bad. but the course looks absolutely amazing!

that's why you wear knee socks, matty! duh! (and you thought it was just 'cause i'm soooo fashionable... )
... poison oak also has an "oily" look to it... and towards the end of the season those leaves get a reddish tinge... that's when it's really nasty...
carry baby wipies in your bag and if you throw into a patch, pick the disc up with the wipies, wipie it off before you put it back in your bag and then wipie the heck out of your fingers and hands... and then throw the wipies away in a zippie so they don't contaminate anything else in your bag. altho, i guess if you don't know what the darn stuff looks like anyway, you're just screwed...

Does anyone know when the latest tee time would be for AMs, or anybody for that matter on Saturday? Have some family traveling down to estacada to watch depending on latest time?
Thank you

ATTN: Thursday Campers
We have 10 people who have reserved spots for the Thursday night camping in the Kingfisher site. This leaves approximately 15 spots available as of now. Anyone who has reserved a spot or plans on camping there will need to check in and pay Scott Hill at tournament central on Thursday. I will not be out until early Friday morning due to work conflicts. Anyone who would like to reserve a spot please PM myself or Scott, (Scott) on this forum to get in on this.

I scanned thru the posts but we are up to 13 pages now and I still don't know what I need to know.
Feel free to call me out for being dumb. I can take it.
Sorry, but I'm working six and seven 10's with an hour commute each way so I miss stuff.
I don't know when I must show up or Tee times.
I have to ask for time off. They know it's coming but....
Sorry, but better to ask and feel stupid than miss out.
A little help?
