The Ice Bowl is a series of fundraiser tournaments held around the World that has raised over $2 million dollars for charity in the last 25 years. Ice Bowl is a great way to help others while raising the profile of disc golf in our community! http://icebowlhq.com/

The EDGC Ice Bowl will take place the day before Super Bowl XLVI. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-biggest day for food consumption in America, behind only Thanksgiving. On February 5th, 2012, Americans will eat an estimated 30 million pounds of snacks including 1.25 BILLION chicken wings (yes Billion) and 70 million pounds of avocados in guacamole! On average, each viewer will consume 1,200 calories during the game. So come on out the day before the Super Bowl and burn some calories, have some fun, and raise some money for people in our community who are not as fortunate.

We have a goal of raising at least $500 and 100 lbs of food. This is a non-sanctioned, no-payout tournament geared toward having fun and getting you to spend some cash for a chance at glory and prizes! Please support the first EDGC Ice Bowl and join other disc golfers trying to grow the sport in our community while doing good deeds!

BTW...........I picked up 10 cans of food at Grocery Outlet. 79 cents a can and each can is a meal in a can. For someone in need a can of Ravioli or Spaghetti O's can make a huge difference. YOU can make difference in someones life for less than two bucks.

10 cans = approximately 9 lbs..................91 lbs of food to meet the goal. :yay:

Well, you know how it is.....

So far I have 24 solid rsvps. I think this translates to 50-60 players, and I am hoping for 75 because that's how many players pack discs I ordered.

I think with some Mulligans you are in good shape to not be DFL. Andrew Rich told me he's playing left handed, you can beat that, Bob! Right?

Besides, you're already in the running for "Oldest Bob" and "Farthest traveled" and "Biggest Food Donation" - I think you are going to clean up! :yay:

Tobiah Orin Photography has stepped up with a huge sponsorship - two lucky attendees will be going home with gift certificates for 1 hour photo shoots valued at $100 each! Disc golf action shots, baby picutres, family portraits, whatever you want - Tobiah is an excellent professional photographer as well as a disc golfer. Thank You Tobiah Orin Photography!

Word from Rebecca Duffy is that the PDGA has also sent a box of swag for the EDGC Ice Bowl! What's in it? I don't know but I hope it's cool.

All-American Hot Dog Cart will be set up for lunch with 10% of the proceeds going to Food For Lane County, and Andrew Rich will be serving up his famous WVWS chili with all proceeds going to ARC of Lane County, so you won't have to leave for lunch.

Which is good because I have too much stuff planned for the day, and some of it will have to happen at lunch to get it all in before dark! We will probably begin the 50/50 CTP and Basket Toss contest after Round 1 and finish after Round 2. $2 a throw - half the money raised to FFLC and half to the person who throws CTP. An Ace wins a basket - but not the cash - unless there are no Aces, and then CTP wins both! Multiple Aces will throw off for the basket.

Mulligans for sale, CTPs on every hole of the tournament, and a raffle that currently has prizes worth $400 and they are still coming in!!!!!

NO WIMPS, NO WHINERS!

1st Round: THREE DISCS ONLY.
Carry only three discs, no swapping, no replacements!

2nd Round: You get your bag back!

Mulligans for sale: $1 each, limit 5 per round. Tee-shot only, mulligan throw must be used.

Out of curiosity, what are the rules for the mulligans the first round going to be? i.e. Can you go get your errant throw/disc to re-tee? Or do you need to throw one of your remaining two discs? If not, that'll make using mulligans pretty rough the first round (as I'm guessing most players will be bringing a fairway, a mid, and a putter).. but otherwise it'll possibly slow the pace of play a bit.

It's a great question, and I'll go over this at the player's meeting. When I was thinking up ways to raise more money and have a fun format, I did not think this part through, but I believe it will work out nicely.

Because speed of play is going to be an issue, players will NOT be allowed to retrieve discs that go OB or for mulligans during the three disc round, unless they are out of discs. In other words, if all three of your discs go OB, or if you want to use a third mulligan on a hole, you may then retrieve a disc. When I say you may not retrieve your disc, I mean you may not retrieve it for your next throw and slow down the play. Obviously, you may retrieve your disc as play continues.

Mulligans are for tee-shots only, and must be declared and taken immediately following your throw - so no running down to get your disc and telling someone else to tee-off, either.

This does make mulligans somewhat less tempting during the three disc round, but it also makes them more strategic, because the course is going to be set up as short as possible (some short position collars are broken). So, you may want to save your mulligans for those holes where a mid-range or a putter is a good choice from the tee and can still yield a birdie. Of course, a stroke is a stroke, and if your tee shot is OB or just terrible, you'll probably still be able to salvage a three with good use of a mulligan, even if it means throwing a mid-range.

There's a little room for error here, as it may come up that someone throws OB during play, and could easily retrieve the disc without really slowing things down, but I think for consistency we'll have to have one interpretation. Since this is a fundraiser and more about coming together to have fun, do something positive for the community, and raise the profile of disc golf in our area, I am hoping we all act accordingly and it's not an issue.

By the way, during the three disc round, if you lose a disc you may not replace it. If you lose one, you play with two; if you lose two, you play with one. And I'm really hoping no one loses three. :) It seems unlikely.

Please don't take this personal but, this is close to a whine. :nono:
Again only poking fun.
Have fun!

It was a very good question! Some pre-event close-to-whining may be allowed, but this does not fall into that category. :nono:

Yep, twas a gudt question, actually all three were gudt questions.
I tried to highlight what IMO was close to being a whine. :wink2:
With all this being said, Ice Bowl XXIII would like to donate a 2012 Ice Bowl towel to your event.
FWIW, a towel can make a gudt prize for a whiner winner. :waaah:
Good Luck!

PS... keep a close eye and ear on those pre-event close-to whiners, as some are very, very experienced and actually make a life of it.

You'll need ice all right. Specifically, ice running through your veins when you're left of the basket on hole four and staring at a thirty-foot must make putt with the slope and OB creek right behind the basket.

Ice in veins will also be helpful when tossing across the swamp on three, throwing down the hill on thirteen, throwing through the gap on twelve . . .

I'll need Ice for my tired, OLD body after the day ends. :biggrin2:

Leaving the Beaverton area at 3 this afternoon so I can get to my hotel and rest up for what is going to be an incredible day. Matt, thanks for all the hard work you have been putting into this.

Here we go for the Eugene Disc Golf Club Ice Bowl 2012!

The course is looking and playing sweet! It is set up for some smoking low scores and (hopefully) some fast rounds because we have a lot of fun and side action to get to before it gets dark.

I went to scout the course today and play my own round of three disc since I won't be playing tomorrow. What a fun way to play a round - no big bag, no decisions, just focus and fun. The course is set up pretty short and I shot a 5 down with no bogies, so I expect some crazy low scores from folks with a fist full of mulligans!

Remember - this is Ice Bowl and we are playing to raise money for charity, raise the profile of disc golf in our community, and have fun! No Wimps and No Whiners! Open up your wallet for charity! Get there early - sign ups start at 7:30. Get there early enough and you may even see some Ice (frost)! Temps will be chilly in the morning but balmy and sunny later on.

No payout. Trophies for 1st-3rd in four divisions and plenty of opportunities for glory and prizes. Ace pot, CTPs on every hole of the tournament, 50/50 CTP and Basket Toss contest, prizes for biggest cash donation, biggest food donation, farthest traveled, etc, etc, and a HUGE RAFFLE!

First round is three discs only - you may only carry three! No replacements, no switching! No whining!

Wow, what a day! Thank you to everyone who came out to make the Eugene Disc Golf Club Ice Bowl 2012 a huge success! 109 people came out to have fun, give back to the community and help raise the profile of disc golf in Eugene. We had great weather and a lot of great attitudes as we dealt with the huge turnout and the inexperienced TD. I detected no wimps and no whining!

The final total of money raised was $2028.08! Food For Lane County will be able to provide 6085 meals with our donation!

I haven't had a chance to weigh the canned food we collected for the Ice Bowl yet, but it filled up about a third of a full size pickup bed. Oh, and no big deal, but earlier in the week Andrew Rich and Tobiah Orin Mosier dropped off over 1400 pounds of food for the cause at Food For Lane County! Holy Crap! :yay: THANK YOU ANDREW AND TOBIAH! I suspect our total for the food drive will be at least 1600 pounds.

I will post again with more results and the winners of the Ice Bowl trophies and prize categories. For now I'll just say that a certain mature gentleman named Bob cleaned up at the raffle, taking home TWO new Innova disc golf bags!

Special thanks to my two full-time volunteers for the day, Rebecca Duffy and Jesse Everett! Jesse even declined to play once he saw how much help we were going to need and instead spent the day spotting on hole 5 when he wasn't checking scores, writing scorecards, and updating the leader board along with Rebecca. Rebecca didn't play and was punished by having to more or less hang out with me all day.

Thanks also to Jesse Grasseth, Cloud Pemble, Rex Snellstrom, Tom Chrestman, Jim Johnson, Andrew Rich, Tobiah Orin Moshier, Don Richter, Bob Cabal, Jason Turner, Mark Scheid, Mike Higgins, Skipper Hamilton and anyone I may have forgotten for all the help when I needed it throughout the day. There's just no way we could have done it without all the help and next year we'll be better organized and prepared for hopefully another big day.

Last but not least thanks again to all of our generous sponsors:

What a great day day of disc golf, Matt is the MAN. The turn out was off the hook and you, Matt, handled it all very well. That OLD guy scoring big in the raffle just happened to be me ladies and gentleman. Yep, brought home not one but two brand new Innova bags AND a pair of shoulder straps.

I may have played two of my best competitive rounds of disc golf to date and had a blast doing it.

Still tired but had to jump on here and say a big THANK YOU for a fantastic day.

Here are the results, and I'll start with an apology for the hard to read format, as well as for probably having the order wrong in the divisions with ties at the top. We did play-off the ties, and they did get proper recognition and trophies at the event, but I lost the leader cards with the results and cannot remember who won the ties for 1st-3rd in Copper and Silver.

I'll do better next time!
