Any of you Oregon folk plan to attend The Memorial in 2012?
I'm gonna try to go, and it would be great to see some of you there!
I went last year, and had a great time. So nice to get away during the winter (especially since I'm living in MN now!)

Registration will begin on 12/5/11.

Fountain hills Vacation home <fountainhillsvacationhome@yahoo.com>

480-837-4515

Their college son lives next door and is a nice guy.

Last year we had 2 people per room for the 3 small bedrooms and 4 in the really big master bedroom, we had 3 air matresses in there with the queen bed and still had plenty of room and then 3 others slept on the couches and on the floor in the living room... ofc we didnt tell them we had that many people but it was all good...

Jay harbour would probably want a room there too since it so cheap... so anyone who gets the house, ask Jay if he still wants in... Last year's price was
$800.00 Rent - Tuesday night to Monday
$120.00 non refundable cleaning fee
$500.00 refundable security deposit

$1420.00 total

We accept Check, cashier check, credit card. I got the refund in person before I left, it was a check I wrote that was never cashed, so easy there...
Address of the house is.

These courses are awesome! The weather the last 3 years have been awesome! Fountain Hills is a toughie for those who dont have wind and distance experience with water. VDC is not so bad with water, but OB can be tricky. Worth the experience, the new change in schedule is better for spectators too.

I may have to back out :( Found out I have an all day face to face meeting on Tuesday in Minnesota. So... only way I could go would be ~7pm flight to AZ Tuesday in time to play on Wed. Doesn't exactly match my initial plan of getting 2 days to practice before the Wed round.

Looking at possibly playing a different event (BSF.. if it's not too hard to get into.. riiiight, or perhaps Dynamic Discs Glass Blown Open)

Pretty bummed I may have to drop out :(

One Lake Stevens fairway might have as many trees as all of Vista or Fountain hills, but lots and lots of water and ob to play with.

Yep, not much in the way of woods in southern AZ, both Shelley Sharpe and Fountain Hills are very park like, grassy and flat with very little elevation change, big arms will rule these courses, especially with the pins in the longs.

Lotsa water on both courses, they don't encourage rollers down there.
Bring some disposable discs, you can't go after anything in the pond at Fountain Hills, if it goes in deep, its gone.

Wind is a huge factor at these courses. The wind can get up to 30-35 mph at the fountain and that is just brutal. If you have an accurate 325+ drive with plenty of 15-30 mph wind experience, then you can compete in amatuers. You need a 375+ arm to have a chance with the Pros. Accuracy and confidence in your discs is mandatory at both courses. Nerves gets to a lot of golfers out there. Dont throw your precious discs unless there is no water around haha... But both courses are fun... You keep wanting to go back to that one hole or two... The fountain has probably the hardest opening hole for a tournament.

Going to be in Scottsdale, AZ for a sales meeting Feb 9th - 12th. I plan on playing one of these courses when I am there. Played Vista Del Camino last year this time, it was a lot of fun. High and low baskets created challenging putts, water was a factor on many shots, burnt grass was great for skip shots. I had packed disks I do not normally use in order to play without fear, but I shot like crap because I was not confident in flight. I will bring disposable versions of my favorites this time to to go over the water, and assure expected flight (Trojan philosophy). I may have time over the course of these three days if you guys need me to scout something out B4 you get there on the course or nearby. Let me know and I will see if I can be useful to you while I am in Scottsdale.

I have a pretty dang nice house rented for The Memorial in Fountain Hills about 4 minutes from Fountain Park. It's $250 per person for the week and I get house keys on 2/26 around 1pm and give keys back on 3/4 at 12pm. There are 7 people committed so far and I have room for 3-5 more. The house environment will be a fairly mellow one since the house is on a golf course. We are still working out whether or not we want to do communal food or everyone for themeselves. You can see the house and amenities at www.vrbo.com/389008. PM me if you're interested.

This thread got pretty quiet with less than a week to go.

All I know is that based on the current schedule, I'll be in the 7:30 AM threesome that'll lead off the tourney at VDC. Nothing but glorious open fairways stretching out as far as the eye can see.

My only goal for th first day is to NOT be in the threesome that leads off at Fountain at 7:30 on Thursday!

First time two 1100+ in the same round and also same card. Dave's 1115 (maybe 1114 official) will be third best of all time for any SSA course just behind Climo and Skinner tied at 1117. These top three rounds are each in different course SSA categories with Climo in the under 48 SSA range, Skinner in the 48-54 and Feldberg in the 54-60 range. Barry has the only 1100 on the nose in the 60-66 SSA range and no one has come close yet in the SSA 66+ range with Anthon on top at "only" 1088.

Chuck,

The SSA seems reasonable given the recent course changes but something seems off with the scores across the entire Pro field. Do you think the wind changed significantly throughout the day? It seems this first round has caused many people to miss their ratings mark. Less than 30% of each field shot within 10 points of their rating. Could this be winter time shake off?

For the overall (current ratings - rd1 ratings) the overall was a negative 364 points, with positive increases in MPO & FPO and decreases in MPM & MPG.

Chuck Kennedy
March 1st, 2012, 07:13 AM
Remember that if a player shoots more than 60 points below their rating, they don't get included as propagators. Several potential props shoot more than 60 points lower due to the OB on that course. So what happens once their scores are excluded from the SSA calculation is the SSA goes lower which means their ratings end up even lower. That makes those 1100 rounds even tougher to reach.

When we've done studies comparing older Pros to younger Pros of the same rating, they average the same rating on resonably balanced courses. However, as you might expect, younger players of the same rating shoot better than the older players on mostly open courses with longer holes like at the Memorial. Older players shoot better on wooded courses than the youngsters. The effect isn't huge (2 shots over 18 holes) but enough to see when you look at cumulative ratings like your neg 364 calculation.

McBeth avg. 1099 so far. Wowza

Flash
March 1st, 2012, 05:57 PM
McBeth was one shot from 1100 again today and he made two mistakes that cost him that record. He bogeyed another hole when he probably birdies or pars it 95% of the time, similar to hole 13 yesterday. He has yet to even break into the 90's yet in his total score. Can you believe this score?!?!?!?!?!?

His level of competition is militant. He does not even require the time to compose/focus himself before or after distractions that his competitors do. He putts fast with no restraint and makes what appears to be 90% of his putts within 40 feet but rarely leaves himself outside 22 feet. He is like a machine with a calm cool demeanor. He shakes adversity off and seems to be able to forget mistakes on the next throw.

Needless to say two other players are hanging tough with him at the top but unless they can get McBeth to crack this might require two 1100+ rounds by either of these individuals in the last two rounds to wrestle this one away. Looks like a 3 horse race going into round 3!

Hey though rating for rating Greg Schwartz and Clayton Adams are killing it as well. Did anyone pick these guys on their fantasy leagues? Wouldn't that have been a nice sleeper prediction.

Chuck do you keep a tournament Round rating record by course SSA?

The wind today is awesome, anyone catch some of the live feed for the ladies? The wind was kicking discs around like Styrofoam cups. Hole 12 was hard to watch.

It has also slowed Paul McBeth up significantly and Devan Owens &Will Schusterick have been gaining significant ground on Paul. Dave feldberg is falling off the pace and is currently over par for the round. Curious to see if Will S. has the hot round for round three. He is looking like a 1070 rated round if he finishes out strong.

Avery Jenkins with the Hot round of 49 in the wind. Man that rates a 1095 smoking hot and a good jump for him to the second card. The battle tomorrow looks like it will be familiar territory for the lead card!

Ken Climo shoot a 51 to climb back into the top 10 as well. If it is windy tomorrow, and it looks like it may be, then you will not want to miss the live coverage. 6 strokes seems like a lot but not in the wind at Fountains.

Not specifically by course but here's our "best ever" round record thru 2010: http://www.pdga.com/player-ratings-search/top-10-best-rounds-ever-5-ssa-ranges-men-women
You can see Vista shows up a fair amount. What's interesting is that Vista will show up in two categories with records after this event because the SSA was around 58 on Wednesday and was around 62 today with Avery adding another round in the top 10. Val also enters the women's top 10 list today which is likely the first time brother and sister registered rounds rated in the top 10 the same day.

We played early Friday am. And I want to tell you I have never played in wind that steady and hard. 30 to 40mph it would be like throwing in troutdale in a major wind storm. The afternoon round scores were much lower thanks to mother natures lungs were tired and decided to only blow 10 to 15mph, it was truly one of the most frustrating rounds of golf I have ever played. Hey Sandy how many discs did you loose at fountains? Did anyone in your group just loose it during that last round? I lost one disc on hole #2 on my up shot a wraith which I have never flipped over. Robert on hole 18 was up first on the tee and I had a one stroke lead, I know he was going to go for a 3 and threw it in the water then threw it in again in the water, which gave him a 7p, I played it safe and took a 4 and then turned in a miscalculated score card after 5 people checked it which gave me a 2 stroke penalty and still won by one stroke.
