View Full Version : Oregon Disc golf hall of fame

while at the worlds, the Disc Golf Hall of fame members suggested that all the states create their own hall of fame. If anyone agrees that Oregon needs one, then we can work on the Bylaws to support this.
To that end, I would like to nominate the Jerry Miller and Keith Schupp to two of the four positions that I think we should fill this year. That way they can help with the drafting of the Bylaws.
Do I hear a second on this motion?
Thanks - Pop Tufty

I like all 3 choices!! what parameters do we want to set for inclusion of inductees?
1 promoters of the sport
2 people who bring new players into the sport
3 people who throw and score well
4 volunteer efforts exceeding most others
5 what is number 5.....ideas?????

Jerry Miller,Keith Schupp, Steve "Yoseman" Wright, Tom Embree, Bruce Sisson, and yes the originator of the Eugene disc golf club Gary "Sasquatch" Helvig. Other notables for ~Swami, Roller Bob, Wayne-Tom, Roland VanBiber, I could keep going...

I like this idea, but the previously mentioned three have to accept the nominations first. If you guys are browsing, please accept your nomination and we can move this forward.

So it looks like we have a great list started for nomination into the Oregon Disc Golf "Hall of Fame".
Maybe a dumb question/s here but I'll throw it out there anyway. :biggrin2: Will those inducted be given a plaque? A special gift? Or.......just the honor of knowing they are "in"? Will there be a physical location where a plaque or trophy is kept with the names of those inducted? If yes to either of the questions, then where will the money come from? Will there be an event to Officially welcome them into the OHF?
I personally like the idea of an Oregon Hall of Fame and do like the idea that those inducted receive at the very least a plaque with their name on it, and maybe even a plaque that each year a new tag can be added for future recipiants be kept in a safe and accessible place.
Please share ideas, yay or nay! If money is needed to get this off the ground, count me in for $20.

Hi Bob, once you are over 40 there are no dumb questions. That said, I think that a wall plaque AND their name on a perpetual trophy makes sense. How about presenting this at the Oregon State disc golf championships? I would think that some of the proceeds from the tournament could be used for this - it won't cost much, but that is just an idea. Perhaps this could be collected from the players on a volunteer basis, maybe as a seperate ace pot where instead of rolling the funds to a closest to the pin, unclaimed $ goes to the OHF fund. After all, the likely reason there is a tournament in the first place was with the ground work of the OHF members.
Not sure where to keep the perpetual trophy for most of the year, but a picture of it should find its way to a few courses and tournaments, at the least.
Keep the ideas flowing, Take some "creative juice" if you have to, but let's hear them.

I just had another idea, where the new members are honored with a bench in a golf course at a location decided upon by last year's inductees. Not sure about the other folks, by my tired feet could use a breather, and this way perhaps we could get more buy in from the rest of the tournament community if they could share this "bounty".

I accept with honor and some big, joyful tears. Thank you.
Perhaps we should start a thread on Oregon disc golf history, so folks could gain a better picture on when, who, where disc got started in Oregon.
An example might be the Grants Pass area and Greg Guthrie.
Mostly unheard of, this fella is the one who built most of the courses in the GP area.

Because it is the Oregon Hall of Fame does it mean they have to currently LIVE in Oregon? Because they currently live elsewhere does it in any way diminish their accomplishments and what they did for Oregon Disc Golf? I don't feel like that should be a determining factor. Just my 2 cents!

That sounds great, as Steve Pierre said that we could not do this at Champoeg park. I think that we should ask the HoF members where they would like to display their gloryness.

I would say no and no, but in an effort to answer this question, I poked around a bit to other DGHoF sites, and the PDGA HoF was the only one I could find. I took the liberty of a little cut and paste (and editing) to arrive at this proposed charter.
At the risk of a "design by committee", I will post it now:
THE HALL OF FAME CHARTER
The Oregon Disc Golf Hall of Fame seeks to honor outstanding contributors to the sport of disc golf by annually inducting individuals nominated and selected by a duly empowered Board of Directors.
Oregon Hall of Fame inductees shall be judged to fit the following standards:
• Favorable standing and an honorable reputation within the disc golf community.
• Made significant contributions to the sport of disc golf through development, promotion, leadership, or sportsmanship that merit recognition, remembrance and respect.
The Board of Directors shall be comprised of a Chairman and three Directors. The chairman of the Board shall serve the Board until he chooses to remove himself. A departing Chairman may either appoint a successor a direct the incumbent Board members to nominate and elect a new Chairman. Each Director shall serve the Board until he or she chooses to remove him/herself. A Director may be removed from the Board if he receives fewer than seventy five percent of members votes of confidence should such a vote be called and seconded by the Board members. When a Director’s position becomes vacant, nominees for a replacement will be accepted from the incumbent board members.
If for any reason fewer than four Board positions are filled and available for voting, the Chairman of the Board may at his or her discretion unilaterally appoint replacements to the Board Members.
The Board of Directors shall convene at least once a year (in person and/or by mail, telephone, etc.) to conduct the business of administering the Oregon Disc Golf Hall of Fame. Yearly inductees shall be announced at the biggest tournament of the year in Oregon (most likely the Beaver State Fling).

It is the least I can do to pay back the contributors to the sport's growth. Here is a sneak preview for all the folks that cannot make it to the Fling tomorrow.

Thank you Steve for getting this HOF thing started, there have been many worthy people who have been instrumental in the growth of this great lifestyle. There are so many that have not built the love, but have complained while not participating at a level that remotely nears the efforts of those that have been inducted. Good choices so far in my humble opinion.

Pops, Yoseman, Hyzerbomb, Redfern, etc., etc. (way too many to list everyone) and yeah, even the old, old, old X-Man - You guys rock!
Thanks for "keeping the flame burning" all these years - long after I (kinda/sorta) burned out.
Yoseman, I am truly humbled and honored by your kind words and nomination. (Plus, it was AWESOME seeing you and playing a short round with you at Lawson Bar last week!)
When I think about the growth of disc golf in Oregon, SO MANY people come to mind - all equally or more deserving of this awesome recognition.
Thank you all! As my old friend Fred would say, "I love you Man."
