This year, due to lowered projected entries, we have decided to only run Bryant park for the tournament. There will be only 1 pool with a limit of about 90 people. We will add extra temp holes as needed. There will be two rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday. The award ceremony will begin at the Calapooia Brewery at about 3 pm on Sunday. Camping will still be at Bryant park for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for $5 a night. Registration and more information will follow when we have it.

"I'm a little disappointed in the status of registrations (a little over 1/2 full) with the event less than 3 weeks away" From the Willamette Open thread.

This is the "Nut Shell" explanation. We're one of the smallest Oregon events of the year and we've never filled up. If the Willamette Open can't fill (which is traditionally hard to get into) there is nothing to indicate that we would come close either.

No one is more frustrated by this than we are! Trust me. But with such a small club it's taxing in the extreme to run more than one course.
If our 90 spots fill up fast though......who know what could happen?

Agreed, the CC was on my list of must play this year and i cant wait to play either way. I will spead the word within the Lane CC DGC and see if we cant get the WO and the CC to fill. I shall see you all at the Open in ~3 weeks.

Truthfully, this event being only at Bryant is a detractor for me. I love Timber Linn and I love Waterloo and I would be all-in if one of those courses were added. As it is, this might be the first year that I miss the Calapooia Classic since 2006.

The first tournament I ever played was an all bryant CC. I hope I can get the time off to play this one.

Reg will open when? One way to get attendance up is to get some buzz going. I know I'm looking forward to my 6th consecutive Calapooia Classic (SSS 2006) and first PDGA title defense!

I submitted the tournament details last Tuesday and we're still waiting for PDGASignup to make it official... :bricks: The tournament flyer has also been sent to the calendar master but has yet to appear there. :dancing:

WO's issues could be related to having it the same weekend as King of the Lake (NT) in Tahoe. All 4 courses being played are awesome and may very well be a preview of a future Worlds. :whistler:

I'd think the date change from previous years and late announcement and explosion of tournaments on almost every weekend of the year have more to do with it. I know I was bummed when I realized I couldn't play!

This is closer to correct. There are so many events now that there is almost no way to avoid having 2 or more in state events on the same day or weekend. Although Mat is the only one I have heard say that the date change of the WO is why he can’t play, it is possible that it may affect other people. The Chick Flick has just announced that it will be on the 16th making some women have to choose between that and the WO.

This is the third year I have had The Wash on the 23rd. I picked that date because there were no events and new in state events still pop up on that date a month or less before my event.

This is just how disc golf life is right now and I think the variety is good.

I agree that more is better and kind of what we've always wanted. I don't know that the date change for WO is affecting many people - I just have to plan this stuff out in advance if I want to play and by March or so my disc golf calendar has stretched to the limits of my wife's tolerance. :)

The July Chick Flick is the casual, monthly event; not the big tournament that we are having August 13-14th. Mostly casual players attend these monthly events, shouldn't deter the tournament players.

Yes actually we announced at the beginning of the year that the Chick Flick monthlies would be the 3rd Sunday of every month, with the exception of this month we changed it to Saturday, and of course our manin event August 13th & 14th. Most of the ladies who are regulars to the Chick Flick monthlies do not play in tournaments with the exception of me, but they already know I won't be there because I will be at the WO. :rockon:

The layout for the classic will be as follows. 1st round all easy. 2nd round odd holes in the hard position. 3rd round all pins in the hard position.

I was down at Bryan on Sunday to check the place out and while I still love all of the holes out in the fields, those ones in the back still have no fairways. Seriously... either make a fairway for people to hit or don't put the baskets back in some of those long positions.

It turns a game of skill into a game of "who got the better kick off all of the crap in the way".

Worked for me! But I do tend to agree on some of the holes in some of the long positions. I love Bryant and continue to be impressed by how much work so few people have accomplished there!

Now if they'd just let you get tee pads poured in the woods. Bryant is one or two amenities away from being one of the best courses in the PNW.

Bryant will never have concrete tee pads in the woods - ever. The whole park is technically wetlands and that we have anything in there at all is amazing. Get used to the shag tee pads because they will be there for quite a while, I am guessing.

Yes, I know about the wetlands/teepads thing. It's such a silly interpretation of the wetlands protection rules, and I'm not really convinced it couldn't be changed. Not that I'm suggesting the club should pursue this, but the City could likely get a waiver but is probably leary of opening up a can of worms. Yes, it's "wetland"....completely trashed by previous uses, post industrial, almost 100% non native vegetation with the trees slowly being killed by English ivy, concrete slab and chunks of metal buried everywhere "wetland". Adding cement slabs would in no way affect the biological value of this wetland, and if the owners of the property actually cared about the wetland and its biological value they would at the least spend some time and money cutting the ivy that is strangling the big ash and cottonwood trees there.

*whew* ok, off my enviro soapbox.....again - not a criticism of the club in any way..it is true that its amazing they got a course put in at all and it's one of my favorite courses.

So, Sam, can I assume you'll be signing up in MPM for this so we can finally play a tournament round together? I believe the first time we did was in MA2 at Bryant in 2006. :dancing:

I think you're right. I haven't decided on MA1 or MPM. Will decide in the next week or so but MM1 is unlikely for this event with such a small overall field.

Everything except Seatac. I didn't say THE best, or one of the top five, but if they could get teepads, teesigns, a few benches, and some more regular maintnenance I think it could be one of the best in the region, yes. Open holes, technical holes, long holes, multiple par 4's and it is very very challenging. Many would say unfairly challenging or too much luck, but you can always make it easier by removing trees, you can't put trees back.

If it had the amenities I would rank it in the tier with Adair and Dexter and Pier, if not slightly above. Clearly not at the McIver/Whistlers level even all tricked out. Seatac I can't speak to, and although I do like Trojan a lot, I think a lot of people see the multiple water hazards as a detraction from overall quality. I don't, but that's the thing...it's a subjective judgment for sure. In terms of the guts of the course, I think Bryant has the potential and is a great course.

I guess getting that big Ace there didn't hurt either. :)

In re-reading your post, I find I must actually AGREE. I speed-read it the first time, and thought you were claiming it could be one of the TOP TWO courses in the NW, which you actually did NOT say. Sorry about that; I retract my disagreement. :kissflowers:

I just played Bryant today. All baskets are in the long position, scored a 69. That course kicks your ass around. It's should have been +8, except for 2 dumbass double bogeys. I don't think that the woodsy sections are any more thick than the ones at adair, they're just par 4s.

Yes. Pre-registration is always preferable but if there is space we will take your money day of.

We installed new alternate pin locations on holes 8 and 9 this weekend. The plan is to put in alternates for holes 1, 4, and 13 some time this week. That will give us alternates on all 18!!! Woo hoo!

In the mean time I'll be amusing myself with a handsaw and some of those low branches...you know the ones...and getting those gaps opened back up. Should be a fun week.

I have posted an eviction sign at the park for all stinging insects. After next week I will use chemical warfare to combat the enemy. Let me know where the nests are if anyone plays the course beforehand.

We just spent the day at the park with machetes a blazing. Thanks Jeromie, Josh, and Dan for your hard work. Thirteen has a new alternate, 11 and 7 are now in the long position. Friday, new alternate for 4 (shorter), and clearing #3 alternate. Saturday, new alternate for #1 (shorter). That will put all 18 alternates in the ground. Then it's just cleaning and clearing for the tourney.

I'll be there all weekend as a volunteer. Those wooded holes can use lots of spotters to keep speed of play going. Anyone want to go down and volunteer with me?

Not that it will help the current registration situation, but I would like to point out that the Calapooia Classic is the FINAL EVENT at which people can qualify to play in the Oregon Disc Golf Championships. So come on people... get yourselves signed up for this fun event AND then register to qualify for the ORDGC as well.

When official registrations make it to me they are added to the current list. Posting on a forum is um, not official... :yawn:

I got a chance to play Bryant yesterday for the first time in several years.

I have a few questions about the course.

1. What is the line to the basket or preferred landing area on holes 7 & 12?

I had a great drive on hole 7 straight up the gut perfectly centered on the opening gap and hit a tree coming into the area about 80 feet out from the basket. I got kicked into the left side of the green area about 60 feet out we will call it and I had no shot to make the birdie attempt. The best shot I had was to an area left of the basket that would leave me a 25 foot putt to make par.

Going back to look at my tee shot I could not find a route off the tee that you could hit 5 out of 10 times that could leave you a birdie putt. I understand the need to increase difficulty but this hole seems a little extreme in luck factor. My group mates could not believe my luck after nailing the tee shot. I wish the course designers would look at this hole and decide on a line to play to reward a good shot. As it stands I would love to be shown how a good shot is rewarded on this hole.

Hole 12 has great potential for a difficult but fair par 4. With the elevation changes in the fairway it creates a need for identified landing zones that either provide direct lines to the basket or to other landing zones. I did not see any clear landing zone to try to throw to. There is a lot of debris and holes on that fairway that make it difficult to make a good up shot. I think this hole could be the best hole on the course with some clean up, some landing zone creation and some pecker pole thinning near the green area.

All in all I had fun playing Bryant again and shot a 64. Not a great score but one I can live with. Hole 6 took a bite out of my score and so did hole 12. The carpet was weird for me to play on as I could not rotate properly with either my shoes or my throwing style. My shoes would grab and I could not get the rotation I needed. I ended up changing my throwing style to minimize my issue and it seemed to help. I will need to get use to the carpet. Unless the county would allow concrete back there the only better solution might be astro turf.

Played Bryant yesterday. That place is in great shape! I shot a 60 (can't seem to get away from that #) and really like the new placements. I want to thank the Albany guys for all their hard work.

I was not picking I was more curious than anything. If there was a local route on 7 I selfishly wanted to know.

Hole 6 had lines to the basket but they were just tight. Tee shot depicted how easy it would be to get par. Poor second shots usually mean bogey. I personally played this hole poorly blind but would play it boringly in competition. I like the layout of hole 12 and the land that is in play there. Some clearing, landing zone creation and that hole will be the best hole on the course, in my opinion.

If I still lived in the mid valley I would be there for every work party. The group that works on this course is a good group of golfers and I eagerly wait to see the course mature.

What disc do you throw on that hole typically. I was throwing a beat up eagle that is dead straight and maybe that is how I got into trouble. The shot had no anny on it and hit the trees square and kicked me out to the left for no putt. Maybe I should go with a worked in sidewinder and work the anny flip to try to get inside the trees. can't wait to try it out on Friday, this Friday. Can't wait for some Bryant Park action this weekend.

Scott, that hole was fine as it was. If you wanted to add another position, longer was NOT the way to go, in my opinion. Of course, I can say that about oh... all of the woods pins, it seems. Maybe not 8 because I liked that new position but I did notice that that hole didn't get longer.

6, 7, 9... these didn't need to be lengthened.

After playing the course yesterday, I can definitely say that this coming weekend - at least with the pins in the long positions as many seemed to be - we will be having a luck competition rather than a disc golf competition. Everything else being equal, the guy or gal who gets the most luck will win the tournament.

Sam I disagree to some extent. More appropriately said would be "Of the Skilled the luckiest one will win!"

If you can not hit the basic line on these holes then you would never get lucky enough to score well. But if you are skilled enough to hit the basic line and then get lucky on the tree hits, kicks and landing then you will be wildly successful

Do you agree with this statement!

Really? Something else entirely?

So the perfect DG venue would be indoors? No wind? Consistent playing surface? Every fairway suitably wide and curved to match the disc flight?

Sounds kind of boring.

Even on a well-groomed course I can toss a perfect roller that hits some protuberance and skitters off into lala-land, and on any course I can make a perfect shot that hits a wind gust and sails OB.

I can appreciate the frustration one feels when you're tossing at a row of trees, but I also anticipate the elation felt when plastic somehow slips past all that wood fiber due to skill or luck or whatever.

I understand the challenges that Bryant poses and I'm sure I'll meet up with them this weekend, but some measure of luck does lend essential drama to this pastime.

There are only two ways that we can think of doing that...more distance and more trees. Everything that we did out there we did for a reason. For the most part disc golf courses only get easier over time. We want to make sure that things don't get too easy too fast.

If you live for the 2 then Bryant may not be for you. Just because you can't make a 2 on every hole doesn't mean it's a "crap shoot", either. It means you have to make better and smarter throws....and maybe even forget about the number 2.

So take it easy on the course bashing. We're working our asses off out there!

We know you are working your butts off Jeromie; that much is obvious. However, it has been frustrating in the past to see fairways opened up to the existing pin positions... then seeing the baskets pushed back to a point where again there are no reasonable fairways.

With that said, I will still be down there this weekend to support your event.

Yes and to the degree that we've lost many people who did like to play in our annual tournament. Virtually all of the new long positions in the woods at Bryant were used in the CC before they were "tournament ready" last year. In general they still aren't there yet, but creeping closer.

If you haven't already heard there is a new kid on the block. :yay: Legacy Discs is a new manufacturer from SoCal. Steve and Bamba Rico have realized there dream of a new line of discs. Their first model is called the Rampage and they are SICK!!! :rockon: With a speed 14 rating(should be a speed 18 lol) and a great feel in the hand. I brought back a batch of protos directly from worlds and they are going fast. I think I have 18 or so left so get yours while they're still around. I'm selling them for $20 a piece as they are a pre-release run and are sure to be rare when the productions come out. I'm going to be at the course in the morning bright and early so come find me if you wanna add 50ft to your game. See you all at the Poo!!!! :chug:

I want to personally thank the Albany Club for a bang up job of an event. I know that most golfers like larger fields so that if they win their winnings will be larger but I must say I liked the smaller event this weekend. I like not having to play in Pools, everyone on the course at the same time, no long days and an early & out on the last day of competition. Special thanks to Dave Pittman, Jeremy Fields and Scott Duvaul for all your hard work and making sure everything went smoothly

Bryant got the best of me this weekend but I enjoyed playing With Jason, Ryan, Carl, Travis, Bryan, Jordan, and Brandon. Great guys to play with.

I know that there is a little more work that Bryant needs to make some holes more playable but I enjoyed the course and it pointed out some strong weaknesses in my game.

Yep. DQ'd. Word travels fast. I played with him in my first round. I know he was straight that round as I record every score on every hole for everyone on my card. I also let people know that I am doing this so there should be no temptation in my group to cheat. I will catch you. I wasn't involved in the whole deal but hey... one more person I beat this weekend. That makes... three.

Strange things can happen when you're deep in the woods of Bryant.

Nothing much stranger than having three uniformed police officers with a photographer come up to your group, and asking, "Has anyone seen a naked, fat guy around here?" Apparently the least of this guy's indecencies was being naked, but I'll spare you the details.

Not that big a deal apparently. As the cop said, "It's just another day in Albany."

But I'll tell you one thing, if I was setting up a putt and the fat guy with his happy hands suddenly appeared in my line of vision, I would definitely ask him to move.

Also . . . really fun and well run tournament. Like Flash, I also liked the fact that we were all in one flight, and I loved the relaxed schedule.

And as far as the venue goes, if I played Bryant more than I do, I would be a better golfer. I can't think of another course that combines big, boomer holes followed by tight technical holes, and then here comes a big, tight, technical hole.

Good job Albany Club!

Big thanks to the Albany crew for all their hard work. Bryant looks better and better every year. Bryant is one of my favorite courses in the Albany area.

Nate ran away with the victory with 3 solid rounds. Dion and I battled it out for 2nd. We were tied for most of the tournament. With the pressure on I birdied the last three holes in a row, Dion bested me with birdies on the last 4 in a row. Good shooting :shooting:

You can thank my buddy for that :-) This is Ryan Palmer. I had a blast as well being my first tourney and all. Shot a decent 65 first round, sucked it up with a 78 second round and somehow bettered my score by 1 with a 77 in all long 'shrug'. I've played this course quite a bit (only live like 10 blocks away) just casually and never usually keep score. I feel that I played it better on all 3 rounds than I have ever played it before. Great people, great time, and thank god for the Pooia and great beer! Thanks guys. Oh and btw....thanks treelove for pointing out my falling putt approach.:slapface: Never played tournament before so I never noticed I was doing it :-) Its fixed now:wink2:

... i like bryant quite a bit in the short positions... didn't mind it so much with half in the long... felt like it was just silly all in the long... but i understand the desire to have a challenging course... i can see and totally appreciate all the hard work that is being done down there...

... i also thought that the police officers i got to know at 4am saturday morning were just delightful and very polite, the sergeant even wished me good luck in the tournament (altho, i'm not sure he ever figgered out that we weren't there for a softball tourney... but i hope i did him proud by winning... maybe i'll send him a thank you card for his support)...

great weather, great company, great beer at the calapooia brewery... i had a wonderful time and will definitely be back next year to see how those fairways are coming along... just a little artful logging and i think it will be perfect...

Thank you everyone for the support and positive/negative feedback on the course. Everyone's opinion is right, and the course will evolve to make the B positions more reachable. However next year we will begin to introduce the C positions, and as you can already guess they will indeed be longer, harder, and stupider. This is my mantra for course design -- longer, harder, stupider. If I can't get a birdie on a hole, no one else should either. I look forward to hearing you complaints next year. Thanks -- Scott.
