View Full Version : Question about ACE etiquette

Ok I know it is tradition to have your disc signed after you rip an ACE, but is it also tradition to sign the basket? I was playing the short course at Horning's on Sunday with my hubby Steve. We were on 16th, and witnessed someone skip an ACE into 18. Then once they got down to the basket they singed it with a sharpie:shocked: I am not sure how Bob H. feels about people writing on his baskets, but I thought it was not cool :nono: I have not noticed any other baskets with sigs on them, so I am just wondering if it is the norm.

I signed the basket on my first ace ever...then realized that that was a dumb thing to do. I sign their disc along with a fiver if I'm in their group. If I'm not in the group then I toss em a washington.

It was this person's first ACE by the way, so that would make it more special I suppose.

Yeah I have noticed that crap too. Some idiot is even bragging about their turkeys on some of the baskets. Who gives a shit about your turkey????? I noticed the Orchard baskets are starting to get pretty marked up as well. If everyone who got an ace at Orchard marked the basket they would all be colored black.

Vandalism is vandalism. Why would a golfer ever want to vandalize a golf basket? Makes no sense to me.
Proper ace etiquette includes cheering, jumping up and down, high fives, and disc signatures. A fiver is appropriate too, if that's how your group rolls.

I too was suprised to see the markings on short 18 when I played on Monday. A member of our group had just shot -14.... But he didn't write "I Own the Course!!!" on each Basket.
sign the disc, take a bow, snap a photo, fill your wallet and move on.

I think it is neat to see the name and date of people who aced a hole. Maybe not on orchards because pretty much all the hoels are aceable if thrown enough times. But on a course the size vance or up I would say it is a fun thing to do and it hurts no one. So the bar has writing on it, it's not a big deal and it is fun to look at. I've not done it yet, but I know people who have and I look at their signature whenever I think about it and am at that hole. It's harmless ...

Man... Brian if you ever stood a chance of getting an ace, I would almost like to be there so I could take video of you defacing the basket and then call the police.
You have made it clear that you would do the same to people who you see breaking the law. Turnabout is fair play, no?

I am in the middle of developing a course in Stayton and no way would I want anyone to be signing the baskets. It only encourages those who don't know that you only supposed to sign it for an ace, to just scribble on it their own names and dates. Sign the disc if you witnessed it. If you were in the group, pay $5 or more. If you were not in the group and witnessed it, $1 or more. But please don't just stand there and say sweeeet shottt dude and then procede to your own game. I aced a hardddddddddd hole right before a tournament 2 weeks ago, my 2nd ace ever and there were like 70 people within 200 feet warming up etc, at least 10 saw the whole flight, and only one person signed the disc and another gave a dollar, that was it. I thought that sucked cuz NorCal is famous for putting up dollars for aces and only one out of 70 gave me a dollar on what is a really hard hole to ace.... I have never witnessed an ace before but by golly when I do, i gonna put up more than a few dead presidents.

Brian is nothing more than an agitator. He obviously relishes the limited spotlight he gets here.
From what he writes here, it's safe to say he has no one to talk to.
I blame his mother for not breastfeeding him. And his father for the defective genes.
I sincerely doubt he's as big an idiot as he wants us to believe.
If this was 3rd grade, I'm fairly sure I could give him a nickel to eat his boogers.

Back to the subject. I agree that writing on any basket in uncool. Especially though when it in on private property like at Horning's. His homemade baskets are so cool looking all painted up that bright yellow. It looks really tacky with all the writing on the tire rim baskets. Like I said I am not sure how Bob H. feels about his baskets being signed. I think I will ask him next time I see him.

Do you think he'd let you have one for a nickel?
Tagging baskets probably wouldn't be a good thing to catch on. At best, it's defacing private or public property. I'm picturing stick golfers with spray paint in their bags, painting the greens. And I get upset when I find a cigarette butt on the course!

I'm not crazy about folks tagging Bob's baskets, and will even let an Ace pass, provided they sign the pole, NOT THE BASKET!. As to the guy who marked his turkey, well that's just dumb.

I figure it's tagging and once it catches on, it will become a competition. The pole is what there is to tag on a regular basket. It's not been done here, but if it is.... Well, that's what silver paint is for.

Would a bragging board so to speak at the disc golf course be a possible solution? A place to post for all to see, a persons achievement. If you get an Ace, a Turkey, a 50 ft. putt, or what ever, you can sign the board with hole, disc, name ect. We work hard to get courses in the ground and I'd hate see vandelism by the very people they are there for jeapordize the future of our courses. It's not cheap to put in a course and one of the selling points is that upkeep is minimal. Ideas?

PLEASE, DON'T TAG THE BASKETS!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, this is not acceptable behavior at a majority of courses I have been to in the USA. Like others on this forum, I will report those who do this to the appropriate authorities.

Actually come the think about it they do have an Ace board at Horning's. I remember Shawn mentioning getting her name on the board when she got her Ace on 6 big course a couple of months ago.

I'm really not trying to be controversial, let's not make this about me. I just think it is neat to look at the pole and see people's names and dates. If I had a course, and that very likely will happen in the next few years, I would totally allow it. if it became a problem ... silver spray paint and a sign asking them not to do it .. or a board attached to the top of a basket like a basket # sign that is made to mark your aces. I don't consider it vandalism but then again I am sure you guys consider putting stuff on the weeping wall in Israel is littering?

it's really not that hard of a concept. DON'T WRITE ON BASKETS. EVER. not now, not later, NEVER.
you can't let people sign them for a little while and then pull the plug... that won't work. the general public are for the most part Dolts and don't play like that. we must train them that this behavior is not acceptable.
i don't care who you are but when you drop 5000$$$ for baskets just to have the local schmoe brag about his stupid skip shank that luckily went in you're going to be pissed. it's fu*&ing vandalism and i hope i never see it around these parts.
i will flip out. :biggrin2:
and with that said if i'm putting in a tourney and see a name i recognize and miss the putt your ass is mine.

It may be neat to see names and dates on the pole for aces, but many people who didnt ace, will sign it and date it anyways, and a whole chain of BS graffitti will follow. It's just the way society is. We may have good ideas and intentions for the little things, but others that don't know as much as we do will always do something else...

yeah that might be true. I think maybe a community board might be a decent idea, I think it is fun to see who aced what. it would be impossible to figure out the imposters .. but you can't let the few ruin it for the masses.

I didn't even notice the asinine comment about the "weeping" (sic) wall. WOW...
A, I think you meant the "Wailing" Wall, also known as the Western Wall (for its location on the temple mount) or the HaKotel HaMa'aravi.
B, the papers put into the "Wailing" Wall are considered sacred prayers. When the wall gets "full", the prayers are put into coffins and buried on the Mount of Olives with an accompanying religious rite.
But yeah... your straw man arguments are at least time-consuming if not intelligent or accurate.

Hey guys I went ahead and PMed Bob Horning and asked how he felt about people writing on his baskets since my original post was pertaining to an incident that happened on his course. Below is his response to me that he said I could repost on this thread.
Hi Cindy, Actually it is OK, for to me it adds a personal touch to the course and lets the one who aced it have a nice way to connect and add their own individually to it. Eventually we'll have to repaint them all anyway, to as long as they don't get carried away or as long as their is no defacing then I don't have a problem.
Thanks for watching out for us, I do appreciate it greatly!!
Thanks, Bob
When I get my first ace I still am only going to have my disc signed that's just how I feel personally on the subject.

I won't go so far as to say I condone writing on the baskets, but it really doesn't bother me that much. That was the tradition on the course I learned on in CA, and I've seen it on a few holes around here. As far as tagging goes, its pretty minimalistic, you don't see it until you're right up in front of it. I have much bigger issues with people leaving trash on the course, cutting/breaking trees, not picking up after their dogs, and REAL tagging (like the big spray painted "MS13" on the coolest tree at SeaTac ). I would definitely frown on somebody writing on a basket at a private course, however--that's just plain rude if the owner isn't OK with it. Pretty cool that Bob H. is OK with it though.
