help me out here, amigos y amigas...

... i super need a new bag as i am plagued by back issues...

... the quad shox do not fit my torso, which is super short, and therefore my bag hangs down to my butt and gives me spasms (also it gets my butt wet, which is cold enough as it is, and it looks funny to have wet patches on my booty)... i am in love with the grip eq bag, but it won't come out til september and i need something before then...

advice, please & thank you!!!

Have you tried the smaller version of the quads?

If you go the cart route I'd suggest the pimp one at gottagogottathrow.

I'd definitely recommend a backpack style bag, my experience is they're a lot better at distributing the weight (plus your straps are a lot easier to keep dry). Pretty much only a few options there though, the Revo backpacks, the GB Simian, or the Mystery Ranch Golf Majal, or you might be able to score a Grip if you can someone selling their old one. My personal opinion is that the best bang for the buck is one of the Revo bags, and the best all around is the Mystery Ranch. The Simian is solid too, but more expensive than it should be, IMO.

Edit: I haven't been keeping up on stuff lately, but Grip is supposedly hoping to have their new and revised version out in June or earlier. Who knows if they'll be able to meet that deadline or not. http://grip-eq.com/media/single/second_run/

bob, do have anything useful to contribute here or have you just been waiting for the opportunity to use that photo?

matt... i totally gave you the benefit of the doubt that the parentheses were referring to me... which you are lucky since i am on the tail end of my pre-midlife crisis and tend towards touchy on the age subject... helps that i keep forgetting how old i am... oh, no! does that mean i'm getting old?!

... rolly carts i don't think are my deal... my home course is not super rolly cart friendly... plus, i'm not that old, dammit... :p

tim, i got word from a pretty dang good source (the amazing rebecca duffy thru cindy mcmahan) that the grip bags are being reworked and now won't be ready until september... bother...

jevon, thanks for the link... i will check out the smaller size quad shox perhaps to hold me over til the end of the summer...

... anybody know what kind of back pack melo is rocking? she's a smaller gal...

thanks!

Living in the valley in California for 2 years has totally changed my perspective on "strollers/joggers/carts". They were everywhere, sure a lot more in the older group of guys and gals used them but plenty of amateurs including myself used joggers that we have/had for our kids, modified them to fit disc golf and it was awesome.
So don't think carts/joggers = old, it just being resourceful and they can carry a whole lot more without the back issues. I'm only 29 now and I've been using my son's jogger for rounds for the last 3-4 years. Do what you think is best for you, not what other people think, besides if they say anything, they are just jealous... Once my 2nd son is done with the jogger, you can be sure I am modifing the crap out of it to fit disc golf..

[If possible can you send a couple photos of the stroller setup? Wondering why Innova or some company has not come out with a luggage style bag/cart combo?? It seems simple enough to take a over head luggage with wheels and adapt it for disc...

Hey you Steve totally has the revo backpack, and you can totally check it out anytime. :)

I love my revo bag, but am having some of the same back issues. Yes I am old, but not ready for a cart. :p I might have to check out the smaller shock straps that might help thanks Jevron. :yay:

the cart thing isn't for me (i don't care if people say it's only for old people... i was born in the wrong generation anyway)... it's just that i don't think i can take it everywhere i want to golf... we've got some pretty sketch bridges out in the ol' heathen canyon and very rough rough...

... i forgot steve's got the back pack, i'll have to try it on next time i see him... between being at baby level all day at work and hauling around a non-ergonomic golf bag i'm just one little mess of spasm and no me gusta!

It would cost too much to make a disc golf specific stroller/jogger especially when it is cheaper to just pick up used joggers anywhere and modify them based on what you want out of it.

As for backpacks for disc golf; The simian is the best... and they just revamped the design big time...

Try converting a diaper bag into a disc golf bag. Look around at work if folks have them. Some have straps, handles, and a long shoulder strap. That way you can change how you carry whenever you want. They also tend to have lots of pockets. I converted a messenger bag, it works great.

I am not too sure if the Simian is right for a smaller frame. I feel if the normal quadshocks dont fit well then the simian will never ride correctly.

I agree though the simian may be the best backpack on the market but the silverback still is my baby.

I know of at least one player that uses a set up like this (http://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bag-Company-30290-ToolRider/dp/B000WEMFK2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1302019621&sr=8-1). He finds them more adjustable, durable, and comfortable than quads and for about 1/2 the price. For the record he has a smaller frame.
Just my measly idea...perhaps a trip to a hardware store and try some on?

I had issues with quads fitting into my Sim, but that was on the first run. They fit on fine, but you had to be careful about the way you put the bag on to keep them straight. Trying to carry the bag on one shoulder was next to impossible--the "yolk" part of the quads would slip through the connection point on the bag, so the bag would flip sideways and you'd have a Skittles party before you knew it. I know the connection point has been improved in subsequent versions though.

I did some research, and the newly revised design does indeed look like a lot of improvements have been made. I definitely like what he's done.

Em, the way the quads hook up to the Simian is completely different than how they hook up on a regular bag. I'd be willing to bet they'd fit you just fine, but it looks like he's improved his strap design so you likely wouldn't need quads anyway.

I original issues were that normal quads were too big for Emma Rose and hence did not fit her well. I have a big frame and quads work great :) with the simian.
My comment was merely stating that a small frame may still encounter issues with comfort and ride using normal quads.

Sorry for the misunderstanding :)

I have tried the new Gen2 GB Simian on and the extra wide straps keep the bag high and tight. If you back pack much you will know that the closer to your body the better so your lower back doesn't have to compensate for the weight behind you.

I have owned a Revo Duel Pack for two years and it is closer to a book bag it's comfy enough when it's light but get it loaded up with water and all your tourney gear and it does sag down on your back and lets face it your not going to be using the waist strap to help support it.

The Simian on the other hand feels more like my 5500cu backpack, the wide straps hug close to your back and weight doesn't seem to affect how it rides. Throw the stool in the mix so you are sitting whenever possible (resting your back) and its hard to beat.

It's only $50 more for the Simian and when you consider the impact a bag can have on the HOURS of disc golf you plan to play this summer I find it hard to justify not spending the extra $$. This is when comparing Dual Pack to the GB Simian if your looking to go less than a hundred than thats a whole different story.

Bottom line if you can find someone with a Gen 2 Simian beg them to let you try it on. I think you and I are signed up for many of the same upcoming tourneys so If no one lets you try one on I will let try mine(If I get it by then)

hehehe.

I was directing my question to cerrgurry. My quads stay in place just perfect on the simian. But Tim is right, the quads or the stock strap on the simian ride completely different than regular bag hook ups, which are way low. THis is one of the main reasons I switched to the backpack style, other than the chair, because the bag would ride low and hit my butt and just cause all kids of back issues for me.
Obviously you can see that on the pictures of the new simian that the straps are at a different location. I am making a video on my bag contents etc to be released soon.
As for Emma, any backpack design will probably work for you, but it is up to you to try them all out to see which one you like the best. The simian is probably the biggest in height. There are plenty of simian and revo players to help you sample their bags. We all will probably be curious on what your reviews of the other backpack bags are...

Emma, I had the same issues with the quads, and I fixed it by removing the carabiners, D-rings, and all from the back straps. Then I just threaded the black strap material of the quads through the D-rings on my bag, adjusted to as high as it will go. The only issue is that the straps have to rotate 90 degrees for attachment, but it didn't affect my comfort level any.

If your bag is capable of this, I recommend it as a solution until you get a different setup. If it isn't capable, it wouldn't take too long to sew a couple of D-rings to your bag.

Off subject but...

I got a combination backpack/carryon luggage roller as a free gift from work the other day. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I could fit two of the revo backpack plastic frames one on top of the other in there. A couple dozen discs, plus a built in pullcart that can be easily slid away and converted into a somewhat comfortable back pack, might make me retire my revo bag.

If I get inspired, I'll try to build an internal frame sturdy enough to sit on like the simian, and a lift for some bigger tires.

I'll post a few pictures when/if it's functional.

To bring it back to the subject...

Emma, I'll sell you the finished product for $500 dollars (75% forum disccount included)

The straps that I use came from an army surplus store. They are stiff- have no bouncy give, and are fairly short so my carolina bag (with straps fully extended) sits above my arse. I find these straps way more comfortable than my dga gel straps and they are about 35 dollars cheaper. Could be worth a 5 dollar experiment.

Emma,

I just bought a Mystery Ranch Golf Mahal Pack. This is an expensive Pack, but an amazing weight distribution through the yoke system, comfort, unsurpassed quality of material and craftsmanship, and the ability to collapse the pack down to hold 15-19 discs including putters or expand to hold almost 40 discs. If your willing to spend $150 on a Dual Pack, $180 on a Grip, or $200 on a Simian. Then you might consider $250 for a Yoke harness system that is a dream to carry a heavy load from a company that has proven quality and knowledge of outdoor packs in a versatile design. Umbrella setup is cool too (doubt I will use much though), and fully waterproof with built in rain-fly.

I really value my back, since I only get one. My loaded PDGA bag with Innova straps has taken a toll on my spine this season. This Mahal could help me play without pain on those grueling dual 27 hole layout rounds in the Summer at Milo as I try to get as good as the people I admire. They have 3-different sizes to fit any frame, and the yoke is adjustable within each size frame.
