Stumptown Disc Golf
presents
2011 Oregon Disc Golf Championships
Sept 17th & 18th
3 rounds of 18 holes at Trojan Disc Golf Course

This PDGA sanctioned B-Tier invitation only event is designed to deliver the USDGC experience to players right here in Oregon. In order to crown 4 Oregon State Champions, we will again be setting up the Trojan Disc Golf Course in its most challenging layout ever. If you have any doubts about the difficulty of this course just ask someone who played the event last year. This course is no joke.

Divisions & Number of Players
76 total players
32 Open Men, 6 Open Women, 32 Advanced Men, 6 Advanced Women

Invitations
Invitations will be awarded to the top eligible finishers in each division based on their overall score for that weekend. Players can only qualify once and invitations are non-transferable. In the event of a tie, I will give a spot to both players and remove one spot from the final qualifying event.

This is an “opt-in” event. To be eligible to qualify for the ORDGC players will need to pay $10 prior to the start of the first round of play at each qualifying event for their scores for that weekend to count. This $10 is NOT included in any entry fee for any of the above listed events. This is an entirely separate event and fee.

Please feel free to sign up to qualify via the Stumptown Store: REGISTER HERE (http://www.stumptowndiscgolf.org/node/69)

Qualifiers
The following events will serve as qualifiers for the ORDGC:
Great Northwest Open, McIver 3PO, Rose City Open, Beaver State Fling, Willamette Open, Whistling Discs Open and the Calapooia Classic.

Each event will award the following number of invitations:
Open Men - 4, Open Women - 1, Advanced Men - 4, Advanced Women – 1. The only exceptions will be if a division fills early due to ties etc.

Masters
Masters players are welcome to play in the ORDGC, but there will be no age based divisions. Masters will be eligible for invitations provided they play the same course at the same time as their non-protected division. For example: a Pro Master can qualify based on his score IF he played the same course at the same time as Open players. I will be asking TDs to make accommodations for this, but ultimately it will be up to them. Pro Masters are obviously welcome to try to qualify by playing in the Open division.

Schedule

I will have the course ready for practice rounds mid-morning on Friday, Sept 16th.
On both days we will have our players meeting at 8:30AM and should be teeing off around 9:00am.

In my defense, I did make an effort to find the information. Google search returned nothing useful in the top few links. I also browsed through Treelove's calendar, although I see now that I missed it.

Thank you for both the information and the witty way in which it was supplied.

A few, very minor tweaks, but I think I got pretty close to what I wanted on that first time through.

Rest assured, the tweaks will NOT make it play easier. Muahahahahahaa.

Will there be volunteers needed??

Always! Randy and I volunteered last year, and saw some amazing golf. It doesn't hurt either that you're getting thanks from everyone as well. They need lots of spotters, since there are some really tough OB lines, plus it's nice to be able to help players at least attempt to spot discs that went into the water, but not far. We couldn't do much though, for the discs that ended up in the middle of the lake!

This is absolutely true. The more volunteers we have, the better the event runs. Plus, I honestly think ORDGC is one of the best events at which to volunteer because it really is the best golfers in the area on one of the most challenging courses in the state.

Plus, where's the harm in a little schadenfreude from the volunteers. ;)

Jeff

PS: Thank you to anyone considering volunteering at ANY event. It cannot be said enough how valuable volunteers are to disc golf events.

I hope my first time paying to qualify did the trick this weekend at the Fling. There are 8 players who finished better than me that I conceive of playing the event, and I'm sure that not all of them paid for the opportunity yet. Got my fingers crossed!

I know this is more BSF related than anything, but hats off to Haggerty and anyone else who had anything to do with the change to hole 1 West at Milo. That was a very ORDGC style move. I dig it. I think it was pretty popular with most pros as well.

That's a great idea, but the tarp behind the basket makes the hole too easy for the ORDGC.

I'm pretty sure it was Cris Bellinger and/or Mike Phillips who initially mentioned this possible hole position to me. All I did was convince Mittl we could make it work for the Fling. Its still not perfect, but it will be improved. I love the fact that we saw everything from a 3 to an 8 on that hole.

I loved it because I birdied it both times. There was maybe a small bottleneck at the hole, but no worse than normal for my groups. Other than mowing some more of the tall grass and thistles to the right of the basket I don't think it needs much.

Some of the up and coming advanced ladies who I think would be interested in throwing down for this I donn't think are on the forum. I will spread the word to them, and let them know about the upcoming qualifiers. We also have a new open lady who has recently moved to the area from SF, and I will let her know as well because I am not sure she is on here either.

Don't pull all your hair out Jeff we will do everything we can to get 6 open & 6 advanced ladies this year. We really appreciate all the extra effort you have put out for the ladies, and we will do everyting in our power to not let you down.

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to remind everyone that the Willamette Open this weekend is a qualifier event for the Oregon Disc Golf Championships. However because of the two-pool, two course format it will be nearly impossible for me to take registrations at the event itself. If you are interested in qualifying to play in the ORDGC event, please head over to THIS LINK (http://www.stumptowndiscgolf.org/node/69) on the Stumptown Store and register there.

I am really hoping to see more people trying to qualify for this event, because the ORDGC will be your only chance to play Trojan Park in this extremely challenging layout.

I have a question for people intending to play this event.

I may be able to get a couple people out to Trojan to do some swimming for lost discs. If this all works out, I fully intend to ensure these guys get some cool swag for their efforts, but I would also like to know if you all think it is too much to ask of players to "donate" $2 for each disc of theirs that gets fished out of the water.

I know if I threw my favorite whateverthehell in the water, I'd be more than happy to pay a swimmer a couple bucks... but how about YOU?

$2 for my Green Champ Groove on #8 (1st shot)

$2 for my Star T-Rex #8 (2nd shot)

And an extra $2 to leave that stupid wahoo I'll toss in the water till it sinks (peace of crap)

Shoot I cannot even buy new DX disc for $6. That's a great deal.

*) I have not qualified yet?
*) Who I need to beat at the next event in order to qualify?
*) Who else has also paid but not qualified yet?
*) I don't have enough money to buy back all the discs I have lost at Trojan, even at $2 each

Jeff,
Is there a chance next year that you might figure out a way for the many of us older golfers who would like to play in this event?
Some of the fellers who planted and nurtured the growth of disc golf in the state don't have much of a shot with your current format. Not complaining, just wondering. Yeh I know Shupp runs the Masters gig, but it'd be cool to have us all together on the same weekend.
I have yet to find any other state that does it the way you do.

The biggest problem with adding anyone to this event is capacity. This is a slow playing course, so scheduling is definitely an issue.

I am going to look in to the possibility of moving this event to tee times next year which I think might will let me add a few additional groups to the course, but that is still up in the air.

Maybe instead of adding groups, you could adjust the caps on each division you have and add some more divisions. (Master/Grand Master)
Perhaps 8-10 PGM/PM instead of 40-50 advanced master's.
At least it's up in the air and not a roller. :biggrin2:

As a small token of my appreciation for his many years of volunteering at at countless work parties and tournaments in our area I would like to personally extend an invitation to play in the 2011 ORDGC to Murray "The Brit" Prictor. This is the very least I can do for someone who gives so much, but rarely gets to play himself.

This one is on me Murray.

Thank you again for all you do

http://fineartamerica.com/images-medium/god-save-the-queen-album-cover-sex-pistols-1979-richard-john-holden.jpg

A Bloody swell idea jeff! There are alot of great people out there who are very giving of their time and resources to the disc golf community, but with that said, you'd be hard pressed to find a more deserving chap than the Brit to honor with an exemption. Way To Go!!

Not only is Murray deserving of a bid in the event but we should all be so lucky to call Murray our friend. He is a steward of disc golf and the care & giver of countless hours of his spare time to develop, maintain and give back to the courses and tournaments we all cherish.

If you don't know Murray and want to know what all the clamor is about I suggest you ask him to meet to play a round and then you will know why this guy is a stand up fellow!

But Emma, this forum/website is set up to ridicule those who seem ignorant and ill informed so as to make the one posting the ridicule as a better and or smarter web surfer. Ask those who run this forum and watch out for their flames!

Allow me to completely generalize.I think the funniest thing about the disc golfers around here is that they are for the most part some of the nicest and friendly people I have met, willing to give of themselves to help others in their community, but when it comes to their local forums, they are rude, quick to judge, and and down right biggest online douche-bags I have ever virtually met.

It is a conundrum.

Since we did such a great job on keeping the course clean at last years event, PGE has decided to let us camp onsite for the ORDGC this year. This extends to Friday and Saturday evening ONLY.

One of the requirements for allowing us to camp was that I agree to have an additional port-a-potty onsite. It is for that reason that I will be asking all campers to pay $10 for the weekend to help me cover the additional cost.

Lastly, ALL CAMPERS will need to pack their trash out themselves. PGE was concerned that we will be leaving trash behind etc, so I promised them we would leave the place as clean as we found it.

I can only hope everyone respects these very reasonable requests, because I can assure that if we do not follow through on our promises it is very likely we will never be allowed to camp at Trojan again.

Now, get those registrations in if you haven't already!!!

So if at all possible, please get yourselves registered as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Jeff

And a question along those lines............what about the use of the BIG fire pit near TC for a Players Party Saturday night? Not sure of the hole number, but there are benches and big concrete firepit.

Hate to burst the bubble, but we can't use that fire pit.

As for "Contained, above ground fires"... I think if we limit their use to the parking lot we're probably fine. However, I never specifically got permission to have any fires, so if we are asked to extinguish them, that is what we will have to do. I think if we are smart and responsible we can slide through if we keep all "Contained, above ground fires" over the asphalt.

This is it... if you have received an invitation to play in the ORDGC and you have failed to contact me regarding playing by now, you are now officially out of luck. The way I see it is that you have had more than enough time to try to make arrangements with me, so I am moving on.

All remaining spots in the event will be filled by people from the wait list, or once that list is exhausted, by people who have expressed an interest in playing.

Can't wait man. Too pumped. Any chance however that camos scuba buddy Dave is interested, or planning for that matter, to comb the lock by Friday afternoon/evening? He could make a twenty spot easy on just the ones dizzy and I lost this week alone, much less all the ones that will be joining us in D. Jones's locker by then, lol.

Thanks for the info, Bob. Looks like the race on Sunday should mostly affect things downtown, especially along Naito Pkwy from Waterfront Park to just south of the Fremont Bridge, and you might be able to beat the race/closures if you were through downtown by 7 (first race 745). Good luck to the guys out there today and hope the lucky guy on the lead card has fun in my spot.

Finally, above all else, I would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave up their weekends to come out and help this event. I say this every time, but there really is no possible way I can run a tournament like this without the support of all of you. So thank you all so much.

In particular I would like to give a shout out to Mike Phillips, who helped make sure all of the results were posted within minutes of the action completing. Also, I cannot thank Jordan Lewis, Chris Graham, Bob Cabal & Jeff Mittl enough. They all hung around after the event to help me break down the course. It is because of you guys that I actually got to sleep at decent hour last night when I very well could have still been out at the park working all night. Thank you!

Thanks to all involved. Specifically Jeff Haggggggerty (and the rest of the course prep crew, don't know who all was involved), for all the work that went into the course. I don't know that I have ever seen a disc golf course look so beautiful! I watch all the DVDs of USDGC and other places that are supposed to have the most amazing courses in the nation, then I play the Trojan ORDGC layout...Not much else could compare with it's seductive beauty, and top tier difficulty. I don't think the ORDGC crew could choose a better venue for the CHAMPIONSHIP than the modified Trojan layout that most of us just got slaughtered by. Hat's off to ya'all.

As for me, I accomplished my goals: 1) No sub 900 rounds, 2) finish the tournament. I'm not happy with my play, but I am satisfied. While I didn't exactly have a "fantastic" time, I'm glad I was out there and I did enjoy myself. Huge thanks to Matt Owens. Without him helping me with my gear, there is no way I would have even finished the first round (and the second round, ugh!), let alone the whole weekend. Thanks man! You're a great caddy, I'll return the favor once my back is 100%.

Cheers to all the competitors who finished the tourney under par. I can see how it's possible, but the odds seem to be heavily stacked against you.

And thanks to everyone for being so damned positive all weekend. I had great cardmates all weekend, everyone of you guys made the experience that much more enjoyable for me.

thank you to all of the volunteers. matt roller, a prince among men as well as a darn fine spotter... you are fine specimen of human... stephen sines and randy & karen and chris graham and rick and nichola and that dude on #1 who was always in the perfect spot to help me aim my shot across the pond, ummm... ashley, craig... amber, genessa, melissa, bob... good golly, there were so many of you and we couldn't have played this tournament without you...

i want to thank my best friend's husband for putting together a mojito madness slumber party for her birthday on friday night, clearly mojitos and very little sleep are a winning combination for me...

... also to my family... my dad and my sister and brother in law and two precious nieces annabel and emmaline... it warmed my heart to have you there. also, annabel imparted some pretty priceless advice that perhaps was integral in bagging the win: "if there's water, just throw the other direction. if you have to throw over the water, just throw really far." brilliant!!!

and to the gals i played with... it was a very nice vibe and that's why i had such a good groove on the whole weekend...

SPLASH! $#@#*_$#@&* GIBSON! YOU #@()*%#! I MEAN HAGERTY!

Finest moment? I guess if we factor in that I didn't just start hucking discs straight into the lake until my bag was empty, it certainly wasn't my worst moment...

that dude on #1 who was always in the perfect spot to help me aim my shot across the pond, ...

That dude on #1 was Zaq Jones, who came up all the way from Coos Bay (go Pirates) with Scotty Withers. He COULD have caddy for Scotty or spectated but chose to volunteer not for one but TWO days. :bowing: Thanks again Zaq!

To ALL of the the volunteers you guys know how I feel...........you all ROCK! I ask and there you are giving your time to help make Disc Golf what it is here in the great NW. Many thanks to all of you!

My favorite quote of the weekend can be attributed to Mrs. "The Brit", Genesa Prictor (she should have her own nick name, like maybe "Gen Rocks):

"I love everything about disc golf except playing it". You are welcome in Tourney Central anytime young lady. :yay:

1 - Plays from the road onto the peninsula, so you are forced to lay up in the landing zone by the corner of the parking lot to have a look through the opening to throw your 2nd shot through the trees across the water to the basket.

2 - a nice easy straight shot along the berm that slopes down to water on the left, long and long right.

3 - instead of playing to the regular basket the pin is on the back end of the first grass island in the parking lot. oh, and the grass by the regular pin is all OB, you have to lay up before the path or make it onto the island to be in bounds.

4 - across the road from the last basket and plays down the road to reg 16's basket. road ob with shule right, left over train tracks and long straight.

5 - reg 17's tee plays to reg 18's basket with shule right and ob road left.

6 - new hole with 1st drive avoiding ob path and beyond left and long and shule right to give you a look at the over the water 2nd shot that also has to clear that dang path that winds around the inlet.

7 - 450' open shot with water ob right and road ob left to reg 1's pin. one thing about that water is if there is any wind at the course, it blows hardest on this hole...

8 - reg 1's tee to basket inside fenced square, if you are out of reg 1's fairway you had better be inside the square to avoid ob.

(reg hole 2 is not used)
9 - reg hole 3 with path and beyond ob that comes in from the left and circles behind the pin and continues right.

10 - tees from the fisherman's pad by the water and goes to a pin across the inlet with water ob left and that same damn path ob right. very narrow fairway and possible wind make this hole a delight.

11 - reg hole 5 but with ob long and that damn path left again.

12 - reg hole 6 but with that damn path ob right.

13 - reg hole 7 with tee pulled and placed on very small green with that damn path ob right and that water ob in front of the pin.

14 - reg hole 8. hard to improve on perfection.

15 - reg tee 9 but basket is move behind all the trees with ob water right behind pin.

16 - tee from road across water past reg 10 all the way to reg 11 pin. lots of ways to go ob on this hole.

17 - reg 12 tee but the pin is moved to deep placement so the hole has two shots over ob water left and path ob right.

18 - a tight fairway with ob TC left and shule right that opens up after tree screen to a basket in the middle of the horseshoe pits.

Holes you can throw it in the water

Hole 11 (regular 5), you can reach the water if your upshot hyzers out too badly. Also, bad roller drives on 9 (regular 3) can dunk, but the grass is quite long right now, with a better chance to stop that errant shot. - Anonymous

well if we take crazy shots into account you could get it in the water on 4 (reg 16) if you tried hard enough...or if you went way long on the upshot on hole 5 (reg 18)...or clung on to/early released the disc on hole 8 (reg 1 tee)

I just can't come up with a way to get wet on hole 18...unless you fall down on the drive and throw it backwards off the tee...:chinscratch:...i've seen it done, just not at that tee.

Ok so I haven't been on the forum in a bit so I'm slow to respond, but "ahhhh. [blush]" Thanks, Bob. Appreciate the shout out. I truly do love coming out to these events and hanging at TC. Disc golfers are awesome! (...even if I don't understand the allure of the game itself :wink2:)
