View Full Version : Lunchtime League: 2011 Season Kicks Off Monday, May 16th!

Yep... starting it a bit earlier this year because... well... I can. :)

Almost everything that you know and love about Lunchtime League will be the same this year with the following exceptions:

1. Ace Pot will not be capped. While this led to issues in the past with regulars not getting in, once this year's Ace Pot exceeds $150, we will do registration not based on first-come, first-served but based on how many weeks you have attended. For example, week 4 of the season we have an ace pot at $164. Those who have attended the previous three weeks will have top priority to enter. Those who have attended two of the previous three will have second priority. Those who have attended one will have next and those who show up for the first time will fill out our field.

2. The church has stated that dinner will be a more regular thing this season than in seasons' past. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to the Greater Portland Bible Church for their continued support of this league as well as disc golf in general.

3. We will cap the field at 80 players and we will be playing two additional holes every week! After playing hole 3 and prior to playing hole 4, we will have two additional holes in the parking lot - a la the Ice Bowl layout. Hole 3a will play towards teepad 9 from the parking lot. Hole 3b will play back towards teepad 4 to an island green surrounded by OB.

As usual, this will be a handicapped league which costs $5 for entry. There will be an optional $1 ace pot. Sign-ups in the beginning of the year will be 5pm-5:30pm with player's meeting at 5:45pm and tee shortly thereafter.

Hit me with your questions and comments.

Still 10 best as now you'll have 16 weeks which will leave 6 throw away weeks? I think you should make it 12 or 13 best weeks.

Sam

12 best - 3/4ths of the year.
Your handicap for last year will not be used but divisions from last year will determine people's handicaps to start the season this year.

I was just wondering if possibly this year there might be separate handicaps for the ladies to start off the season. It seems like we are really completely out of it for the first few sessions because we are assigned basically men's handicaps. For example an advanced man and advanced women are at significantly different levels. Anyway with the number of ladies who have been participating seems like it would make sense.

I totally dropped the ball on this. I will discuss with Gawain tomorrow and we will see what we can do. Spreadsheet might not allow us to do anything like this, after all, but I will check. :)

If a ladies handicap for the first two sessions cannot be added at least maybe the ladies could be assigned the lowest possible men’s handicap. Can't remember what that is, rec or novice maybe. Anyway it would be nice for the ladies to have a chance to cash the first couple of times because the way it is now there really is no chance. Either way I hope to make many of the Lunchtime league events this summer. With my schedule this summer this will probably be the only weekly I make on a regular basis. Thanks you you guys for putting on one of the leauges around :yay:

Great turnout last night. 58 people showed for week 1 and the weather cooperated nicely.

Harrison Hogan got our first ace of the year - nailing one of the added holes for a nice $50 pick up.

Doug Saulter had the hot round of the night shooting a blistering -9, 33 to set the course record and to win the night taking home $42. Josh Petit shot a -4, 38 to take home $25 and second place. Keith Downing shot an E, 42 to take third and $19. Full results are available on the Yahoo! groups page.

See you next week! Ace pot back to $0.

A RULE CHANGE FOR THIS WEEK:

The sidewalk that is out of bounds on hole 4 but was in bounds on hole 3A will be out of bounds for all holes. To be "in", you must clear the sidewalk entirely.

Also there was some confussion as to whether a disc is good if it is leaning on a curb or just touching. I was under the impression that it had to be leaning to be considered good. If it touched the curb it would not be good, but you would take your next shot where it touched. Is this correct?

Cindy :)

Sam
May 23rd, 2011, 02:06 PM
The rule:
If the disc is touching the curb it is in.

The test is simple:
If you can slide your disc before it touches the curb, it is out of bounds. If, however, you cannot slide your disc any closer to the curb, it is in-bounds.

And yes... I know that this is harder to interpret... but them's the course rules.

Will YOU be taking the money home?

Come out tonight for week four of Lunchtime League!

Sam
June 7th, 2011, 04:45 PM
And no one hit the ace... $165 sitting there, now. Looking at going well over $225 next week. And why? 75 PLAYERS SHOWED UP LAST NIGHT!!

That's right... biggest turnout of the year last night led to our first ghost group, as well. I think it went pretty well and we got done golfing with plenty of light left.

Albert Ricker took the big money last night shooting just a -2. How does that work when there four scores that were lower than this? Handicap, baby! All you need to do to win in this league is continue to improve.

The four rounds that were better than Albert's belonged to season leader Shane Johnson (37 - 2nd place, $29), Albert's brother Brian Riley (38 - 10th place, $9), Doug Saulter (39 - 35th place, $0) and Xander Waibel (39 - 20th place, $5). Not to worry... These guys are amassing HUGE handicaps with the smallest among those four being a whopping 6.42 (Brian Riley). Saulter's 8.35 still leads the pack but Shane Johnson gets a real handicap next week at 7.75.

Xander continues to lead the overall but we have a new contender in the top 5, Vince Epker. Vince's solid play this season has moved him into 2nd place. Doug Saulter fell to 3rd. Mike Myers is in 4th and Andy Haskell is in 5th.

Three CTPs were handed out - thanks to Kyle Rakoz, Disc Golf or Die, Xander Waibel for donating. Hole 1 was a bag of goodies DGOD threw together (stickers, mini, etc) - won by Xander. Hole 3B was a bag of goodies I threw together with Xander's aid (towel, woman's small shirt, two minis) - won by Tree Sines. I am sure he will look awesome in that shirt, by the way. Hole 7 was a mini donated by Kyle Rakoz for FORE - won by Mark Gardner.

Year to date we have raised $233 for the Trophy Fund.

Unclaimed Money:
Justin Hiatt $5
Michael Cooksley $4
Jerimie Lankins $5
Jacob Rogers $6
Aaron Kinyon $7
Corey Crocchiolo $4
Dusty Adkins $4
Ben Blechman $4
Ward Stroud $5
Patrick Darr $5
David Smith $5
Vince Epker $5
Robert Byram $6
Michael Gordon $6
Kailyn Cripe $7
Logan Miller $8
Nicholas Johnson $8
Justin Ruljancich $13

Sam

Ace Pot sits at $165. If we get 75 people out and 65 add to it, we are looking at $230. Sign-ups from 5-5:45.

New rule: If you bring a $20 bill, you will be charged a $1 administration fee which will be added to the Trophy Fund. Please bring correct change.

Thanks! See ya out there!

Some interesting Lunchtime League facts from 2011 season:

164 different players have played this season.

5 people have played all 10 weeks this season: Andy Haskell (league leader), Sam Gibson, Matt Anderson, Mat Owens and Ben Gibson.

We are AVERAGING 64.9 players every week.

78 players attended last night, setting a Lunchtime League all-time record for attendance.

The biggest winning $ ever given out to first place was given out last night, finally cresting the $50 mark at $50 exactly.

4 aces have been hit in league play this year, though 2 were by the same guy in the same round. Payouts for the three paying ace pots were $50, $223, $124.

And, oh yeah... the info everyone should be drooling over... The ace pot currently sits at $203 before next week's registration. I am guessing it will be ~$275 next week.

See ya next Monday!

Sam
August 1st, 2011, 11:23 PM
So glad I didn't promote the $203 ace pot. 81 people showed tonight. Yes, that would be one past the limit. How do I turn a former champion away when he is a couple of minutes late - following a weekend at Whistler's? I couldn't. Get there earlier, Babuka!! :)

I will post updated stats soon. At this point, I am waiting on the Excel Master to make sure that the spreadsheet is working correctly with the adjustments made this year. I am pretty sure that I will be winning when Gawain is done with the tweaks.

i like how we talk about moving the sport forward... all over the forum... but this lack of care toward detail and overall laziness when it comes to ORGANIZING disc golf events and leagues is kindof sad. and its not just lunchtime league...

Dear League Organizers,

We greatly appreciate everything you do and have ever done and will do for the disc golfing community. having said that...
youre pissing off the league members. either do the things you SAY youll do, or step down and let someone else do it right. i am saying WE because i have heard the same things from mulitple people and am tired of hearing it. when you SAY you will do something, you should do it. i could care less about the score or standings. i dont like being led on and lied to. on or off the course.

That seem's a little harsh.

S-
That seems like a cop-out reply.

TDs at weeklies have a wide range of levels of comittment.
LL by no means has the worst structure....
I feel Sam needed the constant pushing because....
at first he posted relevent info in this thead and posted scorses fairly regularly. As the season progresses- not so much.
And when he seems to have so much time to devote to other issues- then it becomes a problem.

X,

I have no idea who you are... never seen you at my DABNEY DOUBLES - 10 YRS AND COUNTING. I think you don't need to lump all TD's together.

Oh by the way what league are you running in the Portland area, how long have you been throwing it, how many people attend YOUR league, and what are your payouts and finals ?????????? If you don't know how hard it is to run and organize a league... I think you need (as Sam would probably say) STFU!

TD - THE DABNEY DOUBLES

hi kevin,

i have heard great things about dabney doubles! im a new player who is still trying to figure out the time and travel to get to events around town. sorry for lumping you all together. and trust me someday i wish to organize some disc golfing events of my own. and i hope i can organize events that are fair and fun for all. im sure i will find out how time consuming and difficult it will be.
scott hill- you are an amazing td! keep it up buddy.

in my post i should have put "you are pissing me off" and put it at the end. if you take that part out i wasnt calling out any individuals or even saying that the majority of league organizers are dumb or anything "harsh" i was mainly saying i dont like being led on and lied to. there is no reason for someone to say they will do something when they have no intention of doing it. just ... dont say it. that goes for everything not just disc golf events.

i will not STFU. ever. i care for this sport and the people that play it too much.

i would like to end by saying. i love lunchtime league, and most all leagues i attend. it is a pleasure to play with the people that come out week after week. sam and andy and all of the other organizers that run LL i consider my friends. nothing about that had changed to my knowledge, i apologize to anyone that may have taken wrong meaning from my words, i meant no harm. i love you all.

ill be at the NAAC this weekend and at LL on monday if you want to come talk to me, ill be around.

i just wanted to see that darn PDF so bad... :bricks:

Kevin, that seemed unnecessarily harsh. It seems you don't quite know who Xander is...

Anyway, I think the biggest mistake that was made here by Sam was setting a precedent the first half of the season by posting scores consistently, then falling out in the last few weeks, when people start to really care. I know there weren't necessarily promises made, but even in the spirit of good shit talking, the scores should be there for us to see and analyze for any league, and since they need to be updated either way, it makes sense for them to be public.

I believe HH has whittled the bat down to a toothpick. I was reviewing Sam's early season posts and weekly updates and remembering how much I looked forward to seeing them and the standings AND results each week. They set a precedence we came to expect.

Still- I will say that of the weekly tournaments I'm aware of, Sam is definitely one of the top ten TDs.

Hit all of the CTPs... I don't care.

Still taking suggestions about what to do with the ace money. At present, I am considering two alternatives if no one hits an ace tonight:
1) seed next year's week 1 ace pot
2) add this money (~$120-$130) to the money raised for baskets from the trophy fund

Suggestions?

Done. A lot to say but I am still exhausted. 204 unique players this year. With 85 showing up last night, that was enough to bump us to an average of 68.05 players each week. I still need to add everything up but it looks like we raised about another $1000 for baskets at Lunchtime between the trophy fund, people donating their winnings back, the disc sales and more. By my calculations, that should get us to about 8-9 of the 15 baskets we seek.

Phew! See you all next May... or... rather... this Friday night for Lunchtime Doubles!!
