Don't throw the wraith. Too fast for a beginner. Go to the meet to play section and announce where you plan to play next and when. Someone that knows a bit more than you will more than likely be able to show you a few things. Search youtube for disc golf instructional videos. Enjoy.

I agree with Redfive. Put away the wraith for now, and focus on controlling your shark, cobra, and aviars. Don't worry about distance yet; just focus on a smooth, flat release. Videos will help, but nothing will be more helpful than getting out and learning first hand. Above all, have fun.

Welcome to the forum and to disc golf!

Play catch in the park with a friend. Use a midrange or a putter. Don't mess around with a driver (Wraith) until you can throw 200+ feet with a midrange.

Don't worry about throwing for distance when playing catch. Focus first on giving the disc lots of spin (snap). Distance will follow.

Try to throw the disc straight, then learn to curve it to the right and the left. Learn to throw with a backhand and forehand. And play around with rollers too. They can really be a big help at any level of play.

Even if you've played a lot of frisbee, expect to spend a year learning to throw a basic golf shot.

Exactly what he said! Play with others who know how to play.

Oh, and you'll hear of all sorts of different discs people recommend you throw. But don't worry, the Discraft XL in Z plastic is the one!

Resist the temptation to buy every shiny piece of plastic you come across. You won't notice a lot of difference from what you are already throwing until you develop snap and technique.

Where are you located? If you want, me and some fellow disc golfers can give you some lessons, for free. I have a bunch of different plastic you can use to see what u like. Even show you some different throwing styles. You can also use this forum to check out some courses located closest to you and meet-up with some local players. Just about every disc golfer at any course is willing to show you the game and teach you the rules. Good luck!!

Still waiting for that snap stuff here. If you need someone to teach you the snapless technique... Well, you probably don't need that.

Hey, I never tried drinking Snapple. Might work. Sometimes when I hyzer off the left side on the drive, and yank off the right on the approach, I just snap. Is that it? Is that snap?

If you're in Portland, there are lots of places to meet up with people. Stumptown's our local organized disc golf club. Check in the Oregon events list in the forum for events. I think there's a clinic in a couple of weeks put on by PSU at Milo Mcgiver park, which would be a good place to learn more.

There are casual events almost every day of the week in Portland. Check the calendar. In about a month or so, the weeklies will be starting. Every night of the week, there's at least one weekly event. You don't have to play every week, so you can try out different ones to see what you like. Many are random double events. Doubles is a great place to start, since you automatically have someone on your team who'll be interested in giving you tips and ideas.

Volunteering at tournaments is also a great way to learn. You get to see a variety of styles, plus see how the experts play. The Beaver State Fling is in June, and is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer.

If you have any questions, or would like to meet people, this forum is a terrific way to connect. People are very supportive of new players, because everyone remembers what it was like when they got started, and the people who showed them the ropes.
