View Full Version : Fort Steilacoom Open **A-tier** July 2 & 3, 2011

Rideout
March 7th, 2011, 10:28 AM
The Fort Steilacoom Open will be held on July 2 & 3, 2011.

Course details and maps will be posted by early to mid June. We will be playing the Northwest & Southeast courses with some nice little adaptations included.

The courses should be well marked and laid out by Tuesday June28th. Temp basket placements will be marked with a marker post which should be very easy to find with the course maps.

All amateur players will be receiving a Revolution Mini Bag. I’ve had one for years and it works excellent as both my back-up bag at tourneys and my family travel bag (you know, just in case I can stop by a new course during the family vacation, but don’t want it to look like I’m seriously planning to throw).

Registration for the FSO will open in early April. The field will be limited to 144 players (72 ams & 72 pros).

If you would like to be a volunteer for the FSO, please contact:
Mike Rideout
mikerideout@challengediscgolf.com
(253) 224-5491

I need 10-15 weekend volunteers. Each volunteer will receive a player’s pack.

I’m happy to say that Ryan Gwillim will once again be my co-TD running the tent operations. Like last year, we plan on having scores posted before the players get home (except Saturday afternoon/evening – dinner comes first).

The FSO will be a Vibram Open qualifier in 2011. Pro Open players wishing to qualify for the Vibram Open will need to pay a $10 opt-in fee before their first round.

More info will become available in the next month or two.

Of the three colored stacks, the tallest and the shortest are the Champ Katanas. The tall stack makes up the heavy Katanas 170+ & the short stack makes up the light Katanas 167-169.

The other tall stack of color is made up of Gummy Rhynos.

I will be bringing a handful of this plastic to Walla Walla with me; glad to see you're signed up for this one, Killa.

I meant to inquire about the front stack all the way to the right in the picture. The discs near the top are the same color as the other glow molds pictured, but the bottom 2/3rds of the stack is distinctly darker. I'm just wondering what's up with that.

Collegiate disc golf eligibility requirements.

http://ncdgu.com/eligibility

In order to compete for the title of Collegiate Disc Golf Team Champion, each member of the team shall meet the following criteria:

A. Currently registered as a student at an accredited college/university.

B. If the student is also a member of the Professional Disc Golf Association, he/she must maintain amateur status.

Looks like he shot super hot in his first PDGA event! He carded a 1044 rated round along with several 980-990 rounds. He has played a few other tourneys since then and although he did well, I don't think he will be able to hang on to the 1000 rating.

Congrats to him for winning the College Disc Golf Championships and I deff look forward to playing against him in the FSO.

Online registration will stay open until the tourney is filled. As soon as there are 72 amateurs or 72 pros, I'll start a waitlist for either am or pro. As we get within a couple days of the tourney, I'll take players from the waitlist and attempt to balance the two pools to get as many players on the courses as possible.

This gives people an opportunity to talk first hand to someone who knows a lot about Discraft plastic and a chance to throw a whole bunch of the Discraft plastic out into the field.

I’m sure Dave is a great person, but REVOLUTION dropped the ball big time and I don’t see myself ever doing business with them again (I’d still buy a bag from them). Dave at REVOLUTION did not meet the discussed schedule nor did Dave inform me that the schedule wouldn’t be kept. His product is excellent, but I will not put myself into a position again where I’m relying on him to be punctual or even informative.

Anyway, I do appreciate the deal REVOLUTION did give and I’m happy I will receive bags before the tourney.

REVOLUTION is sending me 55 bags (was expecting to have 100 ready to receive printing on the 17th). A few have been promised to volunteers, so I’ll probably have around 50 for the 72 amateur players. I have put together a contact list for the first 45 amateur players that have signed up. If you are one of those first 45, you should receive an email soon, if not, contact me. There are other things I have available for player’s packs and those on the list of the first 45 amateur players will get to choose whether they want one of the bags or one of the other products I have available. Every amateur signing up from here on out will get their choice of player’s pack in the order they signed up.

Man, Steily is looking fantastic right now. Fairways are getting freshly mowed and the sun is finally coming out a little. Lots of info will be coming soon.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Revo. Sadly, you are just the latest in a long line of dissatisfied customers. They may have a quality product, except for the dual pack imo, but their customer service and communication are nothing short of awful.

On a brighter note, the tourney sounds awesome! I have only played FS once, but I absolutely loved it. The two layouts that I played (SW/NE or SE/NW?) definitely had their own flavor, but I really enjoyed them both. I'll be seeing you next year when after I get to know the courses a little better (and when I'm not totally tapped out after 3 A-Tiers).

Best of luck! :biggrin2:

Mike,
just wondering if the layout to the southeast and/or northwest courses are going to be changed for the fso. I keep seeing some stakes out on the southeast course and cant help but think those may be alternate basket placements.

For example is hole 3 going to be over the road with some ob making is an island? Is hole 13 going to be moved about 60 feet further and to the left of the orginal placement?

Just like to be a little more prepared if there will be changes.

By the end of the day today –

I should have both courses completely flagged. I will put a flag on each tee pad with the course initials & hole number. I will also put a flag on each basket or temp location with the course initials & hole number.

The hole number will follow the map. These holes are organized differently than normal – so make sure you use the map. The course specs will explain all necessary details for each hole.

Map (https://store.northwestsignup.com/fliers/FSO%20map%202011.pdf)

I just adjusted the course specs. Sorry, I hope not too many of you have already printed a copy. I changed the info on SE 6. I took out all the weird ob rules and simplified it to be a little more uniform. I hope this ends up creating less confusion in the long run.

A flagged stake with ribbons will be in the location of the basket position.

Three of the REVO MINI bags that were given out didn't get their hard plastic insert. If you are the owner of one of these bags with no insert from the tourney, please get in touch with me and I'll get you hooked up.

Thanks to all that attended. I had a lot of help from the club and a crew of volunteers that made all the holes run smoothly. Seriously, I had more volunteers than I have ever had before and that is what will continue to help this event (any event) become more and more successful. Thanks needs to go to Kurt Bayne, Sumo, & Justin for sleeping at the course in order to keep the temp baskets and tourney central safe. Mark Kilmer for organizing work parties and then just showing up with his own mower until the fairways were spectacular.

Thanks to Jay & Des Reading for giving me a lot of helpful feedback on the tournament. That clinic was pretty cool too.

I simply can't run this event without Ryan Gwillim, Kathy Rideout (awesome wife), & Rob Smith. These three are an essential part of the Fort Steilacoom Open team. Don't get me wrong, every job related to the event is important, but this event wouldn't run on time without these guys. It would be sloppy without them. Ryan Gwillim keeps that tent running sharp - I don't know how he gets those cards counted and organized so fast. Kathy checks every single player in and gives me clear data on every little thing that changes or needs attention - then she helps with anything needed the rest of the weekend. Rob took on the ultra confusing tasking of managing this year’s player's packs - wow, three different options depending on when you signed up (due to the REVOLUTION fiasco) and he did it flawlessly while amateur players were lined up growling to get through as fast as they could.

I owe you guys all the success of the tournament.

Thank You
