View Full Version : Disc Golf Respect

Rebecca

I started a new thread because I didn't want this to hamper the Alton Baker thread.

As most of you know, we had a public meeting last night about Alton Baker
A very valid question was asked by one of our members. Instead of letting the speaker answer, a few newer disc golfers started to all talk loudly, disrespectful and all at once. I simply said and I quote, "Let's show a little respect and talk one at a time.".
I heard a few rumblings underneath a few peoples breath and that was that.
I received the nastiest email I have received in my entire life today from one of the disc golfers on Facebook. I was called many names that I will not repeat and I was also threatened and told to watch my back. The email was sent from "Facebook User." This was all stemming from me telling people to be respectful.
So I hope whoever sent me that email, is reading this.

First, everyone wants a new course but they show up acting immature and with so much animosity. I wouldn't want you to be in a park with my children. How do you think outsiders would view that behavior?

Second, we are not going to get anywhere being disrespectful and acting like this is owed to us. The city doesn't owe us anything.

Third, and this is directed to the coward who sent me that email. You don't know me. I try to be nice to everyone and I would help anyone if I can. I work harder than people realize for the greater good of disc golf.

I do not take your email lightly--- you are a coward!, You couldn't even sign your name. How dare you threaten me.......I won't be watching my back because I have friends who have my back. So I hope you're bragging about your cowardly email because it will get back to me. Then you'll be the one who will be sorry for even the thought of writing it.

This has got to be the guy sitting in the very back who mumbled angry and disrespectful things all night loud enough that he wanted others to hear. After you asked for respect he had some choice words. I was shooting him looks throughout the meeting, but he never looked back at me. He was not someone I recognized, but I would recognize him if I saw him. Big Brian was next to me and saw and heard the douche too. Before the meeting ended the douche grabbed about ten of the Clif bars that were set out for people and left.

You run into this kind of angry, douchebag, litterbug, vandalizing disc golfer sometimes out on a course, but I didn't expect to see one openly sabotaging a public meeting where we are trying to get a new course approved. The whole time he was clearly pissed that the course wouldn't just magically appear and be free for him. He had nothing constructive to say and was radiating malevolent douchebaggery. I was actually really pissed off the whole time but I didn't want to ask the guy during the meeting to knock it off, and he left while the first part of the night was winding down.

Somebody has to know who this guy is. Early thirties, longish light brown hair (ponytail?), tan hoodie, total douchebag. Sitting in the back row. Did I mention he was a douchebag?

Wow! In Seattle we would be so lucky to have new courses in the works. Sounds like a severe case of Douchebaggery... Disc Golfers need to come together and work for the common good... It's really hard to imagine someone that is a disc golfer that is not all the way on board. Where is Alton Baker anyway?

seriously, who does not have rebecca's back?

... but, even more seriously, behavior like this can be seriously detrimental to the cause of more disc golf everywhere and is nothing but entirely unacceptable... nip it in the bud, homies. nip it...

I feel ya rebecca! I really have a hard time going to my city park to golf, because I don't want walkers, runners, etc. associating me with those guys who think that way, and more over I can't stand them being associated with disc golf! Plus if the weather is good usually have my two young children with me and I really don't want them seeing that!!! One good thing is that it helps me make the drive to whistlers(not like i really need a good reason to make the 20 minute drive. I know we don't really know each other, but the whole whistlers misfit crew has your back too!

That being said though don't think for a minute that I wouldn"t be there for her. :cop:

So it was a Facebook message or an email? Either way that's really creepy that he found you.

One thing that I've learned over the years is that the people who are the most hateful and would call you names and such is that these people hate themselves so much that they need to do something to you to make themselves feel better. This person probably has a pretty crummy life if I had to guess. Don't let it get you down or angry because this is what they want, just ignore it and go on with the good things you are doing and stay positive. Thinking about getting back at someone like this is a losing thought process as well and will only bring you down to this person's level. Smile and move on. :) :) :)

But I am pretty sure if someone threatens you through facebook you can report it to facebook and they have to atleast block that person from accessing facebook as it violates the agreement you make when you start an account. It sounds like this kind of D-bag probably gets off on drama and if you get his name and email blocked from facebook I am sure he will not be as able to play his internet troll games... perhaps this will snowball into him losing interest in playing his real life troll games... Just saying prosecute him through facebook... if nothing else he will have fun explaing to people why he cant use his real name as his face book account ;)

I specifically remember when that dude spoke and literally putting my head in my hands.

I love Eugene, and I love our culture and history, but sometimes I am so shocked to see the level of unprofessionalism and general lack of intelligence within a community that's seemingly full of "educated" people. I would imagine that this person is a "taker" and not much of a "giver" and it scares me to think that the city of Eugene is going to be nice enough to give us a course for a few years only to have self-centered slack-jawed yokels show up and spread their negativity all over our fairways.

This is the exact reason that I agree with Hyzer Bomb's statements about the need for education on the course. Everyone that plays on this course needs to have the rundown on why it's here, how long it will be here, and what the consequences are if certain things are done. :cop:

Reba!!! i'm sorry you have to take the brunt of this persons negativity! But in a way i'm also glad that this happened. Being aware of douchebaggery is the first step to eradicating it. And this dude obviously has absolutely no idea how strong of person you are.

Hang in there sister! http://www.panicfreaks.org/images/emoticons/vibe.gif

So here's a mild counterweight to Rebecca's tale. This involves gaining respect.

Last Saturday morning I was talking to my wife's running coach, Kathy Bellamy, just before a 5K race. She had been down to Alton Baker earlier that morning to coach some of her other runners and, as luck would have it, it was the same morning as the Williamette Series Food Bowl tourney.

The subject of DG came up and she effuses: "I just saw them setting up for a tourney down there. Those guys were great. Somebody came through the parking lot a little too fast, where my runners were warming up, and three or four golfers jumped all over the guy and told him to slow down. We need more of that kind of attitude in our parks."

I witnessed this event first hand. It was very embarrassing to say the least. I was just finishing a great conversation with the head of the running club (?name) and some other runners about the use of the park, when the DB in a big white truck came tearing into the lot. The runners all said, "that phucktard is not a golfer, golfers don't act like that". We were embarrassed to point out that he had a basket in the back of his truck and was indeed representing the "disc golf" community. Very sad and embarrassed; I was.

First off, Rebecca you rock and you know it. I'm so sorry to hear about such douchebaggery. If he physically threatened you, even over facebook, you can report it to the cops. I know with emails they can trace the IP address from the email. I'm assuming that facebook would also provide that information for the police if someone has been threatened. I know you might not want to take it there but you can, and it sounds like the guy needs someone to set him straight.

I saw a story about a guy tonight on the news who threatened and describe injuries he would inflict on a women on FaceBook and he was arrested. He was arraigned and is going to trial. If found guilty he will serve ten years in prison, not jail, prison!
