Anybody else out there think it's a good idea to start a Northwest Disc Golf News league on the above website?

Because I think it's an awesome idea!

Do it, or else the ninja will get you!

Ryan Gwillim ran a league a couple of years ago. I was thinking about reviving it this year, but there seemed to be little interest.

Ryan Gwillim ran a league a couple of years ago. I was thinking about reviving it this year, but there seemed to be little interest.

I'm not familiar with how Ryan organized it, but the website lays out the rules and keeps score automatically. My only question now is whether or not to make the league public or private (which require an invitation code that could be posted here).

I think the cool aspect of the website is that it assigns point values to players on the national tour. You can only "spend" 70 points to get your four golfers. This way everyone won't be just picking the same players as everyone else.

Not sure why they didn't just have a ratings total like 4100 as the max total rating for your four players.

My only question now is whether or not to make the league public or private (which require an invitation code that could be posted here).

I think this would weigh on whether or not you wanted it to be a private or public league.

via their website:
$9.99 - Up to 15 players
Great for groups of friends.
Costs less than a new disc!

$19.99 - Up to 100 players
Awesome for local clubs!
Costs less than a really expensive disc!

$39.99 - Unlimited players
Great for city/state clubs or vendors.
Costs less than a small automobile!

Seeing as you would probably not get more than 100 people, but more than 15 (maybe?) you could easily invite people to join. You could keep it free and light-hearted, or ask for some $ to join the league an offset some of the cost and the leftover goes to a pot making for something a little more cut-throat. I'm just spitballing here.

Not sure why they didn't just have a ratings total like 4100 as the max total rating for your four players.

We originally had it that way, but found that it was a bit easier to do the math when the numbers were under 100.

Adding up 1018 + 1035 + 1011 ... got a little brain-heavy for me (while testing golfer picks); smaller numbers were a bit more down-to-earth.

We're definitely open to suggestions for future tours if more people think that a max rating cap would be easier to work with.

Thanks for signing up and creating a league, guys. Let us know if you have questions or comments.

Chuck Kennedy
February 18th, 2011, 06:38 AM
Since all of the players selected would likely be over 1000 rating, just drop the 1000 and say the total for the rating amounts over 1000 can't exceed 100 for the four players. But maybe that's too much math? The thing is, those who participate in fantasy leagues are typically decent at math and stats.

Really? :headbang:

This does not surprise me at all based on what I have seen when it comes time to add up 2's 3's and 4's at the end of every tournament round.

Rob Hruska
February 18th, 2011, 06:21 PM
Really? :headbang:

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty handy at the maths. But when it came down to it, having everything up around the 1000 area just seemed unnecessary. It's easier to know what your budget is and what kind of players you can target when the numbers are smaller.

I kind of like Chuck's idea, although I think there would be people picking the odd < 1000-rated golfer for the underdog factor. Probably not a very common use case, but we'd like to allow it.

It's still our first go at this, and I can assure you we'll be adjusting things as we learn more about how players like to use the site.

Kenny, when you created the league, did you make a 15 person league, or a 100 person league? If you made a 15 person league you might want to see if they will let you upgrade it. We're at 10 and I think we have more than 5 more still coming.

Also, if you have a paypal account already, all we need is the email you use to log into said paypal account and we can send you money.

Also (x2), it would be good to have some sort of incentive to keep people involved through the whole season. Have you thought of any sort of payout? I could donate some plastic or something, or maybe try to find someone to sponsor the league? Nothing huge at all, so it would still be just for fun, but something to keep participants' interest piqued enough that they stay involved?

I agree that adding a prize for the winner would be fun and keep people involved. The website rules do stipulate that any prize must be announced prior to the first event and that the prize cannot be based on the number of participants. (i.e. no gambling.) As such, I talked to my wife and she wants to make a donation on behalf of Not For Sale-Kitsap (an organization under the umbrella of Not For Sale, which fights to stop human trafficking and child/slave labor). The donation is Fair Trade Certified chocolate bars to go to the winner of this league.

If anyone else would like to donate prizes, please let me know so that it can be announced prior to the start of the Memorial.

Yeah that has happened to me twice in a row - my picks are not playing. It'd be nice if the setup gave you your top two of four or four of six or something. It's not like espn is updating the active players 30 minutes before hand.

Both Crabtree and Sexton were pulled off the pre-reg list as they withdrew. Unfortunately it was on Friday afternoon for Crabtree so you only saw that if you double checked after 3pm or so that day. Sexton was removed around Tuesday. I wouldn't mind seeing a "substitution" option though, or even a "bench" like other fantasy sports, but maybe just one player.

Hey Kenny,
If you want to run another NWdiscgolf league again I will kick in a disc for payout or even help out with league fees. I had a great time last year competing with people I actually know and would love to do it again.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Sorry I haven't posted again here for a while (yes, I am a slacker:slapface:). Well, I'm back and I'm going to start another fantasy disc golf season for this coming year! I should have the code posted here tomorrow, but start telling your friends that it's coming because it will have an unlimited number of participants.

You can start now by registering at www.playfantasydiscgolf.com

A Northwest Disc Golf News fantasy disc golf league has officially been started. The code for joining the league is KB455UUC.

I have decided to not include the Memorial that starts next week in order to allow more time for people to join before the season starts. Currently the Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup is the first tournament for the season, but it is not 100% sure that this will be the first tournament, so be sure to check back here for updates that will establish the first official tournament.

I want to thank those who have already volunteered to donate some discs for prizes, there will be more information here to follow regarding prizes and to coordinate the donated goods.

If you would like to support with a small donation, you can send money to me via paypal. My e-mail is benj2328@yahoo.com. The set-up cost for this league was reasonable, only $30.

Spread the word and get your friends involved! I'd like to see us get to 100 players!

I decided to start a "Lakewood is Awesome" fantasy league. Open to anyone that cares to join but you'll need the code 53TVPVAV after you sign in. I decided to include all the NT events + available regional events + a couple of others. Please feel free to pass along the code to anyone else you think would like to join this one. Fantasydiscgolf.com (http://playfantasydiscgolf.com/) for all the info.

If you do want to join this one be aware that the Memorial, which starts on Wednesday, is the first event. You'll need to get your picks in by Tuesday midnight if you want to be in the running.

Cheers, Eric

Thanks to those that have joined so far and donated to support this league. Here's a bit of info I hope will help encourage more to play. The tournaments we will use will include Majors, NT events, and some local tournaments. Also, a problem with last year's format has been corrected. If you recall, in some tournaments, players may have been injured or maybe did not shown up to an event they were registered for. This led to a lot of people getting zero points for those players. This year the website allows for designating a substitue pick and for your best 'x' number of players to score out of 'y' number of picks. (For example, pick 6 players and score the best 4 of those.) This should prevent players from recording a bad score for a tournament due to unlucky circumstances.

As a reminder the website is www.playfantasydiscgolf.com, and the code for joining the NWDGN league is KB455UUC.

which divisions are we picking players for?

which divisions are we picking players for?

It varies from tourney to tourney and league to league. For the Lakewood League I set it up for 4 Open players, 2 Pro Women & 2 Pro Masters. If you join the league you can see the schedule I picked etc...

playfantasydiscgolf.com (http://playfantasydiscgolf.com/) code: 53TVPVAV

If you're playing the NWdgnews league that Kenny set up you've got plenty of time to read all the rules and figure it out. If you're joining the Lakewood league that I put together you've got 10 hours from now to get on board. Either way it's fun and free!

Thanks for signing up HyzerBomb, glad to have you on board.

BTW: I saw on the fantasy golf facebook page that Josh Anthon is apparently injured (knee). I don't know if he withdrew or not but something to consider if you picked him.

Other free leagues I am playing.... Gateway Disc Sports, the "Steady" Ed league, Powergrip (memorial only, awesome 1st prize), nwdiscgolfnews.

You got me by 11 in the Lakewood league though, nice work. See you at Lunchtime one of these days.

The first event for the fantasy disc golf season is less than two weeks away. The first event is the Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup. Picks open on May 4th and you'll need to pick 5 Open Men and 2 Open Women, plus one additional Man as a substitute if necessary. Of the 5 men you pick, only the top 4 will be scored for you total. I'm giving 7000 points for the 7 picks (substitute pick doesn't use up any points), for an average of 1000 points per player. As the season progresses, I'd love feedback from everyone about whether or not they feel a good number of points are available to spend.

So you pick players before each event? That's a really good idea. I've played a couple times when you pick at the beginning of the year.. Tough to know who was going to play what except the guys that usually make everything. Made it hard to stay interesting.

Yeah, that's right. No more "team" you hold through the year.

The first fantasy disc golf event is nearing. Don't forget to make your picks! The prizes will be a disc for the top 3 places. Thanks for those that have donated money or discs to help make this possible. Also, thanks to Scott Papa and Hyzer Farm as he will be letting us swap donated discs for ones in his shop. This will allow for the winners to get pretty much any disc they want. Obviously with some retrictions like collectable discs.

I recieved this reply from Fantasy Disc Golf. They should have the scoring problem fixed by Saturday.

Hey Kenny,

I think I figured out what's going on - we've got a bug in Pick M /
Score N leagues on tournaments that we re-scored (which, so far, has
only been the Masters Cup).

I'm going to hold off on applying the fix until probably Saturday to
give me a bit of time to test the fix and make sure it works right.

I'll put an announcement on your message board and on FB as well to
let people know what's up. I'll also shoot you an email when I roll
out the fix (probably Saturday evening). Thanks again for the
observation, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,

Rob
