runnaman
January 27th, 2011, 07:51 PM
The 2nd Annual Western Oregon University Disc Golf Club Fundraiser presented by Phd Productions!!

When: March 12
Where: Dallas City Park
Why: To raise funds for the WOUDGC and future trips.

Last year we had a full turnout and hopefully we can do the same this year.

The format will be the same: 2 rounds of 15 holes (possibly 18). However, there will be different holes this year. Dallas was upgraded from 9 holes to 18, but some of the holes are pretty short so we'll be modifying the course a little bit.

Tentative Schedule (depends on 15 or 18 hole course):
8:00-8:45: Check in
9:00-9:15: Players' Meeting
9:30: Round 1
12:00: Lunch
1:00: Players' Meeting
1:15: Round 2
4:00: Awards, Ring of Fire.

I'll be posting more information on here as we get closer to tournament time.

Mark your calendars cause it's sure to be a fun time.

Registration:
To register, just fill out the form provided below and send it to the address on the form.

Options for registration:
send in registration form and money
send in registration form and pay day-of

There's no reason we can't BOTH redeem scrip, is there? Don't more vendors mean more choices for the players, meaning MORE FUN? I'm ready, willing, and able (to share)....

I also need some ideas for how to do registration. Was everyone ok with mail in registrations last year and are you ok with doing that again this year?

Any preference? ^^

If not, I think I'll just do mail-in.

Look for the registration form in the next couple of days.

Yeah, that's can still change, but we're shooting for.

Registration: 8:00-8:45
Players Meeting: 9:00-9:15
Round 1: 9:15

I'll add that to the flyer and update.

Thanks

Registration is here!!

The registration form and the flyer are now both in PDF form and available in the First Post.

I encourage you to print off some flyers and post them around. If things go well tomorrow when I go to the course, we might have an 18 hole course instead of a 15 hole course, so we can have more people.

runnaman
February 2nd, 2011, 09:21 PM
well, I checked out the course again today, and if we can get the fields again like last year, we should have 18 good holes. However, it will mean that we will need 5 temporary baskets. 3 temporary for 15 holes. Let me know if you can bring one.

Also, if you find my Yellow 11x Eagle-L with an Eagle dye on after hole 2, I lost it throwing from 2 tee to 3 basket.

runnaman
February 3rd, 2011, 12:04 AM
Here's the proposed layout for the tournament.

Green means it's original, Red is added for the tournament. Circles are baskets, little lines are tees.

This is the 18 hole layout. If we decide to go 18 holes, we will remove holes 4, 12, and 13.

Edit: This is no longer the layout. See post #51

I should be going back to Dallas either today or tomorrow to finalize the course. If it all gets approved, it'll 18 holes with 1-3 par 4s.

Registration forms are in the first post.

runnaman
February 8th, 2011, 07:13 PM
Played the (possible) tournament layout today and shot a 43 (15 holes). Hole 14 is about 600' and will most likely be a par 4.

I really like the layout. I might add one more hole, but I'm not sure yet. Tees will be a mix of concrete and grass/dirt. I tried to move as many tees as possible to concrete.

Works fine for me. Let me know if it persists and I can try to fix it.

On another note, I played the course again today and shot a 44 (15 holes). I'm thinking about making a couple of changes, but if all goes well, the course will be the 15 noted on the map.

Also, I got an email from Valarie Jenkins today and she said she is going to try to send something for the raffle again this year.

Only 31 days left to register!!!

runnaman
February 11th, 2011, 10:42 AM
Would anyone be interested in online signups? I can do it through discgolfscene.com

The only problem with that is I can only withdrawal the money in groups of 10 registrations and I need the money to get stuff for the tournament. But if enough people would like that option I can set it up.

Until then, only 29 days left to register. If you are planning on registering, please send in your registration form asap.

Thank you

I feel kind of lame for Quintuple Posting, but if you are unsure about signing up for this because of money, I'll let you send in your registration form and pay day of. I don't like doing this, but I need registration forms so I know how many people to plan for. Ideally, I won't have to accept day of registrations.

I'll put this in the OP as well: Option for registration: pre-register and pay day of.

Here's a pretty cool update:

Phd Productions has stepped up and became our Title Sponsor! The tournament is now called the 2nd Annual WOUDGC Fundraiser Tournament presented by Phd Productions.

If a mod could change the title of this thread to add "presented by Phd Productions" that would be great.

Also, the course got approved today so it looks like we might get a full 18 holes in! The only thing is, this means we need more temporary baskets. So if you have one that we can use, please let me know so I can get the course plan finalized. Thank you.

Also also, there is only 25 days left to register. Remember, you can mail in your entry form and pay day of.

Please please please no practice weight baskets (if we can avoid it). I have 2 full weight baskets, but I won't have room for them along with the Pro Shop. If someone from, Portland has room and could transport them, we could use them. Anyone?

runnaman
February 16th, 2011, 09:07 AM
Trust me, if all I can find is practice weight baskets, we'll only do 15 holes. Which I'm fine with, but if we can get enough baskets for 18, that's cool too.

For the 15 hole course we need 2 temp baskets, and for 18 holes, we need 5 temp baskets. I already have 1.

Last year we had 6 portable baskets set up throughout the park unlocked and we didn't have a problem. If you would like yours to be locked, you'll need to bring your own lock and I'll try to put it next to a tree or something to lock it to.

Thanks, looking forward to getting registration forms.

Phd Productions said that along with their Title Sponsor donation, they will also be sending a box of their Pocket Discs. We will use these for a putting and/or distance competition and then they will be awarded to the winners and used in the raffle since we won't have enough for everyone to get one in their player packs.

So get your registration forms in. Everyday this event gets a little cooler. I might be going to Dallas again today to scout out the 3 additional holes to make it a full 18 hole course.

Got a package today from Nate Doss and the Jenkins. They graciously donated two discs (one signed by Nate and Val, and one signed by Avery), two keen wallets, stickers, and some minis. All of this will be going into the raffle. So you don't want to miss this tournament, if for nothing else, the raffle.

- Dion has said he will donate some goodies for the raffle
- He will also be there selling discs and redeeming scrip along with Gawain and Tim Malone
- Phd Productions has donated 24 Pocket Discs which will be used in a Pocket Disc Putting Contest at the end of the tournament. They are also the title sponsor.
- Nate Doss, Valerie Jenking, and Avery Jenkins donated a couple discs along with some other Keen items. (See above)

And just like that, there are only 9 days left until the tournament. The extended forecast shows only a 50% chance of rain, but hopefully that will go down to 0% in the next few days.

There are still 50 spots open. That means I need to get 5-6 registrations a day to fill.

Again, you can pre-register and pay day of. Just send me a message with your registration info.

Today, I am getting the scorecards, scrip, and tee signs printed. And I'm also picking up some donations.

Random question to everyone: would anyone be available to take some video? I'll have people taking pictures, but I thought it would be cool to have some video too. Preferably some random shots of the first round and the lead card the second round.

Let me know if you're up to the task, thanks.

Also, I still need 3 baskets. This is much more important than video.

Of course, my passenger gets to help with pro shop, and basket deployment/pickup, in lieu of gas money. Thanks in advance; and I look forward to carpooling with you.

There is still room to sign up. I would suggest that if you are mailing in you registration form and money, that you do that on Monday to ensure it gets in time. Otherwise, just send me a PM with your registration info and I'll get you signed up.

A few more people registered today, but there is still lots of room left.

I picked up some gift cards from Play It Again - Corvallis and the First Alternative Coop yesterday, so those will be in the raffle.

It also looks like we will most definitely have rubber pads for most of the holes and the rest will be on concrete, so no natural tees!!!

You don't want to know what a ring of fire is... the day you find out, you need to break up with your partner and go to the doctor....

oops wrong ring of fire...

everyone lines up 30-33 feet around in a circle around a basket and putt in various styles to win prizes etc etc...

I've actually been thinking about it and since it is a fundraiser, I'm going to pass on the ring of fire and use the prizes in the raffle. It's still up in the air, but as of right now, I think we won't do that.

We will have a putting contest though using Phd Productions Pocket Discs. I got the package today from them and they sent me 24 discs to use and give away.

You could always ask for a donation to play in the ring of fire... that would help bring in more funds versus a putting contest, and more fun in my opinion. Just my two cents from the peanut gallery.:chinscratch:

The putting contest is for something else. It will be using the Pocket Discs because they are our main sponsor. I'll think about the ring of fire and make a decision day-of. It also depends on how many donations we get.

Hey Chase,
Sorry that I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I very rarely check my old DiscGolfOregon3 email or NwDiscgolfnews account. DiscGolfOregon is no more, for various reasons . . not sure where to start, but mostly due to lack of dedication from needed parties. DiscGolfOregon will not be donating or attending this year, but I am jealous of everyone that does show up!
Best of luck . . . and keep in touch; I may be working on an idea or two. NextLevel.

So would anyone be interested in playing (mostly) the same course for a C-Tier in June? It all depends on whether or not I can use the other side of river again during the summer. It gets a lot more use during the summer so I might not be able to put the holes over there.

Let me know what you think so I can get started.

Oh, and another interesting thing. At the tournament, I accidentally did 100% payout instead of the 60% that I had advertised. My bad. The tournament in June will be 100% payout too.

So would anyone be interested in playing (mostly) the same course for a C-Tier in June?

I'll play in June if you an keep the costs to a minimum. Do another fundraiser, I hear they are cheaper to sanction.

I need more rated rounds.

Chris - It is cheaper to do a fundraiser sanctioned, but it has to be for a non profit org. and there is paperwork.

Sam - John Swanson and I will be starting a Disc Golf Club for Polk County and we will be talking to the parks department about putting in concrete tee pads and hopefully putting anchors in the temporary locations for tournaments. We'll see how that goes.

do a pdga charity sanctioned event like I am doing for May 14-15 at camp taloali... allows for non members to play for the same price. And yeah the payout was big, was like ummm, how you fundraising? heh... loved the tournament, and yes, teepads are always tough at natural courses in rainy and muddy weather...
Since this is a popular park and holes 5 and 6 would be tough, probably 4 and 7 too. I would just not do 5 and 6, keep 4 and 7, make 7 tee pad farther back 30-40 feet and bring basket closer so it's not near the bathroom as much. Then a farther back teepad to the normal basket that is hole 6 normally? See what the park people say? Keep the island hole of course. There is also room after tournament hole 17 up the hill a bit. could make hole or 2 in that corner? just ideas, do it!

I've thought about putting a hole or two up past 17. We'll see what the Parks Department wants to do and go from there.

Thanks for all your input.

I just wanted to remind everyone that if you found a disc during the tournament that is not yours, please return it. I know I lost two: one is in the river on hole 1 and I don't expect to get that back, but I also forgot to pick one up for the stream on hole 10, so I know someone picked that one up. And I know of a couple other people that had discs in there as well.

So if you found a disc or know of someone that did, please return them.

Thank you

Here's a link to some pictures one of my brothers took.

One of my other brothers was taking video and is working on putting it all together right now. Hopefully I'll be able to post a link to it tomorrow or possibly tonight.

I would still like to hear what everyone thought of the tournament. Tell me things you did like and what you didn't like.

Thanks

PS - Still hoping someone returns my Glow Gazelle that I left in the water on hole 10.

I didn't like the fact I didn't make it. I do like the fact it sounds like people had a good time!

Chase, do not feel bad about the Glow Gazelle. I lost a brand new Groove on hole 11 in the Ivy.

So hey Chase,

I wish I could give you some kind of constructive criticism, but I wouldn't know what to criticize. The course changes were unique and fun. It looked to me like everyone had a great time. Your Sponsors came through big time with goodies. What's not to like?

Thanks to you and the entire WOUDGC for all your efforts, it really paid off.

Awesome event, solid all the way through. The course was fun, the weather sucked, but you had no control over that, haha. Thanks Chase!

Hopefully we can get a good turnout like that in the OSu fundraiser!

I would still like to hear what everyone thought of the tournament. Tell me things you did like and what you didn't like.Better late than never, so here's some feedback.

Basically it was an awesome event. Great course, (too) good payout, things ran on time. Only issue was some of the temp teepads were a mud pit. No criticism of you Chase, it's one of the hazards of having temp holes in rainy weather. Overall I had a blast and look forward to next year! :)

Knowing that the payout was 100%, how much was actually raised for the club?

Hole 3 over the river was epic! I wish we had that hole in the Portland area. ;)

We ended up raising ~$200. But aside from raising money, I think the tournament was a huge success in that everyone had a good time and I learned a lot about course design and how to better run a tournament.

Be on the lookout for the June 4th tournament at Dallas. Hole 3 should be back for that one.

Hopefully there won't be as much river in June. ;)
