1 through 18! :whistler:

Bob

Nice Bob.

It hasn't been fully decided yet Scott.
(Oh by the way have you used the script from last event yet.)
It will not be as rough as last time.
I'm sure it will still have some mando's.
Won't be as long as last time either.
As of now 16 holes in the park and two holes in the field.
The two field holes are a 400 foot tough par 4. The other field hole is a bomb hole around 1000 feet. As of now they don't have a problem with a couple of holes and sharing the field. So far nothing is planned for the field.
Will post course later.

It must be official. It's on the pdga calander now. Yeah. Did not see an e-mail for on line reg. If this is the only way you can pay I can take your card through Carquest.
A small donation to Special Olympics will be in order to use the field.
I will make one and anyone attending can make one as well.

I thought this one might be fun. Can I find last year's player field on PDGA?

The 1st tourney I traveled to was at Wortman in either 99 or 2000. Crap, I can't remember!

Daylight Savings 1 was actually in 2009 along with Turkey Rama.
Last years pdga events were Special Olympics Fundraiser and The Squirrel Open.
The Adv. Master trophy is looking good.
Just a reminder. If I don't know your coming, I can't have a trophy ready for your division.
So far the only divisions are Adv. Master and Int. women. ( paid entries )
Day of locals, A couple pros, a couple adv. men, a couple int. men, one super senior, one adv. master. plan on day of as most people do.
Thanks for looking into attending.
Played 2 more practice rounds. 61 and a 64 not getting any better. The Course is playing tougher than the november course for me so far. So much for making it easier. A par of 58 will be a good ameteur score.

Just palyed the course again and did my best with a 57.
I think a good pro score will be in the high 40's.
A good am. score high 50's. Good Adv. score mid 50's
Lot's of places to gain strokes. Placement for par may not be so bad.

Shawn Kirk..........25+28=53.........-5
Terry Shuler........25+33=58.........0
Jesse Hickerson...29+32=61........+3
John Maffin.........34+38=72.......+14
Shawn got a birdie 4 on the par 5. Jesse missed a good birdie putt.
Not possible by me unless I make an upshot.
Might change hole 8. Take away the mando and play the path line right as o.b.
Hopefully the parks will let us bark the course again this year to make it all look nice before the event.
Looks like I haven't mentioned the ace pot. $2.00 ace pot. It turns into $1.00 per round. An ace in the first round would get you have the pot. If nobody aces in the first round then it carries over to the second round. If nobody aces we will have a fun shot for the money. 50% to c.t.p., 25% to next c.t.p. 25% to Special Olympics. Raising a little money for Special Olympics lets us use the field without the $280.00 price tag.

So I put a big f in hole in my throwing hand today, hopefully healed up in time for this. Had a drill fall about 15 ft and the tip of it punctured my palm. A nice phillips head hole in my hand, but it went deep and hurts like hell. I am still down for this event, even if I have to switch to left to do it.

Thanks for the course compliment. Still getting comments on the course. The locals have asked me not to change a thing and to please use it again next year. They know that I never do the same thing twice. Sounds like I might be forced to use it again this year.
The course for this event isn't as punishing. Yet still alot of chances to add to your score.

Just got done talking with the field gods. Same old story. We can use the field unless it gets rented by next weekend. He said very unlikely so have fun and raise a little cash for Special Olympics.
Holes 16 and 17 will be changed.
Hole 16 will have the same tee with a different basket placement. The basket will be longer and left. More away from the building. A second mando was added as well on the left side of the fairway. So a double mando.
Hole 17 will tee off from across the path by basket 9. Again a little longer hole than before. So the course just got a little longer and tougher.
The mother in law makes a killer gourmet chilli. Between the wife and the mother in law we should have plenty of chilli.
Donations for lunch and for using the field are needed. I have to turn in a money report to the field gods. They want to see that we are doing good by not being charged to use the field. 100% of all donations go to Special Olympics. Can't wait to see how the course rates this time.
Thank you everyone see ya next Sunday.
P.S. only 11 spots left (maybe 15) I have 4 put on hold waiting for a reply.

Total Fail of a tourney if I might say. I mean a basket bunjie corded to a tree?? is this even PDGA legal. I know you tried very hard Smoking Joe to host a good event, however when the conditions get so bad that there is a risk of a golfer getting injured thats not good. There was several t-pads too close to other baskest and thats dangerous. # people on 2 different cards I was on were almost hit with discs, myself included right as I was t-ing off. I almost had to get some dental work.
On the plus side I got to meet some realy cool, laid back disc golfers. Got some chilli for lunch, almost had an ace on hole 5 with a disc I have never thrown before, Got to chit-chat with the DGOD people, had a chance to talk with Dion(never met him before) cool guy. I wont be playing anymore Oregon disc events unless there held at well established disc courses. Wortman is too small for this type of event.

this was only the 2nd time Terry held this event and while the course condition and layout had problems this was a charity fundraiser.A golfer risks injury anytime they go and while this was compounded by weather and lack of space ,due to the powers to be not giving Terry access to as much room as last time, to call it a "Total Fail" I feel is a little harsh. As far as Oregon disc events, basing your opinion on this event is like someone from Oregon judging your States events on a bad day at Leverich.Play some tourneys at Milo,Pier,Timber,Dabney,Trojan,Hornings,Stub Stewart all in the Portland area or roll down I-5 thru Corvallis,Eugene, Cottage Grove, down to Whistlers playin those courses will give a much better taste of Oregon Disc Golf.

This was a "C" tier event that was a fundraiser for a worthy cause and was NOT typical of PDGA events.Play some other well established events in better conditions on better courses and you will feel differently. When you do, look and see how many people it takes just to run the tourney let alone the work to get a course ready.I understand your frustration and your post was honest, not that negative compared to some on here. That was just a rough start to your PDGA experience.

Don't let a subpar event like this skew your view of PDGA tourneys Xander. This was a complete farce. I was also almost hit by a drive, I almost twisted by knee out of place on a number of holes, and I posted a score I didn't even think was possible on hole 15. I simply could not get ANY traction in the muck which acted as a tee pad. I have never left a tourney before, and having driven up from Eugene for this event it was hard for me to leave (even if I was DFL) but in the end the safety factor due to sloppy-muck tee areas forced my hand. Events such as the upcoming Great Northwest Open and the Three Player Open at McIver are a much better example of what PDGA tourneys should be like. I mean come ON! A basket bungeed to a tree? How is that even a legal target?

I am not faulting the TD on his efforts, but I agree with a previous post that this should not have been a PDGA sanctioned event. The course is too small and the lack of tee pads, or any semblance of one, should prohibit the PDGA from sanctioning a tourney.

Scott
March 14th, 2011, 02:44 PM
The teepads were a mess. It was evident that Terry spent a lot of effort spreading bark where he could, but the fact is we've had so much rain lately that it just didn't make a difference. Not a lot he could do about the rain, and he did move a few pads during lunch which helped a lot.

While we're on the topic of saftey, the tee areas for holes 14 and 17 were a geniune hazard and should never, ever happen again. For those who weren't there, the teepad for hole 17 was directly in the fligh path of hole 17, about 40' away from 17's teepad.

The layout and teepads may work well for a small weekly with 3-4 groups, but is not suitable for a full-field PDGA event (Even a c-tier).

It's not my intent to bash Terry or his events. It is evident how much energy and love he puts into his events. It is my hope that he takes these suggestions to heart and uses them to improve future events.

Let me start by stating, "I love the lines of Wortman" But you can add all the safari holes, lentghten others or change Ts, to Wortman you want and you still can't call it Pier, hell lunchtime for that matter. It just isn't set up for heavy play, period; let alone a full blown tournement. Sorry Terry I aggree that you work your buns off, but it's a small course and will have these issues until you convince the city to give you room to install something bigger elswhere. Until then, it is a great little course, good luck.

1. Random acts of really nasty weather happen.
2. Terry had to commit to PDGA certification before it rained a week.

Sure, rain happens. In some places, more than others. We happen to live in one of those places. We get that. But a TD can be prepared for that. Hopefully the TD (and other TDs) will learn from this experience that natural teepads in really rainy weather is a really bad idea.

My back and knees agree with you. It was the first time I have played in a park that wet with a layout that tight. Very challenging is a lot of fun, very painful makes it hard to want to do that again. The end of the tournament could have been handled much better, a lot of us walked away shaking our heads and asking each other where we think we finished.
On the positive side, some of the shots were very fun to throw. If I was playing with a small group (or alone) I would really like to throw some of those shots again.

I wanted to say thanks again to Terry for putting a lot of time and effort into the tournament with the handmade tee signs and temp holes, Wortman is very small and is very difficult to fit 18 decent holes into. I think it was a good course considering what we have to work with. I just tried to keep a positive attitude despite the muddy tee's, rain, wind, and general nastiness involved in Wortman park winter golf.

I'm excited to be playing pro from here on out, I hope this win marks the beginning of a good tournament season.

I guess I'll throw in my take on the event:

First off, I'd like to say that I'm extremely appreciative that Terry threw this event, it was clear that he put a lot of effort into the tournament and overall, I thought most of it was handled very smoothly. I always think that post-tourney criticism should be tempered with a healthy dose of "are you out TDing right now??" and as a tournament player who has never run an event, I work to keep in my mind just how much coordination, effort and time goes into the process from Terry's end.
Overall, I enjoyed the modified Wortman layout, I thought the layout was imaginative, fun, challenging and while luck was a factor, it wasn't a factor on every hole, and with safe play, OB free rounds weren't impossible (I nabbed one of them). I'd also like to give props to the overall pace of the event outside of when we were on the course. Lunch didn't drag on too long and the turn-around after the 2nd round to the awards was faster than a lot of PDGA events I've played in. Also, thanks to those who helped in making lunch, it was great to warm up with chili and dogs, definitely a highlight of a very cold day. I'd also like to give thanks to having script redeemable both at the event and at Disc Golf Depot, event-only script is really frustrating for me as a played who is very picky about my discs, and doesn't have any desire to try out new molds.

Rather than simply bash the event, here are a few suggestions for next year.

1. I'll echo previous statements that considering the time of the year and Wortman's propensity for sloppy conditions, more concrete pads would have been great, the second field hole comes to mind as a place where it would have been just as easy to tee off from the concrete.
2. Less fairway crossing, (inside of this comment, I felt that a number of holes could have been safer just by being shorter, like having 14 just be 50 feet shorter rather than having it shoot over another tee pad, the course was plenty difficult as it is.).
3. Perhaps putting out a call for people to bring practice baskets, I know a number of players have really nice practice baskets they might be willing to lend for the day to avoid the tree basket or the single-set-chains discatcher on the first field hole.
4. A thorough explanation to the field of PDGA rule 803.05.B (casual water/optional relief rule) might have alleviated some frustration, at least one player in my group was baffled at why I felt I could move my disc back from the hole, in line with the basket, instead of standing in casual water.
5. Being able to see scores after the first round and after the event would have been nice, I still don't know how many players were in my division.

One other comment I'll make regarding safety, partly in response to Chainsmasher, is that mud happens, sometimes you just have to deal with it, there is no reason you can't simply stand in place and make a solid throw, I survived in tractionless sneakers largely by doing just that. Tough conditions are part of the game, and in all honesty, Terry didn't require pre-registration, no one made anyone show up and play in what was clearly going to be a pretty muddy day.

I'll close by again thanking Terry, hopefully I'll be able to return next year for your event with better luck with the weather and another fun, challenging course to try and conquer.

Sure, rain happens. In some places, more than others. We happen to live in one of those places. We get that. But a TD can be prepared for that. Hopefully the TD (and other TDs) will learn from this experience that natural teepads in really rainy weather is a really bad idea.

Your asking a TD (as in only one making event happen with very limited help) to prepare for an unknown condition 6 weeks in advance....

Concreat teepads are not an option on most holes due to McMinnville being a near police state. Takes 4 police cars to pull over a car load of teenagers...

Last year had fairly solid footing, Rain gods smiled on us. The name of event and timing being set on variable DST change and fact that no pre-reg was required (and looking at radar/forecast) is all that needs to be said about not going in with an idea that it might be an interesting day.

I am a weather geek and wore fine protection and muck boots. Did not help my game but body and such are fine.

My personal opinion is XXXX safety first. If you can't dodge the random disc or tree limb, well, maybe Darwin is still alive and well.

I'll chime in and offer my opinion in the matter. I have played over a hundred PDGA events and dozen non-sanctioned events in my seven year career. I have also been the TD of over 20 events, most of them run at Adair or Willamette. Both venues are pretty easy to hold events at, Adair is incredibly easy to hold events at as its a large park with not a lot of traffic.

1. The Weather this past weekend was atrocious for disc golf. I played both events and after each day I was freezing cold and my legs were as soar as they've ever been.

2. Terry does a great job for what he has to work with, and considering that not a lot of his events fill to this capacity or see the amount of traffic that he got this weekend, I think things went as well as they could. Yes the tee pads were awful, there just isn't a lot you can do about that considering the amount of rain involved. Best options would be to have rubber pads, or use the sidewalks, or move tee pads at break (which he did do for a few of them).

3. The lack of a scoreboard was unfortunate. I did bring one from the WDGC to use, but without leader cards or someone willing to write up 60+ names the morning of the event, it becomes irrelevant. The best thing to do there would be to ask a club ahead of time to bring one, and be prepared for its use. It is much more fun for the players to see the scores at lunch and see how things shook out.

4. Shaun Kirk is the man. We were tied with three holes to play, both staring at 35' for birdie on hole 16. I skipped my shot over the basket and he proceeded to nail his putt for the go ahead. I made perhaps my BEST trick putt to date, virtually throwing a spike anhyzer putt 20' around the tree (the basket was tied to the tree...) Then I parked the next hole after Shaun places his drive about 30 wide. He cans the putt. Then he parks 18 to seal the deal, and I had to go for the ace to tie. No ace. Congrats Mr. Kirk on an amazing finish. However, does this mean you are giving up on the collegiate pursuits for Western Oregon? By rule, a cashing pro cannot compete at a college level. If so, then here's to an amazing season...if not, then well...welcome to pro anyway!

Overall a fun event, fun weekend, and perhaps the worst weather I'll play in this year. I'd rather the rest of my season is sunny and 70, but we can't always get ideal conditions, gotta make the most of what we get :)

And no, this event is not indicative of Oregon Disc Golf in the greater sense of the phrase. It is indicative of a winter event at a small course. Oregon DG has some of the best run events in the country, and if a new player to the game or to PDGA events wanted to see that, please check out some of the long running events in the state.

Your asking a TD (as in only one making event happen with very limited help) to prepare for an unknown condition 6 weeks in advance....

I am not asking that at all. But I do think it is reasonable for a TD to look at the current weather conditions and plan accordingly. Nearly every natural teepad that was used had a concrete or sidewalk option nearby. A couple of them were used at lunch.

For the record, I am not bitching about the rain and mud. I wore raingear and waterproof socks and stayed pretty warm and relatively dry all day. As a forehand thrower, I use very little run up and can stand and deliver when necessary. I did not have any problem at all with any of the pads (but can certainly see why many people would).

Finally, I would like to state again that I am very appreciative of Terry and the events he throws. I offer suggestions in the hope that already fun events can be made better.

As a 47 year old man that had a 50/50 chance at beating Shaun 3 years ago at a course that Shaun helped design at my home I have to give him total prop's. Now, I'm happy to be within 8 after a round. Very proud!!:posting::shooting::posting:

Terry, I noticed on pdga that you have me taking cash for this tournament. I received scrip... not cash. If you could let pdga know that I would appreciate it. I got an AM Worlds invite and wont be able to go if I have accepted cash. Thanks Jeremy

Looks like the pdga has finalized things. Ratings should be in next update. Sorry for they delay. When dealing with Special Olympics things take a little time.
All the script has been turned in. You're all welcome on not dating your script.
Disc golf depot refunded me $93.00 in script money. I in turn donated to the Special Olympics on behalf of the Disc golf Depot. So that makes $316.00 total to the Special Olmpics. Thank you all for helping me raise money so in turn we can use the field area.
