We have been a little quite lately ladies, so I thought I would start a new thread.

Here is what is currently in my bag:

Drivers:

R-Pro Katana 159 new
R-Pro Katana 157 seasoned (My go to driver when I want to throw far)
R-Pro Boss 150 new (Throwing this more and more lately watch out kantana)
R-Pro Boss 160 new
R-Pro Xcalliber 150 new (just added this recently, and love it for forehands)
Star Wraith 161 worn (this is my go to forehand disc)
Champion Wraith 161 new
Champion Firebird 157 worn (love this disc for flicks I want to fade hard and quick. Also found it to be a really good disc in the wind)
Champion Sidewinder 160 (rollers & anhyzers)
Champion Roadrunner 159 (rollers & anhyzers)
Champion Vulcan 158 new (undecided about this so far still trying it out)
Star Valkyrie 162 worn (used to be my go to driver, but just don't throw this as much as I used to.)
Star Valkyrie 150 worn

Fairway drivers:
Star TL 161 seasoned (probably the disc I have thrown the most. Flies super straight for me)
Star TL 162 new

Mids:

Star Cro 169 seasoned (really the only mid I throw)
dx Stingray 167 worn (love this disc for shorter anhyzer shots)

Putter:

RW Aviar 175 worn
R-pro Dart 175 worn (recently put this disc back in my bag for jump putting)

Well, I've totally redone my bag, based on the class Randy and I took lately with Dave. I was told that part of my problem, is that I shouldn't be throwing 150g discs -- I need to be up closer to 170g, because the light discs have been encouraging bad habits, and cutting my distance. So, now my skeleton bag is:

168g Vision Grip Line
about a 170g soft Voodoo
about a 175g old style DX XD

I have some other heavier discs of Randy's that I'm auditioning, but I haven't decided on any others yet.

... what's in my bag

2 or 3 150 r-pro bosses (i like one old, one medium and one brand new)
160ish star wraith (trying it out for forehands)
161 star valkyrie (my one and only buck huck)
150 star valk (mostly used at this point for skinny sneaky overhand shots)
166 champion leopard
150 champ sidewinder (oh, pinky, i'm glad we finally got our issues worked out... i missed you)
167 baby blue (yes, the color does matter) eclipse (sometimes i carry two, just for security, like a blankie)
175 hot pink eclipse
175 xd
175 r-pro aviar
175 aviar

... and i'll just leave it at discs and won't get into the excessive list of "other"

I won't kid you. A lot of Dave's teachings seemed a little odd, and this was the suggestion that bothered me the most. His explanation is that I can't yet get enough spin to maintain the momentum on a lighter disc. A heavier disc maintains the spin for longer because it has more initial angular momentum, given the same spin. He also said I have the strength, but I need to learn how to apply it. So, that's why he suggested I throw heavier discs. Maybe after I work on my form, and I'm able to get more spin, then I could drop back down.

It does seem to be making at least somewhat of a difference. I'm getting about 10-12% more distance, so that's a good thing. I have a whole list of things to work on before the weather gets better, and fortunately, most can be done indoors!

... i know a lot of gals throw heavier than i do... however, this is what i know about heavy vs. light... i played for 10 years throwing what my dad threw (heavier... 170's and such)... the first time i ever threw a 150 (it was a star valk, pink... the original pinkie) it went further, faster and prettier than any drive i had ever thrown and i hardly even tried to throw it... i now throw heavier valks than that... but i'm only talking like a 160 or 162... my midranges i do throw heavier, but drivers, i like 'em light... maybe this is due to my ridiculously short arms...

... i also know it is foolhardy to only have lightweight stuff, 'cause you can't throw it in the wind...

... i would be very interested to hear from teresa, carie and suzie q about what weights they throw... girls???

peace,

I agree with Emma here. I started out throwing in the 150 range, but what made the difference for me was learning the proper technic, (thanks to Nate). I now throw 150 to 162. My go to driver that I get the most distance out of is my 158 r-pro katana. My midrange discs are also the heavier side, and I putt max weight. Emma is right though about the wind. I found out what works and what didn't work in my bag at team disc golf last month at Bonneville. My more understable light stuff was crap. The disc that worked the best for me in the wind was my champion 157 firebird.

I throw a variety of weights, depending if it is backhand or forehand. For forehand, I tend to throw 150-165g (teebirds, orcs, valks, sidewinders). Because forehand is a different beast, I throw a heavier disc, 162-169g (orcs, destroyers and katanas) but keep a beat-in 150g Banshee for a 200-250ft money shot. For windy days I keep a few overstable 170s for kicks. Putters and midranges are max weight.

Ladies, if you are just starting out, you deserve new discs that are weight-appropriate; none of your man's left-overs. If he (or significant other) wants you to play more, then they need to pony up and get you some legit plastic. Or, you can treat yourself to a few discs.

Randy was very sweet, in that when I got the recommendation to use heavier discs, he used his first scrip ever to get me the Vision, rather than let me just try and work it out with his castoffs. On the other hand, he's tried it a couple times, and has let me know that if I need to go back to lighter discs, he'd be more than glad to take the Vision off my hands!

LOL! Thanks! I only started really playing last spring but I have been practicing with my boyfriend and friends every chance I get and since I've started strength training, I've noticed that I've been able to handle certain discs much better than before. For example, my Flex Surge SS, I used to shank that forehand drive all the time, now I can get more distance, not as much as I would like but I can get it to go in the direction I want it to go, it's so cool! I'm going to start participating in tournaments this year and see how I rank.

I just re-read this thread to see what disc and weights you ladies are throwing for mids

I feel like allisons moving up in her game a little, and would get some benefit from some slightly heavier mids

her mids right now are
dx 147 stingray
dx 148 shark

she is also starting to use her dx 175 xd (she got from chick flick) more as an approach

I was mostly looking at replacing the shark- with maybe a buzzz, buzzz ss, or a roc
but im having a hard time deciding on how much heavier she should go
and having a hard time finding a buzzz ss in the low 160s
which I think would be best at this point
