Cool!

And it leads to another question: If the 3PO is in late April, when if at all will the GNO be?

Paging Ron the Whip....paging Ron the Whip.....Is there a preliminary schedule for 2011 for those of us with compulsive planning syndrome?

Could someone give a few more details on what makes this event extra special? I "heard" alot about this but wasn't sure what was different. That is an excellent weekend to have this event.

Well last year for example and I hope it stays the same. Every group was a group of three, and it was intentionally capped so it would remain this way. For the most part three-somes at Milo eliminated back ups. Also Mike is a good guy and put on a great tourney.

i really dug the format for the first round which was that they set up the cards not according to division but i believe according to rating (high, medium, low) so you got to play with people you wouldn't normally get to play with... oh right, and mike is awesome and makes gorgeous trophies... oh, and i won last year. that was good, too.

Mike is including lunch both days. On the reg for you can choose Pizza or Frybread Tacos :drool:
For those not in the know about Frybread Tacos this is a traditional native food. The Frybread Tacos will be made fresh by Kirsten Voyer, Chris Voyer, and myself...well I help chop things anyway. Kirsten has been making frybread with her family since she was a kid for pow wows and other events.
Fry bread Taco is a piece of hot frybread with chili aka The Glory (her dad's special chili recipe) lettuce, onions, salsa, sour cream, and cheese. Made to order and we'll have vegetarian chili available.
We'll probably bring some drinks to sell for cheap if they're not included.

I agree with NWDiscer, Advanced Ams is supposed to be between 935 and 970. This tournament has a great advanced field, without any obvious baggers.

bryan_luoma
March 3rd, 2011, 10:34 AM
I agree, it will definitely be competitive and a difficult division to win, but based on current ratings alone, the Advanced AM field at 3PO looks pretty typical to me:

17 < 935
9 >= 935 && <= 950
6 > 950 && < 960
3 > 960 && < 970
0 > 970

edit: Unless your name is JE or RR.
:-)

Joshua Olmsted

I know ill be fighting just to hit the cash line, but hey, I enjoy tougher competition.

9 >= 935 && <= 950
6 > 950 && < 960

0 > 970

I do think that people should play where they are allowed to play by rating and where they will enjoy themselves the most! I'm not trying to call out people and get into the whole bagger thing. I'm just surprised to see people who could definitley move up and be competitive, but remain in the same division year after year. It's a choice and I can respect someone's choice even if I don't understand it.

If people who are good enough to win big tournaments in Advanced never move up because they don't always win or place in the top ten, the Pro fields will never grow. If the Pro fields don't grow, the lower rated Pro players will have less chance to cash, and the cycle continues with upper level Advanced players scared to enter the Pro ranks because they will struggle to cash.

That's obviously my bias as a lower rated Pro player who can but usually doesn't cash or place in big tournaments! My motivation is to grow the Pro fields by encouraging people who have the skills to be competitive to move up. Most new Pro players struggle for a year or two or more...but they get better as players as they do, and eventually they do have some success. And if the next crop of great Advanced players decide to take the plunge and join the Pro field, the cash line gets deeper and the success of the field continues to grow.

Again - just my opinion and I'm not pointing fingers. This is probably a discussion best suited to a different thread anyway, although it's well covered ground.

Those two have great difficulty realizing what division they belong in. It may be a sign of senility. At least RR appears to be looking for more competition, not less.:slapface:

Well said Matt B.
I think you nailed it on the head. Unless you are restricted to play in a certain division due to your player rating, it really comes down to personal choice.
There are good arguments to support both decisions (staying put, or playing up).

If you win once or place in the top 3, three times, move up!
If everyone did that, cashing in the pro field would be easier,
top 40%+ get paid.

I have a good idea lets make it a pro only next year

I think that would get some folks to move up!!!

who's that Eric Lund guy?

How many pros in this tourney are rated under 970?

If you win once or place in the top 3, three times, move up!
If everyone did that, cashing in the pro field would be easier,
top 40%+ get paid.

Or have an intermediate field, our field is almost perfectly in line for what the PDGA recommends based on ratings. There are only 8 players in the open field with lower ratings than mine. Most of them are MUCH higher. Why would I want to pay an extra $20, not get a cool players pack, and get my A$% kicked?

DexterHawk
March 4th, 2011, 03:46 PM
Because you are there to test your skills...

Choosing a division should start with your rating, but it shouldn't end there!

There was a comment earlier about someone feeling like they were just fighting to cash. That's how everyone should feel about their division. If you know that you are going to cash easily you're in the wrong division.

That said moving to pro is tough. For most serious talented players it is the first time they will play in a tournaments where they won't regularly go home with more shwag then they pay in entry fees. When I moved up to pro I had one win in advanced (not even in my home state and a fifth place finish at my home course) I struggled at first placing out of the cash in the rest of the tournaments that I played that year. I have since had more wins in Pro than I've had in any other division (4,including a B tier last year, yeah baby!). The idea that everyone should expect to get three wins in Advanced before they move up to pro is just mathmatically unsustainable.

Playing pro means you are generally on the course with people who can really play, who are fun to watch and who generally understand etiquette (though there are some jerks, just like every other division). I have learned more and grown more quickly as a player since I've challenged myself to play Pro and yes it was very motivating to walk away from a few tournaments empty handed.

The question you should ask yourself is not where you are now, but where you want to be. If you want to be thought of as one of the best disc golfers in your area you should be playing pro. Or as my mentor Buck might say "put you money where your mouth is"

Zuhocky
March 5th, 2011, 01:09 AM
ya what he said, if you know your going to get a pay out before you play, your in the wrong division. Or your a really good Pro and there are only a few, they seem to be the ones against players packs for pros.

when I moved up to pro in '05 there were usually 10 or 12 in the open division. what do you think my odds of cashing were, 0%. I put in my dues for sure.

I think pros should always get the same players packs as the not so pros.

Pro divisions payout 40% or more.

Man if I only had 400 more posts.

Keep on Hukin'

Nope, playing with my friends this year in MA1. I'll gladly play up in all non-PDGA events though.

Fair warning - I'll be playing MM1 for BSF in order to have a better shot at getting in.

I am getting so amped for this event. The course looks great, but I am hoping it will be mowed before hand. The basket positions have been moved to the longs for the event and is making it a bit more challenging to shoot even for 27. I should make it a point to get out there and practice the temp holes that I assume will be used for the tourney like they were last year. Let's go 3PO!!!

The added 9 doesn't really flow with the existing 27 into one course. It plays best as 2 18 hole courses, East and West.

sorry but the lack of reading is bothering me. :shooting:When you sign up for a tournament keep some info about it handy, like the top half of the form in the case of the 3po. I guess since your daddy signed you up he should have taped it to your bedroom door or wall. Ditto! Excellent tournament and a big thank you to Mike, Brynn, all the Milo regulars who do such a great job taking care of and improving the course, and everyone who helped out and supported the event. Great tacos for lunch, beautiful weather on Saturday, and the courses looked and played great! There were even Easter Eggs on Sunday!

On a personal note I once again got my butt kicked by Milo and was seriously humbled by my lack of skill in negotiating the courses.

PS - DGA Mach Lite for sale in the Buy/Sell/Trade section, with 20% of the sale price donated back to the 2011 BSF.
