Hi all,

The 10th annual winter event is being held at Adair on Saturday, January 29th. I guess most of the team golf folks might stay up in Portland. You can get to the Festivus registration form from the WDGC website. http://www.kaser.com/wdgc/tournaments.html

No on-line registration is being set up and the event is expected to be full by early-mid January.

As per Festivus tradition's the club will provide a nice hot lunch including multiple pots of chili and other options for all participants. Sponsorship from Calapooia Brewing in Albany. Umbrellas and Innova tourney stamped discs are in the works for players packs. Umbrellas for all, discs for Ams with extras available for sale/scrip.

There will be 2 rounds of 22 holes at Adair limited to 88 participants. There will be several holes different than recent years. Flow changes will cause the gravel parking lot to be closed but the lower paved parking lot will remain open. No camping arrangements are planned for this time of year.

It will be a blast regardless of the weather. Colin Sexton is the defending Open Champion in possession of the Festivus Pole.

Happy Festivus!

Greg :cheers::chug:

A fair question, but who's to say what date Festivus should be on? I saw your follow up suggesting that Festivus is on the 23rd. I'm respectfully interested in your source.

Like the Super Bowl this tournament was not originally named Festivus. The first WDGC hosted event at Adair in January 2002 run by Jay Sexton, and played on the first 10 baskets installed and eight temporary holes. Many pioneered by Pat Farrell who set up many temporary course tourneys. I started running it the second year what I named Winter Festivus initially.

As the TD, and an avid football fan, I have scheduled the event for the Saturday of the weekend the NFL takes off before the Superbowl for many years. A precursor of sorts was a Superbowl tourney that I ran the Saturday of Superbowl weekend on a temp course at Avery Park in January 2001.

I could have taken the Super Bowl them forward to Adair but Festivus has broader appeal than Football to disc golfers. Also if I ran this in late December I would have to have fewer holes and players to get 2 rounds in. On very wet days it is a struggle at the end of January.

Festivus is one of the most fun tournaments in Oregon, and kudos to Greg for running it every year! I think when a tournament reaches it's tenth year it can probably be called whatever the TD wants to call it. Especially when the lunch is delicious and free and a keg of free beer shows up. But that's just the opinion of one person who doesn't actually take holidays popularized by television shows too seriously.

I agree Fetivus is a super fun tournament, and I am so dissapointed I have to miss it this year. Too bad it is on a team disc golf weekend. :( Maybe next year.

Is there a weekend in the winter that isn't a team disc golf weekend?

Is there a weekend in the winter that isn't a team disc golf weekend?

This is the team golf schedule, so yes there are quite a few weekends that are not team golf weekends. There are other events going on though I realize. It's just the way it is in these parts there are lots of events going on all year round, so it is hard not to overlap. Hopefully it works out for next year because I really love the Festivus event. :)

Festivus started in February of 1966 then moved to December 23rd.

Now it is celebrated on the Saturday 1 week before Superbowl Sunday and has been for many years. How do I know this? Because it is on the schedule.

Another Festivus miricle! :yay:

"Although the original Festivus took place in February 1966, as a celebration of the elder O'Keefe's first date with his future wife, Deborah,[1] it is now celebrated on December 23, as depicted on the December 18, 1997 Seinfeld episode, "The Strike".[2] According to O'Keefe, the name Festivus "just popped into my head."[1]"

So actually, the Festivus Disc Golf Tournament is closer to the original date of Festivus as it was intended by its creator. The Dec. 23rd date is a shamockery, bastardized by a sitcom!

Yes, send in your registrations next week to ensure a spot as it is filling up. After I get the list updated I will post the current registration list later tonight. Factoring people that have contacted me this week and are sending their registrations in, there should be about 20 spaces remaining open.

Discs Innova Star Katanas, Eco Wraiths and Valkyries have been ordered. Umbrellas have been ordered with Calapooia/Festivus logos. And trophies are now ordered through John Kinder in Bend, who will be rounding up a few more Rebels this weekend to get their registrations in.

I expect the folks that contacted me and already gave their name to follow through with payment to secure their spot. Some spots are held for tournament sponsors, and club members that are bringing food etc. for participants that I have not gotten around to collecting entry fees from.

I don't know who folks are by their NWDG ID's.

If you want on the wait list send me a private message to discgolfgreg@yahoo.com with your name and division of preference. I'm asking the first few on the wait list to mail me their registration check too. I won't cash it until I confirm you are in.

Thanks,

It's full and there never was a website for registrations to allow a more equal opportunity to get registered. I can add names to the wait list but the outlook is not good as I have 8 names already. I need name and division of preference for additions to the wait list.

Getting pretty excited to play in this well-regarded event, never having played in one before.

And so I'm interested in some of the added and tweaked holes in previous Festivi.

Dion has always added some fun twists to Adair, so I was wondering if anyone wanted to post any descriptions/reviews of the added/tweaked holes that Greg has used/designed before.

I know that past performance is no guarantee of future results, but it's fun to imagine what we may encounter this Saturday morning.

(Greg, I don't expect you to have to post anything. I know you are super busy.)

But some of the other typists on this board may want to share some thoughts.

Thanks.

Festivus was a ton of fun. Whoever made the cornbread for lunch is a culinary genius by the way. Great lay out. I really enjoyed the holes, with multiple baskets, and the double mando hole was interesting too. We were sooo lucky to get such nice weather!

snap7times
January 31st, 2011, 12:19 AM
and i might add to the "coolness" of the double mando is that Roy Albert was lucky enough to ace this hole on a skip with a champ gator that has the chick flick stamp on it... pay up everyone, that was a money ace... Roy screamed so loud, I heard him from all the way over by the playground, yes, I HEARD him yelling...

Awesome tournament as usual! I played amazingly poor in the first round (70) and amazingly well in the second round (55) although I missed plenty of putts in round 2. I apparently needed to shake some rust off in round one, but in round two my driving was the best its been - I hit basket on regular hole 2, hit basket on regular hole 11, and hit the pole on regular hole 12 (left) with my tee shot. I also had birdie putts on 19/22 holes, but only converted 11 of them.

Congrats to Nate for ripping it both rounds, and for Brice and Kirk for killing it as well.

Thanks Greg Johnson and the general WDGC for rocking it in the winter time and producing the best weather for golf in Festivus history, or the history of January for that matter.

It's the players and the club coming together to feed the participants that makes this event a pleasure through all the hard work that goes into it.

The weather was stellar this year. The umbrellas in the players packs kept the rain gods appeased.

Thank you Calapooia Brewing for your support of Festivus!

Congrats to 4 time Champion Nate Sexton!
Nice second round Dion, hitting the pole on 12 - amazing.

I'll get around to posting the results eventually, but I left the scoreboard and most of the tournament stuff at the place I stayed in town Saturday night.

I'll repeat my perspective of the most notable event.

I was playing in the group in front of Roy, I was walking to the next hole and missed seeing the skip off the road, but turned as it went in. It was Roy's first ever Ace and what I'm pretty sure is the first Ace on my basket. I ran back over and was the first to high five him and signed his otherwise unmarked Chick Flick Pink Champ Gator which he promptly bought from Karl Pilotte who had let him try it out!
