The state parks guys have been doing some serious tree thinning at Dexter... It's their park and they can do what they want to, but she has clearly lost some of her teeth... Mr Embree where ever you are (probably Vancouver or Elk hunting) I liked your nasty impossibly hard version better... The challening lines on this course are responsible for my game and it will be missed

I saw the notice of upcoming work a while back but I'm surprised they are doing a lot of tree cutting this time of year, it's the exact wrong time to do it for a lot of reasons. Of course, the pulp market goes up in Winter and is currently at a level that could actually pay for some fir removal. I guess the erosion and ground disturbance concerns of the golf course only apply to disc golf. But, it's not too surprising that the actual science and ecology of the situation isn't a factor for these folks. Where is it happening exactly?

hole 12 and 13 are the most effected on the course and then a ton of the pines to the right of hole 14 are gone.

the good news is that hole 13 is looking primed for maybe the addition of a deeper teepad and a new pin placement

Yeah, the thinning work so far has been on holes 12 and 13 mostly. The 'rough' on the right side of hole 12 is less 'rough' than it was, as is the rough on the left side of hole 13. It didn't appear to really change either hole.. there are still the same lines to go for as before.. you just get punished a little less should you miss the fairway on the drive.
Really, the biggest recent changes at Dexter that I've observed have been the early thin tree trunk on hole 3 getting the top removed (on the right side, just down the slope a little) and the *amazing* new tee location on hole 7. ;)

Well, at least they are working in flat areas, and the 12-13 area is the one spot that there are still some nice oaks that needed release from fir.

If the blue paint markings are an indicator of trees to be cut, hole 16 is set for some serious changes too. I do see nice potential for a new tee pad south of T14 now that the area has been cleaned up.

a quick update on the changes at dexter. the state will have two are three more segments of work in the coming months. work will be done on holes 16 and 17 next sunday monday and wednesday and again sometime in feb. please be aware that there will be INMATES http://www.panicfreaks.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=31396&stc=1&d=1258313182 cutting down trees, chipping, framing walkways and other random stuff during this time so steer clear. they'll shank you if you shank on them.
ALSO, please leave everything alone on the course at this time. Do not spread any chips, move any downed trees or anything else of that matter at this time. Once they finish up out there we can continue course maintenance on our own.
Thanks!

Any indication they might leave us some logs? We had discussed with the State Parks people in the past using some of the fir logs to create vegetation "islands" on some fairways. Every time I play Dexter I visualize all the places where they would work well to direct traffic off of vegetation. I'm sure they need most the logs to pay for the work, but if they left us some we could use them.

unfortunately, the parks dept was unable to meet with us last night due to illness so everything i know came from what they told rebecca prior to the meeting.
what i was told is that THEY plan on framing walkways and such with some of the downed logs, as well as making FLOWER POTS (yes, pots that will have flowers and such on the course) out of some of the others. i have no idea what will be left over (if anything). perhaps reba might be able to shed a little more light on this subject.
btw, matty b, i would love to chat with you about worlds this summer. shoot me a pm sometime soon so we can chat...
