The Fairview Planning Commission is moving along with installing a WORLD CLASS disc golf course designed by Portland's Dave Feldberg.
There is an important step approaching and John Gessner, the Fairview planning director (and avid disc golfer) believes that there needs to be a show of support from the disc golf community to show up before the Fairview Planning Commission to show community support for the disc golf course being planned.
Time and Place: January 11, 6:30pm. 1300 NE Village St, Fairview
We don't need hundreds of people but a turn out of 20-30 people would really pump them up.
So if local golfers would like to see a new WORLD CLASS course very close to downtown Portland, this would be a critical time and place to make an impression. Hope to see ya all there!

Across the road from Blue Lake park. The first tee will be roughly across the street from the main park entrance, I believe.
If you're out there checking it out there is no way you can miss it. Anyone who has played a lot of disc golf would look at the piece of land and immediately start seeing golf holes.

What do I have to say about this place after walking through it with Dave and Tyler and Jaemes and a few others...
Prepare for your assets to be kicked up and down the course. 11,000 feet over 18 holes. Par 68. Let the whining begin.

I won't whine... but I also probably won't bother playing it more than once. Not my cup of tea.
They've got 60 acres there; they could put in two courses. One for long bombers and one that might actually appeal to the multitudes that descend on Blue Lake Park every day in the summer.

We need a killer championship course and its nice to see players like Dave Feldberg and Stumptown step up. This will help the Portland area to host the world championships soon we hope. plus we have plenty of smaller courses around the area. Hope work partys start soon and there is enough room to put a club house on site that would be sweet.

On Tuesday December 14th, Metro Council gave a green light to the proposed Blue Lake Disc Golf Course. An open house is tentatively planned for January 5th at the Blue Lake Park Lake House. The matter goes before the Planning Commission on January 11th.
I would recommend as many people as possible come out to the Open House on January 5th for more information. Metro is working with Stumptown Disc Golf to discuss how best to proceed and what opportunities are out there for partnerships as well as sponsors and advertising opportunities.

If the course is too long or difficult, it won't become a destination course. It should have Pro and Am tees. There are reasons why we like to play McIver, Pier, and Timber... A new course should have all the qualities that these current courses deliver. If the new course could help bring Worlds here - yea baby.

Adam,
The property is not all usable. There are some wet land areas that can not be trampled in.
Here was the proposed 9 hole ball golf course layout if that helps,
http://library.oregonmetro.gov/files/blue_lake_golf_and_learning_center_rendering.pdf
Its nice to see this going forward after Dave handed this property off to Cris and I a few years ago. We had no luck going forward due to Metro's plan to put in a ball golf course. Now that Dave is living in Portland and Metro dropped the ball golf course it will be nice to see the course come into full development.

Stumptown Disc Golf met with Mike Brown of Oregon Metro tonight to discuss the proposed course at Blue Lake Park. We were presented with a copy of the design plan which was created by Dave Feldberg. He also told us that the Metro Council has given the go ahead to proceed with developing the course!
Next steps: The open house next Wednesday night (Jan 5th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lake House) is primarily to promote the concept with the City of Fairview and neighbors to the park. They would like to have a small representation of disc golfers at the meeting that will be willing to answer questions from the community. The purpose of the meeting is NOT to inform the disc golf community of the design plan or discuss how popular the course may or may not be or critique the plan from a disc golf perspective.
Following that meeting Fairview Planning Commission will meet to approve to use the land for a disc golf course. According to Mike Brown this meeting is simply a formality as the City of Fairview is behind the project and has even waived some of the design plan costs associated with getting the City to buy off of Metro's plan.
Contrary to some comments I have heard, this course is being built by Oregon Metro, not the City of Fairview or some other entity or person. They will be looking for financial sponsors to help build the course. They will also be looking for volunteer labor to build the course, which Stumptown Disc Golf has gladly offered to provide. The course will (initially) NOT be pay to play, however, there will be a $5 parking fee, or a $40 annual pass option to park at the park.
I should be able to provide a better image of the course design tomorrow, but until then, here is my scan of the design that was presented at the meeting tonight.

FYI, the official design shows closer to 8,224' over 18 holes. Still plenty to whine about with an average hole length of 457 feet (which makes it almost exactly the same average length as Milo with the 27 hole layout all in long.)

Proposed Blue Lake Disc Golf Course
Metro and the City of Fairview invite you to attend an open house to learn more about the proposed disc golf course on Metro's 70‐acre park land north of Blue Lake Road. Metro and City of Fairview staff, as well as Dave Feldberg, the course designer and top‐ranked professional disc golf player, will be available to answer questions.
What is disc golf?
Disc golf is played like traditional ball golf except it uses a hand thrown disc (like a "Frisbee") instead of a ball and an above ground basket as a target. The sport uses the same rules of play, courtesy, and etiquette as ball golf.
Where do I go to learn more about the sport?
The sport of disc golf is very popular in the Portland region and is growing rapidly across the nation. Recommended websites to learn more about the sport include:
• Professional Disc Golf Association: www.pdga.com
• Portland Disc Golf Community: www.stumptowndiscgolf.org
How will the land be developed?
Course development includes installation of tee pads and baskets, a gravel driveway and parking lot, landscaping, and foot bridges. There will be no grading, tree removal, or use of chemicals. Site management requires only periodic mowing of fairways. See a map of the course layout enclosed.
What must happen before the project gets built?
The course requires approval by the Fairview Planning Commission, which will consider it at a public hearing on January 11th at Fairview City Hall. In addition, Metro Council must approve the final budget and construction contracts before the project can move forward.

Steve,
In the tournament layouts at Milo the east and west are both 8000+ feet in distance on their own. This would be on par with that but nothing compared to the 11,000 foot monster we played at the 2009 Worlds in KC. Jeff Hagerty's favorite course played outside of Oregon to date!
The layout is very similar to what was looked at before. Interesting that the layout is in a counterclockwise fashion, must be that right hand dominate mentality( Stub is as well)! It has a nice mix of dogleg right & left and straight shots. Hole 4 is an awesome tunnel shot but will also be the biggest hurdle due to the risk of tree hits sending discs into the roadway. It was hard for Cris and I to get away from that hole and felt the risk was worth it when we walked the hole and threw it. The last part where the basket is on the other side of the water is actually a low ceiling shot over a pond that is created by the confluence of water from Fairview Lake. That hole will be so much fun to play, easily a course favorite!
Are they planning to build bridges over the flow of water on holes 5/6 & 8. These are not trivial creek crossings?

Yes, they are budgeting for bridges and a gravel parking lot, in addition to the typical disc golf course expenses of baskets, signs, pads etc.

Are the OB areas going to be a permanent feature, or are just for tournament play? How will they be marked? It doesn't look as if they are bordered by existing landmarks (streams, paths, etc).

I'm not sure as I haven't been out there yet. I know the big OB area in the middle of the course is mostly tall uncut reed grass and it may simply be a matter of different mowings used to designate OB when there isn't a tournament taking place.

Right now the ob's are marked with flags and the grass will only be cut in bounds in these areas leaving a well defined fairway area

After getting a guided look at the course last night before the open house, I can honestly say that this course has something for everyone! A player who has distance with accuracy has spots to show that skill; but similar to a course like Winthrop, a player who is smart, accurate and knows his/her discs will be rewarded.
This course will be a joy to play and is very well thought out from every tee. Awesome facilities, close to 84, creeks alongside fairways, hilly greens and golf shot decisions to make on 18 holes.

This is the exact attitude that irritates the hell out of me. Not only have we already stated there will be alternate pads, so technically this entire argument is pointless, but we have also pointed out that 95% of the courses in the area are short and easy. Clearly there are already plenty of courses that suit your game. We have also pointed out the lack of longer, more difficult courses, so why must those of us who are begging for a course like this be denied. Seriously, who is being selfish here?
With that said, why is it so bad to have a more difficult course? Milo is a long and difficult course, but yet if you go out to Milo on ANY given weekend it is PACKED with players of ALL levels and experience.

Scott,
Do you have the will power to avoid this new course so close to Portland. I sure don't. It will thoroughly kick my butt just like Milo does. But I will have more gas money left in my pocket, and get to play a great new course.
We need to all show up in force with smiling faces to Fairview meeting 6:15pm Tuesday the 11th to support this new course. We also have to cut the snide comments out of the mix and work together to assure we don't get in our own way on making this course successful. Every new course we can put it means more room to play without waiting in line, and tougher courses just make us all better. (I'll get off my pulpit now)

Please show up Tuesday 11th 6:15pm at Fairview with a big group of friends and help us make this happen. Tell everyone you know. We need to drowned out any negativity about disc golf with a big group of positive supporters.
The sentiment from some there is "what is disc golf? No one plays it. This is a big waste of money and will fail."
We have to prove this wrong each time to win over the Metro Council and the locals on the fence. A few well connect, upset, and determined people could create many hurdles for us to succeed. But not if they are perceived as the negative minority.

And there are many MORE people who will enjoy the course a lot more -- including people who've never played disc golf before -- if it has also has short tees. And apparently it will have them, so that's good news, and therefore I'm not so worried.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be long difficult courses. I'm just saying that installing short teepads in addition to the longs takes nothing away from the long layout and makes the facility an exponentially better value for the community. Multiple pads are better than multiple pin placements, because they let the players decide how much they want to blow out their arm on any given day.
I'm especially concerned about this issue given the specific location: Blue Lake Park is a busier venue by far than any other disc golf course around here, so this will give the sport more exposure than it's ever had in the Portland area. Have you been there on a weekend afternoon in the summer? It is PACKED. This means thousands of parkgoers, many of them families with kids, will see the course and wonder "what's that?" They'll read somewhere that disc golf is a beginner- and family-friendly sport, but if they decide to try it out and are presented with a ball-golf-sized layout, they're not going to think it's very much fun. But give them a set of short teepads -- or better yet with a course this size, two sets of shorter pads -- and you may have gained a new DG convert or two.

And let's not forget, not everyone out there is 20 something still living under the "I'm undestructable" motto, with power to spare; some of us are old farts who have played this game for decades and just don't have the raw power of you young cannons. We're not "babies" my friend, we're the elder statesmen of the game, show some respect whippersnapper...;)
What I will be interested to see is if they use the three par 3s, four par 4s, and 2 par 5s per nine. That's what we old farts miss, the strategy of playing the terrain, not just birdy or die. Either way, it'll be nice to have a new course...well done.

And yours is the exact attitude that irritates the hell out of me. It seems to tell every beginning, intermediate, woman, or junior golfer "Sorry, you're not welcome here because you are not good enough. Go to Rockwood, and please come back when you can throw 400'".
Personally, I'm excited as hell about this and every new course in our area. I'm looking forward to playing this course, especially in tournament play. I probably won't play it often, but only because of geography. I can get to Meadow Ridge, Stub Stewart, or Pier in less than 1/2 the time.
I'm curious to see where anything I have ever written discourages anyone from playing more difficult courses. I will gladly own up to encouraging more difficult courses, but nothing like what you are implying. I would like nothing more than courses for ALL skill levels.

(Update) Thanks for the idea Scott. I sent emails to Steve Kruger or Stub Stewart State Park, Alex Salazar of Portland Parks as well Bob Horning from Horning's Hideout requesting their feedback on the impact of disc golf in their facilities as well as their experiences working with Stumptown Disc Golf.

Like Stub, if you throw 300 or even 250 pretty well you will be able to score better than someone who cannot control a 400' shot. This will apply to all divisions.

Well, Matt, I think if you read this thread, you'll learn a lot. :) There are people in the disc golf community whose priority is getting more very long "pro-level" courses, and others who want to see more shorter family-friendly courses. Actually, I think almost all of us would like to see more of each kind -- the tension comes when the discussion is about the specific future of any individual course.

It's has always been the idea for multiple tee's. Different tees wil be nice for drop zones and still be fun shots for everyone.
Flash
January 6th, 2011, 10:48 PM
Everyone should be concerned about safety especially in a setting like this. Multiple tees that are obscure from longer tees will create confusion and safety issues. Go to any ball golf course and you will see my point. There are multiple tees but all are color coded and visible from each other. If shorter tees at the Blue lake course are not visible from the longer tees safety will be a concern
There are ball golf courses of all sizes surround Portland and if you go to any one of them you will find people of all skill levels playing on them. They will play from what ever tee the feel like, not based on skill. I believe the same is true for Disc Golf. The length of the hole does not deture people based on skill but based on factors that have to do with exertion and flow. If people have to walk 100 feet or more to a different tee pad and they just watched someone else throw from the longer pad most will follow suit.
I understand Adams and Scott's points but how many different pads are at Hornings on any given course? As far as I know there is one and the place is busy all the time. Milo has two sets of tee pads and majority of the time that I am there I see people playing from the longs even though their skill level suggests otherwise. I am not against multiple tees I just don't want to see something like Steili where there are multiple ways to play the course but are obscure at times from each other.
If everyone gets involved and helps I am sure all attitudes and playing styles can be represented in this course.
Metro parks and Blue Lake also offered a section of the park inside the park in the Northwest Corner awhile ago that would make for a fun shorter course with average hole lengths of 260-280. Maybe they still will allow for this after the initial course goes in.

If the course is too long or difficult, it won't become a destination course. It should have Pro and Am tees. There are reasons why we like to play McIver, Pier, and Timber... A new course should have all the qualities that these current courses deliver. If the new course could help bring Worlds here - yea baby.

Steve,
In the tournament layouts at Milo the east and west are both 8000+ feet in distance on their own.
Metro is going to put 2 bridges in

I was kind of wondering about that too.
I have heard great things about Stumptown, and have been consistently impressed by the clubs work, but on the subject of the Blue Lake course; my motivation to be at the meeting came from the work Dave has done, and as far as I know most of the people that made it to the meeting came as a result of info received here in the forum and or Dave.
Not that it really matters all that much, but if you give Stumptown credit for something they didn't do then you deny credit to the person that did, and that sucks for the person that has put in the time and effort.

Guys. Seriously. This should not even need to be said, but it clearly does. No one at Stumptown is trying to steal anyone's thunder, so there is absolutely no need to be hyper-sensitive. We ALL have the same objective and we ALL need to keep our eye on the prize... and that is getting this course installed.
Jaemes... A lot of the people who showed up at that meeting were Stumptown members, including three current, and one previous member of the board. Other than bringing a letter of recommendation from Horning's Hideout and a ranger from Stub Stewart State Park, did we try involve ourselves at any time? Nope. We were there strictly to SUPPORT Dave & Metro.
When Metro first contacted Stumptown, we were obviously excited about the project, and we offered to provide whatever assistance Metro, Fairview and Dave Feldberg needed with the project. Period. To imply anything otherwise is misleading. So please, lets all remember we're on the same side here and stop with the infighting.

I stand corrected. I apologize to anyone who's feelings may have been hurt by me misunderstanding who to give credit too. I am a Stumptown member, and I yelled the meeting at the tops of the hills to anyone I knew because of that reason alone. I must be the only one. While I respect Dave very much, we don't hang out together, and he did not call asking me to join the meetings. Stumptown members did. So when I saw a room full of Stumptown members I knew at both meetings, I assumed Stumptown brought together the people to support the course. Again forgive erroneous credit of thanks to those who do not deserve it.
Lots of volunteer work, sponsorship, and community involvement still needs done. This course is a group effort by the disc golf community if it will succeed. In addition we need all of the disc golfers on board and excited to help, and to assure the future success. The worst thing that could happen to this course is a select few who feel elite, trying to alienate instead of instruct the newer people looking to help. If someone on this forum desires to set me straight on my facts send me a PM instead of vague comments. I would love to get the whole back story to assure I don't make the same mistake twice. Again I sincerely apologize for the error.

It shouldn't even cost that much to install unless there is serious earthmoving, should it?
Edit: I read the article. $60-100 K to install, and $30 k annually for maintenance! Holy Crap! Is the expense in the movable trees? I can only stand in awe of you folks up North and your ability to get these courses approved and installed! You guys are kicking some serious ass.
We haven't had a new course in Eugene in 30 years. The City has a full set of baskets in a garage somewhere, and we've already volunteered to do all maintenance work minus garbage removal and maybe 12 hours of annual mowing and we STILL can't get them to let us install a course!

It is the culmination of years and years of patience with Dave Feldberg and others working with Metro to get it to this point. There is no guarantee that the Metro Council will approve the funding of this, however, the reality is that even with the high estimates of $100K and $30K maintenance this is a small amount to pay for a huge improvement to vacant land.
It is amazing how expensive it is for government to build things. The parking lot, bridges, benches and trees to shield the neighbors from the parking lot will cost the most. Typically baskets, tee pads, and signs should cost around $10-$15K ($600-$800 per hole) for an 18 hole course.
It is a good reminder of how we all need to keep pushing our local parks departments, and other public and private land owners to consider the benefits of installing a disc golf course. It takes time, persistence and patience working with government but our work today will have payback in the future!

Waiting on Metro
Wog
February 11th, 2011, 11:34 PM
A point of clarification for those of you waiting for an announcement of work parties. The last meeting was the Land Use Planning board for the City of Fairview. Their job is to look at all new development in the city and make sure that it meets zoning regulations and other land use criteria. Metro brought their proposal to build a disc golf course to the council and they approved their request with a few minor changes stipulated.
Since then Metro has been working to make the minor changes, i.e. trees around the parking lot to keep neighbors from having to look at our ugly cars. Metro has also been working with their lawyers to draw up paperwork to allow sponsors to give them money in exchange for advertising at the park. They are now preparing an RFP (Request for Proposals) to secure that sponsorship money.
Once they have that completed then they will finalize the budget and then there is one last MAJOR hurdle. The team that has been working on this project has to take their budget to the Metro Council and ask them to fund the project. Since the council asked them to draw up this proposal one could assume that they are in favor of the course, however, they may (or may not be) surprised when they see the final budget request. It is possible that the budget request may be rejected and/or they may ask for another lower budget proposal.
After that approval is in place then we can start having some work parties.
Patience...Patience...Patience.

All in all, I would say it went pretty well. We had about a dozen or so people out working for about 4-5 hours. With Tyler Christensen's direction we cleaned out a considerable amount of Blackberry brambles and other misc thorn bushes from several fairways. Of course there is obviously a lot more work to be done, but it was nice to see people starting to get excited about the course.
Now we just have to wait for Tyler to announce the next work party.

I definitely agree with this.
Creating a long hole that allows for short arm opportunity and long arm opportunity is definitely a bonus. There are ways to do it I believe. If every hole is a chance for a roller or a long bomb it takes out an element of competitiveness. Creating a risk/reward scenario for long arms keeps the shorter arms in reach of competing playing it safe.

I don't know what the initial plans are, but I agree on PRO and AM pads for the longer holes - like McIver. At least you can have flexibility in choosing the level of difficulty during casual play.

What can we do to encourage Metro?
What Paperwork is waiting for Approval?
Who currently has the paperwork at their desk that we need to visit, call, or email?
What item, budget line, or person has stopped this course from moving forward?
Are we currently helpless, or could we politely and persistently push this forward more then we have?
What can We (and or) I do to make this happen?

Last I talked to Tyler Christenson it was waiting on more funding I think. He knows more of the details. Basically it's held up with Metro bureaucracy. Tyler and Dave Feldberg have been anxious to get this moving but it's not really rolling very quickly. I wish I had better news.

At this point, the best thing that everyone can do is quite simply be patient. Any attempt to "push" this along could potentially backfire on us.

Bullseye was the one running this work party. So I consider him the authority, but here's what I saw while there Saturday:
4-Tee pads poured (They look Great! Literally they are huge, I think 5'x12')
Hole #17, I believe, cleared out (Difficult to get numbering down yet, old map says 14). That is gonna be one long, tight, tough hole.
A bunch of people showed (my count over 15?) and worked hard, lots of progress was made
I had a chance to walk a few (potential) holes cut out of the grass and woods, This course is gonna be so nice, I cannot wait. But I believe we still have a lot of heavy lifting and work parties to go until we can all enjoy this new destination course. But several people smarter than me had mentioned most of the clearing needed is almost done.
I hope that helps

Thank you to everyone who came out. This was an awesome work party. The tee pad team was working like a machine. They had three of the four tee pads framed-up and ready when the concrete truck pulled up at 10:00am, and the last one pad was being framed. All of the the tee pads are 6' x 12", and as Josh said, they look great.
We also cleared out a 60' wide swath, about 400' feet long to create the 2nd half of 17s fairway. Not only did we clear the area out, but almost all of the debris was hauled up to the pathway, where it can be easily hauled away by Metro.

Well folks...
This is it. The grand opening for the disc golf course at Blue Lake Park is tomorrow (8/15) at 11:00am.
If possible, come on out and join us as we cut the ribbon and open the course up for play. If you can't make it tomorrow, come on by when you can and enjoy the fruit of many, many hours of hard work.
On behalf of Stumptown Disc Golf and Next Adventure, I would like to thank the following people for hours and hours of hard work and dedication to this project. Without their help this would have been an almost impossible task.
Tyler Christensen
Carl Thorne
Kevin Mykelz
Murray Prictor
Josh Dearing
Jeremy Fancher
Bryan Knudsen
A lot of people have showed up to our work parties and I am very thankful for that, but these guys went above and beyond the call of duty. Hopefully, every time they walk into Blue Lake Park they feel the sense of pride they deserve for helping to make it happen.
As for park hours, google is your friend, learn to find out information for yourself by using it...

I did that already: park hours are indeed 8am to sunset but since there is no lighting out there I was just wanting to make sure they didn't want us out of there sooner than that.

Then how are park goers supposed to know this? Unless there is a sign that states otherwise or a park ranger to tell you differently, 8 am to sunset is all you can go on. Sunset tomorrow night is officially 8:19 pm.
This whole idea of idea of "unwritten rules" is a crock. We had an argument about this very subject with another disc golfer just last weekend who took umbrage that we were playing the genius hole in casual play. If the park doesn't want us to play that tee pad, then a sign stating as much would be the least they could do to insure we didn't play it.

They didn't specifically say not to play that hole? Were you not clued in by the fact that there is no basket there? Seems to be implied, at the very least.

This is true. The rangers really don't want people playing the genius hole when there is no basket in the ground.
No, they're not likely to say anything to you, but why push our luck? At the moment, we have a very good working relationship with the rangers at Milo, but why put that at risk?

And here is the crux of the matter as far as I am concerned. Who is they? When did they say it? Who was there when it was said? If it is an official decision, shouldn't there at least be a sign to let the people who weren't there know about the decision?

Funny thing about that, you can play an awesome par 5 hole to the basket by the bathrooms very nicely. So nicely that I got a 4 last time I played it...
Sure the BSF layout pin isn't in its place, but that hole was played to the regular course basket long before the BSF pin was placed in the ground...
All I am asking for is a small sign...not everybody comes to this forum and reads these posts, or has a reliable memory, or is sober enough to remember...
Oh, and for the record, I always ask to play the regular tee pad but get outvoted every time by my group.

I am going to go with the concept that the opening is tomorrow, Weds 15 Aug 2012, not today, Tues 14 Aug 2012.

I'm with Jeff on this one. If anyone knows of a courtesy requests anyone has made (rangers, city officials, even neighbors) about a course we should try to accommodate if it's reasonable or we risk losing our courses. How many "it's been fun but ________ is closed" posts have we seen this year?
