View Full Version : Is there a script for dealing with ancient scrip?

I was wondering how some of you TD's/vendors deal with scrip that doesn't get used up at or soon after an event.
How long do you peeps honor these certificates of indebtedness?

If it doesn't have an expiration date I would think until who ever issued it files for bankruptcy or goes out of business. Scrip is really a form of credit issued by the tournament paid to (or will be paid to) the vendor(s) named on the scrip upon redemption.

Is there a NYSE (New York Scrip Exchange)? Maybe your old scrip has gone up in value.

You can always try to contact the organization that issued the scrip to make sure it’s still good.

On a side note... all ams out there don't be jerks and horde scrip... It makes balancing the books tough and often becomes obsolete as new folks take over running tournaments an stuff like that. It is almost always better for all involved if you spend your scrip at the tournament that you win it at.

This is a very important detail. We have a wonderful relationship with Next Adventure, but expecting them to keep track of YOUR scrip indefinitely is a bit absurd. If you have scrip... USE IT. If you are saving up for something big, then contact the people in charge and ask them if you can hold it for a while. That way you know it wont expire AND they know what to expect.

Better to settle for whatever useless crap the vendors have on hand rather than wait for them to get something practical. God knows that will never happen.

Thanks for pointing out another nice thing about Next Adventure... you can use your scrip on whatever you want in their store; shoes, a tent, rain gear, discs... whatever. If you go home with something useless... you shop poorly.

This is the reason that some folks horde the scrip from Next Adventure; lord knows I don't win any to horde myself. However, before the 30-day expiration they allow you turn it into a gift card, which is then accounted for in their books. Bam, tent! Bam! Skis! Bam! Boots! BAM!

I'll remember that in the event that I ever win scrip for Next Adventure.

And Kudos to NA for being the reliable retailer that they are.
They are definitely an exception to the rule.

Though I wasn't all that excited when I first realized Next Adventure scrip had an expiration date (though the gift card set-up is nice), it's certainly better than tournaments where you have to redeem scrip onsight, I've had numerous tournaments where I've been forced to purchase Innova discs, <shudder> because the TD assumed that everyone just threw that one brand.

I feel scrip for PDGA events should have an expiration date of 1 year to date. If you have scrip from last years event it has to be redeemed by the end of the following years event. That way TD's can clear their books from previous years events.
Exceptions to the rule IMO would be smaller tiered events....
For example, the Willamette Valley Winter Series Scrip is going to be good through April 30th 2011. This way we can clear the books and move on to the larger Summer events. Friendly reminders will be issued as the date comes closer. This gives players over 40 days from the last Series event to contact myself or the Eugene Disc Golf Club to redeem.
We have records of each scrip voucher issued and redeemed. This way we know who has scrip remaining after each event. Inevitably we will run into a few stragglers. Lengths will be taken to ensure anyone with unused scrip have the opportunity to shop before the deadline.

A year is WAY too long in my opinion. Why should TDs have to track this stuff for over a year because people are to busy/lazy to cash in their scrip. I hate loose ends and this would definitely qualify.

Nicely done Jeff. Way to take a negative comment, flip that beeotch, and come out on top. Props -

Next adventure kicks ass. I won 3-4 discs worth of scrip from them but had to take off before the final nine was over. I live 4 hours away so not really worth the trip for just the discs. I sent them an email with the kind of discs I might like and they shipped me some very nice plastic. I was pleasantly surprised they went out of their way for me. Their food kicks ass too. I hope they expand up here in Seattle, so we can reap the benefits too.

From my experience, It seems to really depend on the TD/Club you are working with and if you know the person/people. Better yet, it seems to depend whether they "know" you.
I've had great experiences redeeming scrip from:
Dave Pittman
Yose
Hagerty
However, I've had difficulty redeeming my 2010 Eugene Celebration scrip?
A private message to the TD has been seemingly ignored.

I just think that there should be no reason a person can't redeem their scrip for a full year. We as the vendors already have the full value of the scrip on hand from the entry fees gathered....So in the mean time we can get new inventory on hand and maybe have more to choose from than we did at the actual event......
It's up to the player's to redeem scrip immediately at the event or come back and get their payouts in a timely manner. The tournament isn't going to be effected by misplaced scrip...In fact we end up making more in the long run if they don't redeem it (obviously)....The only way this could be an issue in my opinion is if the club or individual running the event misused the funds and failed to keep an appropriate amount of inventory on hand to choose from.
I know it takes a lot of organization but I feel that's where we need to get to. We should all have a pretty good understanding of how to make a quick spreadsheet in this day and age.....

I guess we can agree to disagree on this one, because I sure as hell won't be tracking peoples' scrip on a spreadsheet for a year. Use it or lose it, people.

Thanks to all for some input.
Now, I'm curious as to how some of the scrip possessors feel about scrip and it's use.
Thanks again.

I like to hang on to scrip for a while, not a year, but long enough to cash in for something worth while. I just used scrip to pay my PCDGA club dues through August 2019!

I am no good at Disc Golf, but when my better half (Jody) wins scrip we have a hard time getting back to N/A to use it in time. I am really glad to hear about the gift card idea. Thanks Next Adventure for all you do to make events so awesome.

I have a varied opinion on this matter. Scrip should be redeemed as soon as possible, but it is the TD's responsibility to keep track of it, it's easy, only takes one added tab on the excel file. But scrip should not be held on to forever, but there are some circumstances that occur and prevent a smooth redeeming of scrip at an event awards ceremony from happening. Like a player living far away from home (3-10 hours away) and the awards isn't for another 2-4 hours cuz of flight setup, then it is up to the player and TD to communicate to complete the transaction at a later time, but then again we know not all TD's are great communicators. Then there are some players who must leave as soon as they hole out the last hole to get back to their families and cannot wait around for another 1-2 hours like most players can. Are we to hold these players to the same "30 day use it or lose it" policy?
I had to leave the slosh at Hornings immediately after holing out and turning in the score card because I had sick family needing me back home; now I won scrip to NA, does that 30 day policy apply to me? I hope not since I hope to make the 2nd Slosh and be able to get my 1st Slosh's scrip there, but that is more than 30 days apart. Just using this as an example and I am sure with an email to the TD of the Slosh, this situation would be an example of using good communciation, which I know the TD is capable of, however, not all TD's are like this.
So, its up to the player to use scrip ASAP, up the the TD to keep track of it, up to the player to communicate with the TD to use if if situations come up, up to the TD to screw the player over by not communciating? heh... But for sure one thing, I am not supportive of a scrip that expires so soon, one year is a bit excessive as well, I would think something like 90-120 days is fine if the TD hears nothing from the player? I dunno... I've had my share of chasing down TD's for months just to get at least part of my scrip redeemed...

I have to disagree that it is up to the TD to keep track of scrip. I feel that scrip is like money and if I loose it than oh well. With that being said, I think scrip should be good for no less than 6 months from the date of the event. I think series events should honor scrip for at least a year.
