Last time Stumptown had an event at Dabney Andrew Rich tore it up and killed the field. Check it out here. He didn't appear to make any mistakes. Look at the final score for 2 rounds can you imagine shooting that well?

We are asking for all participant to bring lanterns if they have them, also if you have portable propane heaters bring them as well. We will attempt to make the scoring area brighter and as warm as possible. We hope to have a way to make hot water on site so bring your coffee and hot chocolate and lets get some disc golf on.

I don't think I have any plans for this day. I will bring out my big double burner propane stove and make coffee and hot cocoa for the troops. Bring coffee cup.

Do I understand this right? I have to be a Stumptown Member, a 2011 Stumptown member to be able to win script?

I would like to play and I would like to win something if I am able to play well enough but at this time, I don't wish to join a disc golf club.

You only have to be a Stumptown member to be eligible for the $250 ace pot that is put up by Next Adventure in Next Adventure script. Top placing ams win script from Next Adventure, and you don't have to be a Stumptown member to win this script.

Sure.

They'll pick up a stroke or two on the field.
They'll also get that warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with getting an ace.
They'll get the admiration of everyone on their cards. Lots of back slaps, and a few signatures on their disc, too.

They'll also get some headaches after doing this :headbang: because they didn't pay $10 to support a club that does great things for disc golf.

I keep thinking about this. It bugs me.

Someone is putting up an ace pot to a C tier tournament but I have to be a member of a particular Disc Golf club to win said ace pot.

I have nothing bad to say about this (or any) Disc Golf club nor about anyone who sponsors a Disc Golf tournament. Just the opposite!

BUT if I pay my entry into a tournament (and extra if not PDGA member), why must I also be a member of said Disc Golf club. My Paid entry is not enough?

Yes, Membership is cheap but not the point. And yes, club membership should have advantages but this seems to be … I don’t know … a club tournament not a PDGA tier C tournament put on by a club.

Another thing, script is be supported by the same sponsor as the sponsor of the ace pot, not the Disc Golf club. This appears that the sponsor and club have a “thing” going on. Nothing wrong there but leaves a funny taste in my mouth. Is that what the sponsor and or the club are working toward? I don’t think so but that is my feeling.

Really, I’m not bashing. It’s just that I keep thinking about this and it feels a tiny bit more like half empty than like half full.

That being said, I had a blast at one of last seasons Slosh tournaments and had my one and only ace. I did not know that there was an ace pot but I was contacted later and sent my split. I was really on cloud nine to sneak a Pro Cobra into hole 14 during a tournament but it was really cool that Stump Town Disc Golf made sure that I got my part of the ace pot. Thank you again!

Sincerely,
Phillip Kurtz (PhilStomp)

I completely understand the point you are making, however I think you've missed a few facts that might sway your opinion a bit.

First off, the club and Next Adventure definitely "have something going on" and we're not only happy about it, but we advertise it. This is no secret. It is, however, a very good thing for both the club AND the players. Win-Win with no losers in the deal.

On the scrip side of things. Stumptown has dealt with a number of different companies when issuing scrip, but more often than not it is for Next Adventure. Why? Because they not only do things like the above ace pot, but they also very often throw in additional swag (water bottles, towels, etc...) for us to include in the players packs. They also give us an excellent deal for our scrip as another means of sweetening up the pot for the amateur players. Every time we run a tournament Next Adventure gives us an extra thirty cents on the dollar to add to that scrip total. So everyone gets a little bit better payout. How is this not awesome?

As for the Ace Pot...

I guess I should preface this with the fact that 9 times out of 10 tournament ace pots are optional. The ace pot fund is usually a separate fee during registration that is in addition to the cost of entering the tourney. There is usually a little check box that says... Do you want to put in an additional $1 for ace pot? I'm not sure exactly how we did it on the last Slosh, but that is usually how we set up the registration. We did not offer that for this years Slosh series because Next Adventure offered us the $250 Ace Pot.

How did this deal come around? At our last club meeting we were discussing the upcoming Slosh series as well as ways to motivate people to renew memberships for the upcoming year. At this point Bryan from Next Adventure said "I'll make a $250 Ace Pot available for anyone who has renewed their membership for 2011". Thats it.

So our motivation was very clear, we wanted to get people to renew and Next Adventure generously offered to throw in something to help motivate them to do so. There was and is no diabolical plan here... just a bunch of people trying to put on cool tournaments... for YOU.

I'd also like to suggest that you drop by one of our club meetings if you have any doubts, questions or concerns about how Stumptown operates. We definitely prefer it when people come out and see what we really are all about so they can form an educated opinion of our club. Plus, we can always use a few more people willing to step up and help out.

I hope this clears things up for you.

well said, hagerty, well said.

phil, as someone who golfed for years (and i mean years... many, many years...) without being a member of anything, it makes me feel nothing but good to be a member of stumptown. stumptown does an amazing amount of everything for this thing that we love called disc golf... we all want disc golf to prosper and for there to be more, more, more of what we love... more courses, more tournies (if you're into that stuff)... just more golf, and in the portland area, dude, stumptown and next adventure are such a staunch supporters... they really make it happen... all i do is pay 'em 10 bucks... and they make it happen and they make just about everything more awesome in my world of disc golf... if only i could just pay anybody 10 bucks and have such awesome stuff happen... here you go, West Oregon Electric, 10 bucks, now let's have no more week long power outages. here, propane company, 10 bucks. warm house all year long. here you go, obama, 10 bucks. fix the country. c'mon, phil, 10 bucks... and you get a laminated card you can break into your neighbor's house with (of course, i had her permission... i am not condoning burglary...)

peace,

Phil, I generally take a Groucho Marks stance to joining clubs, however as a disc enthusiast since 1971 I have always supported local clubs, and am an original Stumptown member. Having said that I must include that I rarely play tournaments of any kind, and won't be playing any of the Slosh series. However, the monetary benefits I received alone in 2010 from NA for being a SDG member paid for the membership price many times over. I support the club and its partnership with NA, it has done nothing but paid benefits to the greater PDX DG community. I can respect your questioning of the connections, but rest assured there is no ulterior motive by either party. However, if you are looking to participate in a tournament that will be conducted at the highest level, a SDG tourney is for you. Go, play, have fun, keep the drama on the stage.

Hey Phillip,
Perhaps you could get an ace pot side bet going.
Or maybe ask the TD to.
I'd be willing to bet that if you asked folks if they wanted to chip in a buck or two you'd get a few takers. :wink2:
Or better yet, join up and get some side bets going too.
Heck, I live 200 miles south of Stumptown and I'm probably going to join.
In all of the years I've been around this stuff, the Stumptown DGC has stepped up and been very proactive towards the disc golf movement more than any other club that's been around.
I'd like to help support that, if they'll have me.
FWIW, I still think Sam is a Bagmeister.

In all seriousness. I take this as a huge compliment. It is very nice to be recognized by one of respected veterans. For whatever reason, it has been a difficult task to crack the ice with many long-time players. Thank you.

It's obvious that the SDGC is on a good path for promoting the sport and themselves. It's the professionalism of clubs like this that will show the general public that disc golf is a lot more than just hippies throwing frisbees in the park.
So, I hear you say there's been some ice cracked?
Maybe it just goes to show what testing the frozen waters might do sometimes eh?

It does and I thank you for the information / insight.
I really do hope that I'm not taken the wrong way here. Not trying to stir up drama.
Had some thoughts, sent them out and got some answers...good stuff.

Sincerely,
Phillip Kurtz

Looks like we are in store for a whomping good time. Remember if you have a propane heater and can bring it let Jeff or I know. I have a spare Propane tank we can use but I will not bring it unless I know we will use it. We are also looking for tarps to use around the pavilion to keep the cold wind and rain out while we do the scoring and such. If you have any tarps we can use bring them PLEASE.

Don't forget to bring a change of sock and clothes in case it rains during the rounds. A hot beverage and food sounds nice as well.

Hopefully I'm posting this correctly..

Trying to get some information on the mando on hole 15. Is it only in effect for dabney doubles or is it a course mando?(not posted on the tee sign)

Also I've heard if you miss it, you don't have to take a drop and you play from where your disc lies and add a stroke.

I would love some clarity on the issue.

Thanks all!

For safety reasons we will be making this one a mando.

If you miss the mando you must move to the drop zone (the mando tree), take a penalty and throw from there.

FYI: What you heard regarding mandos is almost never the case.

It seems strange that an event in 2010 would take a 2011 membership. I understand that it is a series and if you played all events it would not really be any different and you would get a membership to boot. If I were a current member that would seem a little unfair if I did not wish to be one for 2011. Nothing against N.A. or S.T. they are doing wonders for our sport.
I have lots of tarpage. I'll bring some.

I'm not sure what your concern is, since no one is requiring anyone to join Stumptown for 2011. The membership requirement is only for people who expect to hit the Next Adventure Ace Pot. As I posted HERE (http://www.nwdiscgolfnews.com/forum/showpost.php?p=84087&postcount=39)earlier, the whole point of the ace pot was to motivate people to renew memberships for 2011. Allowing 2010 members to win it defeats the purpose.

I've read every post in this thread.
The point being made is that someone with a 2010 membership should be involved with things happening in 2010.
Point being 2010. Were not in 2011.
New members great. They get a bonus.
Current members don't.
It's like the cable company giving new subscibers better rates than current subscribers.
Just my opinion nothing else.

Beat me to the gun!

On to another subject:

Sean also noticed that noticed that Pro Masters payout percentages looked a little weird compared to those in Open. It took me a few minutes to figure out where I made the mistake, but I did find it. I had neglected to enter the cost of the players pack discs from that division's payout.

Here is what I paid out to Pro Masters:

Jeff Cox: $80
Jeff Hagerty: $50
Mike Ward: $40

Total: $170

Here is what I SHOULD have paid out:

Jeff Cox: $45
Jeff Hagerty: $30
Mike Ward: $20

Total: $95

The difference between these two amounts needs to be paid to Stumptown to cover the cost of the discs. Because this was 100% my mistake, I do not intend to ask Jeff Cox or Mike Ward to return any money, since they had nothing to do with the mistake. I will cover the difference out of my own pocket, but I did want everyone to know exactly what happened, why and what is being done to fix it.

Sean, thank you very much for pointing this out. I really appreciate it. To everyone else, I truly apologize for the screw up. If anyone else has ANY questions about this please let me know.

That you would offer to do this makes you one of the most stand-up guys in our community, Jeff. Not only do I feel lucky to have you being willing to step up to do so much for so many but I also feel lucky to consider you a friend.

That said, I am going to be at the next Stumptown meeting specifically to mention that the club should eat this cost as part of the overhead of running tournaments. It's not that much and the club can afford it, I am guessing.

Thanks again for all you do.
