The 9th Big D in the desert (https://www.discgolfvalues.com/BigDIXresults.html) is going on this weekend in Nevada. I saw that Dion put one out there over 700 feet, not too shabby. Garrett Gurthie came about 17 feet short of setting a new world record. It'll be interesting to see tomorrows results, and some vids at some point would be cool too.

So what would that be on flat ground with no wind?

HA! Yeah that would be true. So what's that at sea level without giant tailwinds?

A shot requiring less technique.

Well, let's put it in perspective. At USDGC I threw 591' on mostly flat with zero wind. GG threw 636'. So now I threw on flat (FLATTEST PLACE EVER) with between 10 and 20 mph gusts and go 700 plus several times. It is optimal conditions, undoubtedly.

However, the level of difficulty to execute these shots is a 9/10. Only a handful of human beings on earth are capable of these throws. Ask me to watch your form in person and I will clue you in to your desert distance.

By the way, Ken Jarvis is a freak. He threw 200 meters or more every set. Oh, and him and Marc are not big dudes. maybe 5'10'' / 145 lbs. Sick.

Oregon gets the win. my first World title!!!

What did you throw, Dion? And did any of the Innova pros try to cash in on Discraft's bounty (http://www.facebook.com/DiscraftDiscGolf?v=app_10442206389)?

I know from my own experience, noodle arm notwithstanding, I've hooked up just one good tailwind pull in my career, beating anything else I ever threw by 50 feet. It's damned hard to get it right. Give me a slight headwind any day and I'll make a higher percentage of good throws. I'd like to watch a distance match some time. The longest drive I ever witnessed was into a pretty good headwind. It was done by Cheney, and it made it around the dogleg on #10.

Why does the Innova Discs Facebook page state that Garrett Gurthie won?

Sonic boom heard @ Big D in Desert as Team Innova's Double G, Garrett Gurthie explodes and crushes a 245 meter throw (803.8 feet!). Gurthie's throw earns him the Official Big D in The Desert Title! Double G of Gainesville, Florida, threw a 165 gram R-Pro Boss. The R-Pro Boss is now one of three models (DX TeeBird - 247...m & DX Valkyrie - 250m) to break the 800' barrier. Gurthie was the only competitor to throw over 800 feet. Way to crush em' Double G!

Am I not understanding something?

From the results it looks like he had the longest throw, but failed to qualify for the final round, leaving Dion his opening.

Nice work Dion - were you doing your 360 degree drives?

360s all day long. Everyone but Robbie and Garrett used them, and sometimes Koling didnt do 360s too. Pretty common distance technique, except for those freaks like Robbie and GG. Throw SOOO damn hard, thought the disc was going to rip in half out of there hand.

So, this may be a dumb question, but they had someone on a quad go fetch these things afterwards, right?

I think I'd take a little off if I had to hike all that way to pick up the disc.

There is a team of spotters who are marking where the disc lands (not skips and rolls to by the way, but where it first touches the ground). And another guy on a bike trying to round up all the plastic.

Sometimes they get away though. With the wind and pure flattness of the lakebed, rollers can go infinitely far. I threw a mini disc about 1000 ft on a roll, finally hit the gravel parking lot and stopped. I paced it back at 350 steps to where I threw it from. Doss threw a roller approximately 2 miles according to Double G who chased it down on a bike...pretty nasty.

When I went to Big D in 2008 I dropped a pile of discs and watched a Destroyer flip flop and begin to roll with the wind........It went out of view into a mirage....... It was simply the craziest thing I have ever seen a disc do "by itself".... :)

Haha, we were joking about that this year too...who gets the record for longest non-throw ever?

Hard to imagine unless you have been out there, simply an amazing setting on the lakebed. Wild stuff happens regularly.
