Ok. The dyed discs thread is one of my favorites, so, in hopes of seeing it take off here, I thought I'd start it. This is a disc that ChUcK dyed for me. I don't have it yet, but I am hoping it will be in the mail this week. It's the logo for my favorite Roller Derby team, The Heartless Heathers

Oh, and he dyed it on a Champion Monarch. Can't wait to see it!!!

Started this thread on ODSA a long time ago, and its become the largest thread on there. I know not everyone on here is on ODSA anymore, so I am starting this thread on here for those who are disc dye artists, those who want to learn to ye, and those of you who just like to look at all the pretty discs :)

To start the thread and to remember the day (9/11), I'll start with this dye

I'd suggest two threads - a dyed disc gallery, and a disc dying discussion thread...

September 11th, 2008, 06:40 PM
If I did that. I guarantee pics would be getting posted on both threads. I would most likely be guilty of that as well.

Geezuz, and on the day after my first rounds of disc on a ball course, too! Some guy dropped one in our midst from a blind tee location. When he came over the rise in his golf cart, he apologized for bombing one in on us. We told him it made our game more exciting. No bad vibes were felt.

Lol, nope. But if you want to buy it, I might be able to work out some sort of deal, PM me. ;)

However, the Stormtrooper Dye (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=110296891604) only has two days left, and it's still sitting at $12.99!!! Someone's gonna get a STEAL on that one if ppl don't throw up some bids soon!

@Brody,
The type of disc is not available for public knowledge. Next time I see you I'll let you take a look at it, you might be able to figure it out.

After seeing all the grreat disks on this forum and others, My brother and I thought we would try dying a few ourselves. We decided to see what damage we could do with just red to start. the clear disk was an after thought, about 5 min total work went into that one. should have maybe tryed a bit more ut i was tired and frustrated. I don't think they came out too bad for a first attemt.

If anyone has any tips on removing bleeds, I would greatly appreciate.
I don't know what method you use to dye the plastic. I do the frying pan on the stove method. If you notice the bleed early enough, you can often take 100% acetone and a very soft cloth/rag and remove the bleed. Be careful, of course, not to touch the acetone to any part of the design.

If you're dying translucent plastic this is much easier, you can take a peek at the disc every couple minutes through the plastic, if you notice a bleed, take it out, rinse in cold water, and try to fix it with the acetone if possilbe.

In reality, most of the time prevention is the best medicine. Make sure you don't have any air trapped between the disc and the vinyl, make sure all your cuts end where they should, etc. If you're using something other than vinyl, like contact paper, then you need to start using vinyl!

Hope this helps, let me know if any of that doesn't make sense, this is a process that is easier to explain via example rather than writing.

Wel said, Ryan.

This can't be stressed enough. Take an extra few minutes before dropping the disc to ensure that the vinyl is as perfect as possible. It's worth the time. Trust me.

Thanks to Scott and Ryan for the tip on using vinyl--I had been using contact paper--and will definitely get to using vinyl as soon as I can find it.

Custom dye for Sari in Seattle on a 164g Leopard. This one was actually pretty difficult. When I took the order I figured it would be fairly straight forward. As it turns out, little people (babies, infants, toddlers, etc) don't really have any overly unique features to pull out and emphasize to make them look individual, they don't even have eyebrows!! I think the pirate hat helped me out a lot, and I did some really micro cutting around the eyes that you really can't see in my crappy foto of the disc. All-in-all, I think it turned out well.

Ohh man, I have caught the fever, the disc dyein' fever. So after watching an awesome 20 minute tutorial on how to dye discs by Chuck and one of his buddies, I knew it was time to stay inside and start dyeing. Of course I chose to go out and purchase my materials on Sunday, this was a bad idea as I ended up making do with inferior products because sign shops were not open. I dyed my first disc a max weight Roadrunner with a Thundercats Logo, and some weird squiggly lines over the top for a gayish effect. I didnt have transfer tape, and it worked out okay, and then I spent two hours cutting out a blazers logo, which didn't make the transfer to the disc with out transfer tape, and so I was pissed, but still primed to dye another, so I free handed a wierd H design in honor of my wife Hillary. It also turned out kind of gay, but I was hooked, so I stopped by some sign shops yesterday and got hooked up with tons of vinyl, and transfer tape all for free! Myself, my wife, a buddy Shaun, and his girl Erin spent the next 6 hours or so dyeing a couple of discs each with the right equipment! Oh, man what a difference. I cannot tell anyone who has not tryed this, you are missing out, it is an awesome process, especially when the final product comes out, trust me you will not be able to stop looking at your disc at a variety of different angles, and then the ideas for your next dye start to come in and well, it's awesome. So here are my first dyes... In order 1) Roadrunner w/ Thundercats 2) Destroyer w/ free hand H 3) Orc w/ JAGER 4) Boss w/ Boss 5) Cro w/ Fat Tire.

Now check out my 5th dye, i spent 5 hours cutting this and I am pretty sure it was worth it. I also put it on my favorite disc of all time the willamette open boss that I pretty much throw for 75 % of my drives. @Carlitos:

Nice job on the Jager disc! Great improvement over your first 5 dyes. The only thing is that I would like to see the black dye be darker, it will last longer and resist fading longer, and it's just more powerful of an image that way. Let me know if you need any help in that department. Well done.

@Kel:

Yeah, I remember those days like they were yesterday...oh wait...I'm still like that! Dangit!
I spent about an hour and a half on the cutting and the disc has been sitting on my table for the last two days with the vinyl on it ready for bathing, hopefully tonight or tomorrow morning I'll get it wrapped up. I've got 5 more orders to work on this weekend!

No, I told him I would dye a disc for him for his B-day, and I showed him the prototype that I drew. I think he was a little surprised, but probably not too much, I did a dye for Haley's B-day as well, so he might have been kind of expecting it?

0First tell me how you do it. Times, mixtures, type of dye, etc. That way I know what you need to know! :)
So I have been using rit dye, powder and liquid, I seem to prefer the liquid as i dont have to spend too much time mixing it versus the powder. I am willing to use a different dye if you have any suggestions. Next I put about 4 cups of water to one package/ container of dye, and heat it for a few minutes on medium until it just barely begins to give heat off the top of the surface of the dye, then i take the heat off and touch the side of the pot and make sure it is not too hot, then I tilt the disc at an angle and lower it into the dye, and leave it for 20 minutes and then use semi hot water to wash and peal the vinyl... any suggestions are seriously appreciated. Thanks mang!

I use powdered RIT because it's much cheaper than the liquid. I've used the liquid in the past, and I don't think there is much difference. You can get sharp blacks with either one, if you prefer the liquid, stick with it.

SOLUTION:
I'd say that 4 cups is probably a little too diluted. I use 1 1/2 - 2 cups max. The more water you add, the less potent your solution will be. I have two "dying" pans that I use, both are standard 10" x 2" pans. I usually fill them with approximately 1 1/2" of solution, you don't want the disc to be touching the bottom, obviously, but you don't have too be way far away either.

TIMING & HEAT:
I Always heat the solution to a "heavy steam" level, maybe a minute before it starts to boil. Then I turn off the heat completely and immediately drop the disc in. I let it sit for a couple minutes, pull it out and check for airbubbles, then I immediately put it back in for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes I take it out and check it again to make sure everything is going according to plan. At this point it should be getting dark, but not pure black yet. If everything is still good, I put the heat on a low setting (2/10 or something) and let the disc float on that for 3 minutes, then check, if not dark enough, 2 minutes, check, etc.

The disc will get very warm, and that's ok as long as you are paying attention. Some people might tell you that using this method is an easy way to ruin the disc, and that can be true, if you're not paying attention. I've used this method for all of my dyes, and I've only messed up one disc. That was when I was first starting to dye, and I was goofing around. This will give you PITCH BLACK results.

If you're uncomfortable, try it with a junky disc first!

The way I do it is much the same as others, but here is my specifics. I bring water to a boil. I pour that water into a 2 inch deep tupperware container that fits a disc. whatever color I am using, I only use 1 packet of powdered Rit, and sometimes mix in a bit of liquid dye. I dont use the angled technique as described by others, but i do pick up the disc after a few mins an re soak. i let it soak for an hour or so to achieve the best color, then rinse off and repeat as desired until the color is there.

Hey: Great looking discs. I am an artist and have worked many mediums, curently into wood. This looks very appealing to me and I have been thinking about giving it a try. I have done a little bit of research but found nothing solid. All I seem to find is trial and error methods. Don't care to be waistful because my cash comes as hard as anyone elses. Would there be a chance that you would be willing to share your secrets on the subject? If so great.

I was working on a prototype for Mat Crider's birthday present today and came up with this. It's not actually going to look like this, but I thought it was still pretty sweet art, none-the-less. The actual disc will hopefully still be cool in it's own right.

What I do is print the design onto a regular sheet of paper, and then tape it to the top of the vinyl. Then I cut through the paper/vinyl. It's always worked well enough. I think there would probably be a better way of doing it, but I haven't looked into it.

I smell a trip to Amity in your future??? Miss ya girlfriend:chug:

Well, since Carl decided to put his pride on the line and posts his early attempts at dye jobs I figured I'd do the same. Hopefully, you'll be able to see some improvement from my first (about 1 1/2 weeks ago) to now. Keep in mind these discs have been thrown quite a bit and look like crap to begin with. I'm trying to hone in a bit before I go messing up anything pretty.

This first one bled quite a bit. It's on a champ Boss
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x77/Shaolintrained/DSCN0035.jpg

Next one of Ernesto "Che" turned out better, but I had a little trouble with the lettering.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x77/Shaolintrained/DSCN0037.jpg

I really regret getting in a hurry on this one, because it's the only one that I've used a new disc for. The stamp smeared, etc. Here's the Samurai.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x77/Shaolintrained/DSCN0040.jpg

The cuts on this STAR Gator came out pretty well, in my opinion. Sorry if this offends anyone. I call it "Unplanned Parenthood", but I'm pretty sure it's a Banksy.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x77/Shaolintrained/DSCN0039.jpg

This one just didn't come out very well and I should have scrapped it and tried again, but yeah. It's a Coyote...and it's REAL!
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x77/Shaolintrained/DSCN0038.jpg

Okay, just got done with this one and I'm actually really happy with the way it turned out on a beat Monarch.

Here are two more that have occupied the last two nights, the chain seeker was my first attempt at dyeing non Star or Champion plastic and it shows, they just aren't very vibrant, and I let it sit for 5 hours. But hey at least it is not a plain avair X anymore. The Black with pink, was done on my first and only legit ace disc. I hated throwing a pink disc, but now it should find its way back into my regular weapons. Thanks again to all of those who have offered help, especially tim and chuck for their awesome videos, that really got me started, I am now addicted!

I got the idea by searching google images for optical illusions and found the dye I did but with circles everywhere, Ithought it was cool so I started to do it, but free hand circles suck, so I had to fix them and the only way was to add some detail to the non perfect circles, then I threw in some squigglies to fill the empty space. I am gonna do another one very soon with slimmer lines and really take my time I think it should turn out even more trippy. Thanks

t's on a star beast 172grams... pro wraith, would be a much duller image, i am not sure the pulp fiction dye is worthy of such treatment, then again i have come to the conclusion that a dull non vibrant dyede disc is better than a non dyed disc altogether... hmm

So you would think with all of the holidays and snow/ ice there would be a ton of dyes being done. I found myself a dyeing a couple, and my wife did a quick spongebob. I found a neat rising sun stencil I decided to do, and then I did my second favorite dye job ever. I absolutly loved Rob And Big which is no longer airing new epsiodes, so I did a tribute so they can live on forever on the disc golf course. I made the lettering of Do work blend with the shadows of there shirts, pretty darned cool if I do say so myself, Happy Holidays!

those are some sweet dyes, and the lines are so clean! How do you get the lines so fine? I assume you are handcutting those with the exacto logo and all, so whats your secret? First, thank you for the compliment, it's nice to know my attention to detail is noticed. :)

Secondly, my secret lies in my anal retentive nature. I don't think I do anything differently than other dyers in terms of technique, but I do work fairly slowly and very precisely with my knife. Some of those dyes took up to 4 hours just to cut out.

Hey that still came out pretty cool, and not even close to a ruined dye! Nice work, bummer on the spillage. I have learned that lesson about working with inferior vinyl, it can be done, but when possible avoid it. I was bored watching a lame Rose Bowl, but atleast it kind of felt like our (the beavers) older big brother (Trojans) beet up the bullies today. Anyways I thought this was going to be interesting to look at on a disc, not perfect, but not terrible either.

I got my first 3 colors of the horror disc done. the other 4 or 5 colors are on hold for now. The store I went to, to get my Rit, doesnt sell it anymore. I picked up the new stuff they have. the saleslady told me it was just as good as Rit, so I picked up all the colors i needed to finish the horror dye. Well, this stuff sucks!!! The color doesnt set in at all. So its on hold until i can make it to another store that I know still sells Rit. The stuff is called "iDye". dont waste your time with it.

I have another one in the works though. my normal sickly detailed dye for this one. should be done in a few days.

Looking sweet, May I ask... Isnt Green Darker than Red? And wouldn't that mean that if you now laid down green it would dye over the red? I dont have a lot of experience with multiple colors, as I have only done two colors on one disc. Maybe you wouldn't mind offering some tips, and possibly confirming my suspission of the ROYGBIV color sheme, with Red being the lightest and moving down the line to Violet the darkest? I am clueless, and thanks in advance! Maybe Trozzle who has done some sweet multiple colors could also enlighten me???

The secret to any multi color dye is to of course start with the darkest color, and work your way to the lightest. some of the lighter colors will alter the colors previously dyed. The disc i am doing now is 8 colors total. I only dipped the black and light blue. all of the other colors are getting brushed on to limit the amout of cross coloring.

I just got back from Joanne's and got me some Rit, so its back to business on the horror disc :biggrin2:

Nope. ROYGBV is the order of the hues, not the lightnesses. For example, orange and green are on either side of yellow in the spectrum, but obviously most colors we'd call "orange" and "green" are darker than yellow.

Basically, depending on the colors being used, it is normally black first (darkest). Lets say you are a Duck fan for some strange reason. Your dye is also going to have Green and Yellow in it. obviously Green is darker than yellow, so it would go on second, and then the yellow would come last. Obviously you cant dye white onto a disc, so if you want any of it to be white, get a white disc and leave those ares masked off until the very end.

send me a pic of the disc, or a link to a pic so I can see exactly what you are thinking.

As far as my brushing on technique, I just mix a smaller batch of Rit, and using a paintbrush to apply it. If the design has a lot of black lines seperating the ares i want covered, I paint as close to the black line as I can. Trying not to cross over the line into the area that I want a diff color. sometimes hard to do, so some cross bleeding may occur.

If I am brushing on two different colors, not seperated by a black line, I brush on the darkest color first. when i dye the lighter color next to it, I still paint carefully as close as i can to the darker color, trying not to cross into the area.

I have no exact water to Rit ratio, but basically the thicker the mixture, the easier it is to control it and keep it within the lines.

Quality work, nonetheless. I agree with you - I think the bg makes the whole think look a little cluttered.

You mentioned that you applied the bg by remasking the disc. Did you cut the bg on the disc, or did you pre cut it and have to line it up?

I just thought of a fun idea. If you watch cable TV much, there is a show on there occasionally called Biker Build Off. Each team buils their own chopper and in the end, voters choose their favorite bike. I think it would be fun to bring this idea into the local dye scene. All of local dye artists dye a disc to submit to the voters to decide which is their favorite.

I wouldnt do this to decide who is the best artist around here. No point to that. We all are all great artisits, and o great work in the type of dyes we do. I love Gwillim dyes, Bonitas dyes, Antisocial dyes, Macklins dyes, Vinylguys dyes, and of course my own dyes. There would be no prize for this contest, just all in fun.

Any of you dye artists interested in this type of thing? PM me if you are interested and we can set the ground rules and go from there. My idea is 1 month to come up with your best design to submit to the contest. The disc you dye for it can not be posted on here before the contest deadline. We each submit one design at the end, and voters get to ecide their favorite.

I blame my Deafness, was that supposed to be funny or a rap line by snoop? But a cool disc nevertheless

took me a second too, and being deaf probably doesn't do any favors. you have to say it out loud, and and think of the 70's. and pornography.

That is one bad-ass tutorial.

Do you ever use the "paint-on" method instead of the dip method? I tried it once with less than favorable results. I would love to see a tutorial on that.

Yes I have used the paint method a couple times, there are some important tricks involved, like mixing your dye with another substance to thicken it, most people use laundry detergent and that works well, and also makes the disc smell nice and clean.

I haven't played with that method enough to write a tutorial that I feel would be authoritative, however. Maybe after I play around with it some more.

Thanks for the compliments, fellas!

If you're referring to the disc then the best part is...it's your beauty!

Looking forward to it.

I heard that some mix the dye with Acetone to make it set faster, but all it did was melt the vinyl. You can imagine the rest.

One thing I do when i do the paint on method is too make my mixture fairly pasty, with just the dye and water. I paint on the paste and let it dry completely. I then make it a little wetter and paint the runny dye on top of the dryed up dye. It soaks into the dryed dye and reactivates it. It does take more time cause I have to do it 4-5 times to get the color where I want it normally.

Mix it with rubbing alcohol, of the 99% variety, and it won't damage the plastic.

I dont think too many chemicals used in the dyeing process will melt the plastic unless used wrong. I personally avoid chemicals mixed with the dye because i dont want to take that possible risk. Once I used some Laquer thinner to thin out my dye because it was a dry crusty powder. It did melt the vinyl I was masking with, but didnt damage the disc. It made the yellow coloring in this dye look much better. I think you all remember this one :biggrin2::drool:
