trying to dye right now. I got liquid rit dye mixed 1 full bottle to 1.5 gallon water but the dye is not taking?? been in the drink for 1hr now but nada?? must be the powder dye, it works better I think. I will know in the morning. I'm trying to dye an old ass champion groove. if the liquid rit dont work I'm gona try the powder rit dye.
personally i prefer the liquid over the powder. it sounds like you have the mixture to thin. i use one bottle of liquid mixed with about 1 1/2 quarts of water. works great.
the reasons why i prefer the liquid is that you dont dissolve anything, and i have found that the liquid does not produce as much "sludge" that accumulates at the bottom of the pan while dying. the down side of the liquid is that it is a little more expensive and you cant find as many colors off the shelf compared to the powder.

how much time does it take start to finish to put a name on a disc? with a plotter and without.
Thanks,
Josh
personally i have never worked with a plotter, but i can imagine that if somebody knew what they were doing it would only take a few minutes to have the plotter cut out the letters. by hand it could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the lettering and how steady there hand is.
that is just cutting, the dye time will be the same which would be around 15-25 min to get a real nice dark dye.

DROCK, don't make your dye hotter. More than 120 F or so and you will introduce a whole new set of problems, and the dye uptake rate will be so fast that it will dye through the masking vinyl, which you most likely do not want. Avoid DX, it will just let you down.
Yeah I am starting to perfect the technique. The DX was mostly a starter dye in order to work out the kinks. So far I haven't had it hot enough to dye through the vinyl. I have been trying to work out how to stop the vinyl leaving adhesive. Thankfully the acetone takes it off easily.

I am not a dyer, but I recycle glass jars and bottles and looked for a long time to find what to use to take off label adhesive. Ronsonol (or naptha) does it best.

Remove the vinyl under very warm running water. Peel back a little bit of the vinyl and let the water get in there as you peel back more. They adhesive will melt as they vinyl comes off.

this method will work well, but does have a side effect. as you peel the vinyl off the disc the running water will start to bleed out some of the dye. it is not alot but it is enough to make your nice crisp lines become somewhat fuzzy.
one thing i have found is that the hotter the dye gets the more vinyl residue i have that sticks to the disc. i use goo gone to take off the residue. it does not bleed the dye at all like other products do when applying to the disc after dyeing.

In my experience, the amount of bleeding caused by running warm water over the vinyl while peeling is negligible, compared to the times that I didn't... Prior to peeling under running water, there would occasionally be tiny "beads" of dye that got trapped around the edges of the cuts that would smudge/smear when peeling. By peeling under running water, the tiny "beads" would quickly become diluted and wash away before setting in. Perhaps it's just my opinion on the matter.
I do, however, use something similar to goo gone to remove the leftover tackiness from the vinyl, as warm water alone doesn't entirely dissolve the adhesive. The stuff I use is called krud kutter.

Sorry gonna make you do a little work and follow the link again. Keeping with my theme of classic video games, this disc is Zelda inspired. missed some of the vinyl gunk and it left some spots lighter than others in the tan sections. I also cheated and drew the ears on... so sue me.
I am now out of white discs to dye, I need to win some tournaments and get some script!

All you guys have some amazing dye jobs and that Kermit Yoda dye Was unbelievable, I don't even wanna know how you got the textures down Trozzle. But, I just dyed my first disc and it was a multi color disc. As you can see there are a million things wrong with it. Mostly that I wasn't that concerned with cutting the contact paper precisly as I should. But, the question I have is How do you do multi-layer dye jobs so easily? I can't find a video or get the info anywhere.
I drew the Image on two separate sheets of contact paper and did the Red dye first, then rinsed my disc and the black dye second. I had the hardest time lineing up the second picture with the dye job on the disc. Is there a better way, then shining a bright light from undernieth the disc. Becuase that's what I did and it was still off. Any pointers or helpful info would be nice.
Also Is Champion Candy plastic hard to dye? becuase I used twice as much dye for the black part and left it in the dye twice as long as the Red dye, and the red came out way better. It was my first attemt of many so anything to steer me in the right direction would be awesome.

the only thing really wrong that i see with that disc is there is a guy doing something "unmentionable" to a furry farm animal!:D
but on the serious side, when you do multiple color dyes its always best to do the black first. you do the black first because every other color will not effect the black on the disc( well it might make it darker, but you want it dark right?) you dont have to cover up black when you dye any other colors on the disc. that will make it a bit quicker in the long run. and you dont have to worry about lining up the colors perfectly that are going next to the black.
in my opinion Champion or Z plastic is the best to dye because it holds the image longer before your lines start to get fuzzy. and no matter what you do, every dye will get fuzzy with time. pro plastic is pretty bad for that. i also have found that the red dye that i use sets in much quicker than my black or other colors do. i dont know why becuase i am not a chemist, i just know it does. for the best black make sure to have your dye at a good temperature. i know that ChUck has posted some actuall temperatures on this thread, maybe go back and look for those.
for me i just start dyeing when the dye is steaming nicely. one more tip since you are just starting to dye, be VERY careful with your dye! if you spill it on something, most likely that something will be dyed forever.
hope that helps some.

OK, I apologize about the "one of the worlds best" thing. I was just saying that not many do multicolor dyes like I do, so in a way, I am one of the best. Not saying I am the best. I dont know what everyone dyes like across the nation, or the world.
And Zombie, I cant give away all of my secrets, but as far as the texturing goes, its about using the same color over and over. Painting it on different areas, and timing that part of "soak" time to establish the correct color you want for that area.

And Zombie, I cant give away all of my secrets, QUOTE]
I know you cant give away everything, but can you give me a hint on how you cut out your designs and place them on your discs? What I don't understand is how do you get your vinyl cut-outs to the disc? Do you put the vinyl on the disc and cut out your design, and risk scratching your disc up? Or do you cut it then place it on the disc and eye it? or do you cut it out and use transfer tape to put the image on the disc? and if you use transfer tape, how do you get it on the transfer tape? That is what I am struggling with.
I watched a video on youtube where these guys did a multicolor "scarface" dye using transfer tape, the only problem is they skipped the hardest step, cutting the image out and getting it on the transfer tape. :headbang:
Anybody care to give away one last secret?
Tim
May 17th, 2011, 09:08 AM
Friendly narrator of said video here. Not sure what the issue is--cut out the design on the vinyl, weed away all the parts you're not going to use, and put the transfer tape on top of it. Remove the backing from the vinyl, move the whole thing over onto the disc, the vinyl sticks to the disc more than the tape. Make sure you smooth out any bubbles. Peel off the tape and you're ready to dye.
Did you watch both tutorials (pink biohazard as well as the Scarface)? Between the two, I think we got the necessary steps.
TYVEK
May 17th, 2011, 09:14 AM
when i very first started, i was using contact paper and would trace the design on the contact paper. then would put it on the disc and cut it on the disc. not the best way by any means, but when you are working with contact paper most transfer tapes will be to sticky to work with transfering your cut image to the disc.
after breaking down and ordering vinyl (white is the easiest to work with) off ebay my practices have changed. what i do now is find the design i want, then make it the right size on the computer or copier. i lay that on my light table(home made and inexpensive to make) then lay a 11"x11" square of vinyl over the top with the backing side down. once i have the design centered on the square of vinyl i tape them together so the design wont move around underneathe the vinyl. next i start cutting out all the parts of the design that i want black.
if it is a multicolor dye i will take a fine sharpie and draw the lines where other colors will go later on. after all the black parts have been cut, i remove the vinyl from those places. then i put on the transfer tape covering the whole design(i use blue painters tape because i can get it really cheap) once the transfer tape is on i take off the design from the back and slowly pull the backing off of the vinyl square. once the backing is off i put the vinyl down sticky side up. if the disc is clear then i can line up the design with the disc easily and lower the disc down on the desing by only holding the rim. if the disc is not clear then i trace a circle on the vinyl with the disc before i do any of the above steps. that way you can use the circle to line up the disc with your design.
once i have lowered the disc onto the vinyl, i give it a good press to help get as much vinyl adheared to the disc as possible. then i will flip it over and start working all the air bubbles out towards the sides of the disc using a credit card or something like that. then wrap any ecxess vinyl around the egdes of the disc and its ready for the dye bath!
i know that is a long explanation, but it should be pretty detailed.

If you take a fine sharpie and draw the lines for the other colors, doesn't the black Dye completely make it impossible to see the lines for the second color? And do you cut the second and third color out of the existing vinyl that has already been dyed to the disc or, do you cut it out from another fresh piece of vinyl? Sorry to bother you. Question? is there an after dye treatment that keeps the image from bleeding?
I ask due to my dye jobs bleeding dye a couple of days after the image has been dipped. The discs that I had philman and others do haven't had the image bleed or blur, or not yet anyway. I had my vinyl cut for me and I used powder rit dye at about 120f for 10? minutes. I then washed the disc in cold water.
The worst bleeder is my green champ groove with my DGOD logo. Just a black dye. Also the disc I keep next to the groove in my bag has image transfer on it. So even after 3 weeks its stil bleeding dye.

i use white vinyl and even after several "dips" in black the vinyl is only a grey color, so it is pretty easy to see the sharpie lines. if i am doing a 2 color dye then i will just cut out peices from the vinyl on the disc and then dip it in the color. if it is more than 2 colors then i will cut some off the disc, dye the color then cover that up with peices of new vinyl and cut other spots for the next color. if you ever cut on the disc, a very very important thing to remember is that with a "sharp" blade it only takes a feather touch to cut the vinyl. if you press to hard you will make marks on your disc.

as far as i know there is no "after dye treatment" for this.
the only thing i can think of is that it might not be getting rinsed enough after you dye it. also i have found that it is best to let the dyed disc just sit for a few days to help the dye really set in.

And Whalekillah Thats an epic disc. I've watched the video twice on youtube for that Dye job. Having Tony Montana on a disc gives you extra power. I read that somewhere")
Nice ace! Your dye job reminds me of a GWAR song I think? But the action portraid was ok?

Ok well I didnt let my discs sit for awhile before use. I will try that on my next dye job. By the way the mushroom dye TREX did for me is still clean as the day I got it back, thats why I asked...
i think that the plastic that the mushroom dye is on has ALOT to do with the dye still being crisp. the sparkle plastic that discraft puts out and their crystal plastic it at the top of my list of plastic that i like to dye. also the Opto plastic from latitude is next to the top quality wise for holding dyes longest.

WHAT!! are you kidding me? It was my extreme and time consuming attention to detail and proficiency in the dye process that keeps "that" dye looking like new. NOT!
It's totally the plastic like Tyvek said. I stick with champion/sparkle most of the time for that very reason. I see some dyes I did a year or so ago and they look great because of the plastic. I also see a lot of faded dyes. It's hard to tell people who hand you a cetain disc they want done that it wont stay crisp for long, but most of the time they dont care. Be choosy if you want it to last.

Any thoughts on putting the disc in a freezer immediately after pulling from the dye bath? I've read other people suggesting that it helps to cure the dye/help it set-in... I've only recently begun doing so, and haven't experienced any noticeable difference yet...

That graphic has many shades and shadows in it. I use the newest version of Corel draw on it and it had over 125 colors in it. If I was you I would recreate it. The circles and lettering is very easy to remake. The rest is tracing by hand with the free hand tool in a vector app. I have to do this a lot with graphics.. Gimp and Inkscape don't have a lot of ability when it comes to using multi colored graphics.

It appears you are rapidly becoming addicted  which makes me happy inside, knowing that another dye zombie (no relation) has been created with the help of the Disc Dyeing 102 vids.
I recommend a couple of things.
1: Find a way to post better, clearer pics for us that can't see them in person. That will make it easier to find points you can improve upon.
2: Keep dyeing, you'll just keep getting better and better.

i figured out a way to dye dx and r pro plastic it's messier than rit but so far i think it's a success . little fading laying in the sun like any dye but still stays pretty dark . here's the secret
Candle wax dye with a little alcohol and vinegar for good luck
it only takes about 10 drops so probably about 10/1 ratio .
it's an oil based dye so when it's time to peel the stencil after letting it sit for a few minutes or hours preferrably . takes a couple of wipes to get the excess off . plus it bled through the edge of the contact laminate a little vs. the rit. haven't checked the bleed factor with vinyl yet .
anyway try it out . good luck .

Cool! Any idea how well this dye holds/how quickly it fades? Can you find candle wax dye as readily as Rit, or is there some sort of specialty store that sells the stuff?

First ever dye job. Some issues with bleeding all over, most of it came when I was pulling out the disc the last time I dipped it a bit to far :( But overall I'm pretty happy with it being my first and all. I deffo learned alot about applying the contact paper properly. Such as use transfer tape if you cut off the disc >_<

Dartboard - Glo TL
Lion of Judah - Champion Firebird
Juan de Fuca, Cascadia Subduction Zone - Glo roadrunner
The dartboard was done using 3 stencils, yellow-red, green, then black
JdF Cascadia was from one stencil, peeling off successive portions of stencil
I brush on powdered rit dye, mixed with clear liquid soap and pure acetone, use clear vinyl paper bought from Ace Hardware.

What are people here using in lieu of the rit dye new formula no longer taking to a disc?
I had to go looking for information about this problem elsewhere and am surprised it isn't talked about more here as far as I can tell. So here is what I learned.
I went looking for either older boxes of powdered rit (supposedly if the serial #/date is earlier than 2011 it will work) or the liquid (non "ND") at Michaels but they had neither. I bought 1 box of the newer powdered Rit that they did have as well as another brand of fabric dye they had (can't remember the brand name) and tested them both on champion glow plastic - they both failed.
I had also read that apparently I could mix in ETOH with the newer Rit? but didn't want to go there if I could help it.
I had also heard about iDye poly dissolvable fabric dye so I went looking for that and found some at Columbia Art Supply on NE Burnside / 15th - they had a limited selection (it comes in many more colors, but fortunately had what I needed -black and red) for 3.59 each. I have since found 1 post earlier in this thread circa 2009 where someone indicated that this did not work for them. However iDye worked great for me (again it was champion glow and I think there is a difference between "iDye poly" and "iDye for natural fibers"). Also I did not try the separate packet of "color intensifier" that comes with each and which package says is for polyester. Maybe that would have produced an even brighter red but not what I was looking for.

You have to use the poly, but no need for the intensifier, it only leaves a weird, gummy residue. iDye definitely results in brighter colors, just be careful when you rinse the disc because if your water is too hot, it can make the dye run.
Lund
November 19th, 2012, 01:46 PM
Ask these dye nerds:
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25
Whoa, thanks MB. I guess I had been finding bits and pieces from the bible like tomes on that site via google, which is how I found out about the iDye poly alternative.
I just thought I would put out some of that info here since I was surprised that I was not seeing more talk on this forum from the local hardcores as to how they were dealing with their Rit withdrawal symptoms.
In summary:
-new powdered Rit = bad
-other brand at Michaels (Tulip?) = bad
-liquid Rit of the non ND variety supposedly works, not available at local Michaels
-iDye poly = great, available locally in Portland; optional color intensifier = not necessary, probably even bad. Thanks Kris.
One other lesson I learned that is old hat for most everyone here I bet: removed any vinyl residue in between application of color layers. Some of that gunk that I did not see kept the 2nd and 3rd colors from setting perfectly. Very minor problem in my case, but noticeable for sure.

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q535/ericlund/P1000502-1.jpg
You can see where some of the 2nd and 3rd colors did not take perfectly cause there was adhesive gunk left on disc that I didn't see as I peeled back layers. In hand it looks pretty sharp with good lines.

Wow. I hadn't heard about this company before today. From their website:
"Rip City Disc was created by disc golf enthusiasts just like you. We felt the disc golf scene was too plain and lacked inspiration."
I thought inspiration meant coming up with something new. Apparently it means stealing a catchphrase and graphics from a local basketball team. Who knew?
