I did my first 6 or so with a razor blade, but I wrapped the end I held in a paper towel.

I've done a lot of precision modeling (played Warhammer 40k) and I have to say the I have never handheld a blade and my models came out just fine. Using an X-acto type knife is (to me) just like using a pen or pencil, something a lot of us do daily and have been doing since we were very young. But, to each his own.

Man, there's been a bunch of nice dyes being posted, I feel like I'm slacking a bit. I've been preoccupied with motorcycle maintenance, perhaps a bike-themed dye is in order.

Trozzle, (!!!) you should give the pen xacto another shot. Give me 5 dyes of your time, force yourself to use it and cut out some sweet stuff. I bet you'll come around. Just make sure you pick up this shape:
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w314/cdhgufclk/ELITE%20EIGHT/XActo_No16_Bld_Resize.jpg

Actually, I'll ship you a couple to sweeten the deal...
What do you say?

Why do you like this shaped blade more than the regular triangle pointed one?

aaaand the blades could be accompanied by one of my few frisbees that don't have tattoos yet...

edit: The #11 blade, that long right triangle shape, tends to bend when I go around curves. The blade would try to go off in its own direction to compensate for the twisting which made for bent lines, and I like to get smooth, curvy cuts. The 16 holds its shape during the cut, so I can twist the pen and cut a smooth curve without any unnecessary angles in the middle.

That's one thing I tried to develop after seeing a plotter blade in action, the twisting of the pen in my fingers, similar to the cigarette rolling motion. A plotter blade pivots freely and smoothly while cutting, unlike a pen in hand. So, while cutting a curve, I try to mimic the plotter blade by twisting the pen as I drag it. Ideally the blade is always parallel to the cut. Even curves as small as 1/8" can be done without kinks if you spin the knife around fast enough.

Not with the 11 blades, though. They don't respect my authority and go off in their own directions so I said "good riddance."

The X-ACTO #16 Scoring Blade is a delicate cutting tool designed for scoring lightweight materials. The unique shape of the blade makes it easy to change directions and perform intricate, detail cuts without ripping or tearing the material. (http://www.xacto.com/Product/X216)

I have a question for you dye artists out there, or even you of those looking for dyes. How much would you charge someone for a dye like this? Or how much are you willing to pay for one? I suck at pricing, cause I normally do my work for free or super ass cheap. I want to start making money for my work, but have no idea what to charge. I understand if I have to buy the disc, then I am charging for that plus the dye work, but what is a fair price? If you dont feel ok answering here then PM me.

I know you got Chuck and many other sic artists up there in the seattle area, but I wouldnt mind taking over their dye biz up there if I can. much respect them of course, but if people up there see my work and want it, I am all for it. Much love to all of you Seatown artists, but if people want my work, you need to step it up. Im just saying this cause I want you guys to turn out some more sick work too. Its all love but lets step it up and make the NW the best dye work in the world. I know we can do it!!!!!

I would say that is a $30 to $40 disc (that's what I would bid if it were on ebay). Without a better pic however, it's hard to tell exactly how clean those lines actually are. What disc is it on? How long did it take to create the image?

Like whalekilla said, its a glow Stalker. The lines are super clean. zero bleeds or runs. How long did it take? I didnt time it, but it was alot of work. I dont really take time into consideration in my dyes though. Some of my dyes take much longer than others to get done, but the quality is what matters to me.

this sounds exactly like what the exacto 360 does. and the upside of it is that you dont have to spin anything in your fingers. it is just like drawing with a pen, the blade freely swivels in the blade holder and is super smooth.

at first i was a bit skeptical about the 360, but now that i have been using one for a while, i will never go back to a fixed blade. its like going from a ford to a ferarri and then going back to the ford again. thats not happpening.

I'm trying to get onto NWDGN more since everyone is just better around here, so nice dying everyone!

That ZombieAngel(?) dye is awesome. Not sure if you drew it yourself or what, but I'd say $20 plus disc price.

As far as blades go, I use my 360 swivel for anything that curves more than about 80 degrees. It does take a bit to get used to, but the cuts look great. I still use the regular xacto blades for most cuts, I feel I get a bit more dexterity from the fixed blade, especially for any long and straight cuts.

And heres my recent River.

I've noticed that when you dye over a hot stamp, the dye doesn't stick, but what about the Discraft stamps that are more like paint? Does anyone know what happens if you dye over it? The disc in question is dark pink Z with a blue stamp.

Not 100% done, but pretty close. The disc itself wasnt taking color like I wanted so had to improvise. Since it will be hanging in a smoke shop, I built a frame, made a light source to backlight it and added a "green" backdrop to make it look better.

Question? is it difficult to dye the under-side of a disc? like a bottom stamped roc?

Not at all. The process is the same. However, instead of floating the disc in dye you can just pour some onto the underside of the disc and let it sit. Pouring the dye out might cause some dribbles, so you may want to cover the entire disc.

802.01.C. Players may not make post-production modification of discs which alter their original flight characteristics. This rule does not forbid inevitable wear and tear from usage during play or the moderate sanding of discs to smooth molding imperfections or scrape marks.

Looks like smoothing imperfections on the disc is perfectly legal as long as you do not alter the flight characteristics of the disc.

Looks like smoothing imperfections on the disc is perfectly legal as long as you do not alter the flight characteristics of the disc.

This rule was implemented because a secondary market sprang up in the 90s where someone would 'tune' the new discs to a certain factor 1, 2, 3 etc. and then charge for that 'service'. So the rule was adopted to make 'tuned' or 'factored' disc were illegal during tourney play.

I am not a believer in cuts on discs make a disc a disc unplayable for PDGA use. I do cut some on the disc, especially on my multicolor dyes. My cuts are super shallow and dont alter a disc flights path in any ways.

Looks good!

Personally, I haven't tried using a lightbox or anything. I've devised another method for centering/aligning the pattern on the disc. I use an old laser pointer affixed to a wooden rig. Shine a laser dot down on the center of the pattern, then align the nub on the bottom of the disc to the dot... Although, I'm sure a light table would be helpful for re-masking.

yes deffinately use a light table for all my cutting and stuff. i cant remember how i lived without it!! it has made the whole design and cutting process sooooo much easier. i made my own light table using some plywood, 2x4's, cheap light fixture, extension cord, and white plexiglass. very cheap and works just as good as any light table that you would buy.

The Dye does not take very well... the acetone is fine for removing the stamp... btu it is hard to get the stamp out of the edges of the stamp. I did the Jager logo and it started out sweet... but over the last 18 months it is very faint on the front and has blead through to the back... but it does look sharp and clean on the back now... kind of like a back stamp. Anyways if you treat it like you would any other dx or soft pro disc it is fine.

Must be something in your settings there at flickr. It needs to say, "copy image location" when you right click it.

Nice stuff though. I know someone who would kill for the pacman (if he were a disc golfer).

Also does anyone have any solid info on how much weight a disc picks up because of the dye? The donkey kong one went through 11 dyes total, and was put on a 168 mako. I cant be sure but I think it weighs quite a bit more now.

Does anyone know if you can use dyed discs in a PDGA tournament. I dyed with RIT on low heat, so the disc is not warped and I never cut into the disc, so I haven't "modified" it too much have I? The donkey kong one might be extreme, but if a disc goes through one dye process is it still legal?

Wow Mayumoogy, those are some sweet dyes! I've recently wondered about the weight issue myself, only because I was recently asked... I've never taken measurements to determine whether dyeing a disc adds any noticeable weight. Anyone know?

Mayumoogy
March 29th, 2011, 10:53 PM
And if the weight did become an issue, I wonder if you could start with a really low weight disc and try to bring it in under the 175 g limit. I don't know why I am so worried, I probably wont be doing much throwing with the donkey kong one.

I've heard of TD's breaking out a scale for tournaments.

Until you attend one of those tournaments, I wouldn't worry one bit.

Its an interesting experiment though. Get a fine enough scale and find out how much weight a dye adds. Make sure to weigh it beforehand, because the factory weight markings can be off by a surprising amount.

General Scales
March 30th, 2011, 06:32 AM
Id use a current Ohaus. either triple beam or one of the newer digitals that weigh to the hundred and not the tenth. But what would I know about scales?

ChUcK
March 30th, 2011, 08:04 AM
The weight increase from the dye is negligible. I doubt you have a scale accurate enough to detect any mass increase.

I keep forgetting to sneak into the labs at UW in order to do a before/after weight measurement on the scales that read to .0001 grams. Gut feeling is that no difference would be found.

Water absorption is another deal entirely. Discs definitely absorb water, because over the years of forum browsing I have noticed a trend of pond discs cracking in half with their first tree hit, indicating water absorption that weakens the polymeric structure of the disc.

If anyone has a decent scale, do a quick test with an old junk disc. Get a before weight (take a few measurements and average them) then sharpie the hell out of the disc and see if you can detect any weight increase- wait until all the sharpie solvent has evaporated before weighing. Then take another junk disc and get before/after measurements from soaking in simmering water for a period of time. (The higher temp will make any water absorption happen faster than in cold water) This won't give you any real info on dyes, but it will tell you if weight increase is anything to worry about in a general sense.

edit: Love the Nintendo Power dyes. One small critique- be careful putting so much black background in there- in 6 months the discs with all the black will be pretty much all black with hints of Nintendo Awesomeness, due to dye spread.

I'd bet a few molecules of dye go a long way. Someone should do a before and after when wiping the factory stamp.

Is this "THE" ChUcK?! As in the one who put the Disc dyeing 101 video online? If so I owe it all to you my friend! I didnt have a clue about dyeing until I watched your video. Thanks for the info on the black, I kind of look forward to them messing up because then I will feel like throwing them:) I will just have to make sure to get some good pics before it messes up.

If this isnt ChUcK from the video then, thanks for the info about black anyway :D

Do you know of anyway to stop dye spread? probably not or you would of told me, also I have heard of cold dyeing is that a way to lower the amoount of dye bleed?

Yeah, Tim and I put that video together for this exact purpose- a beginner's primer for jump-starting others' dyeing careers. Glad to see it is working!

The only theory I can come up with to stop dye spreading is using a different dye that forms a chemical bond to the plastic instead of the Van der Waals static bonds that allow the dye to disperse. Nobody in the industry is talking, but they certainly haven't figured it out either, or else the factory fly-dyes wouldn't bleed either.

Unrealistically, I think stopping dye spread will require a more comprehensive denial of the laws of physics than even Xbox games are capable of, or someone working on a research grant that actually gives a flying F about frisbee dye.

My recommendation is to throw your dyes while they are crisp and pretty and worth showing off. You can hang 'em on the wall once they have bled enough into a design that only a mother could love.

Man did you go to disc dye college! All this talk of bonds and polymers has my head spinning :jumpspin:

I guess you are right about the dyes, it would be a shame not to throw something that I put so much time into. Sometime I feel bad for wallhanger discs because they never truly fulfill their purpose in life...which it to be thrown! Anyway enough of my touchy feely hippie talk, back to the dyes!

Found what I need at work to make a nice light table. It is a Little Tikes kids desk set that has an overhead light, and a bottom light for tracing things. Taking the 2 lights and making my own desk for it. Gonna be a great light table from some throw away stuff found at work :) A couple hundred dollar value for free. Already have the lumber at home.

So I took ChUcKs advice and threw my dyed discs, and I am glad I did. I aced hole 3 at Dexter Lake, with the Donkey Kong disc on my very first throw (aside from field throws). Looks like Makos will be a permanent addition to the bag!

So thank you once again ChUcK! I got a lot of compliments on the disc as well. Getting aces is the best advertising ever!

Ha ha, right on. It's a well-known fact that dyed discs are more likely to stick in the bucket than blanks.

I have one last piece of advice for you- make some popcorn and watch King of Kong (Fistful of Quarters) with your frisbee. It'll be a nice treat for you both.

I'm currently using Inkscape as well. As far as free software goes, it's probably the best option available. I've also heard that Open Office Draw can vectorize images. I'm in the process of downloading Open Office right now to try it out.

I think the general consensus is that DX plastic doesn't take dye very well no matter how warm/hot the dye solution is. Although, it didn't stop me from trying when I dyed Gizmo on a DX Rhyno.

Otherwise, nice dyes! I especially like the "so much win" one!

Rit has a few green colors, and you chose the wrong one. If you want a surefire green, go to a local yarn/fabric store and pick up a jar of Jacquard Emerald Green.

I think Rit's Kelly Green will work better, unless that's the one that comes out poopy.

Mikk, use a half-package of black Rit crystals to 2 quarts of water and you'll have better results. Get a cheap container to save the dye between runs.

DROCK, don't make your dye hotter. More than 120 F or so and you will introduce a whole new set of problems, and the dye uptake rate will be so fast that it will dye through the masking vinyl, which you most likely do not want. Avoid DX, it will just let you down.
