if wanna "wipe everything out of the disc" then just submerse your said disc in black dye for a day, and boom, looks like everything is "wiped out"
I gotta agree. I think this method is the only way to remove markings from a disc.

I have a brand new Z Reaper just waiting for a dye job. If anyone in the Seattle area is interested and could do it, I would love a logo like this one > http://www.metal-norge.com/images/0_logo_slayer.jpg
What color is the disc? You could mail it to me and I can do the dye for a minimal fee. Being we are in the same area the transit time should only be a day each way. Depending on the color of the disc the exact Slayer logo might not come out like that. If the disk is white then NP. Doing it in flat black is an option to.

I m wondering this, just out of curiosity. I am wondering based on posted dyes, who is your favorite dye artist on here? I know I do some pretty sick ass dyes, with multicolrs and some just black, but still are hard as hell to do. I know others like Gwillim do some bad ass dyes with very clean lines and are bad ass. I am just wondering who is your fave? I am not gonna hate if its not me. I know all of us disc artsist do some prety sick work, and I love all that they do too!!!!

I am of course my favorite Dye artist :) I o love Chuck and Gwillim's work for their sick ass clean lines. As an artist I do pretty much any dye artist who goes for it an does the best work they can. Lots of good artists aroundd the NW. The biggest thing I love about my work over others is that I try images that no others will try, and I honestly think I do some of the best multicolors around here. I love what all of you do though. Thanks

Of course, there's that thing about artists doing original work. Copying someone else's images onto a disc makes one a technician. There's no shame in that at all, just a different descriptor. I'm way good with, and a big fan of, great craftsmanship, and I've seen plenty of that here. I think that too should come highly praised and recompensed. But 'artistry' is a higher bar. I blow off my keyboard a lot around here, because that (wordsmithing) is my art. I don't want to copy anything that I don't put it in quotes.
None of you guys better stop what you're doing. I, and many others, take great pleasure in what you do. I will give you that there can be artistry in sampling, and some of that certainly happens here. But, I really like seeing the soul revealed in truly original works.

I know what you mean Bob. I dont consider myself an artist by coming up with my own work and putting it on a disc. I have done quiet a few original works, but most of my work has come from real artists that originally designed the image. I simply recreated it and out it on a piece of plastic. I kove what I do, and I do consider myself an artist for doing it. Dont worry Bob. Even though all of us may not create original artwork, I ont think any of us are gonna stop what we are doing because its not original

Like I tried to say, it's the words that I paint with. I want them to mean what they say (most of the time). And when it gets blurry, it might be the feelings I want to get across.
So, I'll give you this in a New York instant, there can be art in your adaptations. And really, I give almost a whole crap about copyrights. Artists should be free to do good art or bad art. There should be no penalties for trying.

Not the show biz part, anyway. That kind of judging thang is for dance contests and circus acts. It makes the games too much like the Country Music Awards and such. How about, who ever makes it down the hill fastest wins? Whoever jumps the farthest and lands on his/her feet? Or, put that rock in the circle at the other end of the ice, and/or, knock that other rock outathere. There are plenty of sports that could be called sports. We get a skating judges scandal ever few years. They should call those so-called games, "elections."

I'd like to see some sharpie art posted. Sharpie dyes can look way cooler than rit dyes when done by someone who can draw.
You're right though, it doesn't stay on as well as one would hope.
I think Bob is pretty much correct. For most of my dyes I feel like more of a translator than an artist. When I do design my own stuff, I guess it's called art, but nothing I've ever drawn hasn't been done by a million 3rd graders before...

Well I may take a pic and post just for the sake of the thread, me and my 3 year old enjoy doing art projects and disc so we may get back on the disc drawing soon, although my talent is not that great it sure is a good time catchin a cool buzz and then drawing on one.

I of course would love to hear people say they think my dyes are the best out there. I know they arent, but they are damn good. There are a lot of great disc artists out there and I love all of their work. I would not say that I am superior of any disc artist out there. I do take many chances that others wont, or havent yet. I do alot of discs that easily take 15-20 hr of work, not counting the soaking time, Thats drawing and cutting. I also do some sick ass multicolor dyes that no one else is doing. I would never say that I am the best out there, its not my style.

Tim should know better- when you dye over the hotstamp it just dyes around the hotstamp. There's no dye through, underneath, or on the backside. When the stamp wears off there will only be that portion of the C and the ends of the E that are still clear, undyed plastic, and the disc will be as anonymous as any other disc.
Well, maybe not so anonymous. If anyone ever asked what disc that is, all you'd have to say is "Take a wild F-ing guess." :biggrin2:

I say leave the gator as is. To go back and use another piece of vinyl for a circle would be a waste. I'm not trying to sound harsh, but you shoulda thought of that earlier during the design process.
Plus, another layer of vinyl will take some of the existing dye off the disc. Probably not an issue with something as dark and black as the mushroom cloud, but with other designs that can mess it up.
I say lesson learned, move on to your next challenge!
Edit: Hey TREX, is that gray or Dark Green?

thanks for the suggestion. If I decide to add the circle I'll vasoline most of the dye so the vinyl doesn't stick at all. Should work fine if I don't go near the seal. The circle was an afterthought once i started cutting. I could have stopped and bought something to do the circle with, but I was scared of leaving the vinyl on for a day or two then having residue where the dye needed to go when I cut it off. We'll see. I'll probably just leave it as is.

It is actualy green and brown with a slight mix. The picture isnt helping because of indoor lighting. The last one I did I took pic outside and you can see the diff colors. I also noticed the green came out slightly different on the glow plastic. It almost seems off green to me. My 1st time dyeing a glow.
Last one i did with outside pictures using same colors.

Yeah right so anyways, back on topic...
I haven't dyed much in quite some time, so here's a blast from the past to lead the conversation away from this madness. This is Dwight from Sin City, during the part where he's jumping out of the window and the tramp waitress is screaming that Jack is a cop, but Dwight doesn't hear and continues his pursuit.

I did this one at the biodiesel factory during some down time. I had a sponge brush and painted the two background colors with rit + acetone, blat blat blat. This was before I ever heard of transfer tape, so the cut vinyl was peeled from the backing and placed on the disc with no support. This led to crap like the big gap between the leaves, and other problems in other dyes. I can't remember how I ever heard of the transfer tape, but it changed everything.

Never tried frisket paper. Contact paper isn't that tacky so I usually try and hit it with a space heater then press down a lot for a good fit. Its about 6 bucks after tax at target and walmart. It's hit and miss though with performance. It really just doesn't do to well with the edges of the disc and on Discraft discs where the stamp left and inprint in the disc. As long as the disc is perfectly smooth and you are not taking your design all the way to the edge its ok, but only ok.

I read over a tutorial on a members website and it mentioned things like vinyl and transfer paper etc. I get that what I've been doing is fail, I was sort of just trying something which is more or less working. I want to learn though. I'm just not totally sure what I need to be buying and where I can buy it in my city. I personally order my vinyl from signwarehouse.com. good prices and cheap and fast shipping. I normally get it within 3 days. I used to and its still p;ossible to get good sign vinyl from a local sign shop. Just ask for their remnants. Oracal 651 series is the best vinyl I have used so far. get the white stuff. Transfer tape is good too, but to eliminate that cost, I just use blue masking tape. it basically does the same thing.
As far as cutting on your disc. Some people may tell you that it makes the disc a violation of pdga rules and makes the disc unusable in pdga play. That is B.S. The rule says something along the lines of purposely altering a disc to affect the flight makes it not usable. That part is true. But, if you make small minor cuts to do a dye that doesnt fall into that category.
All of my black only dyes are done cut free, but with the multicolor dyes are do, there are cuts done on the disc, but it doesnt affect the disc, and you can barely see them anyways.

i started out using contact paper and cutting on the disc. it works, just not easiest and best way to do it. but it is a good way to start dyeing and see what its all about.
i buy my vinyl on ebay now. its cheap, i have used the special oracle stuff that is talked about and i have used the cheapo stuff as well. in my opinion it doesnt really make that much of a difference on the quality of the vinyl you use. just get a light color like white so you can see your design through it when held up to the light.
transfer tape/ blue tape, ive never used transfer tape because i never troubled myself to go find any. i have only used blue tape, and i sometimes wish that it wasnt so sticky.
have fun dying and i look forward to seeing some of you stuff posted here.

Chad, I cut my vinyl squares to 9.5" by 9.5" and it's just barely enough. If you can find a 12" roll or even 10" you'd be ok.
When you first start out with a masking tape, go ahead and cover the entire disc's worth of vinyl, but soon you'll be crafty enough to only cover the cut areas of the design when transferring the vinyl to the disc. Therefore, when looking for transfer tape, you only need a 3" roll instead of a huge one. This will allow for custom masking sizes in the future, and make for much less waste.
Like Trozzle!!! and Tyvek said, though, get white or light colored. I got navy blue vinyl once and it is almost impossible to see through.

heres a down and dirty fromula you take the cost of Supplies (ink, vinal, disc, ect) plus the amount of Time it took you to make (including art work) times dye diffuiculty factor(X) (this is based on ho many dye colors there are in the disc). The forumlia looks like S+T*X=$. Therefore, if the supplies cost you $20 and it took you 8 hours to make said disc with 5 colors we are looking at 20+(8*5)= $60 if anyone finds a flaw in my forumila ihave ah a few :chug:

As far as cost of the dyes you do it all depends on the original cost of the disc and supplies, and then a reasonable charge for doing it. Putting a price tag on a disc to try and compensate your time just wont work. If your want to charge for time and artistic value then maybe do your work on something other than a disc, that way the whole issue of it being for disc golf is out of the equation.
I have done more then a few dyes that were meant to be thrown that have gone straight onto the wall instead by the people who bought them. I have a scale that I use now to set the price of the dyes that I do ahead of time.

That's a tough question to answer. It's a guessing game each time, because the concentration of the dye in the pan is always changing as water evaporates off or is added. When I do 10+ shades of the same color each layer is usually in for 30 seconds. If you want 2 shades, like black/grey, then just check your grey shade every 30 seconds or so, but it always takes less time than you think.
Here's a fun one I did the other day:

I had a problem today while dyeing a star plastic shark. The disc actually peeled. What I mean is when I was taking off the 1st pieces of my vinyl to start the dye, what I thought was left over adhesive that was coming up was actually the skin of the disc. I have done a lot of dyes to date and have never seen this before. The 1st color was black for the shark logo. the 2nd was red for the swirl in the back round. All the peeling occurred in or around the center of the disc. Anyone ever have this happen?
I am not happy about this at all. I was given a custom picture to dye which took me a long time to do and now the disc does this and I feel crappy. He waited so long and I have to give him back this, this, I dunno what the heck it is peeling looking disc thing ={

hey TREX,
yeah i have had a few discs do this on me. i had the worst problems with this from the Discraft Flex plastic and one ESP plastic, and on a couple star plastic discs but it was only just a little on the star plastic discs. and they all were sort of around the center of the disc.
i dont know why it happens but it deffinately does suck when it happens. i havent tried dyeing any ESP or Flex plastic since then. i mostly just tell people that the champion and Z plastics are the best for dyeing.

Lol, it'll happen with Gold Line plastic from Lat and Star from Innova as well. Seen it happen, never happened to me but it's happened to some of my friends on some very complicated dyes.
I think the reason that the Z/Opto/Champion plastics dye so much better is it isn't really a multi-blend plastic. They tend to be more uniform in the actually granules they use to manufacture the disc. And since ESP/Star/Gold Line is a blend of the Z/Champion/Opto plastic with another varying plastic added into the mix to get the grip, the mixes are less uniform.
Variances in plastic molding are great. Or horrible depending on how the variance effects you and whatever you happen to be doing.
Oh yeah, last thing, I've never heard of anyone trying to do the FLX plastic with dyes. I'd figure that it'd be somewhat like trying to dye R-Pro or Soft X discs. Just seems that they'd bleed and not allow clean dye lines.

very interesting. i had not thought about that aspect of it, but it does make some sense. but i am not very educated on the science behind all the different plastics and blends of plastic for discs.
as far as dyeing Flex plastic goes, it dyes just fine with no bleeding or anything. the only problem i had was with the thin layer of plastic peeling up. i was also thinking it might have something to do with the heat of the dye while the disc is sitting in the bath.

I think my DX roc did just fine against the meteors. I'm pretty sure it was the handful of 15-10 foot missed putts that was the difference in the match. Remember what I was putting with? I'd figure that it'd be somewhat like trying to dye R-Pro or Soft X discs. Just seems that they'd bleed and not allow clean dye lines.
I had the top layer peel away in spots when trying to dye a red R-Pro Aviar. Never made it into the dye, just rubbing the stamp off with lacquer thinner started the peeling process. I'm sure pulling off the vinyl would have taken care of the rest of the top layer had I tried it.
Have successfully dyed a yellow R-Pro Dart with no issues, however.
Lines start looking fuzzy more quickly on R-Pro compared to Star/Champ but were sharp to start. I'm not a big fan of dyeing anything more detailed on Star plastic for this reason.

I haven't inked one in a while, but here's a few I've done...
I don't use Rit, however. I use an industrial-grade ink that's solvent resistant and a special tape that's a fluoroelastomer film with slicone adhesive. That's what gets the razor-sharp lines.
The Imperial Insignia (Star Destroyer, of course) was a royal bee-ya-ti-cha, only to have it stolen at Highbridge.
In fact, the only disc I still have out of all the ones pictured is the Rebel Warbird (it's on a Crush. I know I know, it should be on a Force, but I already had the Crush and it was crispy white. Now it's all beat up and I don't even throw it anymore because it's too flippy)

So I wonder if you guys could share some of the tools needed to start dyeing. I am only looking at doing black dyes.
hey no problem, it doesnt take that much at all to get started. you need black RIT dye( this can be picked up at most stores, but craft or fabric stores always have this in stock and in a lot of colors). also you will need some sign grade vinyl or contact paper to make your stencil. a exacto knife and a old pot so that you can heat they dye up in. and of course alot of patience and a steady hand while cutting your stencil!
that list is for the dip dye method which is the most comonly used method, you can paint the dye on your discs which eliminates the need to heat the dye up, but this can be more time consuming. with painting the dye on you would still need the material for the stencil if you want sharp clean lines, and you would need rubbing alchohol and a little bit of acetone and of course a paint brush.
hope this helps.

So I wonder if you guys could share some of the tools needed to start dyeing. I am only looking at doing black dyes.
Here's a link for the ink pens I've used (it's the 'degreaser-resistant ink' pens)
http://www.mcmaster.com/#marking-pens/=839i1n
I've tried all the colors on all types of disc plastic and, hands down, black performs the best on the most types of plastic--leaving a matte finish on plastics like DX, Pro-D, S, Power, etc. while leaving a glossy finish on plasics like Champ, CE, Gummi, EvolutionHPP, Supreme and the best results being on Star and Goldline.
And here's the tape (the 'heat-resistant kapton tape w/silicone adhesive)
http://www.mcmaster.com/#masking-tape/=839plf
Burnish your edges and you will get razor sharp results. the tape is slightly stretchy so it will conform to the curved surface of the disc without wrinkling. Plus, the adhesive is very forgiving if you don't press hard on it and can be re-positioned many times until you are satisfied with your lines, then can be pressed into place. Even if you want to go with the hot Rit bath, you will find no better tape to mask off with.
Good luck and have fun!
