Gwillim, Very nice work on that disc! it reminds me of one of the logos for the skateboarding company powell perelta from the 80's. keep up the great work.

Here are two ROC's I just got done for my new best friend ERP. The first one came out great and I am very glad as it is an ace disc of yours and I couldnt sleep at night if I ruined an ace disc! The second one with the smaller version of the company logo you requested came out well except I used a smaller pice of vinyl and then masked the edges... it never happened before but it bled down the seems of the masked edges... It kind looks cool, but sorry. Also I was able to get rid of most of the ball point pen X-OUT so it wasnt a complete failure. Hope you enjoy Erik

Ironically, I love old vinyl!
Generally heavy grain, loose grooved, and played loud, but I can't wait to get my hands back on these!
Thanks again - the square line looks intentional...
I'm racking up a birdie on every third throw with that phoenix sidewinder - seems to fly as long, but more predictably than the R-Pro boss that it replaced which is unprecedented for a star disc...at least when I'm throwing it.
Playing tomorrow if you or anyone else is interested - course TBD...

Patience was the biggest factor in this dye. It took me about 45 minutes just to transfer the vinyl on to the disc after the 4 hours of cutting in three different sittings over two weeks. Hell, burnishing the vinyl took about 30 minutes by itself!!!!
If I can get to TTs tomorrow I'll have it with me (trying to sell it). It looks significantly better in person than in the fotos!

Hello All.
I was directed here by a friend who thought I would enjoy talking to others about dying discs., I am very impressed with all the dye's here. I have been dying discs for several months now but I do not cut anything by hand. I purchased a plotter just for doing dyes and club stickers. I sold my 1st dye last Saturday so now I am really hooked on dying =].
Here are most of the dyes I have done. http://s260.photobucket.com/albums/ii4/rexter1971/Dyes/ Unfortunately do not have a pic of the dye I just sold. I took it out to show it off and someone wanted to buy it right there and then. I am gonna go see the guy today to get a picture of it.

I go to one of two places... google image search; type in anything that comes into your mind, your favorite beer or sports team, or just typ in bad ass, trust me it will fill up a couple of days.
2nd I go to deviantart.com and search the 40,000 stencils they have in there. this will also take a couple of days.
I save a copy of every image that I like enough to take a second look at in a file for future dyes, and when I am not sure what to do, I look through my file for inspiration. Good luck, those were some pretty good cut jobs, love the BOSS

I want to put down dyes that other people would want to buy. I am still doing stuff for free for some of my friends but I am buying discs now just to dye and sell.
I like your 2nd look file Idea. I need to divide images up so it makes it easier to decide when I am ready to dye.
Thx

Nice is an understatement hehe. I use the heck out of it. I got it to do dye's and now I am also doing graphics for cars. I did our club logo and made some golf baskets for car windows. The fact that I can see a graphic I like, and then do it makes me feel like I have unlimited possibilities. I bought mine used from a friend.

A quick estimation counts 592 sides of squares. These sides have 1184 lines to cut. Beyond that, just how these master dyers work out the multiple colors, I don't know. It looks like a good winter project to me.

There may be only 94 squares, but technically you have to cut out 188 squares, as there is an inner square in each that must be cut. Plus, to make it look good you'd have to use a ruler for each cut. That just sounds like a huge hassle to me.

I fell into the same trap and purchased some I-dye colors that would look sweet, but none of it works, even though it sells its self identically with RIT. The only other dye that works well is some quick drying stuff that is sold for fishing lures. Point is stay away from any thing other than RIT! I fell into the same trap and purchased some I-dye colors that would look sweet, but none of it works, even though it sells its self identically with RIT. The only other dye that works well is some quick drying stuff that is sold for fishing lures. Point is stay away from any thing other than RIT! IF you cant find the color you want try mixing colors to your liking.
Thx for the info. I haven't been doing this long and I have a lot to learn still. The brand of dye was Dylon. Some amazing colors, to bad it doesn't work:mad:

Anyone have luck with laying down a dye on KC plastic?

I've heard many people say that Innova Pro plastic doesn't dye well, but I have not found this to be the case. I have several dyes on pro plastic; some that I've done and a couple that others have done. Both color and black only. Like all dyes, the lines will blur a little bit over time. This might be slightly more pronounced in pro plastic, but if it is it's not by much.
I have never tried the ashes/dye thing, but here are my thoughts/suspicions. I don't know how well the ash will disolve in the water/dye mixture, but my suspicion is that it won't at all, leaving kind of a sludge at the bottom of the pan. I think very little, if any, of the ash would actually make it onto the disc. But I'm just (educated) guessing here. :chinscratch:

regular pro plastic takes dye really good, unfortunately the dye fades out faster than star or champion plastic. KC plastic will take dye, but not really well. for instance, you might be using a royal blue, and have the disc come out a baby blue. if you had enough hours you might be able to get a nice color, but it would take a looooonggg time.
as far as using somebodys ashes. aside from it being just slightly weird, i dont think any of the actual ash would end up in or on the disc, but it would serve its purpose psychologicaly for the person wanting it just knowing that you put ashes in with the dye. they dont have to know that there isnt any ashes in the dye on the disc.

Yeah. I figured that much about the ashes. I did have some weird leaf residue that made it into a dye once. It actually made the dye look almost tie-dyed. I always found that the lines on Pro plastic were not very tight and it also faded very quick.
Thanks...Gabe

I just now read through the discussion about the rollergirl disc, and I have to agree with Tyvek. It wasn't too complicated, unless you count the extra time I spent ensuring every line was clean and smooth. If there's anyone in the DG world that deserves a perfectly clean dye, it's Zippy for sure!
I haven't been doing many requests lately. I finally learned that I'll never make any kind of business with disc dyes, so I only dye for fun now. It's funny- dyeing discs is so much better when you don't acquiesce to every dye demand that comes your way. Nothing is more empowering than telling someone thanks, but I don't feel like dyeing Tony Danza's face on your champ Loss. I mean Boss. Dyeing discs is becoming a fun hobby again!

i really like your designs, but if you plan on selling your discs or doing them for others please stop using sharpies to enhance your dye. the sharpie will fade away while the dye stays so people will end up having to do some sharpie maintenence to the discs.

Probably it's emulsions and surfactants screwing with you.
ChUcK
September 24th, 2009, 12:05 PM
Yeah, who knows what chemicals are in the soap that kill the adhesiveness of the vinyl. I think the fact that on a molecular level the soap and vinyl are much more alike than the water and vinyl leads to problems as well.
Surely, soap is a way better method of removing adhesive than just water.

Troy, I do see the illusion, nice work. I think in restrospect, it works best if the light squares are actually lighter than the background, which would be even tougher (but not impossible?) to dye. Great work, and nice patience!

I tried to make the dark squares as dark as possible and the lighter squares pretty light. I think it turned out pretty good, and yeah it was a hell of a lot of work cutting out each square. I have a potential buyer for it already, but may sell it to you if still interested. I was throwing it out at Hagg last weekend, and for a star Wraith, it went really straight, I may have to keep it.

Pretty cool. That Zone looks like a modernist interpretation of a nautilus. I think I'll call it the Mollusk from now on...seems fitting.
Interesting how the dye worked out on the goldline plastic, where in some parts they dye is actually darker in some areas than others where there was more exposure. Gives it a cool marbled effect.

If the halo was able to be dipped, it would have looked so cool. I didn't want a fuschia driver, though, so I had to scrounge the only blur rit in the house, which was leftover laundry soap from our Oregon trip.

Yes, I realized after looking back at it, that it's not just the contrast between the squares. It's that one set of squares is LIGHTER than the background, and that the other set is DARKER than the background.
If you started with a white disc, the first dip (black) would be the just the dark squares, the 2nd dip would be the mid-dark (grey) background (almost the entire disc would be dyed at this step) then finally the light squares (or they could maybe be left white).
I HAVE NEVER DYED A DISC, so if I have this wrong, sorry.
The illusion does work, and I am eager to see it in person. If you have a buyer, good on you, sell away!

Originally, I would have dyed the image just like Trozzle!!! did, but now that you figured out more specifics on the illusion, that is exactly the procedure to follow. Maybe you should get some vinyl and pick up a new, fun hobby?

I would also have done it the way Troy did; I also would not have realized the significance of the background shading until afterward either. Plus, isn't it even MORE work the way I described? Maybe it's the same # of cuts, but it sure is a tricky peeling job at step 2, I would think...
I am fascinated by the whole process, and AMAZED by some of the work I see up here. My Dad is a graphic artist, signmaker, calligrapher, etc., and always tried to get me to follow in his footsteps. In fact, he used many of the skills discussed here: vinyl, X-Acto knives, stencils, pounce bags & wheels, squeegees, and so forth. I am also intrigued by computers, plotters, etc. I had a neighbor who was a more modern graphic artist; everything he did came straight out of his computer! But I lack creativity and the perseverance to follow through on long complex projects (wow I think I just figured out what's wrong with my golf game!). I get frustrated when I lack the dexterity, creativity, or patience to follow through on challenges that don't just come easily. That's why I often reach out for assistance (or pay for it) with projects I feel are beyond my capability. That's what makes us non-artists appreciate art even more!
I appreciate the encouragement, I think one thing that holds me back is hearing about and seeing photos of the permanent damage you can wreak on your house by dying discs. Maybe once I get plumbing installed in my basement, that mini-kitchen and bathroom, then I will give it a try downstairs....

I have a practice basket in my yard and last summer I left a Champ Boss upside down in the basket and the sprinkler filled it with water leading me to accidentally discover a good method of removing sharpie marks from ANY type plastic golf disc. The weather has to be hot and sunny. Put your disc outside in a sunny spot upside down with some water in it. Then just leave it outside until the water evaporates. The sharpie marks will have faded. Add more water and wait for evaporation again. Repeat until sharpie marks are gone.
The longest it took me was a month. Some discs only took a few days. It always worked. This method doesn't work if it is not hot (80 plus degrees?) and sunny.

I've traded a lot of plastic in the past on Discaroo (http://www.discaroo.com) and have tried a lot of different chemicals and methods suggested by others around the web but found nothing that did much more than fade the ink on Star, Champ, Elite Z, ESP, etc.
The best results was with a PVC pipe cleaner but even it didn't fade it much more than 50% and smeared the ink a bit in the process.
I've given up and just mark out the old ink in fear of taking it too far and ending up with damaged discs.

Well, I just pulled out all the long lost DX and similar quality discs in the Club Mud lost and found today. I did my best to remove the names and write, "Club Mud," to replenish the depleted loaner box. All the above mentioned discs had been in the L&F for years and had been called on where possible. I used acetone and it worked on most of then.
I'd like to do the same with the more expensive plastics, but they don't seem to stay in the box as long as the cheap ones.

Are you using multiple pieces of vinyl for this multi-color dye?
The most I've done was three colors using two pieces of vinyl.
Lining up the second piece of vinyl was super frustrating.
