OK, I got it to work. The dye itself doesnt look like much, but it was a pain in the ass. It is on a nearly perfectly clear Crystal Buzzz. The thing that made it so difficult was that the bee logo was a raised imprint on the bottom side of the disc. I just added the coloring. with the raised edges I was very worried about bleeding. This disc was so damn beautiful when I got it and didnt want to ruin such a beauty of a disc. Looks like I didnt I will get it back to you as soon as I can J Man!!!

Thats sweet, plus +1 for creativity.

Thanks!!! It wasnt really being creative. It was more of following the raised areas that were already there and making sure not to have bleeding. A pretty simple dye, but definitely a pain in the ass!!!

Curious to those who Dye. I'm looking at investing in a vinyl cutter for dying discs. Any thoughts?? I'm looking at some on Ebay right now. I have tons of photoshop and Illustrator background for images. I will probaly use the cutter to make stickers and wall art too so I'm thinking 24" cutter. Thoughts???????Thanks for the help.

I would recommend not getting the cheapest one you can possibly find. I have one sitting on my floor right now that doesn't seem to work anymore...and when it did, it was not the simplest thing to use--extremely sparse instructions written in Engrish.
Incidentally, if you're interested, I could probably hook you up with a cheap deal on a previously working, slightly dusty plotter!

For those interested I have been looking at these ones on Ebay that are 24" and supplied by US Cutter.

I'm a big fan of the X-acto 360 combo'ed up with a human hand.
Otherwise...
Check with Nate of discgolforegon.com if you must have a plotter, he uses one.

Here is the finished product. I messed up pretty badly in the planning stage and got a lot of bleeding. This is one my sloppiest dye jobs in the past six months and I’m not very happy with it. I was able to salvage it enough that is looks nice from a couple feet away, but up close it’s pretty poor work.

Alright here is another of mine. i did this for a friend and he was having a very hard debate with himself as to throw it or hang it on the wall.
it is a crystal buzzz.
http://i580.photobucket.com/albums/ss248/Mr_tyvek/randompictures044.jpg
so i had a question for people that have been dyeinig for while. i didnt do any dyeing over the winter time and my my dye just sat in its jug on the back porch. i got it all mixed up again and went to dye a disc. after two sittings in the black dye of at least 1/2 hour each the black on the disc was only very dark purple when held up to a light. so i went and bought a couple more packets of dye and put them in and got them mixed up.
but on the next disc i did, it was the same deal. the dye just doesnt want to stay mixed up like it used to last summer and even with two fresh packets of dye in it is still isnt as potent as it used to be. i dont have a lot of liquid, less than a quart of liquid and the equvilent of 2 bottles of liquid dye and 2 packets of powder dye in it(which almost seems like overykill)
anybody have any tips or solutions on why my dye isnt as potent as it was and how i can get it better again without just starting a whole new batch of dye?
thanks.

Put it in a big pot and heat it up to just about boiling. Stir it up a little. The heat mixed with the new dye should revive the whole thing again.

i did exactly what you described before my second disc yesterday, but it didnt fix the problem. any other thoughts. there is a possibility that the whole solution froze at some point in the winter. has anybody had any experience with freezing their dye and then trying to dye with it after it has thawed out again. i am thinking that maybe if it froze that it change the molecules somehow. im no physicist though.
thanks!

Some recent dyes, all very sloppy for some reason.
Blinky, Version 2, on a Star Destroyer
http://www.gilbuddy.com/photo/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_0091_2.jpg
Groovy, Version 1, on a Glow Champion Firebird
http://www.gilbuddy.com/photo/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_0092_2.jpg
The orange and yellow background actually looked more brownish for some reason in person, so I decided to "fix it." As usual, that was a bad idea:
http://www.gilbuddy.com/photo/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_0094_2.jpg
Changing the orange to red introduced a lot of bleeding.
Stupendous Man! on a Glow Champion Teebird
My homage to the best cartoon ever.
http://www.gilbuddy.com/photo/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_0096_2.jpg
Even with all the "uglies" and sloppiness, they actually look quite good in person. Either that or I just have extremely low standards. :whistler:

I had the idea to do this dye for over a year, but I was going to change it to "One disc to rule them all, one disc..." etc in the tengwar script, but I never could figure out the translation of "disc" into black speech. After a full year, I figured I might as well give up and just dye it with the original text.

Have two new dyes to show. The first I just got done with the other day. If you've seen the show, you should immediately recognize The Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch. Predictably enough, it is on a 167g Champ Monarch.
http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp127/hymesz/DSCF0272.jpg
And this one was a dual color dye of black and blue on a 172g Champ Eagle. However, the disc got left on the blue dye for a little too long, and the only way you can see the two colors is when the light shines through it. So, I set it over my light box to take the photo of the intended image.

He created Smurfette to try to lure in Smurfs to one of his traps. If you'll notice, she is the only Smurf without a tail.

JK Pro takes a dye really well; the second picture here (http://www.nwdiscgolfnews.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2465#post2465) is a dye I did on a JK Pro Valkyrie. Haven't tried the KC.
Dye simply will NOT take to R-Pro. I used the same method of dip dye I always have before (where the dye is usually set in after around 15 minutes), but even after three hours dipped, my R-Pro Dart looked nearly new (it looked like a whiteboard that had been erased). I was a little upset at the fact, since I am taking a real liking to that disc and had a nice design in mind for it.

I'm glad Orion posted this...I wanted to show it off but knew my crappy cell phone camera wouldn't do it justice. After finishing a round that I felt was disappointingly bad at BSF (only to learn that I had yet to see what bad really was), Orion was there with this in hand. I'd asked him to do a dye for me a while back, and finally decided on a PTM dye. I sent him a couple of pictures for ideas to work from...I had big hopes for how it would turn out, but when he showed this too me, it exceeded my hopes by far and took a lot of the sting out of having to add my scorecard.
Awesome work, Orion. I took it out for its test drive today, it definitely has a little less glide than a standard Wiz, but I just need to get used to it, because I don't want to ever take this out of my bag!

Tim it was my pleasure dyeing that disc for you.
for dying that disc for tim, he gave me a totally clear Crystal Z avenger ss disc. i have very high hopes for this disc!!!! right now i have a esp avenger ss that is my primary roller disc and i want to replace it with this crystal one. so i am looking for some ideas to put on the disc. i have a couple of my own, but was wondering if somebody else has some really cool idea for a design that would go on a roller disc. the design should have at least 4 colors to it and flow nicely.
I dont dye discs for people to put on there wall. if they put them on their wall thats there choice, but my intentions are for the discs that i dye to be used. it is a big bummer though when i hear that a disc that i dyed has been lost, that sounds alittle weird but i have an attachment to each disc that i dye. so when somebody loses one of my dyes, i am always looking for it.
i just had an idea! when i was talking to gwillim on saturday, we were talking about how the northwest has some of the best disc dyers out there.(which is true i think) sooooooo.... what would you guys think about doing some dye swapping? like i have a disc or two that needs dying, and i could send a disc to one person and they send my one of theres and we dye the discs for each other and send them back? it would be really cool to share artwork with each other that way. people know me around olympia as a disc dyer, but it would be cool to show them some work that somebody else did for me as well.
the first time i heard of gwillim, was when Eric Lund showed me a couple discs that was dyed for him by gwillim, it would be cool to spread the word about the different disc dyers of the northwest. let me know what you think.

nice dyes. i can only tell which one the beast is! that one is easy. i know that the red one is a starwars symbol, but dont know what it stands for. if you put a small black line outlining the red symbol it will make it more contrasty and it will "pop" more. just a though. do you have anymore discs that you have dyed that you can post?

Chuck and I did a couple videos a while back on the basics of dyeing. This is the first one (you should be able to see all the other parts in the "related videos" on the right hand side): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USYRUBkdxn0
Also, Gwillim wrote up a nice little piece on his blog: http://blog.ryangwillim.com/?p=309
The methods are largely the same, with a little bit of variance here and there, but they'll get you on the right track.

Ok I am still searching for effective ways to thicken my dye. This is a plea to ALL disc dyers out there!!! what ways have people found to thicken there dye and/or make it set in faster??? i have tried laundry detergent-it makes the dye thicker, but the dye doesnt set in the plastic very well. i left some on a disc for 2 hours and only had a very faint coloring after i washed it off.
somebody told me to try dish detergent, but i havent came across any clear detergent yet. i was reading on the internet about thickening acid dyes with Guar gum, but i dont know where to get it at.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW FOR SURE WHAT SORT OF DYE THE FLY DYERS USE FOR THERE DISCS???!!! it seems like the dye on the fly dye discs doesnt fade like regular dye does over time and the colors that they have are so vibrant.
a couple people have told me that it is just RIT dye. if it is RIT, is there some sort of additive to make the dye set in faster or make it more colorfast over time?
I really want to get away from the dye bath method of dyeing without having to wait forever for the dye to set in at room temprature.
any sort of advice would be great! has anybody ever messed around with Vinyl Dye ?? it seems as though that would work, but i cant find any around here. i have went to a couple of auto parts stores and they try to sell me vinyl paint telling me that it is vinyl dye.
thanks.

And I was thinking, maybe during the tournament in May, 2010 at Camp Taloali, could set a time in the evening in the kitchen for a tutorial? Would the Dyers be interested in that?

orion, you don't need clear dish detergent. Any amount of RIT you put in the detergent will overpower any tint you find in the soap. If you still have qualms, get a yellow/amber detergent for as little color mixing as possible.

Very nice, good work as always, Ryan. Maybe you need to make a few crappy dyes at some point so it'll make your normal ones look that much better. :wink2:

Where can I pick up one of those rotating cutters? And the vinyl? I apologize if this has been queried somewhere earlier in this thread...
The vinyl should be purchased at Pacific Coast Sign Supply. Ask for Oracal 651 15". It's 1.80/yard if I remember correctly.
As for the Swivel Knife, they are sold at Columbia Art & Drafting Supply.

Honestly I dont get it either. I know the "short bus" thing was the way the retarded or handicapped kids got to school, and its kind of a way to poke fun at them. I just added the "short bus disc golf" thing so I could add some element of disc golf into it. Its just an idea that came into my head, so I had to go for it.

Gwillim and Trozzle those are cool dyes. i dont think that there is anything offensive about your short bus disc. if you would have had bloody body parts hanging from the basket and the bus parked on top of a bunch of dead animals, then it might be it little offensive to some people.

This is with the lightbox, I love it, I don't think I'll be doing dyes without it anymore, takes less time and I can be way more precise.
Yeah, the fading sucks, but this is a custom order, so I'm not worried about it. The guy lives on the east coast or something, so after tomorrow, I'll never see the disc again.

Yes, however the acetone will also smear your dye if it isnt 100% completly dry and cured. So be patient & careful!

So I traded my new best friend for this Roc this afternoon, which I absolutly am falling in love with, and as all dyers know when you fall in love with a new disc you must dye it to complete that connection and further enforce your love for this disc. Anyways, I had envisioned it a little differently, but I left the stamp on with the hopes that one day the stamp will rub off and it will leave the stamp as a negative, kind of a new idea for me anyways, hope you enjoy, what a beautiful ROC! Really crappy foto, I'll take a better one tomorrow. This disc will be for sale, but I haven't decided on a price yet. This is one of the most detailed pieces I've done, took me forever.
